Ever since visiting Jamaica I have been on the search for really good delicious Jamaican food and ever since moving to Croydon I've realised that there are plenty of places here to try out. Caribsoul recently opened up right across the street from my local watering hole, The George and I was intrigued by it. It doesn't look like much but it boasts a few of the popular Caribbean fares: jerk pork, jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, curry goat etc. My boyfriend and I went out to eat it on a whim, excited by the possibility of having proper Caribbean food. The people working there were kind and informed us that they had just opened up two weeks prior (this was about two weeks ago) so we were some of their newest customers. We ordered our food, I had the Jerk Pork, my other half the Jerk Chicken (exciting I know) and decided to sit in and eat. The food came quickly partly because there weren't many people in there. From what I recall of the food it was pretty decent; very spicy as it should be. My pork was a little tough with quite a bit of fat around the edges an issue that I can easily overlook because many big restaurants do the same. The portions were immense for the roughly £8 I paid and there were several cuts of pork and my boyfriend got a few sizable pieces of chicken thigh. It was served with a heap of rice and peas and some coleslaw. Overall the way I feel about this place is undecided because I decided to visit so early in its business days. I really enjoyed my first visit and felt that this place had really good potential. Once it sees a bit more business they can really start taking off and producing even better meals but for now it's definitely in a good starting place and I would certainly go there again. read more

Carib Soul has some very cool features which make them stand out. When you first walk-in you are met with an expertly arranged selection of soul music from the 60's and 70's. As you're placing your order you experience Tony's charisma and positive energy. They have a good selection of Jamaican and American soul foods. Their food is prepared to perfection. I especially enjoyed the sweet potatoes, plaintain and jerk chicken. Their style of jerk is mild and moist, whereas in the USA (my home) spicy and dry is the norm. As a lover of food especially Carribbean I was eagerly awaiting my visit to Caribsoul on Saturday 23rd and boy was it an utter disappointment. Before I even ordered my food I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth, due to most of the menu being unavailable. Upon enquiring about the menu available online and the large soul food element we read about, we were informed they only do soul food on a Sunday!! I was beyond disappointed, as the main ethos of the restaurant is Caribbean and American Soul Food fusion, but this was NOT the case. I wanted to leave but thought maybe what they do have to offer would be worth the visit. So instead of leaving we decided to give it a go. We tried to order Escovitch Fish but was told they had sold out Friday afternoon, the day before!! You would think with it being a Bank Holiday weekend they would make sure they had enough of everything especially as they were only offering a quarter of their full menu! We ended up ordering a lamb pattie (no saltfish patties left!), curry goat and ackee and saltfish. Both came with rice and peas and a tiny side salad. To say we were disappointed is an understatement, the food was overheated, microwave fodder and you would do better to buy a frozen meal at the supermarket. They were overheating the food in the microwave so much, the rice was virtually crispy. The food was bland and the patti was brick like with overly thick pastry and who knows what inside as I couldn't work it out. We paid £10.95 for our mains not including the additional cost for coleslaw and plantain which were not included in the steap price. Unfortunately I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone but instead would tell you to avoid it at all costs and save your money. What a waste of time. read more

Was really looking forward to our meal here. It had a very nice vibe and we were greeted in a very friendly manner by a gent who said he is the owner. We waited over an hour for our food which we didn't mind as we assumed we were getting cooked fresh food. Unfortunately when the food arrived this was not the case. CaribSoul advertises itself as 'The NO.1 spot for Caribbean & Soul food'. Also you're paying restaurant prices, the least you expect is to be served edible food. *The rice and peas had clearly been reheated from being stuck in a bottom of a pot for however long they were extremely stale. *The festival was very uncooked. *The coleslaw was full of water *The macaroni cheese was actually dry Penne pasta with some melted cheese which looked like it had been overcooked in the microwave for as long as possible then served. We attempted to eat all the food except the mac & cheese. At no point did anyone come over to check everything was OK with our meal. We waited & waited still no one came over so we called over the man who had served us previously. In a very polite manner from ourselves we explained that part of the food wasn't edible. Anyone from looking at the food could straight away tell. We shouldn't of been put in this position in the first place as the food shouldn't of been served to us. The man got very angry within seconds of us explaining about the food. I then very politely said 'Please could we have a refund'. As we were made to pay upfront we had no choice but to ask. At this point the man who said he was the owner got extremely aggressive and verbally abusive to me. I am a young female, he was standing over my seat shouting at me because i very politely asked for a refund for our food which was way below standard. The situation escalated after his aggressive comments towards us & refusal to give any refund. He kept shouting that he is a qualified lawyer so he knows his rights not to refund us. A customer who witnessed the situation tried to speak to the apparent restaurant owner (i say apparent as i am only going off who the told me he was so cannot be factual on that) the customer asked the man to refund us as the food was not edible but he also got shouted at. I am very thankful to the kind people in the restaurant who comforted me after witnessing the food served and appalling treatment. I have never received this kind of treatment or verbal abuse from someone before, it was very upsetting to be treated to in such a way. I read from reviews others have unfortunately also been on the end of this awful treatment. The metropolitan police are now investigating the treatment and verbal abuse in which we received. read more

