If you want some special-occasion food, this is a great option. Picked up some bacon and some sausage for a Christmas family meal. Italian-style sausages seem to be the specialty here, so I stuck with that. The Chevalatta, a spiral of sausage on two skewers, has pork, provolone, and parsley. We cooked it outside on the charcoal grill and it was great. I don't usually shop at meat markets, so I don't know if the prices are particularly high. For the last few weeks I've been coming here. My boyfriend only eats beef bacon, he can easily eat a pound every 2 days. I've actually been looking for a place nearby the sells beef bacon for the longest and lo and behold they have it here. I decided last week to get a few things, they also have turkey wings which have been hard for me to find here also. In NY I could get it out of a regular grocery store. The service is good, just get there before 5 because they clean the machines and if you need slicing you won't be abled to get it after they've been cleaned. read more

Old world butcher shop right in the middle of the Italian Market in Philly. We waited in the longest line just to get inside d/t pandemic capacity restrictions and boy was it worth it! Picked up spinach and provolone sausages, sliced braciola, and hot lamb sausages to take home to Lancaster and had the chance to ogle at everything else in their meat cases. This has to be the coolest old fashioned butcher still in the city of Philadelphia. A place were you not only can order a whole animal but, get special orders for a great price! I ordered a whole pig from here. I asked for a pig around 20 to 25lbs. Dominic got me the perfect sized fresh pig of 24lbs and even cut the back feet off for me. I was able to fit it into my smoker and create a perfect smoked pig for Memorial Day! Not only can you get special orders, their sausage is to die for. A little pricy but, after you have some of their Italian sausage you can never go back to grocery store junk. Also don't let the old look fool you. I have been shown around the whole store and it's clean. Just keep it mind a lot of the store is original and over that time items have been worn out and no matter how much they are cleaned they will never truly look clean again. It's fine I would not go here if I did not trust were my food came from. We are just too used to our local grocery store and it's packaged meat with fake food coloring. This is one of the most basic shops you could imagine, YET, it is the only place in the city I get my sausage from (I have literally brought it to bring to gatherings out of state). A HUGE variety of options, not just sausage, but even some more exotic options of meat (check out their site). We have tried most of their sausage options - all hand made, no preservatives like what's in frozen/supermarket stuff, and it is SO GOOD! I would not even think of making sausage, peppers and onions with any other product. The people there are so knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and it's just a very personal shopping experience. They will tell you how to cook their meat for your best dining experience. I was told about this place by a neighbor when I first moved back to Philly, and they said exactly what I just wrote. It might be slightly pricier than the crap you get in the supermarket, but that stuff just does not compare to what Cappuccio's offers. Looking for something new and different? I placed an order through Mercato for 1.5 lbs of top sirloin steaks and asked for three steaks. I expected them to be pretty evenly cut into 1/2 pound each and didn't think I needed to tell them that Instead, I got one acceptable steak. Another was probably 4 oz and the third was huge, but soooo thin, that I probably should have made a steak sandwich with it, except, it was mostly fat and grizzle. Every sausage is unique, each pound of fresh ground chuck makes the best burger ever, and every 2-inch bone-in pork chop gets me credit be being a good chef. A lot of the meat is from Amish folks in Lancaster so it's locally farmed and organic. You can get whole pigs, lambs, or any cut you want. They have delicious beef, pork, veal and lamb and probably even goat, though i never asked. Their prices are also great, you get top quality meats at very reasonable cost. i've gotten it all from Capuccio's. Sausage, pork chops, steaks, veal chops, lamb ribs and leg of lamb. All matter of meats, homemade sausage and a wonderfully helpful staff is the name of the game at this Italian Market gem. This is not the place for vegans, vegetarians or those who prefer their meat to come in small, neatly wrapped packages. This place is about as real as you can get. The tools of the trade hang from the walls and ceiling proudly. There are hooks, large knives and cutting boards that have seen their fair share of use and a simple display counter showing you the cuts available. The staff is perfectly happy to answer questions, dispel what I like to call "butcher lore" and get you exactly what you want. They even will sell you bones for your dog to munch on. Pig ears? Sure they have those too. I'm happy a place likes this exists. It gives me hope that we all won't be swallowed up by mega marts with rows of pre-packaged pink slime injected garbage. Whenever I visit the Italian Market, I find myself wondering which of the places are authentic old-world places vs. which are Disney-esque caricatures. One thing is for sure, this place is for real. From the older mother who owns the place yelling at her middle-aged sons who work there, through their knowing everyone who comes through the door, Cappuccio's is the real deal. But you don't just come here for the charm--you come here for the meat. And it's some of the best product I've seen around. They have an array of housemade sausages for sale--in fact they were making the next batch while we were there. My wife got the signature spinach-provolone sausage, and I, on the advice of a Yelp review, asked for the hottest sausage they have. The best, though, was getting a dry-aged prime rib cut. I asked about it, they brought over a rib roast, and I decided I had to have a piece of it. So I asked for a 1" thick steak. They brought it over to a bandsaw, and scored the meat to show me what it would look like. After I agreed, they cut it and lovingly trimmed it so that it was ready to cook. The steak was 1lb and came in at about $22, which is a great price for dry-aged beef. If you have never had dry-aged beef, I unconditionally recommend it. I'm generally not one to use pretentious food language, a drawling--"it has a subtle nuttiness and earthiness, evocative of the earth from which the animal came." I had a steak identical to this at Barclay once, and it set me back $60 with no sides. Cappuccio's is by far one of the most amazing butcher shops in the city. On my first visit, I was unsure of what to get. I popped in shortly before the place was going to close for the day, but that didn't matter - the employees were beyond friendly and helpful. After some discussion, I decided to go with some pork chops, which had to be cut. No problem, the staff was willing to cut the chops to the thickness of my liking. And man, were they some of the best pork chops we've ever had. I had such a great experience that I went back 2 days later, this time with my husband, a lover of all things meaty. We were again greeted and helped by the exceptional staff. The experience you will have at Cappuccio's is worth the trip alone, but their meats are also exceptional. I stumbled on this place one day when I was visiting my in-laws from San Francisco. Ordered two Pterodactyl (honestly that is how you spell it), sized 25 plus dry aged Prime Rib Eye's. They were exceptional. And about the same price as regular prime rib eye's at Whole Foods in San Fran. They had a unique gamey flavor which is what you expect from dry aged, but very seldom get. As in never from Whole Food's meats. I have since moved to PHL, and shop here for special occasions. Would shop more but the drive from the 'burb's is a pain. I have never tried the sausage, but the Pork Butts for soups, etc. are terrific as well. All that is a 5 star, but then if the Mom is in the House, you get an extra show as she is awesome and right out of central casting!! Totally keeps those boys in line. We really wanted to love this place. We were visiting Philly's Italian Market area and came across this butcher. We were so excited they had blood sausage and purchased 8 links. We talked at length about our families and how my husband's mother was a butcher, as well, and joked how true butchers would never eat "old dried-out" meat. Beyond the old world charm, this is just another meat market I think. I bought veal there recently and made a blanquette out of it that tasted really, really good but since this was the first time I'd eaten veal since I was 12 or something I have nothing to compare this product to. I was substantially less impressed with the Italian sausage I got there. Naturally Fiorella's was closed (are they ever open?) and Esposito's had run out of hot sausage. So after buying hot sausage with fennel here I unwrapped it to cook it and it had an odd, fishy smell. Most of the meat didn't taste that way after being cooked but a few pieces did and it was fairly offputting. I also get the feeling that standards of cleanliness aren't their forte. I squeamed a little as I watched the guy cut my meat without using gloves, then use his meaty, unwashed hands to wrap it up, put it in the bag (you have to touch the bag of course), take my credit card, the whole nine yards. I swear I'm not a hypochondriac or germophobe but isn't wearing plastic gloves a very basic thing when you're working in a butcher shop? read more

