Carmax is a joke. I recently brought one of my cars that I'm looking to sell to get appraised and they offered me thousands below the Kelley Blue Book price. They also came up with all of these phony things wrong with the car that don't exist. For example, frame damage. I did buy this car used and looked at the Carfax when I bought it 5 years ago. It had 1 owner and 1 minor accident before me. Not only that, I had it checked out by reputable shops for frame damage, and there was none. Carmax tried to pile on whatever they could to make it look like the value is lower than it really is so that they can screw you on the appraisal and then turn around and sell it for thousands more. Their cars are way overpriced. Compare a make of a car at that make's dealership with a certified used car to one at Carmax, and you'll realize that Carmax is overpriced. They try to dress up their dealership from the outside and make it look like a beautiful car mall, but once you get inside it's your typical used car dealership with quack car salesmen waiting to attack you at the door like the paparazzi. It took about 40 minutes to check out the car, and they stick you in a dirty waiting area with stained chairs that have never been cleaned and vending machines that only sell Aquafina water. Ew. I drink Evian or nothing. Also, they offer free Wi-Fi to their customers, but the catch is that it doesn't work because they didn't pay their bill. I wasted an hour out of my day and I could've been doing much better things with my time and I literally laughed at their offer and ripped it up as I was walking out and threw it in the trash can. I think Carmax is a fine place to buy a vehicle. I believe that they offer a broad selection of quality vehicles and that the buying process is easy and actually fun. I feel, though, that one pays about 5% to 10% more for these reasons. Now, I just purchased a 2010 Ford Ranger. (I bought a Buick Verano from them 5 years ago--a great car!) The Ranger is in very good condition; and I paid a premium for that. I believe it was worth the extra money. However, on the test drive the salesman and I noticed that the Cruise Control (or Speed Control as Ford describes it) did not work. So, I brought the vehicle back several weeks later for covered repairs. But before that, I noticed some problems after I got home. These included a leaking engine oil filter (split O-ring) and a leaking transmission out-put shaft seal--$22 total for new seal and filter. I did the repairs myself, because they are easy and I wanted to make sure that the seal repair was done right--especially, the cleaning, the application of Loctite, and the proper re-torquing of the bolts that join the rear drive-shaft yoke to the differential flange, and the polishing and oiling of the front slip-yoke. But why were these problems not caught by Carmax before I saw the Ranger? --After all, they are not exactly discount dealers; and they now charge an extra $299 on top of their no-haggle price. Am I happy? Yes! Could they have done a bit better? Yes! Finally, the salesman, Larry Wilhelm, and the service writer, Rodney Moreau, did a great job and they were very professional and pleasant. I went in to Carmax on December 23rd to finance a car, everything was unbelievably easy. I left the dealership with a manager saying everything looks great you've been approved with no problems at all. With that being said I was very excited about my car... Well a week and a half later I was called by the same manager and was told "hey unfortunately the bank isn't approving your loan anymore I need you to return the car if you can't find a bank to finance with". WHAT!!??? I'm so confused I went thru the entire employment and pay verification and I was fine now you're telling me to return a car and you're not even trying to help at all? Went into the carmax JUST to get my car appraise and there was an older Nissan o7 that was waiting with me the big black guy came to my car and a white older skinny guy went to the Nissan. The 2007 Nissan was don't in like 7-10 minutes tell me how he took 30 minutes on my car at first I didn't care but I was getting hit the black guy pulled the liner off my truck and said he wasn't able to put it back on (why tf did he take it off) didn't care cause maybe that's what u do but how tf u don't know how to put it on. There was a 2012 Cadillac SUV and a about 2017 Porsche Cayenne SUV. The same black guy checked both cars and they were WHITE men and they took under 5 minutes didn't take anything off nothing laughed with the Chyanne driver for a while saying how nice his car was! Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME IS IT CAUSE IM BLACK YOU HAVE TO TREAT ME IN THAT WAY. This is the first time I've ever been to a carmax never going back! If I could give a 0 star rating I would. We made an online appointment for Friday, April 6th for 1:00pm. We arrived on time. As we walked in ( I'm using my walker), my husband checked us in and asked for our appraiser. We are selling my car. We waited for over 20 minutes. My husband asked again and the person at the desk said our appraiser was not there yet. The appraiser finally arrived around 1:30. My husband asked if he needed the keys and he said no, just more info about the car. We waited again for 15 more minutes. My husband again went to the front and he gave the keys to our appraiser. He said he would be back with an appraisal in 30 mintues. It is now after 2:00. We waited again for 15 minutes. My husband again went to the front and found our appraiser talking and chatting with other employees and it appeared as if they were watching something on someone's phone. My husband approached our appraiser and he appeared as if he had forgotten that we were there. My husband was furious, plus I really needed to eat so I could take medications that were now past due. The appraisal was ridiculously low. NEVER, NEVER go there to sell your car. Get a better deal somewhere else!!!!!!! NOT GETTING MY BUSINESS! read more

