Even though I've been in Philly for 3 years, it was only recently I started going to Espositos. A friend of ours, Steve, recommended it and after one visit it all came back to ny why going to your local butcher is much better than a chain grocery store. After 2 or 3 visits, they basically know me. 2 hot sausage rounds, 2lbs of bacon and 4 marinated chicken thighs. For Thanksgiving we decided to do short ribs. The cut was perfect. Esposito's is awesome!!! I'm just letting you know right now that this place is packed, but just stay in line behind the counter you wish to be helped and you will be in and out in no time. I expected this place to be super expensive. I went before Thanksgiving and wanted to get lamb chops for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised that chops were less than $6.00 a pound! THAT'S RIGHT. What whole foods charges you at $8-9/pound, Esposito's is almost $3 less. Fast service. They have so many different varieties of meats you really can't go wrong. They take credit cards as well. After buying about 7 pounds (lol) of lamb chops i cooked them simply with olive oil, salt, peper and dried rosemary. 3 minutes per side on medium-high heat and then I let them rest for 10 minutes. LET ME TELL YOU. They were the night's biggest hit. When you buy lamb chops you run the risk of the fat taking over the whole chop and then after you cook the chop you are left with barely any meat, but not with the ones i bought from Esposito's! Honestly if you have the time go during the week, because on Saturday's it'll be a mad house as anyone knows in the Italian Market area. read more

Shoppers beware we have been shopping on 9th at for years and over the last several have watched stores decline and then either close or decrease their quality. Esposito meats is the reason for this warning. My wife shopped there yesterday prior to this review and purchased chicken leg quarters. After freezing them. She took them out today to thaw l. When they thawed out and she went to.clean them she said they had. A smell of rotten eggs. She called back to the store to tell them about this and they asked her on the phone if she had left them out as if she isn't smart enough to know that chicken spoils. She said to them I guess that's what you did and lowered your price making me think I was getting a good price. Don't shop where you aren't appreciated or treated fairly the stire hasn't been the same since the older guy passed away to a degree anyway years ago. But we will just sacrifice convenience and go to Reading terminal from now on...we normally do but a quick fix away from rush hour traffic got us there instead. So happy I live in this neck of the woods now so I can frequent here weekly for some fresh meat. First off, I love that it's wide-open, clean, well-organized with everything labelled clearly, and has an accessible entrance. Staff here is what keeps me coming back. I'm admittedly intimidated in places like butcher shops and delis, but everyone here is super friendly and helpful and they have enough people working that you never really have a wait. I've gotten fresh ground beef, chicken, cheese, frozen sandwich steak meat, and short ribs here, and everything was fresh and delicious. I came here Friday after work. It was really clean inside and didn't have that meat market smell. They had a big selection of meats. It was my first time buying from here so I only purchased a few things. I bought lamb chops, chicken wings and a pound of steak. I cooked Some of the lamb chops Friday evening. feeling foolish not contacting Espositos before. Top shelf, delivery with instruction on how to carve, perfectly succulent pork. Chefs knife wouldn't cut the skin !! Had to crack it off to reveal succulently tender perfectly seasoned pork. PERFECTLY COOKED!! The au jus, oh my! Whole house had a hint of heaven in the air. That was money! Flavor/tenderness knocks your socks off We all (37 of us) were vying for a position to get some crackling. I'm sure if it had bones , we would have eaten them too. Esposito has a huge variety of meats at very good prices (esp compared to Reading Terminal). opted out of the lamb chops b/c they were so fatty. was hoping the hot italian sausages would be awesome, but they fell way short of di bruno bros'. it was at least 60% fat, unfortunately, and my bf and i are not huge on fatty meats like pork belly (unless it's in korean food). otherwise, it's decently flavorful but you can definitely tell that the quality of the meat just isn't good. we also bought a whole chicken for a roast and it's less than $3 a pound so I can see why people keep coming back here for how cheap it is. But you're paying for lower quality. read more

Both meats were tender, yummy and consumed in record time : ) They also sell cheese and I got some very good parmesan reggiano and asiago that's 1/3 of the price that I would normally pay in San Francisco. Butchers used to intimidate me, but after coming here I've realized it's no big deal. The staff is non-pretentious and they have a great selection of meats for cheap. I was making a fancy bolognese sauce and needed ground skirt steak and ground pork, both of which I could not find at Acme or South Street Market. I got 1.5 lbs of each as well as 8oz of pancetta, all for only 22 bucks! This place also has great thick cut slabs of bacon which are great when I'm hosting a brunch, a wonderful prime rib roast if I'm having a fancy dinner, and smoked turkey legs when making collard greens. The best time to come is later in the afternoon at around 2. If you go too early in the day it's a bit crazy and hard to get a butcher's attention (especially if you're short). read more

