This was my second time using Carbon Health. The first time, when I'd injured a finger, was at Grand Ave. and the experience was great. This was the opposite. I went in with pain in what felt like my carotid artery, side of the neck. I wanted to get a scan to see what was going on. So the PA wrote up an order from a scan and I raced to a facility in Orinda. When I arrived they told me that the order was so poorly written that they had no idea what kind of scan to give me. When they tried calling - MULTIPLE TIMES OVER 15 MINUTES - no one picked up the phone! So I went back and complained. They were largely indifferent but did write up a new order. I managed to get a scan appointment the next morning at Alta Bates and had the scan sent both to the PA and my regular doctor. I never heard a word back from the PA. And when I went to see my doctor last week he laughed and said this is the problem with many of the urgent care places as he pointed out that they ordered entirely the wrong scan for me. So now I have a bill from Alta Bates for a scan I didn't need and have to go to another place to get the right scan. I also have a bill from Carbon Health for their grossly incompetent handling of my situation, so thanks for that. I think these places are good for basic injuries but beyond that the level of incompetence is jaw dropping. At least it was in my case. read more

I've gone here twice, both with poor results. The first time, I thought I had a UTI so I went in for a test. They ended up screwing up the test and being unable to provide me with results. However, they WERE able to accidentally provide me with several other random people's test results within their "secure" app. A HIPPA violation much? The second time, I went in as I thought I had an ear and eye infection. After paying my co-pay, they brought me to another room where the doctor told me that I did indeed have an eye and ear infection and prescribed me antibiotics. This was after they surprised me with $80 charge to spray a water bottle in my ear so they could see inside my ear. They didn't advise that this would cost $80 and it's not intuitive like, oh squirting water, this is gonna be an extra $80! Also: why is it discovering whether or not I have a super common infection not covered by insurance? I'm guessing a coding error on their end. The best part comes when I get to the pharmacy after my appointment. They had written my prescription so poorly that the pharmacist was unable to fill it. After trying for over an hour to reach them with NO ANSWER, they told me to go home. At this point, I texted a doctor relative who asked me a few questions the doctors at Carbon Health had not, like whether or not I had a cold. She then advised that my infections sounded viral, and antibiotics were not necessary. So I took her advice. Skipped the antibiotics and my infections cleared up on their own. Now I'm just saddled with a hefty bill for Carbon Health's squirt gun skills and the fact that I wasted hours of my time getting false advice from them. DO NOT USE. You're better off Googling your symptoms as they are unable to diagnose and treat even the most common medical issues. read more

Terrible. After a week of insomnia, I knew I had to seek medical help for my sleep. Unfortunately, Carbon has not intention of providing it. The doctor I saw told me she would not prescribe me any medication. She rudely patronized me and told me to try over-the-counter solutions, even as I told her I've tried every solution I could possibly think of. She told me simply to wait another week and see what happens. Looks like I'll have Carbon to thank for another week of agonizing sleeplessness. Worst medical service ever. read more

They'll promise to bill your insurance and then won't. Then, having charged your credit card, there is nobody to contact. I've called their billing department repeatedly and left messages, called their front office, called corporate, emailed support, tried live chat, gone in to the clinic in person, I've even tried Twitter. Zero response. They never submitted a claim to my insurance, charged me $395 on my credit card, and there is nobody to contact to resolve it. Don't go here unless you are cash pay. read more

I was really impressed with this location! I fell and was afraid I might have fractured my ankle. As soon as we arrived they had someone bring out a wheelchair to our car and helped me check in. I was afraid the wait time would be long and with covid I was hesitant to go to a medical facility but I was so pleased with how speedy their service was and the steps they took to keep everyone safe. All in all, we were there about an hour and that's with X-rays taken and all. Everyone was super friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend going here if you're looking for immediate care. read more

I smashed my finger and had to get my mail drained, the staff there was so nice and there was barely any wait. The x ray tech, Kal, I think was his name was so funny and kind making me less nervous about the drainage. My PA, Ms. Scott, was also so nice and accommodating! My poor body could not handle a second round of intense colds and sinusitis. I had done the whole video-phone appointment online for the first round, but this time I wanted to be seen. Direct Urgent Care had long hours and a ton of great reviews on Yelp. And for good reason! I called in on a Friday at 10:30am. The earliest appointment available was 3pm. They welcomed me as a walk-in. Within 45 minutes of arrival, I was seen by a nurse practitioner who had decided that I had suffered enough (OVER A MONTH with a horrendous cold, serial cough, and a nose that ran more than runners at the Bay to Breakers). The treatment: a nebulizer treatment in-office, x-rays for pneumonia checks, cough syrup with codeine, steroids to open up the bronchials, and antibiotics to keep the sinusitis in check. Within two hours of receiving this treatment, I had a huge improvement and could actually sleep which meant I could heal. Meanwhile, the staff is nice, paid metered parking wasn't hard to find, free wifi while waiting at the office, and water/Keurig machines. I would totally go back to this place if in a pinch again. read more

