An absolute gem, a somewhat hidden, small winery that produces some very good wines. An acquaintance had recommended, and we are so glad to have discovered this special winery. We were met by Felix, the owner, and while sampling some excellent wines, he asked if we wanted to see him feed the sheep. What a treat! This is a small winery with low production but it's big on friendliness and great wines, and reasonably priced. We left feeling like we were friends and will be back for sure. I went to Carlo & Julian Winery today with a friend. I haven't been there since 2019. I liked this winery then and I love it now! 10 wonderful wines to taste and he just happened to have made a pulled pork and homemade chimichurri which was AMAZING both food and wine. If I had the money I would have come home with a variety case. Pricing of wines are extremely reasonable and the quality of the wines are amazing! I'm not a Pinot Noir person as a rule, but he had 3 that I could drink very happily. He also had the best, bar none, a GSM!!!! That did go home with me. The 2021 Merlot-Malbec was so delicious that it also came home with me. The Syrah and Melbec oh my! Seriously if you haven't been or it's been a while you need to go! SUCH a hidden gem in Oregon wine country! We had the BEST experience here. We met with the owner/winemaker, and he first gave us a tour of his gardens, and we got to pet his sheep! Then we went into this beautiful old building for the tasting; free of charge, and we must have tried 8-10 kinds of wine! AND we were the only people there, so it was a completely private experience. We aren't souvenir people, but we did buy a bottle of wine from this winery to commemorate our trip. I can't recommend this winery enough! read more

I have been coming to Carlo & Julian for more years than I can say. I was told about this place from another winery, they said: "If you really like Reds!! you need to go see Felix", the rest has been history. In all the years I have been coming I don't think I've had a really bad wine, some I have liked better than others but that is true at any winery. I love his Pinots, his Tempranillos are to die for and nice everyday wines are his Three Grapes and Six Grapes blends. Oh, I can't forget his Malbec and Nebbiolo are nice too. My friend & I have been coming down for the special Thanksgiving Weekend event in the area every year for quite some time and we always make a point of coming to visit Felix to taste & buy his amazing wines! The owner is amazing, his property perfect; he can as easily tell you about the chemistry of his process as recount ancient Roman history. The tasting room is in the barrel room on the actual winery premises. They make several types of wine including Pinot Noir of course, but also some varietals not always found in Willamette Valley: Tempernillo and a red blend of six grapes that can't even remember all of them--but it was delicious. The wines are very reasonably priced and no tasting fee. What?? We were even more surprised to learn they grow all their grapes on their small-sized vineyard right there in Carlton. We stopped by here after driving past the little sign many times before. This is a very special place and Felix, the owner and winemaker, is a kind, gentle, and very knowledgeable man. He allowed us to walk in his beautiful vineyard and poured us some of the best Oregon wines that we have ever tasted. Carlo & Julian is a refreshing alternative to some of the pretentious and corporate like atmospheres that you sometimes find now in Oregon. I had the opportunity to spend some time at Carlo & Julian working on the grape vines and trying some of their delicious wines! The winemaker, Felix, really knows his stuff having graduated from the highly-regarded wine program at UC Davis and planting all of his vines (situated on sprawling grounds not far behind the tasting room) some 20+ years ago! He has some lovely Pinot Noir of course (this being Oregon), but also some impressive iterations of Tempranillo, Nebbiolo (rarely grown outside of Italy), Albariño, and tasty red blends. Pro tip: ask about his Port-style dessert wine while you're there (delish!). Carlton in general is a great, low-key place to stop for some tasty food and high-quality wine tasting rooms, not to mention super friendly people! So you should definitely make Carlo & Julian & the town of Carlton a part of your next Oregon wine adventure! Cheers! read more
