We've been coming there for years, boating in to enjoy the tiki bar. Today was wonderful. Katie waited on us, promptly and cheerfully. When the delivered food wasn't quite right, she quickly got a replacement. She is a wonderful server and has been there for years. Live band was really good today. Overall, we think the food (we've had fish tacos and cheesesteaks) is even better this year. Their french fries are to die for--you're crazy if you don't get them. Spent a lovely couple of hours having dinner the water. The food was well cooked and tasted delicious. I had the coconut shrimp with fries. The fries were lightly seasoned and tasted great. The shrimp was lovely. Our server was attentive without being intrusive, and very helpful. Food was great! Atmosphere a bit dated. We dined with you guys and sat near a table of 2 men and a child that were not very nice to the waitress. The waitress handled herself with such grace and kindness after the man continued to give her a hard time. Later, I listened as he requested for her to ask the manager to take off a percentage for him being he was a veteran. After she walked away, they started laughing and the one guy said, you're too much. It was clear that he wasn't being honest. He certainly wasn't a veteran and sadly the couple we were with has a son serving in the military. Unfortunately, this man took advantage of this opportunity and I was upset to see that someone would lie about serving our country. I did compliment the waitress for handling that table with dignity after being treated so poorly. She did say they honored a 10% off discount for him and it wasn't warranted because he lied. My husband and I have been going to the many years. I don't know if it's under new ownership or they change chefs. We were there last night. They always had on the menu Primavera vegetable dish. They took it off the menu so now when we go, I guess it's considered a special request. They downgraded the vegetables they give you celery snow peas it used to be filled with broccoli, zucchini and they charged us $28. I had flounder my dish was $28 Prior to that we had a different waitress and it was $20 for his meal. He doesn't eat seafood. He goes there because I like seafood. I can't understand $28 for the downgrade and vegetables. The dish isn't the same like it used to be. They should be ashamed of themselves. It's highway robbery. read more

Food was okay. Pricing not the best for the area. Gave me stall packaged breadsticks and later when leaving saw people eating rolls and I was told I have to ask for rolls ? I have never ate some where I have to request bread that is insane for a high end establishment. The waitress response is people waste the bread but who cares when I pay for my meal I can decide whether I eat it or not . I do not recommend this place . read more

We will have to give this place another try, but first impression wasn't a great one. My favorite part was the first gen Camaro sitting out front. My group is all locals but we were treated like bennies. It was the first hot day of the year, so everybody was out in full day drinking summer form. No table service, we had to walk up to the bar. No big deal when you're not getting an attitude from one of the bartenders while politely asking for some water. I included "when you have a minute," cause I knew she was busy, but she was too quick to bark back "you're gonna have to wait" to hear it. Completely understand the crowd and being overwhelmed but it ruined the rest of our time there and we left earlier than anticipated after that (and got food elsewhere.) Plenty of other places around to enjoy the sunshine. Thankfully the outside bar (Tiki bar) seems to be 21+. Don't quote me on that, I can't find anything to confirm it, but they were checking IDs to get in. read more

We have to captains inn for years and always get coconut shrimp with marmalade sauce and she crab soup which is supposed to come with sherry . On our most recent visit the coconut shrimp were half the size with a strange greasy sauce instead of the marmalade sauce we love . The she crab soup had bits of crab instead of chunks and no sherry . Please go back to the old recipes that we loved. read more

Went to the Captain's Inn last evening, it was like stepping into a time warp.. Very elderly patrons. My $30 Lobster Roll was not chilled & made with gobs of mayo . My Coleslaw was warm not even a chill on it. Very expensive food. Had to ask for Ice in my water. No bread was served just a basket with some Ritz crackers. Not sure how they are staying in business. The service was good and the ambience charming and funky. I don't like writing a bad review and hurting a business and it's employees, but the food was so poor and the prices so high that I feel people should be warned and aware before they spend a lot of their hard earned money here. Our fried calamari was rubbery, my broiled red snapper ($39) was previously frozen, dry and tasteless. My dad's soft shell crabs ($45) were flabby and grey looking--he gave them a five out of ten. My mom's coconut shrimp appetizer was the best of the lot and I think it was bought frozen and prepared and simply fried in the restaurant. I'm really mad that this places charges so much for just plain bad food. I feel ripped off. read more