I had a really pleasant experience at this urgent care. It was easy to make an appointment online and the time slots were very convenient. The location is also super accessible by public transportation which is always a plus. My appointment was swift but thorough. I was given very clear follow up instructions as well as suggestions on which physician I should reach out to if I needed further help or had persistent symptoms. I was very fortunate to have seen Dr. Verceles, DO at an urgent care visit. He was so efficient and caring. After x-rays he suggested that I needed a total hip replacement surgery and referred me to Dr. Basil Alwattar of Cal Sports. I saw Dr. Verceles on 8/10. On 9/28 Dr. Altwattar performed the hip replacement surgery. After 3 weeks of in home physical therapy I went for my first outpatient PT appointment today. The whole process was the best thing that could have happened to me. I am sorry that Dr. Verceles will be leaving Carbon Health. Wherever he goes I am wishing him the best! read more

From my initial first phone call to them, to the great App they sent me to upload my registration info, to the nice woman at the front desk, to the NP who diagnosed my issue and promised to follow-up in two days; the entire experience was smooth and seamless and even pleasant considering I felt awful! Oh my! This place is the best. I was in and out within an hour. I suspected that I had strep but of course I am no doctor. I had to get a throat culture which I explained I am the worse. They said no problem we have an expert.. he came in and was done in seconds. Very detailed oriented. You are constantly told the exact wait times and what you are waiting for. I was truly disturbed and disheartened by my treatment at Carbon Health by PA Maisa Morrar. I had to literally BEG for pain medication to make it through the weekend. I was made to feel like a drug user even though it is quite easy for them to look up my previous prescriptions in the CURES system. They would have seen that I have had 1 narcotic prescription in the last year. I have been a Physician Assistant for 24 years and would never make a patient beg for pain relief. Especially a fellow colleague! I will never return back to Carbon health. read more

I wouldn't come here due to the fact that the company's billing department takes literal weeks to respond to email, and their billing phone line (that never seems to get answered) either disconnects or forces extremely long, silent waits. (It's impossible to tell which, but it DOES beep like an answering machine before going silent!) Their billing number is for another (perhaps owner) group, and forces you to use the automated triage system to tell them you're calling for Direct Urgent Care. Their business hours are 5AM to 5PM PST; how convenient for the average working American! If you call outside of business hours, it tells you they'll have modified hours for New Years, but IT'S JULY. If you call their Berkeley office and ask to be sent to billing through their automatic phone triage, the message just repeats; the forwarding system is broken. My favorite is that they sent me a bill to my address (with no explanation) 4 months later with a warning that they were going to charge my card on file with nearly $600, but I'm almost positive they did not properly resubmit the claim through my health care group as my insurance provider asked them to. Hard to verify though since I can't get ahold of a single person to help me! On a fairer note to the people at this location: the actual staff at the facility were kind and excellent, so if you are desperate enough to come here then you will be cared for well. In fact, calling the actual front desk was the only way I was able to get someone to even look at my account, though the front desk rep was only able to leave a note for billing to delay the charge for a month (bless their heart). We'll see if I need to get legally serious if I get charged tomorrow because billing ignored the popup note in their system. :] This review will be updated when I get some goshdarned closure on this nonsense. If I don't get closure, don't expect it to get any prettier. Additionally if the admin for the Yelp page comes in here and asks me to call the billing line or message billing@directurgentcare.com to get this fixed, I swear to god they're getting an earful. read more

