I feel every time I've walked by here, it's been closed. Today was Vetri day after going to Fiorella, so why not go to another Vertri (minority owned) venue? No disrespect at all to Heather Thomason, because this really is her brain child. I've loved following her for a few years now and was happy her kickstarter was backed. I really wanted to contribute and fought for it a bit, but it was backed before I made up my mind. I did wrestle with it for a bit, about what package I would get, but I knew it would be logistically hard to support. We walked in and saw a lot of interesting items. Duck Eggs really caught our eye, but we didn't want to carry them around with us. Decided to leave the store, go to ITV for a drink, and come back before they closed at 6:00 PM. Ordered a nice cut of flank steak and the duck eggs. Maybe for a Kangaroo burger later this week? I just love the idea here, where Primal wants to be more interconnected with farms. I'm really into better quality eggs now, for when we make pasta or things like that. Knowing what the animal ate, really helps make a better product when egg is the star. read more

I loved the stories and reputation that Heather Thomason set during her time at Kensington Quarters. And although I still haven't gotten around to trying it during that time, I was looking forward to her and Cecille May's commitment to make sustainable, pasture-raised meat more readily available to Philadelphia when they branched out on their own for Primal Supply Meats (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2016/05/31/kensington-quarters-butcher-heads-out-on-her-own/). And when I sampled their offerings at spots like Stargazy, Garage, and Tired Hands Fermenteria it added up to some of the best meat dishes I've had. While they did an amicable job of providing their meats to restaurants and farmers markets, Primal Supply really needed a butcher shop of their own to better prepare Philly for the carnivore cravings that their meats illicit. And when I heard that they were set to open a few blocks away from me in the spot that used to house the old East Passyunk hardware store (https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2017/12/15/primal-supply-butcher-shop-east-passyunk/), it lead to some of the best sausages that I've had (and I say this as a Cappuccio's die hard! - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cappuccios-meats-philadelphia). the bacon & thyme pork sausage was sweet yet smoky and savory at the same time. And the pork Vindaloo yielded an ample amount of Indian spices and heat. Add in the ability to get beef, pork, chicken, liver, lamb, goat stew, and even pet food, and you'll find a huge variety of options. They also carry local cheeses from the likes of Birch Run Farms, pasta from Severino, and the oppotunity to join their pay as you go Butcher's Club meat program, making it another solid addition to East Passyunk! read more

I'm really glad to see a worth while business in that fantastic location. The store is impeccably clean and well staffed which are both common butcher shop problems. There's a wide selection of meat, and I've been told there's much more than what's in the display case. They also carry some other items like dried pastas and such. You can't do your grocery shopping here, but you can definitely do a one stop shop for a single meal here. The strip steak I got was definitely something to write home about. The cuts are priced at a premium, but I think most people would be able to tell the difference between this and a grocery store cut in a blind taste test There's a lot of space in the shop. Like almost too much. It's like the floor plan is set up for more traffic or longer lines. I'd really rather see some more diversity in product. Maybe some more seasonal vegetables? I like how ippolito's fish market carries some frozen goods and fresh local vegetables they would normally accompany their fish. I think PS would really benefit from that type of merchandising, as would it's clientele. We just hate having to go to four god damn stores for one meal! Welcome to the neighborhood. This review is long overdue. It is very rare that I can comfortably ask my butcher questions about my needs, sound ignorant but still be treated with respect. I am proud of my cooking but this doesn't mean I have to know every single part of anatomy of the animal. Unfortunately the term 'seasoned butcher' in Philly Italian market means that you will be treated like trash or scoffed if i) you don't have a PhD in butchery, ii) are not Italian or iii) are not a lifetime customer. That is not the case here. The staff always professionally makes sure to accommodate your needs. The prices are seemingly high. You need to realize what you are buying. An animal product's label goes beyond the animal-cut pair. It pertains to the methods of growing, feeding, living and killing and also the the sustainability of the farmer. Local farming is naturally more expensive but gracefully more sustainable. I got my delicious lamb loin for my lamb Wellington at $30 per lb. I am aware of the high cost and it is a natural byproduct of my decision to reduce unsustainable meat consumption. Every cut I've had from here has been delicious, not necessarily in comparison with other places. Bit still, I've had my best dinner parties with meat from primal supplies. It seems that they are also closely tied together with the dining industry community with pop up events with some of the cities best chefs. Not that this has affected me anyhow so far and not sure what to think of this but it feels reassuring to know that the restaurants I trust in town trust this place as well. read more

