I dropped my car off on a Tuesday at 8 AM, which was scheduled the previous Wednesday. I requested a tire rotation, a front and rear wheel alignment, and a flush of the A/C drain unit. I was told to expect my vehicle to be restored within a few hours. Five hours passed, and I called CarX asking about the status of my vehicle. I was told: "Your A/C was fixed and running perfectly, the front alignment is complete, we're working on the rear alignment." I was also told that minimal time was needed to resolve the remaining issues. 3.5 hours had passed, and I contacted CarX again. The mechanic said they needed 30 minutes and that the car would be complete, so I commuted to the shop. I was told the mechanic was having an issue with a rear alignment bolt and given the option to take my vehicle because I had work. At that point, I took my vehicle because if they wanted to fix it, they had 8.5 hours to do so. I was told to bring my car back so the work can be completed. My vehicle will never visit CarX again. Upon receiving my vehicle, I immediately turned on my A/C, it did not work, and my front wheel alignment was still faulty. They did not rotate my tires, they did not complete the rear wheel alignment, and they did not flush the A/C drain unit. My car was the same condition when I dropped it off that morning. It sucks because I was told these things were complete. I do not recommend CarX. I pray the mechanics are truthful with all clients and complete the work they say they will do. It is neither right nor fun to drive 6+ hours with NO A/C during the hottest time of year. I trusted CarX, and I was let down. read more

I got in and out quickly and they were extremely informative. they even physically showed me under my car what was up with my oil stuff. And good prices too. 5 stars is not enough!!! We were driving from NYC to Vegas, stopping along the way. When the floor in the drivers side started to puddle water, we were very worried. Our route was planned and we were hours away from a Kia dealership. After calling a dozen mechanics, they said to come in and put our mind at ease. I typically go to this location because it's close to my house. Normally I have liked going here. But this last time I went to get a oil change, they did not check my brakes, rotated my tires and honestly I'm not even sure they changed my oil. They did not leave a sticker on my car or give me any information on how the "full service" check went. Also they told me I needed new brakes urgently two years ago and I've seen other mechanics since who claim they are fine. Not all is bad though, they are friendly, clean and price seems reasonable. Also if your tire needs some air they will fill them for free. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. They charged me for a service they did not do. I came in to have my tire patched because of a screw that had been lodged in the tire. They marked the tire as though they were going to fix the problem. I left assuming everything was fixed because the tire was already put back on my car when I came back. When I went back home to Minneapolis to have a routine service check at the dealership, they showed me the screw was still in the tire and the tire had not been patched. Are you kidding me? You didn't fix the tire AND you charged me blood money for doing nothing. Plus I missed an hour of work to be here and for a college student that's money I need. No remorse, no comment, what kind of BS is this? Don't be fooled by these corporate snakes with coupons. This place is a load of shit. read more

For the past few year that I have been living in Ames, IA Car X has been by far the best mechanic shop that I have been to. Their prices are on the less expensive end of fair, their customer service is top notch. I go in there and they treat me like family. When they quote you a price. That is the price there are no surprises. As for fixing the car, when they fix it, it stays fixed, unlike some other mechanic shops in town. Nathan is great to work with and I would highly recommend them for anything that your car needs, they are the best in town. read more

All I needed was a simple tire repair service. After I received a call that it's done and ready, I went to pick it up. The guy at the front desk told ne he would "take care" of my patch work of I gave a five star review. I insisted that I'd rather pay and proceeded to give him my card. He said he closed the system and can't take my payment and the patch work is on them. (Seriously? who closes their system 30 mins before your business closes?) Guess what, I woke up the next day to a completley flat tire. There is nothing wrong is asking your customers t ok rate you, but first, do your job! read more

My original review with 5 stars for some reason has been taken down so I will say it again, this CarX has done wonders for my family! My son attends ISU & being new to the area we did not know where to bring his car in & not get overcharged. That is not the case here. Nathan & his crew were absolutely AMAZING! You walk in & are greeted like family. The lobby/restroom is very clean. My son needed a new muffler on his Nissan so we brought it in, but it turned out he had a hole in his gas tank as well. I received a call from Nathan letting me know he can fix the muffler but the gas tank had a hole in it. He went out of his way to look for an inexpensive gas tank. Meanwhile they fixed the muffler & repaired the gas tank until we decided if we were going to keep the car or look for a new one. When I went to pay there were no extra charges, which I thought was extremely kind since they had to take the time to patch the gas tank. We went to buy my son a new car since the tank was not worth fixing & Nathan took the time to double check the Infiniti that we purchased. This CarX goes above & beyond! Since that very first time a couple years ago we continue to bring my son's car in for all repairs & oil changes. If you want an honest car repair shop that does not over charge this is the shop to go to! Ty for the GREAT service! read more