I did not have a great experience, because the Medical Assistants (Mainly Dalena Nguyen) were inconsiderate and cold. I went here on Friday, I had 2 appointments scheduled 11:00 am and 11:30 am. I booked back to back appointments because I had 2 issues that needed to be resolved. The staff spoke with me, we came to an agreement to keep just the 11 am appointment. Day of I was running late, because a work meeting had lasted longer than expected. Surprisingly I arrived around 11:07 but had to go find parking, since this facility does not have its own parking like Kaiser or Sutter Health or the Planned Parenthood in El Cerrito. After parking and walking all the way to the facility it was 11:15. Waited four minutes to talk with the receptionist. She said they could not see me, because each appointment is allotted 30 minutes and they could not possibly go over that time. I came in for a procedure that takes up to 15 min max. The receptionist read from her script, and said there was nothing they could do. Which was a lie, as I have been to every Carbon Health center in San Francisco and am aware of how they move patients in and out. I spoke with a person who was the next level up, and she repeated the same script, but her attitude was definitely rude and she was not at all interested in what I had to say. Her name was DALENA Nguyen, she is a medical assistant. Dalena was rude and did not know how to communicate effectively to calm a frustrated patient. read more

Honestly, I've been here twice now and I've been super impressed with this place every time. I was able to make a same-day appointment each time and was seen within 15 mins of my appointment time. It's funny, when I came to this Urgent Care I was expecting long lines and tedious paper work with exorbitant prices for their services. What I ended up with? A short wait time, very professional & courteous service and a manageable bill. Their is a price sheet right at the check-in/out counter so there is full transparency of how much their services cost. I really like Direct Urgent Care. It's clean, everything is digital and efficient, the staff is professional, and it lacks the bureaucracy of a hospital. It's the perfect compromise between the physician's office and the hospital UC or ER; they have just enough services, such as an x-ray machine and strep testing, to handle most urgent situations. They are friendly and thorough, but there is no "lifestyle" questioning or pushing for wellness visits. I've been to DUC 7-8 times, and depending on the number of people present in the waiting room, I've been seen as soon as 10 minutes, or as long as 90 on a Friday night, but always the same day. Each time the medical concern was handled with thoroughness and professionalism, we were given several options of various levels of treatment, and they were very transparent and upfront about the costs involved. We had to go in for my then 10-year-olds broken finger and later for my then six-year-old's ear infection, and they were very capable with kids as well. read more

I have very mixed feelings about Carbon Health, but overall, my experience has been negative. The office environment itself is great - very good use of technology, being able to have the app on your phone and book an appointment - it is all excellent, and I think may actually make the service seem better than it actually is. For example, you can book an appointment and usually be seen within an hour or two, and not have to wait, and do it all from your phone. That is a definite improvement over an emergency room visit. The point of going to urgent care is to receive a diagnosis and get better. Carbon Health's service, unfortunately, has never made me get better from being sick. I have been three times. The first time I was given a rapid strep test, which came back positive, and then was given a standard 10 day course of penicillin. I took the full course of antibiotics, but the strep came back instantly, at which point the nurse practitioner TK Abraha (who I am not sure knows what he is doing) decided to give me the exact same antibiotic, but a larger dose. The penicillin did not work (presumably the strep bacteria became resistant) at which point I discontinued the use and recovered without using the antibiotics. The second time, I had typical viral symptoms, including fever, etc., and TK Abraha conducted a flu test, which came back negative. As an aside, I am lucky I have insurance, because without it, that negative flu test would have cost $250, with an outpatient cost of $200 (so total of $450 for no answers). Abraha prescribed a muscle relaxer, which made me feel nauseous and did not help the fever or sickness, and I again recovered without using anything. Finally, the third time, I went back feeling similar strep symptoms, and was prescribed the SAME antibiotics as I mentioned above. They again did nothing, at which point I went to a different urgent care, where the doctor found that I actually did not have strep, but tonsillitis brought on by a viral infection. Basically, Carbon Health never diagnosed my illness properly nor was able to treat it, and as a result, I do not recommend it to other people. read more

Don't go here for COVID testing! They may have more availability and can get you in sooner than other places (no one wants to go there), but you won't get your results in time, if ever. They send out the tests to an external lab for analysis, which supposedly takes 3-5 business days. I've never received my results. Compare this to other testing facilities where the turnaround time is 24-48 hours. They force you to give them credit card information upon check in, although the test is supposed to be free. If you refuse, they won't check you in. Also you are required to download and use their app to do virtual consultation with their doctor before the testing, "it's a required procedure because they are an urgent care center", and also to check your test results. I suspect, in the back, they are charging your insurance or primary health provider an obscene amount of money for all of this. Not worth the hassle and delayed results. Don't give them your business, even if your insurance is paying for it; rip off read more

