Even so, my session with Koren Reyes was meaningful, and I was made to feel that I might even deserve the treat that this experience proved to be. This is how it all came about. A friend spotted a Groupon for a boudoir photo shoot, and lassoed me into the deal. Being uncultured, I had no idea what a boudoir photo was, and had to learn that it comes from the French word for bedroom, and is a collection of seductive and classy (as opposed to smutty and raunchy, in case there was any confusion) photos that women traditionally present as romantic mementos to their lovers. I agreed to give it a whirl, then forgot about it until the week before, when Koren herself started sending thoughtful reminders and illuminating contract information. The night before, I wigged out a bit, wondering what the HELL I was going to do to force myself to look good since I still had a patchwork of tan lines on my skin and a winter hibernation gut. Oh, and I didn't really have lingerie sets as far as garters and all that was concerned... The next morning, I showed up at Koren's house a bit before ten. There was a professional studio setup right in her high rise Midtown West apartment. "You look very West Coast," she said in her down to Earth manner, eyeing my duffel bag full of piecemeal negligee and my Marmot rain jacket. "Are you from Seattle?" I liked her already. We chatted a bit about what I wanted. I was a bit wired from a rough evening of partying the sleepless night that followed, but she put me at ease and managed to get the essentials out of me. I was welcome to her pine candle scented bathroom to change into my things, and we got to work right away. She was a meticulous master of poses; telling me exactly how to create curves I definitely don't have, and reminding me to stick my chin out so my jowls don't show. If I shyly mumbled about something I wanted to try, she picked up on it and made me work. I had walked in thinking that my face was my only asset if anything, but was shocked that I ended up choosing prints that were more abstract and dependent on the structure of the pose and the lighting. Koren was patient and enthusiastic as I finally chose my two 5x7 prints, and even added an extra one because I just couldn't let it go. She took my credit card info, printed me a receipt, and handed me a picture CD of all the thumbnails (only lightly watermarked). I had some time left over before my friend arrived, so she let me sit around, play with her adorable dog, and just ask her questions aplenty about the gigantic prints and framed photos all around the studio. One thing that caught me off guard was her maternity photography. I swore to her that her photos were one of the first things that made me see the beauty of pregnancy. I have no idea if she believed that, but I wasn't shitting around. "I wish someone loved me like this," I sighed, looking at a nude couple with the man spooning his round bellied wife and kissing her neck. "Oh, I MADE them do that," Koren said. She shared a few more fascinating secrets realities of the people and situations of each photo. She also shared the intensity of shoots with women prior to mastectomies, after surgery, or facing terminal illness. I was stunned and entertained by her memory and attention to the lives behind her photos. What I valued most from my two hours of art and introspection (and a bit of physical strain in holding poses - haha) with Koren was that any self-consciousness or tendency for anxious exhibitionist melted away in her presence. I became a medium for her art, and ended up with pieces that were not even me, but a moment of visual aesthetic made possible by a true professional with a good heart. These days, it seems like anyone can just shoot a photo and make it pop with Photoshop. Koren restored my faith in the fact that there is still a level of photography that not just anyone can reach with a digital device and the power of editing programs. I can see how boudoir posing could be addictive despite the high-end price (still reasonable considering all that she puts into it). However, I purposely want to wait until I do reach a milestone or a special occasion. Who knows what it will be, but I will definitely revisit Koren at that time, knowing it will be worth every penny, even without a special discount. Whether you are facing a special time in your life or want to put your stamp on someone's heart or just want to explore parts of you that you never knew, Koren Reyes's studio is the place to go.

The shoot was a lot of fun. Koren made me feel incredibly comfortable and was great about directing my poses which I was happy to not have to think of myself. She complimented me, making me feel good about myself in the moment. As someone who is not thrilled with their body, I hoped the shoot would help me learn to love it. Looking at my photos, I don't feel this as much as I hoped to. Most of them are hidden on the CD I got and I refuse to let my boyfriend of three years see them. Nonetheless, I was able to find 2 that I liked to order and he absolutely LOVES them. When choosing photos, Koren was very patient and very kind. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to her and recommend the experience for anyone (just remember she can't actually change what your body looks like!).