When I needed some custom-sliced beef, I thought of them immediately: a woman-owned, nose-to-tail butcher selling locally-sourced, pasture-raised meat, poultry, and fish (well, the fish isn't pasture-raised...). The Brewerytown store happens to be a block from my son's house, so I knew where to find them. :-) I had several very rapid email exchanges about my needs with a very knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous guy who checked with the butchers (who are on-site: you can see them through the glass wall at the back of the showroom), who recommended top round. They froze it and held it for 2 weeks; I just picked it up, and it's GORGEOUS. While I was there, I looked around and picked up a few others of the fascinating, wide variety of locally-sourced product: some grass-fed beef, duck eggs, a frozen duck, BBQ sauce, smoked cheddar. The ONLY negative is that the prices are high. but not out of line with other venues that sell locally-sourced foods. It's not someplace I can afford to shop regularly, but for special meals it'll be my go-to for meats. And locally-sourced treats. BTW, in response to Jerry T., who complained that the steak he bought here was inferior to the other two he'd bought at a conventional butcher, he may not be familiar with the differences between grain-fed and grass-fed beef. Grass-fed beef tends to be leaner, and has a different (healthier) fat profile, so someone used to typical fatty beef might consider it inferior; it's _different_ yes, but as you probably know, USDA grading (https://www.usda.gov/media/blog/2013/01/28/whats-your-beef-prime-choice-or-select?page=1) is based on fat content, with prime being the fattiest ... and worst for you, and for the environment, not to mention the cattle themselves. _Better_ is a matter of opinion, and I prefer grass-fed beef on all counts. read more

There is something special about supporting a local business, who supports local farmers during a pandemic. The eggs are amazing, the quality overall has been great. Yes, it is more $ than the average thing you find at your local supermarket but I appreciate Primal Supply and how they have fed me quality during these times. Fantastic local butcher shop. Meats are locally sourced and freshly cut. Staff is helpful and their small selection of other grocery items is well curated and high quality. If you're looking for bargains, go to the Giant or Stop-n-shop. Great new shop- super clean and bright. I bought 5 NY strip steak- very fresh, trim and delicious. You'll pay a premium for sure but I didn't regret it... Unfortunately I've experienced 2 instances of no glove use...literally grabbed my ground beef with bare hands, bagged and rang me up with no paper, gloves etc. glad they are comfortable with raw meat but they need to realize what can spread and should use gloves, wash hands before bagging product etc. read more

I was hoping to find a great neighborhood butcher, and I ended up finding that and much more. I am very much a believer in supporting local farmers and making sure my meat lived a happy life. Walking into Primal Supply was a dream. Not only did they have fresh, high-quality cuts of meat, but they serve fresh farmers market ingredients as well. Perfect for a home cook. I have additionally placed three special orders by phone and they had them for me perfectly, each time within 24 hours. The thing that stands out the most, however, is the community building around the city. They do pop up events, dinners with chefs from the city, and even pair with local businesses to distribute their butcher club boxes - another program everyone should join in place of buying meat at a grocery store. A fantastic addition to East Passyunk! This is a great place for excellent, quality cuts of beef, chops and poultry. They have a good selection of meats and farm fresh fruits & vegetables. They also have unique small batch condiments, beverages and other grocery items. The staff is really friendly and helpful and the shop is spotless! Ever since they opened, I try to make a weekly trip. They're that good! Forget the Acme, Whole Foods or Giant! We tried Primal Supply for the first time yesterday evening. We picked up 2 New York Strip Steaks, and 2 Pork Chops. The strip steaks were eaten last night, and had some of the most flavor in a steak we've ever cooked at home & were incredibly tender. Will absolutely be returning for more! read more

I have gone here a couple times and enjoyed myself until today. I requested ground chicken on 2/24 the man behind the counter gave me an attitude. He told me if I wanted my chicken ground that he was going to charge an additional $4 per pound. The last time I checked a butcher's sole job was to process meat. When you're paying $12 a pound for chicken the least you can do is grind it up. read more

On occasion they have goat, rabbit, duck, veal and house-made guanciale. I came in last week very curious about the shop, but with zero idea of what I was going to make for dinner, and left with a full meal for me and my partner. We decided on duck breast, which I'd never cooked before, but one of the butchers knew just what to do and she talked us through it. We did just what she said, and they were perfect!