Holy hell! What a nightmare. I made an appointment for my daughter who is visiting from the east coast and became ill. I suspected the flu. Was able to get a same-day appointment. But what even is the point of having an appointment if you don't get taken for a full 45 minutes after your appointment time?! It's now 3 HOURS since we walked in the door. Yes, that's right, 3 hours and we're still here. Waiting for lung x-ray results. Heaven forbid you need more than one diagnostic! It's like a 45-minute wait between each test. And no one here has any idea how long anything is going to take. They just tell you a bunch of BS to make you go away from the desk. No waiting room is comfy enough to make waiting 3 hours seem reasonable. And, really Carbon Health, it's a bad sign when people feel worse after visiting you. read more

My wife and I both have gone here a number of times with varying degrees of strength success. When they are good, they are great. When they are bad you will leave angry wishing you had gone to ER. I would say 60% of the time they have done great and 40% of the time they did not. By condition: we both had Pneumonia=excellent care. Once I had a Diverticulitis flare up= excellent care. Needed breathing treatment for asthma attack = meh not so great so. Had an infected cyst that needed care= terrible...they were not very kind and then sent me home with antibiotics and I was in the ER 2 days later needing to get it drained. The ER doctor said they absolutely needed to drain it immediately. My wife had the flu recently and got excellent care (although they were oddly rude that she was early for appointment). Today was not a good day and I imagine they will get a number of negative reviews because there were many unhappy people in there. Waited almost 2 hours AFTER my appointment time to be seen. She tried to say my appointment was 7:20 when it was 7 and I have the appointment reminder attached on my phone. Then she told me 3 hour wait and was asked if I could reschedule and come for a new appointment tomorrow morning? I said no, I left work early and I was in a lot of pain! That's why I made an appointment. Waiting to be seen the front desk person was cleaning around us which was very uncomfortable like she wanted us to leave. Just felt like a burden when I had made an appointment. Anyway 2 hours later they finally saw me. I was treated for Diverticulitis infection (even brought pictures from my colonoscopy showing Diverticuli) and was given a prescription for the antibiotics I needed but not for pain medicine. Diverticulitis is EXTREMELY painful and I have been given appropriate care at this clinic before so I am curious why not now? I asked clinician if she would give me something for the pain and she gave me 2 norco pills to take with me but no prescription. I know (from experience) the next 2-3 days until infection subsides will be excruciating and the pain will likely send me to the hospital. I left feeling like this was a waste of time, I was treated like a bother, and for how long I waited I should have gone to the ER if I wasn't going to be given proper care. Went in to get tested for Coronavirus. The staff was lovely, facility was clean, and the wait was not that bad for me and my mom; we walked in and only had to wait for an hour. Their app is very straight-forward in regards to setting up an account, scheduling an appointment, and having access to the information from our visit. My mom and I were able to go in the same room to be tested, and had a virtual meeting with a doctor in order to assess our need for testing. The test was not bad either (they swabbed the nose). I just left this place and received a refund on my way out. Awful. Simply awful. Do not give this clinic your business. This was my first time visiting. I made an appointment so I was expecting priority to walk-ins. Otherwise, what's the point of an appointment as an option? Issue 1: Although I made an appointment, I was not seen until 20 after. Issue 2: waited another 30 minutes after having blood pressure checked. I was told I would see a clinician named J...? 30 minutes passes by and a young lady walks in. Issue 3: the young lady doesn't apologize for the delay, only says that I owe $150 for x-rays and that the front desk person made a mistake. I explained that I believed my insurance covered x- rays. She quickly realized that she may have confused me with someone else and said she'd be back - and walked out. Issue 4: She came back in less than a minute later and admitted that I was right. I asked her when I could expect someone to drop in (it was 7:30p). She said claimed she didn't know and literally said "that's the way it is." I reminded her that I had a 6:40p appointment and was it possible that I could be there after closing. She answered with, "there are several people being seen and that they would get to me." I repeated, " but I have an appointment." She so "kindly" replied, "that's the way it is" and pretty much walked out. No apology for the wait, lack of understanding for appointments... I asked for my co-pay back and will not return. I can completely understand why this place has bad reviews. The staff appears young and inexperienced. They have a fake/friendly disposition as well. I did a cov 19 test a in 2020. I never got the result. Now my coworker decide to go to carbon even when I warned him. His friend recommend them the branch in Navato. He on his 5 day no results. I think it a scam. I just read an article on yahoo.com. The company preforming cov 19 test bought cars and fancy homes. Never gave test results. I think they trying to get insurance payout or the government reimbursement. It is so sad many people are dying. They try to steal people money. read more

