I have been in the automotive business for over 30 years and currently a sales and F&I trainer. I was in hopes that CarMax would live up to their moto of a different car buying experience. I was selling them a car and their appraisal process is far off the mark. They told me the car had been totally repainted and they can tell that by FEEL. I know the entire history of this car. NO repaint!!! Clean car fax!!! They are correct it is A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE..... a ripoff. Ask for the GM to call me and he did TWO WEEKS later after I contacted corporate. What a joke. read more

Prices were "okay" but definitely no great deals to be found. I purchased a 2015 Tahoe and the only reason I chose Carmax was because I couldn't find the same vehicle with the same mileage and options anywhere else (for any price). The price I received for my trade was bottom dollar but I chose to do it to avoid the hassle of selling it myself. The sales experience was painfully slow. I live an hour and a half away from the closest location so I made sure to have everything done prior to make the trip down. The car had been transferred from another location ($249 and 2 weeks later) and was waiting on me. I had an approval letter from Bank of America so all I needed to do was sign paperwork. Even with everything "ready" it still took almost three hours. All that said, I probably would have still given them 3-4 stars if it wasn't for what happened next. Two weeks after I got the car, I received a call from Bank of America saying they were not going to fund the loan because the paperwork had a mistake. (wrong APR) They told me that Carmax could fix the issue, resubmit the paperwork and all would be fine. Carmax, however, refused to do anything unless I was physically present with the car! I had to take another 4-5 hours of my time to drive back down to the dealership so they could fix the mistake that they made. To "compensate" me for the inconvenience, they washed the car and filled the tank. (It took me half of that "free" tank of gas to drive there and back.) All said, I don't believe I will be giving any more of my business to Carmax. The only reason I gave them two stars instead of one was because the people that work there are super nice. Bought an 05 f150 about 3 weeks ago, drove it for approximately 6 days, created a ticking noise in the motor as well as a vibration and what seemed to me as a transmission issue. Carmax has sent the truck to 2 different Ford dealers and still no time frame of when I will have it back. They will not work with me on getting me into another truck until the diagnosis is made (which I don't see how I should suffer). Won't be purchasing again in the future! read more

Carmax is all smoke and mirrors like Camping World and Real Estate agents. All kinds of help and support until you take delivery. Contractors everywhere for the short term and very few permanent employees who actually do all the paperwork and no one in management on site or not available. You will pay non-refundable shipping no matter what. Do not accept delivery as I did without a knowledgeable person checking the entire vehicle. I found that the trunk did not open, the E brake did not work at all so car rolled into busy intersection, gas cap was not tethered and fell into dirt when compartment door was open, and oil change light was on. I must drive four hours RT for repairs when local Chrysler Dealer is within ten minutes. Actually had my car for three days out of the three weeks since I bought it and do not expect to get it back anytime soon. Use your local car dealers where they have certified mechanics and employees, not contractors. read more

Chris Tumbleston was my representative from Carmax. He was wonderful! I never felt pressured or rushed. He took his time with me and was very couteous, patient, and helpful. Even though I had selected a car to be relocated to this dealership so I could tentatively buy it, it turned out I didn't care for it, so he happily let me test drive a few others. I originally thought I would be at Carmax not more than an hour but ended up taking 4 hours to make a decision and finally purchased a 2012 Honda Fit. He helped me figure out an appropriate extended warranty and explained everything in detail so that I was able to do my own math. Also, I was from out of state and the paperwork transfer was very clear, previse, and easy. They notified me when they sent it, and it arrived within two weeks so I was able to get my official plates and tags, all was in order. I traded in my 2003 Honda Hybrid towards the purchase. I would say, don't expect a high trade in value on an old car, you can most likely get much more for it by selling it independently, but ultimately, the convenience for me was worth it. I LOVE MY NEW CAR! I highly recommend this company, and many friends suggested them. I was originally loathing the idea of buying a new used car, but left pleasantly surprised. I purchased a 2016 Toyota RAV4 in April 2019. The day I bought it, the sales guy found that the child lock behind the drivers side wasn't working (the door wouldn't open because they couldn't deactivate the lock). He had the maintenance department look at it, and they said a part needed to be ordered. I had to schedule to come back in two weeks once the part arrived. I live an hour+ away, in Asheville, but I found time to come back for this repair. The drivers side front speaker also needed to be replaced, so that was another trip back. Fast forward to August 2019, and I had family in town. My sister-in-law was sitting in the back seat and found that when she put her window down, even a couple inches, her door automatically popped open (the same door that they "fixed"). Needless to say, this is quite a safety issue!!! I don't trust Carmax to fix anything, so I'll need to get it fixed elsewhere. I will say the sales process was fairly easy/smooth. It just seems they don't check everything as thoroughly as they claim to. read more

