They recently renovated this park and it has more of a cork feeling walkway instead of concrete. It's nice! Also has seating options. It's a relaxing place to sit, read, or eat.

The building was later repurposed as Detroit's first public high school before being destroyed by fire in 1893. The land was then converted into a public park, and it has remained a civic space ever since. The park has some trees (not very tall yet), tables and chairs with umbrellas, a historical marker and a statue of Michigan's first governor. It still has 7 pickle ball courts at this park, not too bad, but not as many as the main Pickleball court at Whittier. All pickleball players in the area know about it. There was pickup games that started before 3PM during the work week. My husband has been getting into this game of late. It takes some getting used to since it's not the same as tennis or badminton at all We got lucky and found one court, which I am told is quite rare. And we even found other beginners and were able to play one full game. We are learning baby steps, it's easier to get up to speed with this game as well. We were told by other more seasoned players that this park in the morning can be difficult to get on a court, as there are cliquish players that tend to hog the courts for the entire time they are there. No adherence or courtesy to other players that aren't part of this click. I didn't realize pickleball could get so contentious and cliquish either. It's for fun and getting a light workout, no?

The water fountain was being in full use. The park is spacious with a lot of well groomed lawn. The show itself was very entertaining. The park has a parking structure right next to it. The first two hours were free. I'm thinking it was 75 cents an hour after that but I'm not sure.

Although this park stirred up some controversy, mostly due to the cost of it as well as the slight…read moremovement of the original Veterans memorial with many of us local residents. The park is in place and turned out nicely. We now have lots of seating areas, metal orange chairs, concrete seats by the Chess tables and table tennis, some plastic low and laid back chairs closer to Troy as well as integrated wood seats here and there. As far as the seating goes, many if not most of the seating areas aren't super comfortable. The most comfortable spot I could find was just laying on the grass on the hill. The seating areas we still need to be a work in progress. The Hill is in the middle of the park and there's a nice spot to lay back and watch the crowds go by. It's also a nice play area for the kids and to have a little picnic. It is nice to see the Starr fountain back up and running, although it's been very periodic at best this summer. It is a welcome scene with the amount of people starting to utilize the park more and more each week and month. The only thing missing with this new Centennial Commons Park is any IG potential scenery. The old park by the Starr fountain at least had a lineup of trees directly to the fountain that made for a really great picturesque photo opportunity during the winter time. Now it's wide open space and not a lot of ties from one corner to the other.

It's called the Tunnel of Lights with food trucks and hot coco stand. They even have a few igloos and multiple fire pits to keep visitors toasty. I'm so impressed with SCS during this challenging time. Thank you for bringing smiles to so many people this holiday season.

I visit Brys Park to walk. There's a newer paved path that makes this easy. 1 loop around registers…read moreas a mile on my Fitbit. If you like to "wake up and walk" this is a great place to do it! Last year, they planted new trees and did some work to update the path. It was well worth it! There's even a new playground for kids. Watch out for the disc golfers. They usually pause & wait for you to walk by. There's also a dog park for SCS residents. Dogs are not allowed outside their gated area. If you go at the right time, you can see a beautiful view of the sun setting. It's a great spot to enjoy with your family or friends. All in all, it's a great park.

It's such a majestic fountain in a picturesque setting on the near-bottom tip of Belle Isle, but…read moreit's really the back story about its namesake that makes it intriguing. James Scott was not a founding father of Detroit but a gambler who frequently made politically incorrect comments and bequeathed $200K to have the fountain built in his honor with a life-size statue of him mounted on top. As it turned out, his likeness didn't make it in the fountain but rather inconspicuously on the perimeter probably to his eternal chagrin (photo: http://bit.ly/2G5vIYF). According to Wikipedia, he was described as a "vindictive, scurrilous misanthrope" who attempted to intimidate those he felt were out to get him and stooped to the lowest level to satisfy his need for power. First and foremost, something IMPORTANT - if you click on, "Get directions" while in the Yelp…read moreapplication, you will be sent to the wrong place by Google. I'm assuming someone must have done the "find my location" drill originally when determining the location, and the GPS satellite was a little off that day, because if you follow the directions given on your phone, you're going to end up someplace else besides the park. Where will you end up, exactly? You will end up in the middle of Interstate 94, about half a mile away from the dog park, and you will be going around 70 mph when your GPS announces, "You have arrived at your destination". I've done it twice with the same result, in the same spot on I-94. Put in "Statler-Maloof Dog Park, St. Clair Shores" in your GPS, or, if it can't find that, put in "Brys Park, St. Clair Shores" in your GPS (the dog park is within the boundaries of the larger Brys Park), and that should get you to the right place. It's pretty close to where Harper and 8-Mile Road intersect. That housekeeping item aside, this is a great dog park. Additionally, it's open to BOTH residents and non-residents of St. Clair Shores alike. But, don't even bother going there until you complete the application process first, because you and Taffy/Killer/Spot/Duke/Coco/Diablo/Zoe/Bear, etc., won't be getting in without the electronic passkey (it's a key fob, in this instance) that you get after you get through the membership application. You can get an application at the dog park, online, or, have one mailed to you if you call up the department that handles it at City Hall. Yes, it's a pain to fill out the application, get all the dog's paperwork, and then take those things to the St. Clair Shores City Hall, where, if everything's in order, and you give them some money, they conditionally approve you as a member. It's conditional because you also must return later for an "Etiquette" class (not the dog, just you), and then, and only then, your electronic key fob is activated, and you and your canine quadruped can get through the gates, and use the park. You know something? It is totally worth it. Good people there, good dogs there, it's all so very copasetic. Definitely recommend!
