I am a very experienced musician - I have taken hundreds of music lessons from dozens of teachers,…read moreon a variety of instruments, and even have a performance degree from an elite music school. And I can say that Carol is one of the best, most dedicated and insightful teachers that I have ever encountered. I had a lot of damage from music school - i.e. "drummers can't sing", "you are tone deaf", etc. and Carol helped me move far past that into a place where I can sing comfortably, confidently, and most important of all, have fun doing it! Carol won't try to fit you into some style of music that you don't enjoy - a lot of teachers think that the only "real" singing is classical, jazz, etc. Carol is more of the Bruce Lee philosophy - she doesn't aim to fit you into a certain "style", she is there to help you produce the best sound that your body can make. We all sound different because we have different physical characteristics and backgrounds, and Carol helps you to understand the fundamentals so that you can fully express yourself without strain or injury. She is comfortable with students of all ranges - some of her students were very experienced musicians like me, and others were total beginners. But we all felt that she had helped us progress in a very big way. One of the biggest surprises of my time with Carol is how much healthier I became. As a child I had asthma, but now I think it may have been just bad breathing technique - no one ever taught me how to breathe! Carol showed me how to breathe in a more relaxed and full-body way, which means that I can run faster and longer, and lift more weight at the gym. That was a surprise! I have also noticed that my speaking voice is better - it is easier for me to talk to groups of people with or without a microphone. Now I can speak more clearly, with less strain and without blowing my voice out. My time with Carol was a very deep learning experience, but also a lot of fun; we miss her here in Chicago. Thanks Carol - you changed my life!

As a bonus, I also got an opportunity to perform in one of the recitals hosted by Kirsten and it was a great experience. It was a wonderful experience having Kristen as a vocal coach. The bottom line is that I improved…read morein my singing, my confidence increased significantly, and Kristen was a really multifaceted person with a lot of flexibility to meet my goals. I enjoyed my meetings with her. She always so the positives and the possibilities, even when it came to my own songs. She was extremely supportive of working on my original music and helped me feel confident with the few songs I wrote that were pretty high on my range. She's also a very real person, so we could focus but we could also laugh or acknowledge if we were struggling a bit that day. She offers all of her students, piano and singing, to participate in a recital that is hosted by an elderly care facility for which she volunteers her time, I believe to do singing or choir. I suggest for any potential student to take that opportunity in that low stress environment with Kristen's support and other supportive students to practice being in front of people. Also, the residents really appreciated it. While meeting in person would have been nice and probably has some advantages, working remotely was really convenient and still quite effective. I highly recommend Seattle City Music with Kristen for your vocal or piano lessons!
