Absolutely no fish and all batter. I grew up with Cap'n Yobys and it was where we always looked forward to going for delicious food. It is absolutely horrible now and outrageously expensive. This place isn't the best and some of the workers really look at you as a nuisance, but I stop by every now and again because it's been around my whole life and I get a craving for that batter they use. It is a little expensive but for me, a two piece hits the spot. I will say, although a certain counter person is a little gruff, everyone I've seen seems to be busy working, so that's good. I do feel like I'd stop by more often if the service was a little more friendly though. read more

Wow! This place is great. Had their world famous halibut fish n chips and they were amazing! The breading was simple so you got to enjoy the halibut itself. Served with fries tartar and ketchup. I have been eating Captn Yoby's fish and chips for over 65 years and really enjoy the fish. you could even eat the left overs cold out of the fridge. I travel 80 miles yesterday to get my fish fix. What a disappointmen! The batter was very greasy and kind of dougly. And it had a bit of OLD oil taste. I guess it is time to find a new halibut fish and chips place. read more

Not a great first impression. Guy working in there seemed irritated. I was too scared to ask him for vinegar. I thought it was very expensive for what it was . Try it for yourself but ask for ketchup as you get your tray or you will stand in line 10 min to get some. That poor guy is making shakes taking orders and everything else. read more

I have tried their Fish & Chips twice and it is mixed for me due to the batter they use for their fish & chips. I'm not saying it's bad, just different. It reminds me of a batter you would find at a county fair it's like a corn dog batter I think. It coats thin on the fish when fried so it's smooth like. If you like a sweeter type batter I would say give them a try you may like it and may even be a raving fan for their fish & chips. read more

I had Cap'n Yoby's Moby sandwich. I ordered it in the drive through, and I highly recommend you DO NOT do that. I was offered no sauces for the fries, and the fish itself was very small, with way too much batter to make up for it. The batter was no fully cooked through either. Maybe if I dined in, they wouldn't have rushed the food as much and it would've cooked all the way, and maybe I would've been offered sauce for the fries. read more

My halibut was a tiny sliver in a huge piece of batter. Not even sure how they can get that much batter on that tiny of a piece of fish. Not even sure how they can cut the fish that small. I mean, it was literally just flake splinters in there. More like a fritter, batter with specks of fish. Okay, I hate writing negative reviews. But this establishment has really gone downhill...and I'm honestly surprised they're still open. Or still have the same people running the place. It's not BAD service. Food is made fast and fresh still. So I generally can't complain. But I can't remember the last time an employee seemed happy to be working there. Which is a problem in my book. Almost all of their food I don't like anymore. They have two types of fish, only one is good. I used to advocate specifically for their fries and shake...they don't have shakes anymore. WHAT?! Their fries aren't as good as they used to be, and may even be different if they were willing to part with their shakes. Their burgers aren't good. But here's the one pro: their food is still fresh. It's a personal taste problem as to why I don't like it. Ambiance has gone downhill. Whenever I've been inside or through the drive-thru years ago, it felt like a fish restaurant. Now? I just feel like they're staying open because of some threat against them. It's harder to put up with their inconvenient location now. It used to be like "the food's too good to care" but now it's frustrating that they're on the corner of essentially a one-way street. There are two directions you can access it from, but it's just weirdly positioned. Also I'll briefly mention the rising prices. That's not their fault, but it doesn't help their cause. Overall guys, I hate to say it...I'll never return unless someone I'm with is DYING to go! They have a good fish option, and that's it. Everything else has gone downhill food-wise and atmosphere-wise. Workers seem to hate their time spent at the shop. I can't remember the last time I saw them busy, but I also don't really look that often. Even ordering for take-out over the phone isn't great. I don't know what is up with these reviews complaining about their fish and chips......I grew up on the Pacific coast and am very picky when it comes to fish and chips. These guys know how to cook fish and chips! Period! One significant sign of good fish and chips is when the restaurant offers malt vinegar....I won't even try F&C at any restaurant that doesn't offer malt vinegar. I am obsessed with the halibut at Cap'n Yoby's. I really dislike cod, so I rarely order fish-n-chips, as cod is usually what's used. When I discovered Cap'n Yoby's Halibut-n-Chips, I was over the moon! I know that some people think it's too expensive, but let's be real.... halibut is an expensive fish! (Yesterday, I bought some halibut at the grocery store, and it was $29.99/pound.) It's not cheap, but it is worth every cent, in my opinion. I also like their batter, which I prefer over breading. But the batter isn't too thick or thin (it's just right). And there's no weird, "off" flavors from the frying oil, so they much change it often. Their tartar sauce is terrific, too. We don't live in town, but we visited there recently, so I had Cap'n Yoby's for dinner the first night, and again for lunch the next day! I really enjoyed my stop here. The fish was delicious and although deep fried was flaky and not greasy - a hard thing to find with an order of fish and chips. The fries were good and plentiful. YUMMY tartar sauce. Clam chowder was a little thin for my taste but the flavor was very good. Prices are on the high side but the food seemed to be of a decent quality. Yoby's spoiled me for Halibut 50 years ago. I've tried it many times at other places many times and my family can attest that I ALWAYS say, "NOT AS GOOD AS CAPN YOBYS." Burgers are good as well but I stick to the halibut fish and an extra TUB of tartar sauce. I ordered the 3pc fish & chips and a strawberry milkshake. Maybe I was just really hungry but everything was 10/10. Crispy crinkle fries. Crunchy flavorful breaded thick cut halibut.