Why in the world haven't I shopped here before? After reading several reviews and walking by this place for a few years, I decided to give it a shot. The selection, prices and staff are pretty great here and I'll be returning weekly. If you grew up with a butcher like I did, then it's nice to see that they do still exist and take pride in their work. On my last stop in I needed several different cuts for our weekly meals. I was able to get all of them at around half the price of what I was paying at another establishment. If the price wasn't enough to make me return, the guy who helped me was very personable and gave me exactly what I asked for without any hassle. That always works well for me. Why don't I come here more often? Wheelchair and mobility scooter accessible. Love the butchers for their humor and speed. A little confusing the first time you go, but just watch people, you get the hang fast. What I like is the variety. They have fun plays on traditional beef or pork dishes, but with Turkey. The ground beef is fresh, smells fresh and is super versatile. They have a good variety of cheese now too. I walked out with enough meat for over two weeks and only paid around forty bucks, that may seem like a lot but that covers lunch and dinner with a lot of variety. read more

This is one of the best places to grab meat in the Italian Market, and the problem is, everyone knows it. On the weekend, there is always a HUGE line inside, but if you're aggressively patient (find one line, stay in it, and don't let anyone in front of you!), you'll get to the front soon enough. The one thing I always get here versus anywhere else in the market is whole packer brisket. They have them usually for $4-4.50/lb, which is cheaper than anywhere else I've been in the market. They are solid pieces of meat. From time to time, they will also have chicken thighs for $0.59/lb!!! I always hope they have this, but never comes around when I really want it. The service is good as long as you can deal with the lines and the South Phillyness to the place. It's a great place to shop and I always like the products the sell me. read more

This is one of the best places in the Italian Market to purchase meat from. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Even if you have no idea what you want for dinner that night, and are the most indecisive person ever, they are always willing to help you out and make suggestions. We brought students in here when going on an Italian Market tour a few years back, and they were BEYOND good to them - since that day - they are my go to spot! One of the main reasons to love this place is their sausage - specifically their broccoli rabe and provolone sausage. I buy it a lot (probably too much). They also have great prices on cheeses and other meats. Be aware of their hours though, I often forget the day of the week, walk over and am disappointed to realize that they are already closed for the day! read more

Pray tell, how is it possible I'm the FIRST to review this location? Esposito's is located in the heart of the Italian Market. It's a fairly large store, compared to other shops in the area, with cases and cases of every possible variety of meat, including some organic. I have purchased from them in the past and have always been pleased with the quality as well as the friendly service. However, this review is to send kudos to Esposito's for hosting Chef Lenny's 2nd (or 3rd?) Annual Meatball Competition. They shut down their business to host the event which raised money for a variety of charities, featured a taste competition between 21 contenders from S. Jersey and S. Philly, and closed with a meatball eating competition between fire and police. You've gotta love a local business that supports their community. read more

A real deal butcher which is oh so rare. They have every cut of meat imaginable and if they don't have it they will cut it for you. While I hear some of the criticism of the staff in terms of their customer service skills, this is a volume business and not your corner butcher shop. Know what you want when you enter or ask. These guys are busy and a little rough around the edges. My suggestion for the faint at heart, don't show up on a weekend. Hit it when they are less busy and chat one of the butchers up. If you make a connection, these guys will become your best friend! They have grass fed beef with and without marbling. You want a lean steak, they have it. You want one with a ton of marbling, they have that too. These guys totally know their meat and their product is well worth the trip to the Italian Market! read more

A really wonderful butcher in the Italian Market, I've tried a bunch of different butchers in Philly and Esposito's is without a doubt my favorite. Clean, friendly, great selection and most importantly the products are a cut above. I love the broccoli rabe Italian sausage, the steaks are great and am a big fan of the less traditional butcher shop items. I usually get shrimp and chicken here as well and they are both primo. The chicken particularly always comes out tasting so much better than a grocery store. They also generally have great specials- Labor Day weekend you could get racks of ribs for a buck! read more

On top of that, they offer some of the best prices, have a great selection of all different cuts of chicken, pork, beef + other random items like lobster tails, cheeses, some sausages.
