I was waiting and the fruit and juice bar for assistance for a while. No one came and employees saw me but were sitting down. I am not sure if they were on a break or not but there was no sign and yet they saw me. I didn't know if it was an area I could go to them to ask for help so I just waited then eventually left. The cashier was rude. I asked her how she was and she ignored me and frowned. She handed me my receipt and didn't say anything. It was awkward and uncomfortable. I prefer the one in Cathedral City. At least there is a variety of items to choose from to eat. So that's a plus. The area looks nice and they do play good music like Selena. The salad and the fruit went bad. Did not taste good at all. The past few times I have been here it's been disappointing. The staff looks unmotivated and customer service is poor. They don't have any carts in the morning so how are we suppose to shop and get our groceries. Ruined by Amazon. Prices went up and now selling produce in plastic wrap. Shouldn't we be reducing plastics rather than using unnecessarily?! I didn't know why they started with the plastic until I saw that you can now order on Amazon. I guess I need to find a new store. I refuse to buy my produce packaged in plastic. The reason I WAS shopping at Cardenas in the first place was primarily the price of produce and they didn't package it. I prefer to be part of the solution not the problem. Today (11/26) I want to share the experience I had with the male worker at the hot food section who was clearly showing bias to the male customers. The issues include: 1: preference toward male customers by the male worker in the hot food section 2: limiting how much I could order of an item (16oz cup) only to watch the entire item (approx 32oz cup) being sold to the male customer behind me despite asking for the item before him. The situation. I went to the hot food section around 530-6pm to order the carnitas special and champurrado. I waited there with my friend while the one male employee helped the family in front of me for approx 10-15mins. I see the male worker talk and joke with the husband of the family before me and my friend I patiently waited my turn. After waiting for over 10 minutes I see others come after me also asking for champurrado from the male worker they joke with him and line up after me. I see the male worker warm up a fresh batch of champurrado and I get excited. He starts my order and he seems annoyed and irritated be me and paused as I also asked for champurrado in which he replied "you can only get a medium cup" I said "okay" and waited. He got my entire order together except for the champurrado. He then takes my order to the register and leaves me there and asked the other attendant to help the other people who were waiting after me only a few minutes- by this time I was waiting well over 20minutes to get my food and go. The woman takes the man's order behind me while I am waiting and I wait at the register for the male worker to come back and finish my order. The man who showed up in line behind me after waiting for over 10mins to get help, orders a huge cup of champurrado taking all that remained. After the woman helped the man behind me and the male worker shows up and tell her to finish my order. I tell her I am waiting for my champurrado , she said she gave all that remained to the man behind me approx 32oz. (Reminder I was told I could only get a medium cup). There was no reason why the male worker didn't finish my order. He knew I was waiting for it and he knew the male behind me was waiting to order the drink as well. I saw them talking and I think he delayed giving me my order to give the male behind me all that remained. There was no reason why he delayed my order and there was no reason why I was only "allowed" to order a medium sized drink while the male behind me ordered a huge cup approx 32oz of the drink. The male worker brought in the female worker to make it look like an accident but the way he was behaving looked like he wanted the other man to get it. I find how this male worker was acting was shady because he put the responsibility on the female worker who didn't know what was happening. The male worker conveniently stepped out so that the man behind me took all of it only to come back after it was already sold. I didn't get angry with the woman because she looked apologetic unaware of the situation and the male worker was conveniently busy helping other people. It was my first time at this store and I left feeling frustrated after waiting for over 20 minutes just to see the item I was looking forward to both be freshly prepared and completely sold to the male customer behind me in line. That male worker is shady and shows preferential treatment towards certain customers. read more