The food was horrific. Ordered the fish tacos and it was all batter with little cod. An order of chicken quesadillas had little pieces of chicken. I'd say not even a full tenderloin made them up. Margarita was basically ice with a splash of tequila. We were very disappointed. The Tiki Bar has always been our favorite go to place for lunch. Voiced our concerns to our server, to no avail. I can't say enough about how wonderful this restaurant and Tiki Bar is!! Located by the water, Captain's Inn has been owned and/operated by the same family for almost 60 years. There is a laid back, comfortable feel with beautiful views. You can even arrive by boat!! I would describe the dress code as dressy casual, but fully casual at the Tiki Bar. But the main reason to go to a restaurant is to eat, and Captain's Inn has never disappointed. Lunch, dinner, brunch, drinks or private events, the food is consistently good quality with generous portions and outstanding taste. My favorite menu item is the She Crab soup served with a splash of brandy on top. A great comfort food! Of course their seafood menu is diverse and yummy, but their 'land' items are also diverse and yummy! In the over 36 years that I have been a patron of Captain's Inn, I have had so many different dishes it's hard to express how perfectly cooked and delicious they are. We have held many private parties there, from small intimate gatherings to parties with over 100 people. My familty and I had our Thanksgiving Dinner there yesterday. It was amazing. We were seated in the back room and our waitress Alexa waiting on us immediately for beverages. There were two buffet's for the main courses and buffets for all the sides. Food was hot and delicious. I'm not a turkey lover so I choose the prime rib and salmon. One was better than the other. The food was and bartenders inside the restaurant were great. The chicken was perfectly cooked and was full of flavor with and without the pumpkin pesto. The potatoes and vegetables were also perfectly cooked. My one and only complaint has to do with the security or lack thereof; especially on a night with a large amount of people going in and out of the tiki bar. I should not have to be concerned about beer bottles ending up ON my vehicle when leaving. And seeing as that it was two different kinds of beer, clearly it was two different people carrying beer bottles out of your establishment. As if finding one beer sitting on my running board wasn't enough, finding a second one dropped in to the spare tire carrier on my Jeep is completely unacceptable. Locals are out of their minds. Everyone likes the former owners and chef/food. The new group that has taken over has many of the same items and have added lower priced options then were available previously. We have been there 3 times since the change and have had in all honesty better meals with in some instances better prices than before. Local reviews seem to be hell bent on ruining this place in the name of the former owners. It was my understanding that the former owner retired. She was not forced out. It seems like people are trashing to trash. I had been coming to the Captains Inn since the early 80's. It was good, bad and then back to good as of the last few years. We find zero wrong with the new owners and offering. Kept a lot and added and adapted others. Nothing wrong with a little change. If you all keep it up we will all be eating at Jersey Mike's all the time. If you are all being honest the food and pricing is totally in line with previous owners. read more

I was hanging out with a friend in jersey and we were looking for a place to eat and came upon this seafood restaurant, it is off the beaten path kind of restaurant. Following gps you pass a bunch of nice looking houses, then you arrive at a dock and nearby is this wonderful restaurant. We came during a weekday for lunch and I thought I was in retirement land, I would say 95% of the people there were seniors. I've had weekday lunch in a lot of different places but this was unique. The menu had a lot of variety of seafood. I had the sea bass which was very juicy and tasted fresh out of the river. My partner had the lightly fried shrimp and scallops, this was lightly fried where you can still taste the shrimp and scallops, which was a win since some places tend to over fry seafood. Service was ok, they didn't refill our water for quite a bit of time. Food came out fast. Decor was quite back In the days, nicely decorated, not overly modern at all. They hold parties for special occasions. Definitely something to consider if looking for a space because there is plenty of it. Plenty of parking in their spacious lot. Prices are reasonable. There isn't a whole ton out here. We went a little off the main road to get here. Would recommend if you are in the vicinity. They were open and it was not even in season yet for the jersey shore areas, so many restaurants were closed. read more

We had a family party here in one of their party rooms. They were very accommodating to our large group. We did have to guarantee 25 people which was not an issue for us. We were able to pick the menu and get an open bar for our guests. The servers were friendly who took care of our party and helped us with anything we needed. Very cute atmosphere inside and feels perfect for the shore. The food was average and I know that some in our group have come for dinner or lunch and have spoken highly of it- so maybe it was just large quantities and what we picked. Everyone had a nice time. We went here for a birthday dinner on a Monday night. Surprisingly busy, we were seated immediately by a friendly hostess. Still as I remember it, we sat on the windows overlooking the tiki bar. A nice casual salty atmosphere. Service was quick and efficient as we ordered our appetizers. The star of the show was the stuffed portobello mushroom with jumbo lump crab. Just devine! I will definitely order that next time. We also ordered fried Tubes & Tentacles (Calamari) but there were no tentacles! Still crispy and tender, they were delicious. For entrees, we ordered the twin jumbo lump crab cakes with a side of garlic mashed and veges. The crab cakes were very good, albeit breaded, and had some jumbo lump crab in them. The garlic mashed were very mild in flavor and the mixed veges were great! Tender and fresh brussel sprout halves were the star of that side! My partner ordered the Mariner's Platter which was fried fish, scallops, shrimp and clam strips. It was heavily fried and just ok. He said he wouldn't order it again. Most of it went home. All in all, a very good meal. We're looking forward to going back to try more appetizer and dinner selections. I'm definitely getting the stuffed portobello mushroom again!! read more
