I came here ready to purchase one, and left in disappointment to the company itself for not letting me test drive a car I was ready to purchase. I usually own cars rather than lease them, so that means I've had a few experiences selling them when I want a change. Carmax is one of the tools I use as part of that sale process: the first step is getting appraisal here, then using that in a craigslist post as a "floor" to discourage buyers who aren't serious ("lowballers"). Carmax is usually lower than both KBB and Edmunds estimates though (and I'm talking about the "dealer trade in values" here, not the private sale or other metrics), which costs them a star, because they should be competitive with that very low bar. On my car the trade in should have been $19K, and they offered me $16K (they also overlooked that I had leather seats, calling them "leatherette"). But the thing that gets them down to 2/5 is the "no haggle prices" on the cars they are trying to SELL. I was looking for a 2015 Lexus NX 200t, and Carmax had one in California, and one at this dealership, both for $39,000. Both cars were a year old and had a year's worth of miles on them, so using the same guides they used to value my trade-in, both 200t cars should have been AT LEAST $5000 less. In fact, I could buy the exact same Lexus NEW, in a 2016 version, with ZERO miles, for $36K (negotiated down from just over $40K). So where does Carmax get off charging new car prices for a year-old, driven and used car that I can buy cheaper new? The sales rep I was dealing with flatly admitted that their pricing on this car was not competitive, so this review serves as a warning to potential car buyers: do your research! Don't just come here and fall in love with something and drive off in it, only to realize you've made a costly mistake. After a really bad accident where my car was totaled (and no, I was not at fault), I needed to find a replacement vehicle. I've always had new cars, but this time around I couldn't afford a new car price. Enter CarMax. I had several key features I wanted in my next vehicle (namely leather, a navigation system and XM radio), so I used CarMax's very handy website to search for cars that fit my criteria. I visited several stores, equipped with a list of each vehicle I wanted to test drive. At this location, I brought a friend of mine to check out three cars, and was helped by a very friendly salesman named Saffeek. We got along well, especially once we found out that he is a high school chemistry and math teacher (my friend and I met when we worked together as teachers... I'm no longer in the profession though). He was polite, helpful and patient with me. I ended up purchasing my car at a different CarMax location (closer to home), so I regretted that I could not help Saffeek earn a commission from the sale. But I would highly recommend working with him - he's knowledgeable, friendly, and I'm all about supporting a teacher! read more

The "receptionist" was not very engaging, but the first guy to sit me down should have been fired on the spot! Tried to tell me "how it was going to go," and told me to be prepared to be there at least 45 minutes. Had a VERY special and unique car to show. A 2014 Chrysler with genuine 6,000 miles! Rude man thew a magnetic cone on my car and scratched the paint. Truly the rudest man on earth and I have NO IDEA why Car Max would keep a guy who just permanently lost a customer, a customer who will ALWAYS talk about this horrid experience when I can. My experience went from great to worst, I purchased a 2014 xjl jaguar on Augest 8 2015 with 2049 miles ,upon my test drive the car failed with a dead battery two blocks from the dealer ship,so I really never got to drive the car on the highway,my salesman assured me that all problems would be addressed ,three days later I purchased the car for 64,000 cash, & proceeded out of town for three weeks, upon returning I noticed antifreeze so I took the car to alpine jaquar for work to be done under the warrenty,while there I asked about the shimmy vibration I had , told me that I would need a balancing & that carmax had the wrong weights on the tires, soon after I get a call for the service writer that I would require a road force balancing at an additional cost of $ 110.00 at this point I had no choice. The road force test came back with rr 45 lr 46. Rear tires Normal tolerance is nothing over 23 Fronts were lf 24 rf. 26 So they said you must go back to carmax as I did I seeked out the service manager Gerardo blandino ,I made an appointment for 8.15 am He never came out to greet me till 9.30 at this point I was boiling , I showed him the paperwork from jaguar that this car was out of tolerance , he told me that tires were not covered under the warranty, I explained I bought a certified car with 2049 miles on it , He said he would look into it ,with jaguar at alpine & perilli Long story short they will do nothing he said I bought a new car that should be driven more ,or pay for new tires on a new car I just bought. I have contacted my sales man & kassey