The experience at CarMax was extremely disappointing. I test drove a 2014 Escape Titanium on Thursday, and the very next day, my parents went to test drive it and were given another 2014 Ford Escape Titanium to drive. The fact that the sales representatives could not keep the two cars separated despite their differences in price and stock number was appalling. Not only that, but right before closing the deal, my Father found a defect in the tire on the vehicle that deemed the car unsafe to be driven. We would've driven that car off of the lot and been in jeopardy if he had not done a close inspection before purchasing. We were then guaranteed that the CarMax staff was going to get another tire from American Tire Distributors in by 5PM Friday and have the car ready to go. My mother writes all of the marketing for American Tire Distributors, and knows that they guarantee same day delivery, so was pretty disappointed that someone had dropped the ball. We got a call at 5:15 stating that no one had gone to get the tire, and they wouldn't have the car ready until Monday. We then returned to CarMax to speak to a manager who promised us he would fix the situation and put four relatively new tires on my vehicle to replace the defective tire and make sure that all four tires were of the same size, make, and quality. We left for two more hours, only to return to CarMax to see the vehicle on four tires in awful condition, that would have to be replaced in 2-4 months. It was then approximately 8:45 PM, with CarMax closing at 9PM. It was not until this time that we determined that this vehicle, which we had now wasted an entire day waiting for, was the vehicle that my parents had test driven, but NOT the vehicle that I had test driven just the day before. It was an awful experience and we will not be returning to CarMax. read more

Gene from carmax in Greenville was great to work with over the phone. I asked him to transfer a car from a nearby carmax in Gastonia and he got right on it and the car was moved in just a few days! He called me the day that it arrived and wanted to know when I could come see take a look at it. However, I found a car in my area that met my needs so I had to cancel my visit to the store. Gene was understanding of this and was not at all noticeably ticked off over the phone. Not only is everyone there extremely friendly but they sincerely want you to get the car thats best for you and fit YOUR needs, its pretty awesome and refreshing dealing with people that have your best interest at heary, and to let everyone know they do not get paid commision like all other dealerships, they all make the same amount whether you purchase a car from them or not. I recently bought a toyoya tundra , three weeks ago. It made a noise they assured me was tires. I brought it back 4 days later , with a report from my mechanic that the differential was bad. They wouldn't give me a loaner until they tore into it, so 2 days later , when they finally agreed the rear was bad ,I got a loaner. Fast forward 1 week 3days . I went to pick up the truck, got 2 miles down the road, and I start hearing a loud grinding sound....I immediately returned to carmax. After they looked at it while I was there, they said it wasn't fixed properly. Back in the loaner. Needless to say , this has been a headache from day one. I feel lied to, brushed off, and i don't understand why they even let this truck on the lot after their so called"8hr" inspection on each car. After looking into carmax online, (Google ) I saw that my experience was not a freak occurrence . One site logged 440 complaints for this type of thing at my Greenville location. Even reports from employees about unethical practices. And how their"thorough inspections" are little more than heavy cleaning at cleaning parties. They hope u believe the excuses they make about problems , like I was assured the grinding I heard was from a set of performance tires....which are known for being quiet. This is my second time using carmax, I didn't have an issue first time, that's y I returned. and this time The buying part was just as easy, and fast,stress free....it was everything after I took possession that caused my displeasure. Now that I have seen all of the complaints online, I feel like i got taken...maybe sold a lemon or God knows what. Its week 3....I should be enjoying my new to me tundra . Purchased extended warranty for my car. Air conditioning failed during warranty period and carmax refused to honor the warranty. Because they were unable to find the leak, they refused to handle this as a warranty claim. they charged me to add freon. I took the car to Whites Pine Street Exxon and they fixed the leak. read more

We took a 45 minute drive to CarMax in Greenville to have our car appraised and if the price was right to sell it.. At first everything was fairly straight forward. Their representative looked at the car, tagged it and took us to a small room where we were seated in front of a computer screen. he spent the next 30 minutes chatting with us and telling us " how important it is to get to know his customer" while scrolling through the CarMax Presentation . and trying to convince us that CarMax was super honest and fair and why we should buy our next car from them.. After almost an hour our car appraisal popped up on the screen. It showed that our 2009 GMC Arcadia was in excellent condition and desirable but then Ta Da ! They offered us $4,500 less than our dealers trade in offer and almost $7,000 les than the Kelly or Edmonds private sale value. We asked the salesman if he was serious and could this be a mistake.. He said that he would " Pass it on to management" but stayed in his chair staring at us. When that "Pass on" would happen remains a mystery. We told him that all that was accomplished was that we had wasted almost 3 hours of our day ( waiting and drive time ) and that CarMax had lost us as a customer for a purchase. His response was flat and he just got up , and handed us our keys. He did say he was sorry that our time was wasted. He was pleasant enough and I don't blame him. We shook hands and left.. My gut feeling is that CarMax is a giant hustle and no different than any large used car dealer. Which is after all what they are A USED CAR LOT... The one star is for the Service Department alone. CarMax makes the purchasing experience a breeze and the sales representative really pumps the value extended warranty. "Get it here, we stand behind what we sell and our extended warranty guarantees you that." Unfortunately, I have found out it is not that easy when dealing with their service department. It takes weeks to get a "drop off" appointment and their communication is below average for such a large company that brags about their customer first, ease of doing business with approach. I have had 2 of my vehicles fixed there. I now know of all of their staffing issues, over booking, sick personnel, etc because... why? These are my problems? After, one AC "fix" the car developed another issue with the AC system. I call in and the Service Writer tells me of all the problems their department is having like it's my problem that they can't fix my car correctly. Bottom Line: DO NOT BUY CARMAXs EXTENDED WARRANTY! Find one that is sold from the manufacturer of the vehicle you purchase. read more

