I needed to have a screw removed from the left front tire of my wife's car and the hole plugged. (First, it should be pointed out that Sophia, Mike, who was the owner, and technician Kyle, are no longer at the Whiting CarX. They were the ones who made that CarX great. They cared about the customers and honored their commitments and promises, and appointments. That is no more.) I made an appointment over the phone to have the tire repaired the following day at 8:30 in the morning. I got there at 7:45 am and entered the customer area. I mentioned to the man behind the counter about my appointment and that I would wait for the car. He informed me that there was a car ahead of mine, there was only one mechanic working, and he was not sure how long it would take to get mine done. I told him I would wait for the car and went to sit down in the waiting area. There was a lady waiting for her car to be finished already sitting in the waiting area. I looked for a seat but the remaining seats were covered with floor mats waiting to be put down on the floor. Not wanting to crowd the lady by sitting next to her, I decided to leave. I had the tire repaired by a shop down the street in 30 minutes. I know that CarX corporate had come to the Whiting business and had started making changes to the systems and files that the previous owners had been using. This had really upset the people working there and there was friction going on. Next thing I knew was the business was under new management and the usual workers were gone along with the usual good service and family like atmosphere that had prevailed. I made an appointment 2 days in advance online for a 10am drop off, it states a representative will contact me within 1 hour depending on the time of the appointment. 48 hours had passed and still nobody contacted me to confirm so I proceeded to drop my car off at 10am and the car didn't get lifted and looked at until after 3:30pm and it's now 4:50pm -"at the time of this review and still nobody called me. I called at 2pm and was told in 1 hour someone will call me and nothing, I called back at 4:30 and was then told someone will call me in 15mins and still nothing. Let me say this , DO NOT make an online appointment it's a complete crock and a waste of time. Best to stick with your dealership if your car is new or acouple of years old it'll be more money but the car will get DONE. read more

When you must return 3 times to the Car X on Calumet Ave, in Whiting, Indiana, something's definitely wrong! I paid $782.00 for brake job that was absolutely unacceptable! Twice I almost ran into the car ahead of me! I had to pump the brakes & press them to the floor in order to stop completely! With that being said, I went to Car X 17065 S Torrence Ave in Lansing. There they undone & redone the brakes properly! DO NOT GO TO 1337 CALUMET FOR YOUR CAR REPAIRS. read more

