Vegetarian review! My experience: I went in at 10:30 AM on a Saturday, mine was the only party in the restaurant for the first 45 minutes until a family came in. Drinks: 4/5 On Saturdays non alcoholic drinks are free if you come in before 12 PM so I got a pot of tea, an espresso, a latte, and an orange and pineapple juice. Disappointed that they didn't offer a chai tea latte or a macchiato. Appetizers: 5/5 Mac & Cheese Bites The Mac and Cheese bites were phenomenal, well spiced and seasoned and a good crunch on the fry. Trini Doubles A nice roti with very well seasoned curried chickpeas Entree: 4/5 Big Vegan Grill Down The mushroom and avocado were incredibly seasoned with a jerk marinade and seasoning, respectively. But the plantain could've been slightly riper and I was disappointed to see them use the same roti and curried chickpeas in the trini doubles and this entree, I was hoping for some diversity. Vegan Yardbird Lovely vegetarian take on this classic dish. I had never thought to combine jerk seasoned avocado with a sweet and savory dish like this, but it worked really well. The vegan yardbird alternative is quite believable, and has a nice taste and texture. But the watermelon was small and almost translucent, not a ripe or in season fruit. Pudding/Dessert: 4/5 The Chili Chocolate Brownie had a nice flavor, but was quite obviously vegan in that it quickly fell apart and lacked textural integrity, there was also very little if any of the chili spice flavor it speaks of. So so delicious! I met my girlfriend here (since she's so so lucky to live in London) and we had an amazing lunch. First things first, Brixton is an awesome neighborhood with so much culture & black people so as one can imagine there were many restaurants that cater to the Caribbean cuisine. I ordered the mango shrimp wrap with fries and my homegirl had chicken. The cocktails were 2 for 1 and very strong. The ambiance here was super colorful, vibrant and very spacious, including a full bar, art filled walls and Caribbean music. I can't wait to return!! read more

I visited Turtle Bay for a Caribbean Rum Masterclass. It was so much fun and so informative, it completely exceeded my expectations. In total we tried 8 different rums and our host, Sylvia provided some background and the story on the creation of each one. That really helps when remembering which rum you enjoyed the most! (My was Soggy Dollar!). I was really impressed with the knowledge of our host and you can tell there is real thought and planning that goes into making the tasting a great experience. We had the opportunity to try some sugar cane, which I'd never had before. I preferred to suck the sweet juice from it as chewing it made my teeth feel funny! Then we looked at the different ingredients that go into different rum and how it changes the flavour. We tried some chocolate before the rum and it completely changes the flavour. Considering it was a tasting, they were generous with the measurements. After the tastings we moved onto food, we were lucky in our group as the majority of us ordered different dishes so I got to see what the other dishes looked like. I had the macaroni cheese with jerk chicken, which was great. It wasn't too cheesy or oily like some can be and the chicken was a great addition. At first they forgot the chicken and the dish looked a little bare, but there was no problem with the waitress taking it back to the kitchen to double check and then it arrived with the chicken! Other people in my group had jerk salmon, fish & chips, goat hash and the burger. All of the dishes looked great. I also tried the vegan platter, which I preferred the look of, compared to the meat platter. It had plantain, which I love so I was always going to lean that way! It was delicious and jerk mushrooms and peppers and a chickpea dish which had a spicy kick to it! I would definitely recommend the vegan platter. The meat one did look great too but I'm calling it, the vegan one was the winner. While we ate there was live music playing, they currently have a Summer Sound Clash taking place among their different restaurants. It added a great vibe to the venue and people were up dancing and really enjoying it. I probably wouldn't visit when the music is playing if you're on a date, as you might not be able to chat easily. Go earlier to soak up the atmosphere, unless you don't want to talk to your date and then it's perfect!! The staff were all really friendly and couldn't do enough for us. So disappointed! Was her 3 years ago and left a 5 star review. This time it'll have to be only 1. Entirety due to the staff. They were extremely indifferent towards us. We were seated and got the menus. So far so good. Then we waited. And waited. After a long while one of the waitresses appeared to ask if anyone had taken our order yet. No one had, which we told her. She could've