While visiting the valley years ago my GPS lead me to what it thought was an Albertson's. It was Cardena's and I was in heaven. For years we have traveled to Indio for a couple week stay in the winter. We always looked forward to shopping here. This last trip a few weeks ago left me in shock. What the heck has happened to my favorite store? We went in and it was dirty. The guy at the meat counter would not help me because he said "no ingles"....I was asking him a question in spanish for crap sakes. So disappointing. I don't know what happened but it is just a shame that this store has gone so far downhill since we were there last. Granted, we have not visited Indio since just prior to Covid because of the BS in California and this Covid thing but coming back to this was a big let down. What the heck happened to this store! This location USED to be a beautiful store. I say used to be because over the last 6 months this store has deteriorated to the point where we can't even trust eating the food from here. The store is no longer clean, no longer stocked, and the employees that are there are so rude and nasty. The new manager acts like she'd like to be anywhere but managing this Cardenas. The meat USED to look good! The deli counter back by produce is GONE! This is the island that used to have cremas, ceviche, cheese and salsa by the pound. GONE and an island with a stack of paper towels in it's place! The pan is all stale, moldy and the bins are no longer clean. Produce is beginning to change as well and I fear that will be bad soon. NO perano beans by the pound in the island by produce! NO canned tomatillos, just fresh ones that looked old and not all that great. Limited fresh tortillas where they usually have plenty of packages of the freshly made ones. About two weeks ago my brother and I got a burrito, and a couple of Carne Asada tacos from the self serve restaurant here. We ate it at one of their tables in the store and within two hours we both were sick with food poisoning. We had never gotten ill when it was under the old manager. I used to love coming here. BAD customer service here, no joke! Friday afternoon and 2 checkers!! Each line had over 9 people in line most of them with full baskets! Employees laughing and talking looking at the lines and finally one of the women in line said hey, don't you think you should open another check out stand! I asked the checker what had happened to the store and was told "I don't know! Nobody cares!" And she proceeded to giggle... sorry but I don't see what is so funny. Carnedas Market is an LA chain that I was unaware of until now. We found this place on accident when visiting in the area and needed to pick up some items for our carne asada fiesta dinner. I went straight to the bakery for dessert options and located a fruit tart. The fruit tart chosen was $9.99 and consisted of kiwi, large strawberries, pineapple, and peaches with a vanilla pudding filling. It was not like the fruit tarts that we get from Porto's Bakery, or even Assal's, or Whole Foods. The peaches and pineapple fruit seemed to be canned from conserve, and the strawberry and kiwi were the only items that seemed fresh. For the price, it was OK. The prices for a a fruit tart at other locations discussed would have ranged from $30.00 to $40 so, $9.99 is meh. Next time, Ill go for a tres leches and go from there. As far as the rest of the market, it was well organized and the prices were reasonable and fair compared to whole foods or trader joe's. A 3 star is the best I can give. read more

Very disappointed, stood in the hot and ready line to buy some of the advertised chicken special for about 10 minutes only to be told at by the cashier that they're out of chicken. Best part she tells me my co-worker said something some time ago. The sign advertising the chicken is also still sitting on the counter next to the cashier. I asked what do you have available instead? The cashier shrugged and said whatever I have here. Here by the way is a long hot counter that has different mix of foods that I haven't been paying attention to because I was caring for my 3 year instead of letting her run around unsupervised. I asked if more chicken would be made, nope we close in an hour the cashier. If you're sold out of the advertised product why leave the sign up tight next to the cashier/counter and only say something once? Why not take a moment and put up a sign saying we're sold out? This is the Whole Foods version of a Mexican market. Super nice, bright, and clean. The prices are very low in this grocery despite the enormity of this store. I particularly like the homemade tortilla factory, the hot foods area (for instant gratification), but they also offer a cheese counter and a bountiful butchershop, each manned (or "womanned") with staff. We have bought our Christmas tamales from Cardenas in Indio for our family for the last 5 years and have been very satisfied. I cannot imagine what went wrong, but the tamales for Christmas 2019 were atrocious. They were bland, dry and with very little (almost no) filling. We bought dozens of red pork, red meat and green chile with cheese and they were all awful. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers and we had no one volunteer to take some home. Quite a disappointment. And embarrassing that we brought these to the party. We won't be taking that chance again. By the way, pan sounded good to us, but we changed our minds after we saw all the flies inside the cases. What happened to you, Cardenas? We won't be back. read more

I usually go here to buy the cheese tamales and they are usually good. I went to buy them again along with rice and beans. The rice wasn't cooked through and was hard and the masa on the tamales tasted raw. It was awful, what a waste of time and money. The only edible thing I purchased were the beans, hence the 2 stars.