Carx broke pieces of trim on the interior of my car during a repair and my tools that were in my car were stolen while they had it. I authorized Carx to repair a shift assembly on my car after they diagnosed it and said that it was bad and the reason my car would not start. I just had replaced the shift assemby 1 yr ago, but he said that was definitely the problem, so I agreed. Then when that was fixed they called the next morning to say now I needed a new alternator. That my car would not start for them and that they tested it and it too was bad. Even though the evening before my car started and ran great Dustin told me after the shift assembly was replaced. I told him to replace it since he said now that was the problem and i needed my car running! I asked him to keep the old parts because I wanted to get them tested after they were done as i didn't believe the shift assembly was ever bad. I didn't tell them that was my reasoning, I just asked him to keep the removed parts. During the repair they broke my serpentine belt which was less than 3 months old and replaced it without charge. The mechanic who broke it, Jerry, I believe his name was acted like they did me a favor by giving me a new one. I informed him mine was already new. His original explanation as to how it broke was that it just "snapped" when the car was being taken off of the tow truck. That made no sense to me. Later Dustin said no that was not correct, that it frayed as they removed the alternator and broke, and that the pulleys were probably too tight. The pulleys were also replaced a few months ago and were running perfectly. Shortly after leaving Carx, within 5 minutes of driving out of their lot I noticed that a piece of woodgrain trim around my shifter was cracked, the shifter/trim was not properly seated and both knee pads that go under the dash assembly were broken where they meet the center console they removed. I also noticed my Mercedes tools that were in my car when they got it were strewn about my car and several pieces of the kit were now missing. I immediately called and spoke with the manager, Dustin. He asked me to bring it in on Monday, as this was Saturday afternoon and they were closed on Sunday, and they would fix it, he said he was going to ask around about my missing tools and confirmed he remembered seeing them in my car. On Monday I came in and they were going to get to the part and then show me why it was not sitting properly. They tried to say a bolt had been cut out prior to them makinnthe repair. I knew he was lying because I replaced the shift assembly myself last time and I never cut a bolt out, and having a missing bolt certainly would not cause it to sit higher up and not seat properly!! Of course he never called me back to see it as they said they would. They put it back together, and it still did not sit right. I looked it over with Dustin and noticed they had now cracked a second woodgrain piece that covered the PRNDL display. The knee pads were still broken and my tools could not be found. They offered to refund me $200 to call it even. I told them no, I wanted to find out what the price would be to fix it right. After spending hours trying to locate the parts, one of which has been discontinued, I went to the dealer for an estimate to get it repaired properly. The dealer discounted the parts for them significantly but it was still almost $1000 worth of damage, not including the tools! I called Carx to tell Dustin about the quote. He then stated that Carx would purchase the 2 woodgrain pieces they broke, if they can get them from the dealer, and they would install them. They would not fix the knee pads or pay for my stolen tools. He said he thought that was fair because they were "meeting me in the middle". I do not see anything fair about them only replacing half of what they broke and me being left with damage to my car that they caused. Furthermore, when i gave them the chance to make it right, they broke an additional piece. I do not want them ever touching my car again. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Oh yeah, and they never saved the parts I asked them to, they claimed they threw away the shift assembly and sent the alternator back for a core refund. But nothing on my bill of almost $1200 showed a core refund or a breakdown of labor charges or anything, just listed the repairs and a total. read more

When I had my car evaluated by two other mechanics they told me that was literally nothing wrong with my car. When confronted they denied everything, even suggested that I hadn't brought my car in at all. read more

Spent 8 hours trying to get a tune up. Missed work and spent the day patiently waiting for my car because I needed it to drive home for the weekend. At 5 pm the guy comes in and says that the car was finished and they were just taking it for a test drive. They come back from the test drive and proceed to tell me that something came loose and the mechanic that was fixing my car had just left for the day. They said it'd would be fixed by the next day when the mechanic comes back in. I got frustrated, and told the guy that I needed my car to drive home for a funeral that weekend. How was I suppose to get home? I said a few cuss word. The guy working upfront (who was just filling in for the day) had been updating me about my car understood my frustration and attempting to help me find a ride home when the mechanic from the back came out and told me that I couldn't cuss in there because he was "a man of god, and he was going to call the policy if I did not stop cussing." Policy came and the guy upfront offered to take me home. The mechanic was a rude bigot. read more

I took my car in with the service engine soon light on. They charged $50 to read the codes and told me the catalytic converter was bad. Almost $1400 (parts and labor) later I leave with a new catalytic converter. A week later, the light is on again. I then went to a mechanic that was closer to home. He checked the codes (for free) and said since the vehicle was running fine, it was the O2 sensor. He also said since the vehilce was running fine before, I most likely didn't need a new catalytic converter (Car-x asked and I answered so). He cleared the code for me and about a week later, the light is on again. I called Car-X to question their repair and the manager told me he even 'looked at it with the mechanic' and determined it was bad. I called another shop (3rd shop) to get another opinion. Both subsequent mechanics I talked to stated that generally you cant tell by 'looking' that the cat. conv. is bad. The 3rd shop also said I most likely did not have a bad cat. conv. As I am at a non Car-X shop waiting for the O2 sensor to be replace, the mechanic informs me that both O2 sensors (the one ahead and after the cat. conv. are throwing codes. When he pulled them, the sensor ahead of the cat. appears to have been touched in the sensor area, which ruined it. He said both O2 sensors are the original parts. I also had a low coolant warning come on as I was driving away from Car-X, which was not happening before I went there. I'm not seeing any leaks, so I added more coolant and water. That warning has not come on again in almost a month. I chalked it up to coincidence, but in light what has transipred, I'm suspect. They had no need to even touch the cooling system. When I called to question the repair, the manager of course defended the store but offered to do another diagnostic and replace the O2 sensor at no additional cost to me if the diagnostic indicated that was the issue. I'm sure they aren't worried aobut being out a $100 sensor after bilking me out of a $1000 catalytic converter. I went to Car-X because they had better customer reviews than other places in Ames (which was where I happened to be that morning) that would have been open on Saturday, but I definitely won't be back. I've had less than stellar service at other Des Moines Car-X locations, but I've never felt like I had been bilked before. Obviously, at this point, there is nothing to prove one way or another, but I know what I think happened. read more