The staff was friendly. I sought medical care because I got a splinter in my leg I was told it was 100 dollars for procedure and 195 for visit. I wanted to prevent an infection that is why I decided to go to an urgent care clinic, so provider saw me and after the visit he said he was able to get it out. I kept cleaning it but two days later it got worse really red, warm and pus. Almost a week later cleaning out the wound I pressed on it and saw something it was splinter measuring about one inch I was shocked and no wonder my leg felt worse. Worst experience ever! First I was able to make my son an appointment online a few days in advance. Kept getting great updates from the clinic on my email confirming my appointment. Then approximately 1 hour before the appointment it was suddenly cancelled with no reason given! I called and after multiple holds with multiple people finally reached someone who was willing to rebook our appointment. The reason it was cancelled was that people under 18 are not allowed to have primary care appointments and can only be seen in urgent care!! Ok fine! Once we showed up in person for new urgent care appointment, the receptionist told us we were booked for a "fake" appointment called "walk-in only". This is not a real appointment so never accept one of these! Then we were told that the wait for such an appointment was over an hour in a very full waiting room with many other sick people. This whole experience was terrible and ultimately ended up in delays on care for my son who needed a real appointment. What a terrible experience! This place has everything from the external appearances to be professional and efficient. But don't get fooled by appearances. The front desk assistants were too busy talking poorly about a patient and watching inappropriate Instagram stories to be professional or respectful. Not to mention how many HIPPA violations were committed. After a 1 hour 34 minutes wait, I was finally seen by a gum chomping, highly agitated nurse practitioner who couldn't be more unapologetic and knowledgeable. Run! Ok so I had an itch. Actually it was really bad itching all over my body (cool now everybody on yelp knows I'm disgusting and that I should go die) and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I went to SF General and after 2 hours of waiting around and jumping through various hoops I was booted because I didn't have insurance. :(:(:(:( Next day, someone more hip to the med game than me texted me the address of this joint Direct Urgent Care. Hopped a bus up telegraph and was looking for a hospital but where I hopped off there were just cafés and rando Berkeley shops. I walk in dreading how many millions of $ I was gonna have to drop just to get a diagnosis and a script for Tylenol. The place looked like a day spa. "Cool. This place is for rich N Berk therapists and professors. Not me, a broke student." I thought. A girl at the front was super welcoming and friendly (despite my obvious low self esteem day) and showed me the price list. -OMG A fucking menu- It was really easy to understand what I was gonna be in for. And it wasn't much. All I needed was a basic doc visit. $175 I can do. (Speeding up) Fifteen min later (occupied by paperwork -on a fucking iPad- -hella green- and the vitals checked by the nurse with the dope hairdo) the doc walks in and I'm pumped at how quickly this is going. All I say is "dude tell me it's not fucking scabies." He says "dude you got scabies." (My words not his) I asked him about some other shit that my friend in med school suggested I ask about and he was all like "dude your friend probs just read some obscure shit in a textbook and is diagnosing all her friends with stuff. Hyperblahblahblahnemiatitis is totes not what this is." (again, my words not his) So the guy knew his shit and he was like "bro don't trip, hella fools get scabies all the time even super clean people. Take this pill, put this lotion on and you'll be good." Not only did this dude know wtf was up, but his office was hella nice, and he made me feel less insecure about having SCABIES! I've been without health insurance for a hot minute but this is the most affordable quality healthcare I've ever witnessed. AND THEY USE IPADS FOR EVERYTHING! FUCK PAPER! I went to Direct Urgent Care for a UTI in December. Over the phone, they told me there was no wait, but I had to wait for an hour after I arrived. The nurse saw me for less than a minute during which she was very gruff and rude. The receptionist assured me that they'd seen students before, and the copay would only be $50, but after paying the co-pay they sent me a huge bill. Direct Urgent Care is listed as an in-network provider for my health insurance, Aetna Student Health, however Direct Urgent Care refused to file the claim under the correct tax ID code. Instead, they filled it under the ID for the nurse I saw, and my insurance will not cover the visit costing me hundreds of dollars. UPDATE: Although DUC was completely unhelpful and gave me the run around for a week over the phone, when one of their customer service reps saw this post he had DUC re-file the claim. Now, two months later, it appears as though my insurance will cover it. I am still giving DUC one star because the only thing they cared about was their rating on Yelp. They clearly did not care about me and everyone but the rep who saw this post treated me very poorly. read more

If Direct Urgent Care isn't running a scam, it certainly feels like one. They try to strong arm you into paying a "reduced" fee of $175 if you agree not to involve your insurance company. If you do want to run it through insurance, they claim they have no way to tell you what your visit will cost. How is that possible?
