Like to get treated like crap and yelled at for the most mundane things while trying to have a good time? If the answer was YES to either of these questions then this is the charter boat for you! Recent talk of a fishing trip among friends reminded me that a review needed to be written for this guy. A while back a large group of us (15) hired Captain Ralph Brewster to take us out for a day of fishing off of Long Beach Island. It was the most miserable experience I have ever had fishing. The captain and his first mate were surly as hell, had no patience with the inexperienced members of our party and frequently got belligerent with us for the most mundane things. Here's just one of many examples of what we experienced; Throughout the day we were hooking skates and I did it myself on several occasions. Since a skate is an odd shaped fish and I didn't know how you hold it when removing the hook I asked the captain if he could remove it for me (he had told us he or his first mate would remove any hooks we couldn't). I purposely gave him 5 or 6 feet of slack on the line so he could remove the hook without worry of getting jabbed. The captain yelled at me for not tightening up the line - no explanation of how much less slack I should have had. About an hour later I hooked another skate. The first mate was busy so again I asked the captain to unhook it for me. This time I purposely tightened up most of the slack from the line so there was only about 3 feet between the fish and the end of the rod. The captain yelled at me again and this time told me to loosen the line, "what are you trying to do, hook me?" he barked. This pretty much exemplifies our entire day fishing with this jerk. We couldn't do anything right and he didn't bother to explain any hows or whys so we could actually correct the things we were doing wrong. Do everyone that enjoys day fishing trips a favor and don't give this guy any business because he doesn't belong working with people. The captain is based out of Forked River, NJ but works out of Barnegat Light, NJ.

And the more senior person at the front desk was very competent. However, the younger woman at the desk, who was there the rest of the time, was not. When my boys asked where was the beach (first timers, didn't know which direction to walk), she answered that she didn't know. Seriously?? You're working in a beach area! We didn't have enough bath towels. When I asked her for additional towels for the boys, she only had one bath and one hand towel. I actually had no bath towel in my room and had to use a hand towel to dry off. They were like sand paper. Towels are a pretty basic need for a hotel stay, not a luxury item. You shouldn't run out of towels. Also, the fee to replace a lost beach pass is exorbitant. $75!! We stayed at another hotel the next night and I inquired about their beach pass replacement fee, which was $50. This place is a glorified motel that charges like a 4 star hotel, while offering barely any amenities. We stayed at a different hotel the next night with incredible amenities and stellar customer service, for not much more than I paid at the Boulevard. Live and learn.

I chartered a half-day sail with Capt. Ken on his 34' Catalina for our family of 4. We were staying…read morein Cape May, NJ and drove an hour to Atlantic City where the Summer Breeze is docked. It was well worth the trip. We had a fantastic time. Capt. Ken was an excellent skipper and gave us tips on sailing (my husband and I just learned to sail last year.) When I started to feel sick, he produced a bag of lollipops and gave me one to help settle my stomach (it worked!) Then he suggested going back into the bay where the ride would be more pleasant. I appreciated that! Back in the bay, it was no time before we were tacking back and forth by ourselves. He also let each of our kids (ages 9 and 12) take the helm and do a few tacks while my husband and I worked the lines. Fun! All in all, it was a wonderful sailing experience with a considerate and attentive captain, and both of my kids loved it. That's all any parent can hope for!
