I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.

Run from this company, do not walk...Run! If you care for your loved one at all and want the best…read morecare for them then I advise you search elsewhere for knowledgeable, friendly and helpful staff. The presentation of services to be rendered was completely misleading... overstated and vastly underdelivered. I was told the nurses were skilled and would understand the needs of my mother and right out of the gate the woman they sent was clueless. My 83 y/o mother had just received a hip replacement and we were looking for someone to help monitor her during a difficult phase of her recovery... basic stand and pivot to bedside commode... Turning in bed... monitoring blood pressures as she was, at the time, constantly fluxing with orthostatic hypotension. We were told the nursing staff was competent and would be able to do this and more, even light cleaning, meal preparation, full caring and respectful bed bath and some laundry service too! It sounded like a dream and too good to be true. It was exactly what I was looking for in terms of service and care for my mother. It was all a lie! First off, they were unable to find anyone for several days to come out and help. We even had someone sheduled and they didn't show up. When finally someone came, AN HOUR LATE, the woman literally huffed and rolled her eyes at me when I opened the door to let her in. She did not introduce herself in any way nor did she say two words as I led her downstairs to my mother's care area. She was very defiant, contentious and acted like she definitely did not want to be here! I was so uneasy and uncomfortable at the encounter I wanted her to leave then and there. I asked her if she knew of my mother's posterior hip precautions... no response! I asked if she was aware of how to do a stand and pivot and help mother out of the bed so as to avoid another hip dislocation, she looked at me like a deer in headlights. I then asked her if they had updated her on my mother's condition and the care needed... her only response was "yeah, they said she was real hands on." I proceeded to explain and instruct her as best I could. She then proceeded to sit in the chair across the room and watch the football game that my mother was watching at the time. I thought to myself "you've got to be kidding me! This is what you call a qualified caregiver and supportive palliative care!" She did not engage with my mother, speak to her nor even introduce her and give her name or offer to do anything other than, "you need me to fix her some food?", to which I responded, obviously no, I had already fixed her lunch in the hour I was waiting, which she was eating at the time of this woman's arrival. The whole experience was incredibly uncomfortable, but I had to go out and replenish supplies and groceries and other errands. I was so hesitant to leave but mother was having a really good day and was in bed watching the game, so I thought I could run out real quick and then just get back ASAP. I got as far as the parking lot of the store a few minutes away and immediately turned around and came back to dismiss the woman and figure out another solution. I called the oncall staff at Brightstar and explained the situation. They told me the woman had wanted to call out and not work that day so that was the excuse for the unprofessional behavior... I was thinking... why would you send that in the first place if that is the best you have... They tried to assure me that they did have really good qualified individuals and for me to give them another try the next day. They said this woman was no longer work with the company... Which I thought was strange to inform me of their employment decisions. They tried to convince me again to have them send another woman. I told them no... I would make other arrangements as they were obviously unable to deliver adequate staff to begin with. The woman was there all of 30 minutes. I dismissed her immediately upon my return home. Some time later I noticed I noticed an automatic debit from them to my bank account for $98. I disputed it. They were incredibly rude on the phone and very short with me stating it would be under review. I guess it's still under review because the charges were not reversed. Very unprofessional, very shady and very inappropriate business practices I advise anyone and everyone to look elsewhere!

Customer service does not compensate for lack of consistency of care for my loved ones. Smiling while lying to me about how well they would be able to take care of my family is a personal affront and disrespectful. So many better ways to get the same services from competitors. I expect them to close their doors and file for bankruptcy within a few years. They act like they have been given a box of snakes and a full time job. However, other companies have no problem with medical + non-medical staffing.

This failure represents a serious breach of duty and may have directly contributed to his death. 2. Lack of Proper Staff Direction and Oversight Based on my observations and interactions, staff appeared to lack proper direction, supervision, and adherence to appropriate medical response protocols. This created an environment where urgent medical needs were not handled appropriately. 3. Failure to Communicate with Family For four (4) days following my father's death, I was unable to speak with any responsible authority at the facility who could explain the events surrounding his passing. This lack of communication is unacceptable and demonstrates a failure in both professionalism and regulatory compliance. 4. Lack of Urgency, Concern, and Accountability There appeared to be no appropriate sense of urgency or concern for my father's condition, either before or after his death. Additionally, no clear explanation or accountability has been provided by the facility to date.

On or about October 30th, she walked in on her cell phone and said, "Oh good God," which was unprofessional and offensive. My mom has swallowing issues from her stroke, yet Joann tried to give her multiple pills at once and moved the cup toward her too fast. When I told her to stop, she snapped, "I've been a nurse over 20 years and I know what I'm doing," and then pushed my hand away as I tried to protect my mom. No nurse should ever push or touch a family member--completely unacceptable behavior. Overall, Sheltering Arms Rehab Center is very good, and the therapy team is excellent. Jonathan was outstanding with my mom's care. I truly hope Joann has been reprimanded and disciplined appropriately so this never happens to another family. Upon arrival, my father was not greeted or acknowledged. He was dropped off in his room in the wheelchair they brought him in with and left in his room for over an hour and a half without any staff checking in on him, or getting his vitals. The room itself was in unacceptable condition. The bed had no safety railings, which posed a serious fall risk. The lights were not within reach, making it impossible for him to turn them on or off without assistance. The air conditioning unit emitted a strong, greasy mechanical odor and failed to cool the room properly, making the environment uncomfortable and unpleasant. Needless to say, I removed him promptly from this situation knowing that he would not get the care he needed. There were 3 nurses at the desk as I pushed him in his wheelchair past them and still nothing was said. It was as if they were unaware there was a new admission to their wing. Finally, as I went out to get my car a nurse approached and asked if we were leaving. I let her know all the failures we had seen in that hour and half and we would not be back. This level of neglect and disregard for patient safety and comfort is unacceptable in any healthcare setting, especially one that is supposed to provide skilled nursing care. I would strongly caution others to thoroughly research and consider alternative facilities before entrusting their loved ones to this one.
