We attended the burial service for a loved one at Forest Park Southwest Cemetery in Richmond,…read moreTexas, a suburb west of Houston. The burial went smoothly and efficiently, and about as well as one could hope. From a guest perspective, everything appeared to be well organized. As soon as we drove onto the property, we were greeted by a Dignity Memorial employee who directed us where to park. The driveway goes in a big circle around the property and that's where all the cars parked, in tandem, one after another. The cemetery is big and it felt relatively "new" during our visit in that there was a lot of unused empty land without any graves. We parked on the north side of the property and walked south, past the central pond with three fountains, to get to our friend's final resting place. Final funeral services were performed under a canopy. After the service was over, all guests stepped away and watched as three Dignity Memorial employees performed the actual burial. This included breakdown of the canopy and casket-lowering equipment, placement of what appeared to be a concrete slab over the casket, and the dumping and shoveling of various types of soil and sand. Most of this required the use of heavy equipment. For example, at least three different vehicles were backed into the burial spot to aid the workers. It was rough to see our friend go out this way, but that's how burials go in my experience. Burials are not a sensitive or delicate matter. I've seen the same in Georgia -- the cemetery staff went about the burial in the same impersonal, routine manner. I understand they're just doing their jobs. On this particular day, the Dignity Memorial employees worked under the hot Texas sun when the temperature was in the mid 90s. I'm sure the heat index was right at or over 100. They were dressed in blue-collar workwear unlike the rest of us, who were formally dressed. After the service was over, my wife and I headed back to our car and prepared to return directly to the airport to return our car (rental) and board our flight. We were one of the last parties to leave the cemetery because I changed clothes and repacked some luggage. As I was finishing up, a Dignity Memorial employee drove up to us and told us they were doing another burial soon. She didn't want us to get stuck in the next wave of guests. I appreciated that. It was also a reminder of how much of a business the death care industry is.

We chose Earthman Funeral Home Baytown, TX on a recommendation of a friend. Although my fathers funeral was preplanned, we ran into obstacles from the beginning with the cemetary, as well as the military for planning the proper services for my dad. Mary Boudion, General Manager of Earthman Baytown was there and ready to help us figure things out. When the cemetary was not cooperative with us on a burial day, Mary stepped in and handled the cemetary staff both professionally and quickly to resolve the problem. When I was losing my cool, she calmed me down and assured me it would all be taken care of. Kendrick Herron, Funeral Director, was also very helpful in the planning of dads funeral. Kendrick took over handling the issues with the Military and helped us find all the information we needed and gave us direction on how to get what we need for Dad. Jim helped us on the day of burial, he was prompt, courteous, and handled all the graveside services professionally. The facilities at Earthman Baytown are clean, well decorated, and large enough to accommodate our needs. The dining area across from the chapel worked nicely during the visitation and allowed our family and friends to have a break with good catered food and a comfortable atmosphere to sit and reminisce about dad, while still being close to him.