I enjoyed my shopping experience at CarMax Greenville SC from start to finish. I needed a car urgently. I did not have time to haggle, negotiate, and run from dealer to dealer. I checked the CarMax website which is amazing. The website list every car according to many different search parameters. I limited my search to in-store stock, price, and mileage. I found several options. The website shows so many photos of each car that you can decide between leather and cloth, crank and automatic windows, etc. I decided on a car, was able to set-up a test drive online, and, when I arrived for my appointment the next day, my car was ready for me to drive. I tried a couple of other cars to test drive at the same time but finally settled on the car I had originally picked on the website. Don't be fooled they don't abide by their warranty!!! My brother was driving us to Atlanta to see my youngest brother who broke his neck out of town. His car broke down while we were on our way. They not only would not fix it, they wouldn't even give a rental car to us! We were stranded and unable to get to the hospital. Greenville carmax has "fixed" his car *three* times already for the EXACT same problem with a bandaid and never fixing the actual issue! now they are refusing to try at all and his car is stuck in Georgia! It wasn't the car or the price, but the "little" omission that the bottom line price did not include taxes, tags, etc. So we were on the last page of signing the deal when the business manager revealed this little $2000 tidbit. The salesperson knew we were from out of state but never mentioned this would be an issue while selling the car or the expensive $1900 extended warranty. It wasn't the car or the price but we wondered what else they failed to reveal. After we walked away you would think we would at least get a follow up phone call from someone to apologize for their little omission. Nope. I just purchased a Ford Escape from CarMax with Diego as my sales associate, with help from Kevin. They both were extremely helpful in finding the right car for me, especially Diego. After driving the car for a couple of weeks, I found I couldn't make sense of the car manual to set up my phone, understand the different features, etc. One trip to the service dept. was not enough. I returned and got an excellent tutorial from Justin, who has to be the most patient man around! All of the people at the service dept. have been great, but Justin was exceptional! After 45 minutes of explaining every feature, Justin was able to help me understand all I need to know, with the assurance that I can return if any more help is needed. This is my second car bought at CarMax and won't be my last. This place gives great service with no pressure to buy. And when you do buy your car, they are there for you in the future. I recently called CarMax in Greenville and spoke with a Janette. Spoke with her in detail about my 2008 Porsche Boxster Convertible Ltd with only 63,000 miles, triple black & in outstanding MINT condition thru-out! After a while, she informed me that CarMax uses "Edmunds"(to that moment, I had NEVER heard of the place) and the purchase price would be based basically on their value. Hung up, did some more research, found out that my Porsche would be worth.. according to this "Edmunds" between $21,138-$26,434.. so I thought, good & I called her back for an appmt. We had more convo about my Porsche and again she mentioned Edmunds and that I would probably get between $20-$21,000 which was ok because I was only looking for $22,500. I made the appmt, went in, sat down with her in an office while my Porsche was being appraised. AGAIN, she went into Edmunds and showed me about the value that my Porsche would bring, even tho she did say she was not the appraiser but based on her knowledge, that the $20-$21,000 would probably be the offer. After a lil, she went into CarMax in an area where the appraisal was finished. I WAS FLOORED!! It came in at LOW-BALL of ONLY $16,000. Appraiser came in and all of a sudden this Janette person AND the appraiser went at me ! Was told that my Porsche had "HIGH MILES" and because of that it wasn't worth much even tho both the appraiser and this Janette thought the vehicle was MINT!!! That after 60-65,000 miles Porsche's start to go bad, that the 3 motor top would probably go bad because of mileage and that would cost over $3,000, Then was told that engine problems would probably start soon because of mileage and that would cost me between $4-$5,000!!! They were absolutely relentless and had me convinced.. PRESSURED into believing that I best sell so it wouldn't cost me all this money for soon-to-be repairs! I fell for it ! I am as ANGRY as a beast towards this CarMax. I sent emails to corporate and called the store General Manager who has yet to reach out to me. I want that bank draft cancelled and I want MY Porsche back !!! Before turning in the vehicle, which I knew.. I shouldn't have but the PRESSURE so soooo heavy, I gave in, so I did not turn in the 2nd computer programed key, the cigarette lighter and the Porsche hydraulic jack. Was told by Melinda in the business office if they found things wrong that they would and have, cancelled payable bank drafts, which is why they don't pay on those payment bank drafts to protect themselves..for 3-5 business days. GOOD ! I did what I did to protect myself !!! So cancel that insulting offer, cancel that bank draft and have a talk with Janette and the appraiser for what they did and possibly update their training ! I have contacted an attorney for legal assistance to see what my legal rights are and how to proceed with this issue! Hopefully, CarMax will see the light and undue a very heavy wrong that they made ! read more
