We walked around the center, checked out the museum (who knew how many different birds were black with white markings, but each very distinct?), took a bunch of pictures and yes, we were immediately swarmed by mosquitos when we got out of the car. Bring your repellent! We took the short gravel road drive down to Wrights pond, because this is the highest the water has been in 15 years and Janet said there was an abundance of wildlife right by your feet. Not wrong, we saw a deer, and hundreds of birds. Really unique area to explore, this little oasis in the middle of the desert and at the foot of the mountains.

The rest of them were called, "Wow! Look at that!", birds. If you go in late late May, early June, cover your body and use mosquito repellent where you're exposed. We were just passing through, but now that I know what a treasure Malheur is and that the best time of year is in March/April I'll be back for more than a few hours.

But it lacked one thing you could tell that the personnel running the park didn't really seem to be involved with the guests. Think Biltmore servants with there own stairs and passage ways so the guests weren't disturbed. Then we went to Cath's Place in Hines/Burns. It was a Saturday and she came out a greeted us like we were old friends. Cathi will try and greet all her guests, but she has a postal job that requires her to be gone 4 hours a day. She also works on all her equipment herself, while making her little slice of earth come alive with flowers and amenities. She has plans to expand but that will have to wait until she has the time and money to do it right. What I witnessed on Saturday night around nine, we were taking our dogs out for the last time before bed. People were coming to her park broke down (broken water hose) and they came to the park in their tow car, she stayed with them until the wrecker came and set their coach in place and hooked up. When I remarked that she went above and beyond the call of duty. She said, "That's what people do for each other."

For those who don't camp the issue is mosquitoes. There is a swampy area a nearby and if there is no breeze especially in the evening, they can be overwhelming. I am from Alaska and the mosquito is the state bird. Here they are equally impressive. If you have screens and bug dope, they are manageable because it's mainly in the evening they are a pain. If you don't, prepare it's uncomfortable and those campers would say two stars.

This review is for the Page Springs Campground - it has to be one of the nicest campgrounds I've stayed in. It's run by the BLM - they take credit cards or cash, but will charge you "extra" for your vehicle - over and above the cost of the campsite. Yes - campsite and car are charged separately. We paid $21 per night for camp and 1 car. The sites are very large and spread out. Privacy was not an issue. Some were shaded and some were out in the open. It's a very popular campground though, and is first come, first serve. We showed up on an October Thursday at 5pm and there were only 2 sites left. There are other private and BLM campgrounds nearby, though not nearly as nice.

It's on a dirt road but don't let that put you off, these two nanna's drove a Ford C-Max with exactly 5.5" of clearance to the top and never hit a bump. It's a beautiful dirt road. If dirt roads can be called beautiful. And the views are drop dead gorgeous. Imagine standing on the edge of a 6,000 foot cliff with a white desert below, black mountains in the distance and clouds here and there that you're looking down on. This isn't my first dog and pony show with escarpments like this, but it was definitely one of the most majestic and sublime I've seen. The drive up is also beautiful, but in a, gosh, what a pretty landscape, sort of way. It's the top that you come for though, if you're a religious person you could probably find God up there, it's that jaw dropping. For a bathroom; about 1/2 way up look for Fish Lake on a little spur road. There are also a few campgrounds up there. What a find. Hopefully someday I'll be back but next time with a motor home so I can spend some time there and do some serious trekking.

We drove right past the sign for Starr and turned around to check it out...very glad we did. The Starr Campground sits right off the highway and has 11 sites set in 2 sections, an upper loop and a lower section. When we stayed last Thursday night there was only one other party camping. Our neighbors were set up in the lower section where the sites are a bit more spread out, while we opted to stay in the loop nearer the highway. Nothing at the campground is far from the highway, but we found it peaceful. Each section has a vault toilet, and the upper one was surprisingly clean, as was the campground overall. The setting is lovely, engulfed in beautiful trees...including some larches that were turning their gorgeous yellow while we were there. The sites at Starr are only $6, a tiny price to pay for a beautiful night in the Malheur Forest. Highly Recommend!

The cabin barely met our needs, and the location is beautiful. Unfortunately, a reservation misunderstanding left a very negative impression. Throughout our email correspondence, I consistently referred to our stay as a three-night reservation. When requesting new dates, I specifically asked to arrive Monday and depart Thursday, intending a three-night stay. At no point was I told that the reservation would remain a four-night booking despite the date change. After our stay, I requested a refund or credit for the unused night, explaining the misunderstanding and providing the email history. The resort declined, stating that the reservation remained subject to its cancellation policy and that no further consideration would be given. I acknowledge that I should have caught the discrepancy in the confirmation, but I believe this was a genuine mutual misunderstanding. What disappointed me most was not the policy itself, but the unwillingness to offer any goodwill accommodation or future-stay credit despite the circumstances. The property is marginal, but prospective guests should carefully review every reservation confirmation and any reservation changes, as policies appear to be enforced very strictly.

Everyone I've met at events and meetings is super nice and not snubby as tends to be the case with groups such as this. I've visited a few in the other places I've lived and the Oregon Ferret Shelter was definitely the most welcoming. If you're looking to adopt a ferret, and have researched what it means to keep one as a pet, I definitely recommend adopting one from here. They also offer ferret boarding for a very reasonable price and you know your ferrets will be well taken care of. If you need a place to surrender your ferret where you know they will be cared for until they find a great new home, then this is good place as well. Like I said, its clean, cozy, and you can tell everyone there cares about ferrets.