apologised for the wait, but nothing. She took our order including what we wanted to drink. Brought back the two beers we ordered and asked if we wanted glasses. Yes please. Then we waited about 10 min. while she folded napkins and chatted to the other waitresses. Eventually she came over to set the neighbour table and we reminded her of the glasses. Again, no apology but at least the glasses came promptly. After waiting a long time (20-30 min.) the food was finally served. Food was fine, but the whole experience was ruined because of the staff, who were busy chatting to each other and what appeared to be friends seated at the bar. We wanted to order some Additional side dishes, but since no one seemed to notice us, we gave up on that. After sitting quite a while one of them noticed us and our empty plates. Finally we got the check and payed. They were very quick to deliver the check and quite slow to bring back the change. We didn't leave a tip and I will certainly never return. It's freezing outside !!! Just got inside to this warm and snug Caribbean Bar. People dancing while they are eating and standing at the bar. Queue out the door, good job my cousin works here. Ordered a prawn and mango wrap came in about 5 minutes very tasty with sweeeeeet potato fries and homemade coleslaw. Plenty of taste and not too expensive either £7.00 for my meal. Fast service, good atmosphere and not too expensive what more can you ask for ?! Plenty of upbeat Caribbean tunes. Shaking ma booty as we speak! Alright let's cover the pros first. My sister and I stopped by Turtle Bay for some early evening Friday cocktails (you know the drill). Before 7pm and after 10pm, they do 2-for-1 which means two cocktails for an unbeatable price of £6.95. Can't say no to that. I loved the Carribean influence on the drinks menu. Lots of fresh banana, coconut and passion fruit flavored cocktails with rum taking centre stage. We got the Tease Me (fresh banana, coconut, Tia Maria and rum) and Vanilla and Passionfruit Mojito . The Tease Me was very tasty - almost like a alcoholic milkshake with the banana really coming through. The mojito was a good mojito but could barely taste the vanilla or passionfruit mostly as the fresh lime was too overpowering. As for the big negative? The bar service was appalling. We were seated right in front of the bartender waiting for him to finish up the cocktails for the previous customer. We even requested the drinks menu from him. He finishes up the order. He then proceeds to refill some liquor bottles. After which, he moves onto a new group of girls who have just arrived. After 15 minutes, it takes me waving madly at him to turn over to us and comment "I forgot you guys". Right. It was made quite clear this this one group was his priority. He chatted them up while preparing our cocktails, even poured out some of our cocktail from the glass into a small cup since one of the ladies wanted to know what it was and didn't even take the card machine back after I had paid. It was another bartender who finally noticed it left on the table for about 10 minutes who tore off my receipt for me. As though one poor bartender was not enough, at the peak of our frustration at not being served, another bartender approaches my sister and tells her she should smile more. When she responds that it has been a long day, he replies "Yes, but other people have worse problems". WHAT? Just no. You don't tell someone they have to smile more, and then invalidate their feelings without even knowing what they might have been through!! What a shame though. Good, affordable cocktails marred by the unprofessional bar staff. There are a lot more cocktails on that menu I would love to try but I am definitely going to be seeking out another Turtle Bay branch for that. read more

I really enjoyed my visit here on a Friday night. Atmosphere was fun and lively, cocktails were deliciously sweet. We all had a hot pot which on first appearance didn't seem like a lot of food but actually it was pretty filling - especially with our sides of sweet plantain and dumplings. The service was good in general however we ended up not getting two of our sides and our drinks took forever (they came half way through our meal) even though the bar staff didn't seem particularly busy. Our mains on the others and arrived within 10mins, which was pretty speedy considering it was packed. The food was tasty, although not the best Caribbean food we've had. I'd definitely recommend trying it out though! read more

