As the byline states: "At CarMax, we'll buy your car even if you don't buy ours". That's what I came here to do. And I'll let you all know right now....it is a grueling, drawn out process. My main complaint is that the expediency (not to mention the attention span) of the employees here are much to be desired. It took nearly 4 hours to sell my truck, which felt like 8 hours, but should have taken maybe 2 hours. Biggest reason for this: after the guy sat down and went over the specs, driving history and condition of my truck, he "forgot" to call me back for the final appraisal. He said he lost my number, which makes no sense seeing as how they enter it into a computer. But I digress. So anyway, there I sat like the impatient goober that I am in the lobby for what felt like an eternity. If I hadn't gotten up to bug the clerks again, I'd have probably sat there till closing time. I dispatch this caveat to you all to say: should you sell a car here, be sure to stay on top of them if it's been longer than an hour or so. It only takes 30 minutes max for them to conduct the inspection of the vehicle. The longest part was everything else; getting seen, running the appraisal and finally...cutting the check. True, they give you the money on the spot....after you've signed away what feels like your life via the 8 pages of contractual blah-blah-blah. Be sure to do your KBB research prior to coming here so you have at least some idea of how much payment to expect. 9 times out of 10, they WILL undercut the Blue Book price by at least a few hundred dollars. That said, CarMax is alright. They certainly beat out their competitors at webuycars.com. The latter claimed they could only offer up to $1000 for my truck. Obviously, I turned them down for a slightly better offer from CarMax. At least they were a lot closer to the KBB range. It was still low, but I felt I needed to accept what I could get at that point. Especially after already sacrificing 4+ hours of my life I'll never get back. A lot of you are probably wondering why I didn't just sell my truck privately. I'm gonna be honest with you: I didn't feel like dealing with the hassle. Too many risks for potentially getting ripped off, doxed, or a return from some angry buyer claiming the vehicle was worse off than it actually was. In short, I just wanted it done right and quickly. In the end, this is the place to go if you want to sell your old vehicle quickly and not get completely ripped off. Don't expect to make a fortune or anything, but....expect a somewhat decent price for not having to sell it privately. One day, I may return to one of these to buy my son an affordable car when the time comes. For now, I'm giving CarMax 3 lonely customers waiting a millennia in the lobby out of 5. read more

To be upfront, I have been a Carmax customer for several vehicles. This is the 2nd vehicle that I have purchased from the El Paso Carmax. The first one went smoothly. So early in May, I found a vehicle at the El Paso Carmax. I reserved this vehicle for a test drive. Shortly after, I was contacted by someone from Carmax and we discussed the new vehicle. During this time, I used the sell us your car deal from Carmax. I was given a very fair offer. Then I got repeated calls and texts from Carmax. It appeared that they were more concerned about getting my trade-in vehicle and not much else. Fast forward to test drive day. Keep in mind, that I had not even seen the new vehicle in person yet. I walked into the showroom and found that the person I was texting with and receiving phone calls from did not even work at this store. I was also told that I would be eligible for the "30-minute" express pickup. This, on a vehicle that I had not seen, nor test-drove! I was ushered to a salesperson who immediately wanted my keys and to take possession of my trade-in. I stated that I would like to see the vehicle I had reserved for a test drive. The salesman went to the back and returned and stated that the vehicle was being washed. Several minutes (15-20) go by and still no vehicle. During this time the salesperson wanted me to sign paperwork and give up possession of my vehicle. Finally, the new vehicle was ready. I took it for a drive and saw the fuel tank was sitting on empty. Not knowing the vehicle well, I cut the test drive short and returned to Carmax. I notified the salesperson that the tank was empty, and he acted as if I was not being truthful. I did purchase the new vehicle and I am happy with it. During this process, I was told that my current license plates would be transferred to the new vehicle. Note, I am a disabled vet and the State of Texas graciously allows a reduced vehicle registration fee. Carmax, however, does not. They charged me the whole amount for a plated transfer that is free. When questioned about this, I was told to go to the registration office and I would be refunded. Fast forward, the vehicle was purchased on May 11, and today is June 17. I had no registration. I call Carmax and was told, yes the plates are here. I went to CarMax and was given brand new plates- I asked about the transfer and was told, they rejected the DV plate application. It would have been nice to have a phone call, I could have completed the transfer myself. I also learned from the business office that the plates were ready for over a week! Come on Carmax! Erika the supervisor was absolutely horrendous to work with and had every reason under the sun to throw a wrench is selling a vehicle to them which had never happened in the past. She argued everything from requiring my companies registered agent to me having to add a middle initial to my title. AVOID AT ALL COST. Just purchased a car here today and the service was great. There were a few bumps but the sales rep Dominique and the sales manager Chris made it right. They really went above and beyond to fix what could have been a major problem. It's not if a company will make mistakes but what they do when it happens. No one is perfect but they made it right. We will definitely be buying cars here again. Update 2 hours later: Now the company is going back on what they said they were going to do to solve the problem. I didn't purchase a vehicle, I went in to look at their inventory and get my truck appraised. Aside from the offer they gave me, which I felt was low, the process is cool. The customer service is great. I worked with Ruby who was really nice and helped me out and answered any question I had. She was very knowledgable. I like