First priority my child was undoubtedly. What's so great about the Carle foundation Hospital there's multitudes of specializations within the foundation and top notch specialists that Is very well knowledgeable and adversed within their line of work is phenomenal. And I say that to say this, this type of compassion and commitment is not everywhere especially for Pediatric patients. My child and I were recently transported from Riverside Hospital to Carle Pediatric Intensive Care Unit due to no pediatric intensive care department within the facility of Riverside hospital. Transferred was an hour and a half way and it was a MUST and urgent care! . Due to weather changes and the winter's season, inevitable the viruses and FLU has knocked at our door once more. In the best care of Doctor Rosado and Doctor Tseng and their Amazing Staff. While my child had the best combinations of Pediatric care and Respiratory Therapy Medicine they both tackled the issue rather quickly and practically. Everyone single one of the staffing had compassion, kindness, supportiveness, tenderness and very thorough and knowledgeable of Asthmatic patients. They were understanding and treated my little one like their own. So much love was given to my little one. Carle Foundation even have a department called Child Life, which helped my child out emotionally by still being able to be in control of her situation and still being able to be a kid. She was able to still color, draw, legos, play room for the kids, puzzles, board games, play doh, books for reading just just to make a few things. Anything to keep her mind off of things and positive reinforcements. The ChildLife department was amazing shout out to Anna and Nikki!. We were definitely in the right place and right care! My family and I could not have done this without the loving family of Carle Foundation Hospital and we will forever be grateful. We stayed a long 5 days. With amazing Angels. I was seen in the ED for abdominal pain on 7/24/2026, after having CC refer me. After getting through the triage, I had blood work done per EMT. I then was given a bed against the wall in front of a busy Central Staffing area. Not only was this terrifying, but what about HIPPA laws? A FNP came and said "We are waiting for CT to come get you". I was not informed that this test had been ordered. I have PTSD, and the noise was "triggering me". I stopped a RN and told him that and he said, "I wish I could do something", but did nothing, and I continued to lay there without any help. (I was in the ED alone). Then when I was put into a room with two other patients, I was left with NO CALL BUTTON, No way to get assistance! The ONLY reason I came to the ED, was that I needed something for my severe nausea, and CC would not prescribe anything. I was finally given Zofran for my nausea after a while in the ED. I have been a long standing patient of Carle's and was extremely disheartened by the poor level of care all around me! This was not an isolated experience! Return to CARLE ED, only if absolutely left with no other options! I hope this review helps other to demand for proper care when seen in the ED. read more

Medical care blunder March 2024 Dr Rauther and the Boston scientific rep conducted a failed spinal stimulator surgery. Used extremely poor judgment after breaking the first stimulator off in my spine chose to place a second one without permission worst care and experience I have ever had. Has cause increased pain in the thoracic spine where it was broke off plus when they turned on the stimulator the broken piece was picking up signal and sending into undesired places. She even said what do I do now to the rep. This shows lack of experience and training for unplanned complications. Carle hospital and Dr rauther made me feel like all they cared about was getting paid for a failed surgery. If it could be zero it would. First they messed up a simple UTI and did not treat it and caused me to go septic. I was admitted and instead of listening to what I was saying they ignored everything that would have made my pain less and only focused on the only part of my body that wasn't hurting. I had never once said my pain was above my belly button and they only focused on my stomach. I was vomiting blood for 3 days straight and there was also blood in the stools. Clear signs of Crohn's disease but they refused to even entertain or rule it out as a possibility. My Aunt died of it and my Grandma is currently dying of it. Also the amount of physical harm they caused in the campaign to ignore and neglect a patient and what they were saying. I will never come back. I'll drive all the way to Peoria or immediately ask to be transferred out. I wouldn't let them treat my dog let along my children. Dr. Wilkinson (Gastro) and Dr. Kim (hospitalist) are absolutely horrible excuses for doctors. You're supposed to listen to your patients because they know their body best! They haven't made a single move to help manage my intolerable pain. Sending me home with nothing to ease the 10/10 pain I've had for over a week. And my follow up appointment they made is not until April. How do they expect me to function and raise 3 kids as a single mother? They almost killed me by sepsis and then medically neglected me for a week and a half. I will be speaking to a lawyer. The medication they are sending home with are for my stomach (for whatever reason because it was never the problem) all interacts violently with each other if you read the side effects so some of the problems I've had while admitted was probably because they can't read the fine print! I had an allergic reaction to a medicine and they told me it was anxiety. I have had anxiety since I was 12 yrs old and have never had an attack like that which was word for word of the side effects for the medication they gave me and are sending me home with! Law suit might happen in the near future for patient neglect. When every single nurse and tech tells you to leave and find another doctor or hospital that will listen and find a solution, you know you're messing up. When your own employees tell patients to get out and go somewhere else. I will say that Traveling nurse Ana and Tech Stacey and Julia were the absolute best part of my stay. Recently, I had heart surgery here. At first everyone was pleasant, helpful, etc. They even set a surgery date......which was cancelled the night before because the employees at the HVI neglected to call my insurance for approval (per my insurance company). That alone should have been a red flag, but I brushed it off, chugged along and setup another surgical date. I successfully was able to complete it on the 21st. I realize being understaffed is not the employees fault but in a 12 hour shift I was seen maybe twice. The real kicker is the fact that I was denied my first refill of pain medication after having open heart surgery. Reason? Apparently they took it upon themselves to schedule an impromptu and informal phone appointment in which I was not aware I had. I had no clue why this phone appointment was so important, since I've seen my home health nurse that day. So, because of this, I get the pleasure if suffering in pain because it's considered a no show so they didn't see me! Who is they though, because my actual surgeon and hcp certainly didn't have a say. it was this weekends on call provider, Oh, sorry I wasn't aware I was supposed to attend this phone meeting, especially when my day to be see is set solidly on Aug 7th. Very caring, clean, patient focused. Staff is just ok but my nutritionist is amazing.