Went here on a limp, after shopping in Croydon and feeling hungry. The restaurant looked promising and the atmosphere was inviting. The menu looked professionally made and mouth watering. When entering I was asked if I was eating in or ordering take away. I replied with eating in and was told to sit anywhere I liked. After a good 20 minutes of waiting to be served I realised that I was responsible to get up and pick up the menu from the reception area and place my order there as well. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice plus a side of sweet potato fries. The order arrived fairly quickly, but that could be because it was almost closing time and there were barely any people there. Once I saw the fries they brought I was surprised. There were maybe 4 sweet potato fries in that bowl and the rest were normal fries. Mind you the sweet potato fries cost 3,95 and the normal fries cost 2,35 on the menu. And nowhere it was stated on the menu that if you order one type of fries that you get a mix of those two anyway. My Jerk Chicken arrived cold, was 90% bones and had a weird taste of cinnamon. The portions are quite big, but a big portion of $#*! is still $#*! I wouldn't go there ever again. If you live in South London there are plenty of better Caribbean restaurant options to choose from. read more

Great experience, good food, lively atmosphere, good.music. had then oxtail ooh it was suckulant dropping dropping off the bone springing salove enven before it touched my lips. Sereved with delicious flavourful rice and pease. I was tempted ro try a jamaicam rum punch but opted for the Guiness punch. I was not dissapointed. There is nothing quite like guiness. I dont know how to describe this guiness and condensed nu based drink. It probably a cocktail. Whatever this brown chacolate milk looking drink is. It look like bailys only much nicer. By far the worst experience I've had in a while. A friend and I went here for lunch today. We ordered goat curry with rice and peas but it was obvious that the rice was stale as it had a very bad smell before the plates had even touched the table. We notified the staff to let them know which was then followed up by the manager coming over clearly very angry. Before I was even given the chance to explain anything, he began to state that their rice is cooked fresh everyday and that it was impossible that our rice could be off. He then asked me whether I had ever tasted rice and peas before and that he was asking because I am from a foreign country (even though I am part Guyanese and part English) neither of which has anything to do with being able to identify stale food. He refused to smell our rice, continuously shouted and argued about being a Jamaican and therefore in a better position to determine whether his rice was off. My friend is half Antiguan and Nigerian and he did not ask her once where she's from and on pointing that out conceded to give us half of our money back before disappearing into the back of the restaurant avoiding all contact. All in all, the food was rubbish, his attitude was even worse and he's racist! read more

I work in the same vicinity of restaurant. It is poshly decorated for caribbean restaurant. In fact I walked passed it for about three weeks before noticing it was a caribbean restaurant. It looks like a crossover of Nandos and Preta mange. Anyway my girlfriend and I decided to try it out. The staff greeted us with a warm welcome. We could not help but acknowleding the vibrant music of Micheal Jackson and Bob Marley. IT was slightly louder than background music but not too loud that you cant talk.I had the curry goat with rice and peas and my girlfriend had jerk chicken with rice and peas. We both had red stripe beer. Both dishes were expertly presented, and was on our table within 8 minutes .The curry goat was very tasty, had a lot of flavour and a very soft chewy texture. The Jerk chicken had a great flavour and an impeccable taste. All in all we enjoyed the food and music and the friendliness of the staff. A great way to spend a Friday evening. We definitely will visit again and will recommend it our friends. read more