at car max corporate. These people are really bad news once they have your money. I'm very disappointed I would never recommend this service manager. Carmax wants to be like carvana and vroom, but their fort laud store operates as if it's 1990. Their website touts ability to shop, schedule at home test drives and even start the buying process online. Umm...not so much. Found the exact car I wanted and reserved for at home test drive. Filled out all info online. But before they'd schedule, they had to speak with us. Fine. Yet it took multiple emails and calls (with several hours waiting for callbacks) just to get answers to very simple questions about the vehicle. Reps don't seem too responsive unless you're physically at the store. While I was waiting for them to get back to me, they released the hold I put on the car, selling it to someone else. Didn't even bother to VM or email me to let me know. Car still shows as reserved in acct - lol. I bought my last car at carvana and it was a far better experience....did it all online w/o a single phone call. Sadly, carvana didn't have the vehicle I'm now seeking. Carmax is fine if you're seeking a traditional "visit the lot, kick the tires, test drive with a talkative sales rep" experience. Awful experience!!!! I was in the market for another vehicle . Not sure of what kind but wanted to know the value of my car so I can look at my options. Went for an appraisal and the employee there accused me of coming from another dealership. He continued to say it and I finally asked why he would think that and how would that benefit me ? As he begun to give me a excuse that made absolutely NO sense he said the appraisal would take 30-45 mins and we could have a seat ..... well 15 mins later ... HMM... we got an appraisal FAR below any I'd ever expected. And coincidentally he ran outside (during a very bad rain storm ) minutes after he told us we could have a seat . So I kind of makes you wonder what was so urgent he had to run outside in the rain to tell the guy ... I would NEVER return here again ! When it came time for me to get a "new" used car, I turned to an expert to help me find exactly what I was looking for. He came back with two good options, one of which happened to be at CarMax. To be honest, I was super apprehensive. It seems like everyone I know who has gotten a car from CarMax has ended up with major problems and has spent more time at the mechanic than needed, but my expert assured me CarMax was decent, and of course he was there to give me advice. He headed over to the Davie location and organized the transfer of the car I wanted to see (it was in Fort Myers). When it arrived a few days later we went to go and see it and take it out for a test drive. Truthfully, without my "expert" alongside the visit wouldn't have been as great. He pushed for things I wouldn't have thought of, inspected the car himself, asked for us to go on a longer test drive etc, but the sales guy I worked with was receptive and it all went well. Since the warranty had just ended on the car a few months ago, I was advised to purchase the extended warranty from CarMax, but to utilize it at a Toyota dealership instead....It's great knowing that this warranty doesn't lock you in to CarMax's mechanics! I did end up purchasing the car and the warranty that day. John Ritter the salesman was great, but I was even more impressed with the girl who handled all the paperwork at the end. Only annoying thing was that I wasn't allowed to use a credit card for my purchase (I like my points!) and instead had to pay with a debit card...ugh. Again, this a car dealership, so definitely not a place I enjoy hanging out at, but overall it was a positive experience. Absolute HORRIBLE service! Would not recommend. Bought a vehicle on 02/12/22. Original paperwork was incorrect, had to return to sign documents (not a big deal really). However was promised an additional fob as they only had one for my vehicle. Well today is 05/11/22 and I am still waiting. Have called several times, been told it was on order. Told it was on order. Told oh we ordered two since it's been such an inconvenience...called two weeks ago and finally got a call back stating that they had changed computer systems and my order was "lost!" Drove it off lot as soon as it came in. Immediately noticed maintenance issues: -low air tire -pulling to right -brake squeaks -rear camera foggy Aside from the camera, all repairs were really maintenance. With this service hours of M-F, closing at 6pm it doesn't give someone to come and get the car repaired when needed. Had to reschedule a few times due to them telling me it would be 3 hours minimum to work on the car and they would not give a loaner. I have also purchased two other cars from here and have not learned my lesson about the service department. Super annoyed and disappointed. Purchase was painless. Service totally worthless. I bought out my lease. Was told by car max over and over again all I needed was my title in hand. Waited weeks for it to come in. Was in contact with them