I was seen at the emergency room for a breathing scare. My system was backed up and I got gerd like symptoms for the first time. This had my breathing feeling reslly off and like I couldn't breathe. I was seen by Dr. Kopec, who was completely unprofessional. He basically was cutting myself and my mom off, was mocking things I said like it was ridiculous and did not at all explain to me what was truly going on. Nor did he really care, it was blatantly obvious. He told me it was just gerd and made it seem like I was just overreacting. yeah well I saw a doctor two days after who actually told me what it was and it's known for the brain to go into panic mode because you feel like you can't breathe. Shortly after I noticed that my system had been backed up and I wasn't having bowel movements. I cured thag with over the counter laxative and my symptoms went away. Moral of the story I had something real going on, my system was off and not working properly, my breathing was off and weird, and I was treated like " just another" whatever Dr. Kopec was feeling that night. Well Carle asks for feedbwck but nothing probly gets done with it. So be aware if you go the ER ask for anyone but him and just know there is an good chance that other doctors there act like this. It's truly sad, I own my own company and treat all of my potential and current clients like family. When you become a doctor, you sign an oath to care for the public. This guy clearly brings judgment and his feeling into his work. I feel powerless. Im not going to threaten the guy or do anything weird while I'm in the doctors office, I'm not gonna sit there and push him to not treat me that way. I'm gonna go on with my life and do everything in my power to hold this guy accountable. We all want cared for in times of need, I truly like to be the one caring for people. If my body gave me no issues for the rest of my life, I would be happy. I don't want the medicine they give I don't believe in that shit. I just needed help one night and went to the only place I knew for it. Dr. Kopec, check yourself man, you never know, what your going to need help with one day. Carle deserves a -5. They have a nurse manager that feels the VA doesn't pay their fair share, when local veterans use Carle's services. She harassed the veteran clients, blocks them from leaving their room, and then tells a patient customer service rep she's their boss and they are not to speak with the veteran patient about their concerns. All because the veteran patient has an illness the nurse manager did not want to accommodate. An illness that is under the American disability act. I urge all military veterans to use OSF, as you are not welcome by Carle's management. It's a shame that military veterans are treated this way. read more