that you can get a vehicle transferred for free from Tucson or Albuquerque, other locations are a small fee. Kind and willing to sell vehicles but complete incompetence when it comes to the service of vehicles. Less than a month after purchasing a vehicle, I received a check engine code and bad start up. I had to buy a new battery for the vehicle ( which apparently failed their comprehensive inspection). I was given a date of three weeks out to be able to bring it in to fix the issue, so I decided to buy the battery myself. After that, I then got another code which I took to them and again did not have another date available to service until three weeks out. They were able to send it out to a shop where they stated the problem was fixed and no more codes. I plugged in my scanner and was receiving the same error code as before. Shortly after, the check engine light came on. I called carmax and they informed me I could take the vehicle again to the same shop on my own time (for a quicker repair). After several hours, the same shop (MPG Automotive) advised they had fixed the bad sensor and everything was good and no more codes. I again plugged my scanner and still read the same code (P0140) and a check engine light came back. The shop then informed me to go to Carmax (after telling them what was the point of going back a third time after they had "fixed" the issue twice). Carmax informed me that I could take the vehicle to a Mazda dealership for diagnosing (in which they would "more than likely" approve the quote). I then went to Carmax and simply asked if they could provide me the "written details" in regards to the limited warranty as stated on the website. One would believe that I was asking a calculus question because it took 30 minutes before they could print and provide the written details to me. I was strung along and crossed the 30 days of purchase where I would be able to return the vehicle. I was naive and trusted the issues would be resolved in a timely manner and now I sit hoping they can fix the issues with the vehicle before the 90 days. They assured me they would fix the car but I was already told twice that the vehicle was good. This is the last vehicle I purchase from CarMax. It should be a red flag when there is no haggling on a used vehicle. A certified pre owned dealer would be a safer choice. read more

When contacted for the transfer fee it was as though I was in collections. Note, it was the first time I was contacted to provide payment. The perfect used car buying experience. It''s no wonder this company has taken over used car buying in the country. It's so easy. I recently purchased a car with them, and 90% of the labor was done online. I found a car I wanted in Albuquerque, and for free, Carmax shipped the car to El Paso, which took about a week. In the meantime, I knew I was going to buy, so had them process my financing, so I already knew my payment and interest rate ahead of the time. If you have mediocre credit, it's probably cheaper going with your own bank or local credit union since Carmax interest rates are pretty high up there. I got offered a low rate at exactly what my bank was offering so I just kept it easy and financed in house. When the car arrived I got a call and schedule an appointment for a test drive. Had I hated the car, I could have walked away and the only thing I'm out is the credit inquiry. Thankfully I enjoyed the car, and it was perfect for my needs. The only sort of "pressure" situation they put you through (since you don't negotiate price with Carmax), is they try and sell you on their "Maxcare" protection. I personally didn't feel it was worth it, and declined, and got the "I sell this to my family" routine, and when I declined again, that was the end of it. They didn't make me feel dumb for not wanting it either. From there, the business office has you sign the papers and there are no high pressure finance office add-ons that they try to put in at the last minute. You just sign the papers and you're out the door. From the time I walked in the door to when I was leaving, was just a hair over an hour, and that was with a test drive. The cherry on top is if you have doubts, you can return the car in 5 days with no questions asked and get your money back. You also get a 30 day warranty that is pretty extensive. Basically things no other used car dealer offers, even on CPO. Their pricing is in the medium to high end of KBB for these cars, but for the experience, it's definitely worth it. Usually car buying whether it's new luxury or old used can make you feel uncomfortable during the process, but at Carmax its straightforward with no games. It's perfect. read more

Why sell cars that aren't reliable to people and stick them with a huge bill and with the carmax care forget about it , your car will never get fixed . Spent hours/DAYS/ WEEKS at different places trying to get my car fixed and still ended up paying so much out of pocket even with the carmax care bs they try to pin you with. I paid for a car transfer and even before and after that visit, the only communication I've received has been initiated by me. Still no phone calls or updates. I agree with another reviewer if the car was already delivered, seriously how long does it take to "prepare" it?! And again, no phone calls or updates from anyone! Now, why don't they bring the car in and then charge the customer? Well because we'd get too frustrated and impatient and take our business elsewhere! This place is really frustrating. If I pay to have a car transferred here and it arrives early. Why still make a person wait 21 days to still get the vehicle?? I don't care to hear that it had to go through state inspections, quality inspections etc I honestly don't see it taking that long to do a state inspection. I paid my transfer fee on May 12th. My car arrived May 21st, but you mean to tell me I still have to wait until June 3rd to actually get it?? You can't even finish the purchasing process in the time frame that you are given to wait. Once the car is ready, THEN that's when I can come in and do the test drive and purchase the vehicle. That is not a easy car buying experience. So, now I have to have another appraisal from the first one I did on my other car. The lady stated to me that they get over 100 cars here a day etc. I don't care about that. This is the absolute worse car buying experience that I've ever dealt with. If I didn't already spend my money on the transfer fee. I would just go