One of the highlights was getting to walk by the pits and chat with the staff. They even gave us a little tour and explained the smoking process. You can tell they take a lot of pride in what they do. We ordered the Large Family Pack for the group, which consists of 6 lbs of meat and 5 quarts of sides. We also added a beef rib to the order, and there was more than enough food for everyone. In fact, we still had leftovers. We tried the brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey, and jalapeno cheese sausage. For sides, mac & cheese, Mexican rice, potato salad, cream corn, and cole slaw. Everything was delicious, but my personal favorites were the cream corn and beef ribs. I've been to a few Terry Black's locations, but Lockhart is the one I'd gladly go back to again and again. We ordered drinks and dinner from the bar and waited for our food. The food and drink came out quickly and correctly. The food was great from burgers to fried chicken. The drinks also hit the spot. The band was setting up but we left during warm up as we had a long drive home. The bartenders were great at their job and the place had a honky tonk friendly feel. This is a must stop by place on the square in my opinion.

The sliced dill pickles were also excellent. Loved their potato salad which was creamy, just salty enough for our palate and had with a good balance of textures. The green spaghetti was a pleasant surprise too as the creamy poblano sauce had a hint of heat and could have been a meal in itself given how rich it tasted. As we sat down with one of the 4 pieces of butcher paper for 2 slices of meat, I noticed that there are no forks at Smitty's. Just knives. We got to work. The turkey was fantastic. Barbecue turkey is honestly an underrated concept and their turkey was juicy, soft, and would change any Thanksgiving meal to one for the history books. I was extremely disappointed in the slice of brisket though. It was extremely chewy like plastic. Decently seasoned but not tender at all. Probably a bit undercooked. It was worth visiting for the experience, especially to get a picture next to the fire pit, which one of the people on staff was nice enough to take for us. The brisket was tough and cutting it so thick made it a challenge to chew. The pork chop was a bit tough as well and lacked smoke flavor. For the price you pay there are other BBQ places with more tender meat, more smoke flavor, and better flavor. The Mac and cheese was overcooked. The sauerkraut was too sweet and they did not offer us any bread. This is my last visit.