Son went to their urgent care (Conv Care Plus) three times with sore throat and not feeling well. They billed and received over $1,200 for the visits, about half from me and half from BCBS. Urgent care costs a fraction of this in Chicago suburbs, this seems to be taking advantage of college kids who walk in there not knowing better. Worse part is I paid their full balance in December 2022 (several months after the visits and all insurance payments) and then I receive for the first time a new bill in March, 7 months after the visits, for another $300+ for sames dates I thought I paid off. I thought it was a duplicate bill and they sent me to collections in April, one month after they issued the bill for the first time ever! My mother rallied yesterday, and made it clear that she wanted to live, so we decided to take her off comfort care while exploring options. The hospital had difficulty making the transition, which I partially understand, and now we're in limbo with Mom, and at odds with them. 1) Yesterday I talked with the surgeon about the possibility of a decompressive vent. That's a tube (peg or g-tube) that's used in palliative care. He said yes that could make sense but let's see if the obstruction resolves itself. This morning the hospitalist came in and explained in detail, with pictures, that no such procedure existed, that all tubes were feeding tubes. Shortly thereafter the palliative doctor came in and confirmed the procedure DOES exist. Has anybody ever read Kafka? This experience is the essence of Kafkaesque. Nothing makes sense. Cognitive dissonance. I had to write write my nurse sister who who sent me a medical article on the procedure, which helped me realize that I wasn't losing my mind. 2) We keep asking for a CT scan to see what kind of bowel obstruction she has. If it's oncological, it might make sense to to do palliative care, including a decompressive vent. If it's a kink or a big ball of poop, maybe not. We ask everybody who calls us for this scan. At first they said it they didn't want to do it it because her kidney functions are abnormal but they are not. (Moreover, they are doing a contrast scan on her back tonight, so not sure what the kidneys counts in one case but not in the other.) In the last few minutes, I got a call from a young women who was force to say wasn't "indicated," but couldn't say why. I felt sorry for her. She has a bad job. But here's the thing: If you had to decide whether or not to send your mother who wants to live to hospice, or a nursing home, or let her stay in the hospital, wouldn't you want to know whether or bowel obstruction is permanent, temporary, or recurring? Honestly, I had more thorough and compassionate medical care for my golden retriever. They keep saying "you keep changing your mind" but all we keep saying I "give us enough information to make a decision we can live with." If it's not "indicated" err on the side of goodness, rather than Medicare. They want us to leave, and we want to leave, but we want to know more. The most recent suggestion, which sounds like a compromise, is to move her to a "swing bed" in a small nearby hospital for rehab. Unfortunately, this afternoon her stomach started swelling up again, so I'm not sure what to do now. I'm sure they'll accuse me of "changing my mind." As this unfolds, I've begun to develop some advice for people who are facing end-of-life decisions for loved ones. The first is: be wealthy, and know at least one doctor who can help smooth your way. read more

This is probably the best hospital I've ever been to. The staff is always so friendly and helpful and I've been to several departments throughout this place. They communicate with their patients so well and answer all of your questions thoroughly. They don't make you feel like just another number, it actually feels like they are trying to help you for whatever you came in for. The wait time in the ER from start to finish is all really quick. I always feel taken care of whenever I leave here. Just make sure you go with insurance or a way to pay because it is really expensive but what hospital isn't Edit: This really only applies to day shift. Night shift is still nice and all but they're all interns/new so be prepared to get poked like a pincushion if you stay overnight. read more

Updated review to reflect how all other aspects of Carle remain unimproved through the years. The OB care is top notch and I'm satisfied with our longtime pediatrician. Everything else fails miserably. If you owe them any money (even a small amount!), they will badger you. They are on par with collection agencies in their rudeness and unprofessional demeanor. They will call you daily. If you don't answer, they will call multiple times a day. Get a primary care doctor, you will likely never see them. They will pass you off to a nurse. And don't miss an appointment, they'll send you a nasty letter for daring to waste their time. Nevermind they show up for appointments 20-30 minutes late on a regular basis. They will prescribe you medicine that has adverse side effects and not fully explain the severity and high frequency of occurrence. You can go in for chronic back pain and ask for a referral to a specialist and in that five minute visit they will prescribe you strong pain meds instead, after bending your legs a couple of times. I've never experienced something so ridiculous. The lab had to draw blood on my year old baby and the inexperienced tech stuck her several times and didn't get a vein. My baby was literally frantic and screaming to get away from her and I finally refused the blood draw. read more