I was very disappointed in this place. From the moment I walked in the smell made me want to leave but I already paid for the Groupon so I decided to put on a brave face. I will say that the staff was great! Very friendly. But the meats all looked old and dried out. The best selections were in the window to pull you in. The sausages looked good. The dry Aged meats looked fine. But inside the store it was dirty and smelly. I'm a bit apprehensive on actually eating what I did buy. I chose Dry aged Rib Eye and 2lbs. of Sicilian Wine Sausage. Yesterday I planned on making sausage with my sauce. I went to get the sausage and it was closed. (I am a slacker.) The store employee was just locking up and he saw me. He let me in. I was able to get some good sausage (the broccoli rabe and another yummy one). I also got a pack of burgers. The sausage was yummy and my homemade sauce was not. I can't wait to try the burgers. I'm from Miami and I visit family in Philly often. I never miss a chance to go to the Italian market and on those visits I almost always stop here. I love this guy. He exemplifies everything I love about Philly. He's very friendly, but not overly so or in a fake way. He's real. He's knowledgeable. He's a hard worker. His meat is quality, fresh, and well taken care of. Though wanting to buy more usually the only thing I usually get is a dry aged ribeye. On my most recent visit I snagged a near 40 ounce dry aged bone in ribeye. That is not a typo, 40 OUNCES! Over two pounds! He trimmed the steak and packaged it nicely. We were advised on how to transport it back to miami(we vacuumed sealed it and froze it then stuck it between our thickest jackets)and days later I was putting it in my sous vide at 125 and then finishing the Goliath in my cast iron skillet with butter. It was phenomenal. It had a deep rich flavor and an aroma that only dry aged beef has. I'm glad I got to eat it in the privacy of my own home because I would savor long, deep, penetrating breaths before ever bite. And if you think that last comment sounds sexual, your right because it was as orgasmic as food gets. read more

We thought we would splurge on a dry-aged prime strip - we have had those in steakhouses around the country and loved them. Not Carpuccio's though - what a disappointment!