somewhere else considering that there is no refund. This is the second car that we bought from Carmax. first one 2012 Audi A3 clean title?? Full of over spray paint everywhere and lots of signs of body work. I didn't know until I take it to a mechanic and they let me know what he thinks it happens to the car. Second car that we bought recently march 16 2023 a 2018 Volvo xc90. First test drive my son 8 years old notice a wining noise on the pass side. it came out a really bad exhaust leak that it was burning the timing belt cavers. the truck staid there for a month. Same first drive test I reported a problem with the front brakes and a problem with the start stop system. Front rotors were replace. know I have a check engine light on and I was told not to drive long distances because something can happen to the car.so-tomorrow is my appointment. Check engine on star stop need service and praying that all this will be ta care tomorrow still not able to take a long trip cancel vacation and probably need and other appointment. I bought my car four months ago all of a sudden the tracking light has come on and now I called them and asked them if it was part of the sensor that was already messed up that they had to replace and they told me no they told me the car is not new it is new to me but it is not a new car so it's time it will have to have repairs. 1.) Purchased a vehicle from CarMax El Paso in October 2021.Part of the purchase process is Carmax filing for license plates and registration with DMV. The first temp tag expired and still no license plates or registration. 1.) Was told by business office I needed to provide "proof of residence" that they would then transmit to DMV which I provided December 13, 2021 on the same day Carmax replaced the brakes on the Car I bought (brakes went out within 90 days of purchase) I provided all that the business office requested - Carmax ElPaso then issued 2nd temp tag which expires 1-21-2021. 3.) Yesterday, 1-10-2021 i called Carmax ElPaso business office and was told that if i needed additional Temp Tag I would need to go to the DMV and pay the temp tag fee. Today is 1-11-2021 and received an email from CarMax business office telling me they require proof of insurance & proof of inspection (i bought the car from Carmax and Carmax claims "I have to provide state inspection" in order to process DMV paperwork. 4.) Since purchase of the vehicle I have called CarmaxElPaso on multiple occasions and each time was told a different story by a different person. I just called again today and after getting another dose of prevaricating and meaningless platitudes i asked to speak to a manager. (The General Manager was unavailable as was the salesman and i am informed Carmax Elpaso does not have an Assistant Manger, at all.) 5.) i requested to speak to someone other than the person who provided "abject apology" and meaningless platitudes, and finally after being on hold, spoke with a person who identified herself as Business office Manger named Devyn. 6.) After listening to her explanation that it was my fault that Carmax had not provided the correct documentation to DMV, and that it was my fault that "Late Fees" had accrued at DMV - that I WOULD need to again provide proof of insurance AND Provide state auto inspection to Carmax. 6.) I told her I did not believe her explanation and to stop her platitudinous apologies & wanted to speak to the general manger of the Carmax ElPaso. She said "he will not be back to work until Friday, (which contradicted what the other people in the business office had told me.) Devyn took great umbrage that I expressed my incredulity that and my disbelief of her explanations - huffily and in what sounded to me like false outrage, she stated she would now "end the call." 7.) So in addition to different stories, different demands, and repeated disavowals of responsibility for the last 3 months from just about everyone I've spoken to at Carmax ElPaso - I have now arrived at a point where i don't believe anything at all that they tell me. 8.) Not all is hopeless however -- the service department appears to be well managed and organized and they do have my appreciation for replacing the brakes on the car I bought from them - although it did take over a month waiting for a service appt. 9.) I could not get Devyn to agree that she would have the General Manger contact me - but with a disagreeable ending, she did claim she would have 'someone' contact me - I am not confident that even should 'someone' contact me, that an agreeable resolution will be forthcoming. 10.) I hope that my experience is not typical of doing business with Carmax ElPaso. Last word of caution - if you call their phone number and don't know the person or phone extension you need, then you get shunted to the National Phone Switchboard, located somewhere in Ohio or Indiana and good luck with getting satisfaction out of that. read more

Typical CarMax, which is a good thing. Clean facilities and friendly staff. Wide array of cars available here and through their national network. Ended up selling my car here, it was done within 1.5 hours, which is pretty quick for a car dealership. Why do people go to CarMax? Because they don't use the high pressure tactics a traditional dealership does. Do you end up paying a little more at CarMax? Possibly but not having to spend an entire day at the dealership waiting for the salesman to go back to his manager and then play the games with the finance guy is worth paying extra. This is the second time I have used Carmax. Last year I sold a car, got a decent offer. Hassle free. Last month I bought a 2017 Ram truck. Second my Tacoma to them again a decent offer within what Kelly Blue Book said my truck was worth. I shopped a long time for the truck price was right. I like their prices and process. Very easy. My sales Rep Fred Zeh was great. I even financed with them as they beat everyone in interest rate. My only disappointment was I wanted a radio with HD. They said it had it. Did not. Saw a truck online and wanted it took it for a test drive after I was prequalified. Any questions I had were answered I did t spend hours waiting for anything else to go through. I was in and out in no time. Literally the whole process took maybe 3 hours with out the test drives and looking at trucks. Got a 2018 low mileage and pretty much new condition. 40,000 dollar vehicle for a great deal on my monthly payments. Absolutely best customer service I had at a dealer by far.