In addition to being a photographer, Lisa is a Doula - so she is very comfortable and loving towards pregnant moms and their families. Lisa does pregnancy photography, birth photos, newborn, welcome to the world, and so much more. Her photos capture the most beautiful essence of her clients, and I couldn't help but smile as I looked through her portfolio online and on facebook. Lisa gave me wardrobe suggestions, and also had several items for me to wear for the photo session. There is gorgeous natural light in her studio, and all of the props were soft and inviting. She helped me calm down and embrace my pregnancy and the beauty of creating a little life - all with a camera pointed at me :) I didn't have professional maternity photos taken for my first pregnancy, and I deeply regretted it afterwards. When I got engaged, I knew that there was no one else that I would rather have photograph our wedding. I remember telling Brad early on that James and I weren't the kind of couple that would be into cutesy poses, but after the post-ceremony oxytocin kicks in, and Brad gives the direction for a gentle kiss on the forehead, you're all about it, and it feels perfectly natural. He will take advantage of the light, and weather to make sure you capture the most beautiful and romantic photos possible on your special day. Throughout the rest of the day, other than the obligatory posed photos, Brad is quietly doing his job, capturing both the ordinary and extraordinary moments with professionalism and skill beyond compare. My experience with Jennifer Neves was the one significant source of stress in an otherwise perfect celebration. As a calm, organized person, I took every effort to plan thoroughly and communicate clearly. Unfortunately, Jennifer's negativity turned this into an unnecessarily stressful experience. Leading up to the wedding, Jennifer consistently expressed doubts about our timeline and criticized my plans in ways that felt discouraging. During our pre-wedding call, I provided a well-organized list of requested shots--simple family photos and individual shots with my bridesmaids. Despite my reassurances that we were a straightforward group, she insisted we wouldn't have time, remarking that "we're only as quick as the slowest link." She also commented that attending cocktail hour would be "unrealistic" due to my photo requests, despite my flexibility about missing it if necessary. Despite repeated assurances that my bridal party was prompt and prepared, she continued to doubt our plans, even discussing with my wedding planner how "unrealistic" my expectations were. Instead of being helpful, her approach added unnecessary stress, making me feel that she was setting us up to fail rather than offering solutions. Jennifer also fixated on Newport traffic, frequently reminding us how "horrible" it would be on the Fourth of July. This only added unnecessary stress over an aspect I had no control over. On the day itself, traffic was smooth, and she arrived nearly an hour early. However, instead of making use of the extra time calmly, she immediately started questioning whether everything was ready and seemed irritated that the flowers weren't set up--all despite her arriving ahead of schedule. Her negative energy was noticeable, creating tension for my bridal party, to the point that my matron of honor had to pull her aside and ask her to be more positive. Ironically, everything Jennifer had stressed about went smoothly. We finished hair and makeup early, had plenty of time to capture all the requested photos, and wrapped up over an hour ahead of schedule. She even acknowledged, "I typically don't believe most brides when they say they're organized, but I was wrong." While somewhat gratifying, this did little to erase the anxiety and tension she had created leading up to the wedding. After the ceremony, we even made it to cocktail hour--another point she had doubted. In hindsight, I deeply regret how much stress her pessimism added to what should have been a joyful experience. After the wedding, Jennifer's dismissive attitude continued. Upon receiving the photos, I was heartbroken to find that she hadn't captured the individual photos with my mother that I had requested and emphasized as being very important. Instead, there were plenty of individual shots with other family members, but only two with my mother. As a bride managing countless details, I trusted that my photographer would prioritize the key shots I had specified. When I reached out to ask if additional photos were available or edits could be made, Jennifer was unapologetic, blaming the sunlight and putting responsibility back on us. When I asked if any retouching was possible, her response was curt and unhelpful. If I could change one thing about my wedding, it would be choosing a photographer who could bring positivity, professionalism, and flexibility. Jennifer added more stress than any vendor should. If you want someone who will enhance your wedding day and make it feel special, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Why did we pick Allan? First, we loved his blended photographic style of 'lifestyle' and 'documentary'. It gave our pictures a candid and spontaneous "in the moment" perspective with an approachable and relaxed feel. Allan was responsive to all of our communications, very easy to work with, incredibly knowledgeable of the geographic area and actually recommended the spot we used for the wedding as well as for subsequent picture locations. He was friendly, prompt, flexible and affordable compared to others who wanted 2-3 times as much and whose pictures were not as good as Allan's. He wasn't the least expensive or the most, he was right on the money (pun kind of intended). He provided us with hundreds of final pictures (this was fantastic!), posted them on a web gallery and made the whole event very easy for us. And, captured it beautifully. They are based out of Philadelphia but I strongly urge you to still consider hiring them if you're out of state! Sebastian (the owner of the company and lead photographer) and Victor were a dream to work with. First, let's talk about the photography. Wow. These photos blew me away. I bawled looking through our album (in the best way) because Sebastian truly captured all of the emotions of the day. Your wedding day is such a blur and it's so easy to lose the little moments but he captured everything. Our posed photos were gorgeous and the candids were beautifully raw. We were initially very worried about lighting, since our venue was an industrial brewery. We had absolutely nothing to worry about with Fine Living! They truly are "masters of light" and everything was bright and colorful (without being washed out or over-saturated). I cannot wait to see what the photos look like printed. You also want to make sure you have a photo/video team that you vibe with, since they're there with you for most of the day. We felt so comfortable with them (seriously sooo chill and down to earth. Immaculate vibes). They captured so much during the ceremony and reception without being intrusive or in people's faces. For the video, to say we were blown away is an understatement. Victor somehow perfectly condensed our entire day into a stunning 5 minute video. It truly encapsulated the vibe, energy, and highlights of the day. Everything is so thoughtfully woven and you can tell every single audio/visual choice is purposeful. Our video is a work of art and I can't even tell you how many times we have watched it since delivery!!!!! I did have a couple minor things I wanted edited, after the initial delivery, and he changed them within mere hours of me reaching out.