The first is this, i had my son transferred to this place because it used to be a good hospital pre-2020. I will regret the decision for the rest of my life having my beloved son transferred to carle. They bullied me into signing a dnr first of all, even threatening me with some kind of a group of people to legally make that decision for me taking it out of my hands. Then I simply wanted the doctor to bring in a second opinion which he did... get this: The so called "second opinion doctor" came in the room didnt say hello, didn't say who he was... all he said with an ANGRY LOOK ON HIS FACE WAS ---- YOUR SON IS GOING TO DIE!@!!. He turned and walked away. The nurse was shocked and apologized to me profusely! The only thing that saved this guy from an (_v_) whooping was, My son! I didn't want to get kicked out of hospital when my son needed me most! not to mention my shock! This was in March of 2022. Jump forward to last night June 4th, 2022. My 72 year old father was brought by ambulance from an hour away... My 2nd-mother was behind ambulance and we had to stop and get gas so she got there 10 minutes before us. I arrived at hospital and put on my con-vid mask so I would be in compliance with these n a z i policies. The "follower" security guard asked who I was there for, I answered him politely. He instantly said his wife's name and said no more visitors. I said, Thats my father. He continued saying that only one visitor allowed no matter if they are dying or not and that we could not even take turns! After driving an hour, I didn't know if my dad was going to live or die! They WOULD NOT EVEN LET US TAKE TURNS! I politely asked why... he said "because of covid"! I said you mean con-vid... This place LOVES THEIR NEW found POWER!!!!! And until enough of us STAND-UP and SAY NOOOOOO... they will not loosen the noose, I am afraid. Bottom line is this.... "The doctor that came in to my sons room was pure EVIL! 0 compassion and does not deserve the title of doctor! The oath these people took is null and void with them. I would not send a stray dog to this place! It has turned into a very bad place within a few years. If you have the option, I would recommend opting out of this place. I took my wife in to a Dermatology appointment for a prescription renewal. Less than 10 minutes in the room with doctor. Didn't even look at her skin. Renewed prescription and it only cost me without insurance 515.00 dollars. 300.00 for use of their room and 215.00 for the doctor. Only 51.50 dollars a minute. Thanks Carle read more

But I was extremely sick and went to the ER and wasn't treated or checked on for hours. I respect and understand healthcare workers are busy, but I was the only person in the waiting room when I arrived, and I waited 4 hours. I pressed the button for help many times and heard the nurses talking to each other outside my door but no one helped. I'm seriously so frustrated with this place. This 2022 flu clinic was a disaster. yesterday my daughter and I waited for two hours in the car and had to leave. no one was managing traffic. People wet cutting in from side streets. We decided to come back at 3 since the clinic website said they would open until 4. We were turned away saying they needed to close early. Had to be admitted in June and have medical procedure. I was treated horribly by the interventional radiology department and GI department. We discussed the procedure and medical device that I needed and I consented to and which one which one I refused that actually made my condition worse. They lied and told me they were doing the one we agreed to and then did the one that actually would make me sicker but since they are so incompetent the device failed less than 48 hours after I was discharged. However since they are so incompetent and can't do a simple procedure right I'm not getting the medical care I need and my condition is deteriorating rapidly. I will never trust Carle Hospital with anything when it comes to my health for how badly I was treated, for lying to me and putting an inappropriate medical device in my body without my consent. I'm looking into taking action against this hospital and the providers involved. Stay away from this hospital! read more

Yikes. In July 2020, I was traveling to visit family, during which time I dealing with a surprise severe gynecological issue with lots of bleeding. We stopped at the ER at Carle instead of risking driving back to our home in Chicago. While the staff of the ER was nice, they only drew blood for labs that showed my hemoglobin was quite low (um yes, all the heavy bleeding) but didn't perform any other test or ultrasound, and sent me on my way with ibuprofen and ferrous sulfate supplements, saying that because uterine fibroids were already in my chart, it was probably just a heavy period. The next day when I was back in Chicago, I went to the ER again at Rush because the bleeding and pain was still so severe. An ultrasound in the Rush ER showed that a uterine fibriod had grown so large it was the size of my entire uterus. They admitted me to the hospital right away for a blood transfusion and surgery. Flash forward to bill time: my entire bill from Rush Hospital in Chicago (ER and 2 night hospital stay) was cheaper than Carle's ER bill, which was only about an hour stay where they only performed blood labs. So all right, maybe this speaks more to our lacking healthcare and health insurance systems writ large than the individual hospital, but still adds insult to injury. So I set up a payment plan with Carle to start to pay off my bill. After my debit card was replaced by my bank a few months ago, I called Carle to give them my new card information----two different times----because I noticed my payment plan was no longer auto-debiting. Each time the person on the phone said it was all updated. This month I noticed it is still not auto-debiting. I call Carle again today, only to be told my bill is now in Collections. Seriously Carle, this is extremely frustrating to be trying to pay off a big bill for an ER visit that didn't even help me in one of my scariest moments. read more

