The countertop subcontractor they used was excellent -- punctual, clean, and detail-oriented, with great craftsmanship and customer service. Unfortunately, my experience with the prime contractor, Competitive Painters, and the owner, Robert, was very disappointing. His two workers were polite and hardworking, clearly trying to do the right thing, but Robert repeatedly made excuses instead of addressing obvious issues. The time he spent explaining why something couldn't be fixed was often longer than it would've taken to just fix it. He even said his goal was to be "good enough," which summed up the entire experience -- no attention to detail, no commitment to quality, and a focus on checking the box and finishing as quickly as possible rather than delivering good work. He was also condescending whenever I raised valid concerns or asked questions. It was clear that staining is not his area of expertise -- most of his previous work seems to focus on painted cabinets -- and he was defensive when I pointed out uneven tones, color inconsistencies, or areas that were clearly missed or didn't look good. In the end, I let them finish just to have the job completed, knowing I'd need to hire someone else to repaint the newly stained cabinet doors to achieve the look I originally requested. While the countertop subcontractor and Robert's crew were great, I would not recommend Competitive Painters for cabinet refinishing, staining, or kitchen remodeling work.

I hired this company to redo a shower stall. Because they were already going to be doing concrete…read morework in the shower stall, I pointed out two, small, hand-sized areas of concrete that needed patching on my balcony. The owner Chris, said he would not charge me because it was negligible. I was happy that they were a good faith company who wouldn't nickel and dime me. Boy, I turned out to be wrong on that! Their work in the shower was just alright. It required a second pass to fix some lines that were not quite straight and they offered to fix it. The shower was substantially less work than initially scoped. The estimate was for a much larger job than needed to be done to fix the shower. I expected to get a discount on the initial estimate. Chris discounted me $200. I agree to pay him the full estimate minus $200 for services not rendered in the initial estimate. After the job is complete, Chris suddenly springs me with an additional charge of $100. He wants to charge me for the balcony patches, which were two child's hand-sized areas. This was quite irritating because not only did they not have to do as much of a job on the shower as they initially thought, but he was going to flip-flop on his initial word that he wouldn't charge me for patching the balcony concrete. He began harassing me via e-mail, using adjectives like "ridiculous" and questioning my character. This was extremely unprofessional and uncalled for. Within a couple of emails he began threatening to take out a lien on my property. That sounded odd to me, like he was bullying and on an anger trip rather than negotiating like a regular contractor. A lien on my property for a dispute over $100? Sounded unreasonable. I would have gladly paid the $100 if he had been honest with the charge up-front, or if he had sent me a change order in writing saying that the balcony patching would take more effort and he wanted to charge for the balcony. It was neither. The patches were tiny and he did much less work in the shower than he initially expected to have to do. It seemed like he was extorting me for additional money after the work was complete because he felt he could get away with threatening me, or because he didn't really like the fact that he had to do a second pass on the shower floor to get it right. I began talking to my condo building manager about this contractor. I learned that he fired one of his workers who was known for doing outstanding work on bathrooms, then threatened him physically if he ever worked on remodeling any of our building units. In short, this guy is trouble. Like the other reviewer also noted, he changes price quotes in the middle of a job or after the job is done, and gets nasty and short-tempered. There are a ton of contractors out there, save yourself a headache.

I contacted several contractors in the Charlottesville area but no one seemed to have the time or was interested in doing the job. One contractor said it would take 4 to 6 WEEKS to do the job and since she was going to be in respite care in a nearby senior living center at $175 per day this was not practical. As a last resort, I contacted Rolando. Based on my history with him, I knew he could do the job. He didn't hesitate. He gave me a bid on the job based only on pictures I took on my iPhone. He started the job in about 3 weeks. He left a crew of 2 men and they stayed in the house with me until the job was done. They worked long hours and finished the bathroom in 5 1/2 days. Then they replaced the flooring in the family room and kitchen. As always, they ran a clean job, sweeping and vacuuming constantly. They also replaced the rotten facia board on the front of the house and an exterior door to the utility room. There were several times when I had to leave the guys alone in the house and I was completely comfortable doing so. When she returned home after a 12 day stay in the facility, my mother-in-law said it was like being in a new house. She loves the bathroom and the new floor. She can now safely age in place. Installers show up without stair runners, never added to the work order, never ordered. Got passed around from person to person until I ended up with Mike, who was totally dismissive. Said Warren didn't work there anymore and we "couldn't" have stair runners with LVP anyway. No explanation for why no one reached out to us after Warren left or why we were sold stair runners and LVP if they weren't compatible (which isn't true). Finally had to go to corporate to get someone to take this seriously. Now all of a sudden we *can* have stair runners but someone has to come measure, order them, then schedule a separate installation. No apology, no explanation for what happened or who dropped the ball. I would never work with this company again and we are still trying to unravel what happened with our installation. No accountability, no apology, just Mike offering lame excuses about how he, the director of operations, has no idea what's going on.