I came here with a friend for lunch. There was a lunchtime special on where you got any dish from the lunchtime menu forn £6.95 so this was quote good. My friend ordered The street burger which she was happy with. My daughter had a burger from the kiddies menu, I asked for a hamburger but was brought a cheese burger - a little annoying when daughter has a dairy intollerance. This was however changed swiftly. In order the mango and shrimp wrap as pictured I have to say this was awful. The bread was soggy and it's almost like this was placed on the menu with no testing prior as to if these ingredients would work together. It was bland and my wrap was burnt! I told the staff u was unhappy and they did remove this from the bill with nonfuss whatsoever- so I have no complaint at that part. We ordered the Kola Colada as part of the happy hour 2 cocktails for 6.95 the drink was absolutely yummy, if it wasn't for the fact it was daytime and I has my little one, I definately would have ordered another 1... or 2 ;) The restaurant itself is nicely decorated I can see they were trying to give it a 'back home' type theme. The waiting staff were lovely, very attentive and polite without being intrusive. Overall - would I return, yes! However, I would definately not order the same thing. Great music and great drinks but the service was BEYOND slow. Waitress never came back and checked on us or offered us water. Yes. Yes. Yes. Come here. My spouse and I were wandering Brixton looking for a good chicken jerk place. I've been to a few of the smaller fast food places, but we were hoping to find something with more atmosphere. Turtle Bay is just the ticket. They have tasty drinks and everything we tried from the menu was fantastic. The hot pots! Yes. The samplers! Yes. We were there around 6pm on a weekday, so it was happy hour and barely anyone there. Downside: very slow service, not authentic-tasting Caribbean food and not "what it says on the tin" - one of the dishes I ordered (the dessert) was described as bread pudding and was in fact sponge cake. I've been to this chain previously, in Birmingham. I actually quite enjoyed the food, service and the atmosphere. Although I did mistake hot spicy sauce for sweet chilli sauce and ended up being sick and ... You can imagine the rest... For the rest of the night. Even though, I sort of have good experiences from this chain , the Brixton chain was a pretty poor and different experience. Firstly, the cocktails two for one... Ok brilliant - right up my street. However, I could hardly taste the alcohol . I only tasted ice and fruit juice. Not really worth it if you ask me. I'm no alcoholic - despite what other people think that is... But I want to TASTE the rum, I want it to make be feel something ya know???!! More like a mock tail! Also.... I was in a massive group of people, there were about 16 of us... So obviously the food isn't able to come out at the same time. But my food came out first and I waited for 20mins!!!!!! Until the rest of the food was ready. Good job mine had a lid over it obviously it would of gone cold. I just think it's poor service and not good enough!!!!!! Serves me for being pretty polite hey! Next rant....... You know what it was three stars but I've now changed it to two because the more I write the more it has annoyed me... So next rant.... It was my friends birthday.... We wanted to order an ice cream with a sparkler or something like that and we asked the waitress if this was possible her reply was .... WE DONT DO BIRTHDAYS..... I couldn't speak - my mouth dropped. Im only giving this place two stars because our hostess was very nice and the place itself was cool, other than that I would give them zero stars for the food. As a caribbean woman , I would say the food was definitely mediocre and im saying that to be nice . My husband and I ordered jerk chicken as well the jerk steak and the jerk lamb. The meat was not seasoned and simply drowned in jerk sauce . I was very much disappointed, if you are looking for authentic Jamaican food , this is not the place to go. read more

Meh. Nice layout and interiors and good service. Went there for lunch following a recommendation from a family member, but was pretty disappointed to be honest. Ordered the curry goat (listed on the menu as "Our Curry Goat") and I wasn't very impressed by the flavour or the shockingly tiny amount of actual meat that was swimming in the gravy. As for the flavour, I guess the technicality is that it says "our", so perhaps it was intended to taste so different. I didn't opt for dessert but my friend did - the rum cake - which looked like a super soft regular sponge cake that had a creamy rum liqueur poured over it (as opposed to being rum flavoured cake) and generic ice cream with it.... I hear that it's a busy, fun venue on a Saturday night - I can see how it would do well as a lively bar with food options, but sadly it didn't measure up at all as far as a quiet lunch was concerned. In the middle of Brixton with so much authentic competition nearby at a fraction of the price, I think they could do better with the menu. Apparently the Trinidad chicken curry is quite nice for those of a sweeter persuasion/palette. read more