multiple times. Ready to hand over keys and they kept asking for more and more paperwork they had never asked for before. I gave them title, purchase agreement, paid in full letter. The works. Then they tell they won't take it until a full 30 days has passed since purchase. Excuse me? That should be the very first thing you tell a customer when they tell you they bought out their lease. Be very careful when shopping here. I was in the market for a vehicle they had listed. I went to test drive it and it all went well. It allegedly had a clean history per their AutoCheck or whatever product they use to show you the car's history. Before proceeding with the purchase, I ran a CarFax report and that's when I found out the car had front end damage that had not shown up on their report. When I brought this up to the nice salesman, he acted as if it was impossible. After they did some inspections, they "found out" that the car did in fact had work done but it actually seemed that they were fully aware of this but were trying to hide it. The salesman was actually nice to work with as he was not pushy and understanding but this steered me away from doing business at Carmax. This review is for selling my car. I sold my 2006 Escape (paid off) to Carmax. The process was fast, easy and I left with a check in hand. The process took about an hour and a half. I dealt with Davor who is a great guy and I recommend working with him. I contacted CarMax online to set an appointment. Drove in, met Davor, gave him my keys and waited for my appraisal. Got $100 less than Kelly Blue Book trade in value. Could I have gotten more selling private? Yes. Would I have to deal with flaky, shady people and upset to my schedule? Absolutely. This was easy, and I got what I expected. They give you a fair price for the hassles you save. Do your homework and be realistic. Oh and be sure you have a ride home, they don't have shuttle service. Well I have been attending Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey which seriously it should be a required course. I highly recommend it for everyone. First off, you can take the class just for the comedy. It is $99 and I can guarantee you that you will learn far more than you thought. You can google financial peace university and see where it is offered in your area. Whether you have debt or not, you will learn so many different things that make so much financial sense that you wish you knew sooner and will be invaluable. With that being said, I have been contemplating getting another vehicle and getting rid of mine before it hit 60K miles because I know at the 60K point when the warranty kicks out- the depreciation is high. So I strolled into Car Max waited about 30 minutes for a written appraisal. Having some background in the car business, I was not friendly with the sales man so after he saw I wasn't fallin for the tunnel, he left me alone in the waiting area of the lobby. The waiting area has a television and two drink snack vending machines ( even if one didn't work) and an ice cream machine. thought to myself if the offer is close I will sleep on it but I expected it to be ridiculous and that I would pass it off. It really exceeded my expectations, to be honest. I took it to AutoBuy 1500 Belvedere Rd West Palm Beach, FL 33406 www.wepaythemax.com in West Palm Beach who "pays the max" who told me that "carmax made an aggressive offer" and that I should consider taking it. Well here is what you don't know, I have background in cars myself and will probably re-attain my dealer's license in a few months. So I knew, that indeed it was an aggressive offer. I took the car back on the 7th day because you have 7 days to take the offer before the vehicle has to be re-evaluated and within about 60 minutes, it was bon-voyage to my truck. They called my back, got the pay off, and then I signed it over. Honestly, I am sure I will miss it a little but it is just a "thing and I know I am .not going to miss the payments for sure. I had about 2 minutes of sorrow and lots of joy!!! Thus, I would recommend just giving it a shot. You never know- if possibly you may be interested. I was pleasantly surprised! The AutoMax appraiser said that they may have a demand for selling those vehicles. Who knows but Bon Voyage - it's been real and points for Car Max! To get the 5 stars though, I would need to have gotten the vinegar and salt chips out of the vending machine that I wanted, plusher cozier furniture in the lounge, and a courtesy cup of coffee. I'm not the kind of person that likes to give out 5-stars. Not because businesses don't deserve them, but because when I do, I want it to mean something. Kirk at CarMax sold me a car long before I chose the one I wanted. Normally that would sound like a bad thing, but in this case, it was not. I've done business with other CarMax locations in the past, so I was familiar with the model. Even with a solid business model, a bad apple can ruin an experience. Kirk gave me a call shortly after I required a drive and before getting into anything about the car he asked