My son was hit by a car on September 16th 2022. He was rushed to Carle. The Critical Care Unit was absolutely the most amazing and kind people I have ever met. He was in a coma for 18 days. On day 18 he woke up. 2 days later he was alert enough to be transferred to the next level of care.That was the 8th floor. That's when stuff started getting ridiculous. There is only 1 visitor allowed at a time. That means that my husband and I, who just about lost our only child, can't be in there at the same time to help him heal. He is confused and agitated and wants both of his parents in there as much as possible. We couldn't have 2 people in there but he has to have an aide in there with him the whole time. I can't be in there with my family as a whole unit after life altering events but some rando gets to be in there?!?! So we raised a stink as much as we could and then all of a sudden they move him to the 9th floor, we assumed it was so we could both be with him. We were wrong. The nurse said that 1 of us had to leave because 1 visitor rule and that when we switched off it had to be out of the building!! We are on the 9th floor and the outside of the building is forever away! This is not how you should treat grieving parents of a coma and severe traumatic brain injured patient! Absolutely ridiculous. My husband is a wounded retired soldier with a brain injury of his own and they want to tell him medical information that BOTH of his parents should be privy to! My husband can't retain medical information like I can. Your hospital should really reevaluate this 1 visitor rule. Ridiculous! read more

Carle Hospital is only concerned about one thing Money. I booked a dermatalogy appointment at one of their outpatients clinic. Before booking, I asked how much would the visit cost. I have to self pay since I don't have insurance and not working now. The staff I spoke with on the phone informed me it would be 125.00 dollars. The visit was great. I had no problems with the staff at the clinic and the the Physician was very thorough. However, I got the bill and there is a separte 275.00 dollar charge for "Foundation Hospital Balance." This would have been nice if I was told about this before the visit. I would never agree to go if I had to pay a total of 400.00. I offered to pay 50.00 which is well above fifty percent of the Dr.s visit ,but they will settle only for the full price. Good job, start harassing me with a collection agency. Shame on you Carle. Taking advantage of an out of work patient for your "slush fund". Sure, why not charge almost three times the visit for your Foundation fund. No wonder this "non profit" was one of the hightest grossing hospitals in the nation. I will be sure to tell everyone I know to stay away. It's been many years since I've had to go to this hospital day after day. Currently they are taking exceptional care of my mother(who is paralyzed 50% of her body) the staff is amazing! They are really going above and beyond with taking care of her and making sure she is comfortable and has what she needs. The hospital is clean. Staff members are helpful with answering questions. Cafeteria has some good stuff and some blah stuff haha. But it's a cafeteria not a 5 star restaurant. read more

I had cancer treatment at Carle and I can not recommend them. The radiation department is very unorganized. My doctor (Barnett) didn't even show up for my exit exam. Billing is a total nightmare. It appears there is a group putting anything they want on a bill and then it is up to you to clear things up. It took me 5 days of phone calls to get a private room taken off my bill and it is still not completely done. The nurses and techs are great but once you go beyond them it is a mess. There are better options and you wont have to pay for parking like Carle charges. read more

A hospital that charges its customers with wrong costs in ER, especially with international students. Bad comment ever to this hospital. No help to health but eat your wallet. read more

The nursing staff is very kind. Always attentive. They made my daughters stay much more comfortable.

Given the size of the organization, five positive reviews are suspect. I have alot to say about this organization. But my last experience at the ER says it best. A staff member opened a gauze pad packet with her teeth, after taking blood. I was told she was in a hurry. My experience as a woman getting my car fixed has been more open than the billing process. There is room for improvment. Though I don't doubt this will be stonewalled. read more