Every time i bring it in they milk it for everything its worth. They fix one thing at a time to make you come back to pay the $100.00 warranty each visit. Also, when i bought the car, the headliner just starting to fall and they told me when it gets worse to bring it in and they will fix it since they are selling it to me like that. Now they will not honor what they said and want me to pay $250-300 to get it fixed. It took me a week and 1/2 to even get through to someone in the first place about the headliner, even after leaving multiple messages for someone to call me back. When I finally get through to someone they told me they would call me that day. He called me 2 days later and didn't even leave a message so when i called back the next day nobody knows whats going on. This would happen all of the sudden and then work fine for a day and then happen again any other time. Obviously some electrical problem. i took the car to be check to this service department before the 30 days warranty runs off. They only limited to turn the radio and wait if it happen again since it did not happen in front of them they did not bother to check any further. I bought a 2015 Camaro from Carmax on March 9th. I was not pleased with the customer service of Carmax. I came into view the car for the first time on Saturday, March 5th. My credit was blocked for security reasons and I told the sales representative Steve so. When Carmax ran my credit, they tried to offer me a 12% interest rate and I have GREAT credit, so obviously I declined their loan offer. I walked out and went to two different banks and got approved for their loans, both were under 2%. When I came back on Sunday, I requested my sales rep, Steve, from the day before. Steve NEVER came out to show the car to me. I had been there for about 20 minutes before I came back inside to get him, as if I was 'begging' him to sell me a car. He looked SHOCKED and even stated he was surprised I was back (as to infer I couldn't afford the car). After I got approved for the car through the bank and was approved for a substantial amount, then he was accommodating once again, as he once was before Carmax attempted to run my credit on Day 1. I owned a Lexus SUV previously (which by the way costed me less than a Chevy Camaro) and the customer service you receive at Lexus was TOP NOTCH not just sales but also for service and phone inquires, unlike Carmax, so apparently you DON'T get what you pay for! I wrote a less than good review on their survey and received a call from a sales manager , Bill. He did offer me a free car wash and one free gas up because on top of their poor customer service, the car had paper on the back floor-board of the car, and there was sticky residue on the passenger window from the sales sticker AFTER they claimed to have washed the car for sale. When I have reached out to Carmax a few times to discuss the issue (called on March 30th or 31st and also yesterday April 27th), all I have gotten was other people telling me that Bill was not in and that they would leave a message for him! Needless to say I would NOT recommend a friend or loved one to purchase from Carmax and I will NOT patronize this business again!! read more

I went in yesterday (12/22) to potentially sell my car. I made an appointment a few days in advance and showed up a little early to check in. I was greeted by a nice woman who immediately called over an associate (I think his name was Ash or Asher) to assist me. He was very polite; greeted us very warmly and offered us a seat. He asked what kind of car we were looking to sale and when I told him he went to edmunds to get an Idea of the price we would be offered. The problem is, he never inquired about what upgrades (nothing after market) my car had. I'm assuming these upgrades would affect the price offered. He assured me, without ever laying eyes on my car, that we would get the same offer from any other company. It felt like he didn't want to help us. I've sold cars at CarMax before and I never had an experience like this one. He never even attempted to look at the car. In my previous experience, the associate always looked at the car and made sure we left with an offer. Since the offer is good for 7 days, what harm would it do to appraise the car and give me some numbers to think about? Long story short, we ended up at Another dealer, who DID look at the car and take into account the upgrades in my model. We were offered thousands more for the car. I'm currently financing another car through CarMax, but once it's paid off, my business with this company is done. read more

My trucks fair market value is around $8k, fair trade in is around $5k. I was expecting carmax to come in around $5k witch I would have taken. I gave them a two star rating because they are generally nice people. However, the car I got was a disaster. I had to return it within two days because about 6 things needed to be changed. It was not a positive experience. I was disappointed with the experience. And upon returning the car, the gentlemen said: I'm sorry you had so many problems, but at least we took the car back". Although true, probably not the best thing to say to a customer. Honestly, I think the car was in an unreported accident. Too many issues for a car that had less than 30k miles on it. read more

Nothing is perfect but my experience with CarMax was very good. Everybody I encountered had a fantastic attitude and what seemed like a genuine desire to help and be of service. My sales consultant Frank Mazza was low key no pressure but at the same time answered all my questions and was very interested in selling me a car. After delivery I had a very minor problem requiring me to use the service department. Service advisors Geraldo and Happy were incredibly helpful in resolving the issue. Pricing and trade in value were fair. In a different situation I possibly could have done a little better. The lack of stress was well worth what this would have been. Again my compliments to the service department especially the two gentlemen I mentioned. The only issue was nobody answered the phone and my three voicemails were never returned. read more

Surprisingly they had a great selection of cars and trucks. My wife fell in love with a car and the salesman was so pleasant and eager to help, we told him we were pressed for time and the salesman made an appointment for us to come in at 10am but the day before the appointment he changed the time to 11am. I told him we needed to leave by 1pm because my wife needed to go to work and he said that wasn't a problem... IT WAS A PROBLEM, we didn't leave until 1:40pm and my wife was late for work. I should've bought the car elsewhere (lack of consideration). Then when we took delivery of the car, I noticed the low tire pressure light was on, the salesman said it should turn off, if not to call to setup an appointment to have it repaired. I called the service department to schedule an appointment and the employee in the service department was rude and said the earliest appointment was Sept. 2nd, THAT'S UNEXCEPTABLE!!! He then said he would take down my name and number and would call me back in 45 minutes, that was at 10am today, it is now 10:45pm and I still haven't received any phone calls. I bought a car from them almost a month ago, I haven't even made my first payment yet and after a week of driving, smoke started coming out of my air condition ventilation system. Naturally, like any other person would, brought back the car and they were happy to help and needed to "service" my car for 2 weeks, for god knows why. I got my car back only 2 days ago, only to see that there was still smoke coming out of my air vents! Horrible service. I can't believe I bought my car at this place.