questions about me. Not questions like "what's your credit score, are you paying cash, and what are you trading in." Instead they were strange questions like "what are you looking for in a car?" and "if you don't like this one, how fast do you want to buy? Would we have time to find something else?" and--this is the critical one--"did you have any questions for me?" On my first test drive, we got back to the lot. Kirk looked at me and said, "I'd ask what you think, but my guess is you don't like it." He was right. Nothing wrong with the car, I just didn't feel it. I was pretty disappointed. I had been researching for a long time and thought I knew what I wanted. So Kirk offered "can I have you look at a couple others?" My experience at other CarMax locations has been; the next 15 minutes are pointless wandering around the parking lot. Since I had 15 minutes to kill and Kirk had been so professional up to this point, I indulged him. He had a plan. (And if he didn't have a plan, boy did he fake it well.) We walked by three very specific options where he questioned and gauged me on each. We then went back inside and did some searching online. Arranged for another transfer, with him reminding me "if you don't like it, don't worry. Let's just see how this one goes." All of this is to say, the commercials and stories you hear about the CarMax difference were true in this situation. Kirk knocked it out of the park. He did guide me to a car; I would have never found on my own. I've been driving it for two months now and still really enjoy each time I get in. read more

I have to say that this was the best car buying experience that I have ever had. I found the car that I wanted on the CarMax website. It was in Atlanta. I called CarMax and spoke to Jeff Barrowman. He was very helpful. I paid to have it transferred to Davie FL. When the car arrived to Davie CarMax , I met Jeff looked at the car, took it for a ride while they were appraising my trade in. Very happy with the trade in appraisal. They offered $3000 for my 2003 Dodge Dakota pick up , which had 160,000 miles on it, a blown head gasket, a missing headliner and a cracked back window. The car that I was buying was a 2007 Dodge Magnum R/T fully loaded for $17,000 with about 38,000 miles on it. Brand new this car with all of it's features would have cost $35,000. I traded the Malibu for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee at Carmax Feb 21, 2018. Another great experience with one big exception. Carmax gave me $5,000 for the Malibu citing age and mileage. When I was in the process of turning in my leased Toyota and getting a new car, I went through about 1000 possibilities before making a decision. When I finally decided on a new Honda lease, the sales manager at Honda recommended I come here for my lease buyout since Carmax would give me a higher appraisal. Having positive equity on a leased car is rare and I was determined to get as much as I could for the down payment on my new car. I came in and had my car appraised on a Wednesday in about 30 minutes, quick and easy. I hung onto the offer (which I was happy with) while I continued to deal with Honda for my leasing process. While this was happening, the offer was "expiring". I went in on the day the offer was set to expire to sell with reluctance, since my new car was set to come in 2 days later. I was asking if they could extend the appraisal offer for 2 more days to meet me. I was told by three different people (the original sales woman, the appraiser, and a business office associate) that the offer would stay the same 99% of the time unless something major happened. An accident, rock hitting the windshield, driving 1000+ miles, etc. None of this was going to happen to me in the 2 days (and didn't) so I decided to take that chance since I needed a car to drive until the new one came in and was guaranteed. I came in on Friday (finally) to sell and had to be re-appraised since the other one had expired. I waited again while the team appraised the car. I see the paperwork when the guy comes in at a full $500 less than the original offer and my blood pressure went through the roof. I immediately started to lose it and asked to speak to one of the three people I had been dealing with before and refused to accept the lower offer, needing to know WHY. I was told by the senior buyer Andrew that apparently the first appraiser last week had failed to notice some of the frame repairs that had been made under the hood and now the second appraiser had, hence the lower offer. I informed him about the three people telling me about the 99% I was told and the fact that I was ON MY WAY to pick up my new car, and that I needed that $500 for the down payment, not knowing what I would do without it. It wasn't my fault that the first appraiser missed it. If I had sold the car on Wednesday, they would have given me the $12,500 appraisal no problem. If they're not training all their appraisers the same, not my fault. I had to crush some skulls to get it-but at the end of the day they honored the $12,500 