I was driving into work in 23° weather and realized my tire was dangerously low, Sophia Delgado, Assistant store manager at the CarX in Whiting was so kind and graciously offered to fill air in my tires so that I could get to work safely. I was very impressed by this car repair shop. I had trouble on the Indiana toll road and dropped the car off for an evaluation. It turned out just to be a piece of road junk that had adhered itself to my tire. But it would have been easy for them to think of all kinds of things that needed repair and charge me for them. I would never have known the difference because it drove fine after the road junk fell off the tire. They charged me nothing at all, even though they spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what was wrong with it. This is the kind of behavior from a shop that makes you realize how important it is to have a reliable mechanic. Thanks especially to Mike and Nate who did the work. I really like this place. The people are really kind and they work as fast as they can. CarX usually has nice sales every so often. Seems like I'm synced with their oil change and tire rotation sale. Things to note... First off they are really well at listening to what you want, and taking notes for the mechanic. The mechanic enters your car with his own paper floor mat and gives your car a quick drive. The garage is viewable from the waiting room so that you can keep an eye on your baby and make sure they really are rotating your tires. ;p If needed the mechanic will walk you to your car to show you things... Prolly because you where a bad parent, or there is something you should see. I've also seen them offer home drop off and pickup service for jobs that will take a bit more time. When it's time to pay, they give you a nice run down of anything that needs to be pointed out. They have also applied coupons to my bill when I didn't even have the coupon or even know about the coupon! As far as I can tell, they also top off your fluids, including filling a completely empty windshield washer fluid reservoir... mine is usually always empty. Lol The waiting room has magazines and newspapers and a television. There is complimentary coffee, and a soda machine in the shop. There is also a really clean restroom, complete with toilet seat liners and air freshener. I've seen dirtier restrooms at some of the nicer restaurants I've eaten at! Gasp! I suppose if they had free wifi and power outlets, I'd give em the full five stars; or if they cleaned my windows... But now I'm just being a snob. Lol Hmmm... right before I left the manager told me that if I wanted to come back for my brake and alignment service to give him a call and he'll hold my spot in the queue while I drive over so I don't have to wait too long. Everyone here is nice enough but be careful because you could end up spending A LOT more money than you have to. If you have a newer car and just need routine work done you will probably be alright but steer clear for anything more involved. I took my 1994 Cadillac there for an alignment after I replaced the worn out air suspension with an after market kit designed to convert the car to a standard suspension. I got a call about an hour after dropping the car off stating they couldn't do the alignment because the wrong suspension was on the car. The guy on the phone then went on to quote me $7500.00 to put the "correct" suspension on the car. I knew the cost of the air ride, hence why I went with the aftermarket. Anyone who knows anything about cars know that the Lincoln/Cadillac suspension conversions are very common and used all the time. Somehow this Car-X never heard of it and thought it was some rigged up standard suspension. How on earth they expect anyone to pay $7500 for suspension on a $2500 car is beyond me! Long story short I called an independent shop, told them the story and they knew exactly what I was talking about and said I could swing the car on by the next day. $49.95 later the car was all set and the shop even complimented me on the neat install. Obviously my case was rather extreme but it made me realize that they probably do with everything. Perhaps they quote you $150 to fix something when there is a commonly used $100 option that they know nothing about. My advice is stick with the independent shops, they know a lot more about various options, which ones works, which ones don't, etc. Also, for those of you wondering, I spent $800 on the conversion kit and paid the independent shop $50 to align the car. All in all that is roughly a $6650.00 saving over what Car-X quotes. Sure you can argue I didn't pay labor for the kit install but I think you could easily pay someone out of the $6650 surplus if you so choose. read more

This place is amazing. I've been here four or five times for oil changes and miscellaneous repairs. Mike and the team are beyond professional and really care about customer service. They helped me troubleshoot a tire leak issue that took two visits and the price was very fair. They also have serviced my brakes and have had no issues since that was done over a year ago. Last time I was there they even installed my front license place for me free of charge! I'm moving and will no longer be close enough to go back but I had to leave a glowing review in hopes someone else finds this shop and has as wonderful an experience as I did! read more

When we first got our car (a prius) I was pretty stern on going to the Toyota dealership to have any work done. Well I was pretty sick of paying their oil change price so decided to take it to Car-X, which is half a block from my house. The man I always talk to is Mike. He is the most helpful guy there. A while back we took the car in for an oil change and tire rotation before we drove to Florida. Mike had everything taken care of. I noticed though when I left there was an odd noise, I didn't start freaking out about it until we go into Highland. I called Mike right away and he said he would stay later to check it out if I could come back. We were already pretty far but he called the Car-X in Highland and they ended up staying 15 minutes over closing time just to check on the car. (well come to find out, the tread was a bit uneven from me not getting the tires rotated regularly)... Mike told me to come back the following Monday and he would check everything out. They have good prices, their customer service is amazing and I'm going to be a customer for life. also, they have a suicide prevention foundation set up at the front desk, I always make sure to have cash on hand to donate. It touches me a great deal since I lost a parent to suicide, it's a great cause and I love that they always have the box (for donations) up. read more

Best car shop around. I've always been leery walking into these chain shops, especially being a female, and no mechanical knowledge. Have received high quotes with things not needed. Once on my fourth different quote, had a male friend drop in while my car was still up, amazingly the quote dropped from over $500 to less than $250 without explanation. I took my car, bought the $80 in parts and googled and did it myself in about 10 hours. No fun. So happy to have found Mike and his crew. They are honest, when can, give options as to whether your just trying to keep your beater alive, or your new car in tip top shape. I brought my car in today for oil change and brake pads. Turns out I just needed an oil change, breaks fine for some time still. Many other shops I've gone in would have been slapping new pads, rotors and calipers on there at a pretty penny. When is a "free inspection" not a free inspection? When it includes a $70 diagnosis charge. The sign advertises FREE INSPECTIONS when I stopped in last week they didn't mention a charge.