appraisal rather than the $12,000 since it was their own error and nothing of my fault (I didn't damage the frame in the last 2 days). I then took the paperwork to the back office where I signed a few forms transferring the buyout of the lease to Carmax, gave them the keys, and got a check which I immediately deposited into my account to give to Honda. The whole sale process is very easy and quick if you're happy with the number they give you-I just had to fight to get what was rightfully mine which took longer. At the end of the day I am happy with the sale/transfer of my lease here. It was relatively easy once I got the number I wanted. However, if you are working with another dealer on a sale, don't come in for the appraisal until you're almost finished because letting the deal expire was more trouble than it was worth. read more

We located and had a Toyota Sienna shipped to Carmax, and asked Carmax to have it looked over thoroughly by their mechanics. We then test drove it and asked if our mechanic could inspect it (15 minutes away). Carmax said we had to buy it first. So we bought it, took it to our mechanic, who saw damage to the frame - it obviously had been hit in the side, which could cause problems with the automatic doors. We immediately returned the Sienna to Carmax, who disputed what a reputable mechanic said. Buyer beware. read more

In March 2020, I purchased a 2019 Mazda 3 Premium with just under 8K miles and I couldn't be happier. I begged a couple of Mazda dealers, even one that I have purchased two other new cars from, to just come close to the price, and there were crickets! Now I would have given 5 stars but I had to do my own close physical inspection to look for things that were missed even though their cars have to be thoroughly inspected by Carmax. The price was exactly the lowest KBB price for a non-certified dealer vehicle and 3K less than a certified one. With such low miles and a great one owner lease history, it was a steal. I did not have to negotiate and the vehicle was transferred to my local store for free. Don't mention the dealer fees because there were hardly any, only $399 and the rest was just the sales tax and mandatory fees and registration. You leave the lot with the actual license plate, no inflated costs for getting a new tag, just costs! If I am not buying a new car, I am definitely a lifetime shopper at Carmax for any future slightly used cars. read more

Unprofessional to the core.....My experience went from great to the worst, I purchased a Mercedes 2 weeks ago with 61 miles, upon my test drive the car had an engine noise among other things. My salesman assured me that all problems would be addressed, 3 days later I received a call from Jerry (from service department) asking me about the engine noise that he couldn't find anything. At this point I ask to speak with the service manager, Michael, he assures me the engine noise is nothing and that everything is ok with the car. I go ahead and purchase the car and when I go to pick it up the engine noise was still there, and the car was completely dirty! I should have never bought this car with the engine noise and the joke of the service presenting the car to me completely dirty. but you live and you learn... never again. anyways, When I ask Jerry why they wasted my time calling me that the car was ready when clearly the car was not ready. his answer was that the car had been clean and detailed. What an unprofessional and disrespectful answer either he was blind, or he didn't take his job seriously. Well let me be very clear he was not blind. now (2 weeks later after the purchase) I must make another appointment with them again because the engine noise is getting louder and worse and yesterday the car would not start. I am not looking forward to calling them because clearly their assurances mean nothing to them. This has been a very bad ongoing experience. If they don't fix this car as they assured me they would I will never come back to CarMax again. My advice: avoid this place at all cost. It is not worth it! read more

Worst car buying experience I have ever had. Deterred me from buying a car from CarMax A little background on my situation - I live in Chicago, IL and I was in Orlando, FL for work for helping out with the hurricane catastrophe. My flight to go back to Chicago is scheduled for 10/6 at 9am. I found a vehicle that I was interested in - a 2013 BMW X5 (Stock Number 15069465). I placed the vehicle on hold the evening of October 3rd, and promptly received a phone call from the Sales Consultant Muhammad Shaikh. I advised that I would be flying in at the evening of 10/5 solely to look at the vehicle. We discussed the logistics of how I would go about transferring the vehicle to Illinois, and he was nice enough to reach out to someone in the Tinley Park, IL branch to assist. This brings me to that evening - My flight left Orlando at 6:35pm and was scheduled to land at 7:35. It did not land until about 7:45pm and with traffic I arrived to the Davie location at about 8:40pm. I was greeted by a few consultants and told them that I had an 8pm appointment to view the X5. A gentleman started to assist me. This is where my experience went downhill: I told him that I was here to see the X5 and that I have flown specifically for that reason, and would be taking a bus back to Orlando tonight, and that if I liked what I saw, I would initiate a transfer to Illinois. The salesman took me to the vehicle, unlocked it, and literally gave me 5 minutes to view the vehicle. I looked at the driver's compartment (inspected the floors). Once I finished there, the salesman told me "You know what, can you do me a favor and just lock the doors when you are done here?" He motioned for me to push down on the lock cam on the door. I told him that would be fine. I went to the front passenger area and inspected the floors, once I finished there I told him that if he needs to go, I can lock the doors as he instructed. He said that I wouldn't be able to do that. I then proceeded to the rear passenger area where he said to me "Kenn we have to wrap this up, it's 9 already." He then proceeded to tell me that there is nobody allowed on the lot now. I asked him if I can just continue looking at the vehicle as a customer courtesy, since I flew here specifically to look at this vehicle. In a condescending manner, he told me that like myself, he has a boss to report to. Walking back to the office I asked him if they happen to have any of the service records on this vehicle, or if by any chance did they know where the vehicle came from, or did it just come from auction. In an annoyed manner he told me that everything is on the website and again, in a condescending manner asked me if I looked at the website. I responded by telling him that I saw the AutoCheck, but wanted to know if there were service records, he then told me that everything I wanted to know is on the vehicle's webpage. Back in the office at the stand-up kiosks he asked me if I knew the stock number. I told him no. He then proceeded with "How can you not know the stock number? I can't look up the vehicle without it." At this point, I'm furious at this situation so I'm frozen. To which he asks me "it's an X5 right?" I tell him yes and it was a 2013. I then proceeded to pull the stock number from an e-mail I had. He then was able to find the vehicle and points at the screen saying "See its on hold, I can't see it." I then tell him that I was the one that put the vehicle on hold online. He then shows me the AutoCheck and I tell him that I had already seen what is on the page, and was merely wondering if there were service records. He gives me a blank stare. He then asks me "So where do you want to go from here?" I tell him that I will be in touch with the Sales Consultant Moe. He tells me that he wishes that he can help me but he was already doing me a favor by staying late and pointed at his watch. I look at my iPhone and it was exactly 9:00. I turn around to look for the exit and turn around again to ask him if that is where I should exit through. He had already walked away. My biggest gripe here is that I feel completely disrespected by your Salesperson, and that my situation could not have been handled any more unprofessionally. Now I completely understand that you have business hours, and that you close at 9:00, but I have been to other dealers who have serviced me after closing time to ensure that my questions were answered. Never have I walked out of a dealer feeling as insulted as I did tonight. Also, knowing that I flew here specifically to look at that vehicle, I feel that I could have been shown much more courtesy from your Salesperson. My flight and car travel here took longer than expected. The person who "helped" me basically walked me around the vehicle and let me look inside for 5 minutes before telling me I need to finish up. I was not able to even start the car, look under the hood, or even open the trunk. read more

Under a year ago, I purchased a 3 year old BMW from CarMax with 27k mile on it. Since I own two cars, the BMW was only driven 7k miles. When it was time for an oil change, I took the car to the local shop and immediately they notice a slow leak in the oil pan. According to the shop manager, this was a slow leak that has been pending for awhile. It seems that CarMax overlooked this and sold me the car. When I bought the car to them, I was expecting them to stand by their cars and fixed the repair at little or no cost to me. To my surprise, the manager refused to discount the service and charged me the full price of the repair. Luckily for me I had an extended warranty. CarMax claims to test all of their cars with a 120 point inspection. If the car was properly inspected, the issue would have been fixed before the car was sold. I have owned many cars and you would never expect a newer model car to have an oil leak when it was only driven 7k. read more

We cannot believe how incredibly easy it was to sell our car. We received a better value at Carmax compared to what we would have received if we had sold it on our own to a private buyer.
