The buying process was ok, but the service process after purchase has been horrible. I bought a vehicle back on Aug. 13 and there was a dent in the rear liftgate. Since I purchased on Sunday I was told to come back on Monday for a free repair of the dent. I called on Monday morning and was told the first available appointment was Wednesday (8/16). I dropped off the car on Wednesday but was never given a repair completion date. I called on Thursday and Friday and was told the car was in various stages of repair (i.e. dent removal, gone to body shop for painting, "in the oven"). Today, Monday, 8/21 I stop by on my way into work and the car still isn't ready. Moreover, I found out that the body shop hadn't even started working on it and I might not get the car until later this week. The car buy experience was ok, but I would not recommend using them for repair or purchasing an extended warranty from Carmax. I'm really surprised to see low reviews for this store. I had an awesome experience here. I sold my 2 year old car here and test drove one on the lot. I worked with Ashley G. at my first visit and she was just a dream to work with. Extremely knowledgeable, no pressure, and I really appreciated her follow-up phone call the next day. I wish all sales people were like her. It would be well worth your while to seek her out if you go here to buy or sell. I cannot say enough good things about her. We didn't end up buying a car here because we decided to get a new car. But I did sell my car here. Do I think I got top dollar? Not really. I got about 1k less than Kelley Blue Book appraised my car at dealer trade in-value. But the selling process was so easy that in the end it just didn't matter. We were out with a check in 25 minutes, and they handled all paperwork, even with the financing. Ivan worked with us and he was just as awesome as Ashley. Friendly, knowledgeable, patient. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this store. Don't do it! I took my 2012 Volkswagen Jetta in to sell because I am moving soon. The car was in very good condition and I anticipated a good price. I was literally shocked by CarMax's depressingly low offer. I drove away, posted the car for sale on Facebook Marketplace, and sold my car within five minutes of posting for 20% more than CarMax offered me. I could have sold it for 30% more. I have bought two cars through CarMax and may buy a third. I like the fact that I can search the whole country to get a very select package on a low mileage vehicle that can't be found locally. The two cars I bought through them were very, very sweet and my salesman (Leandro), this last time, was a pro. One thing I did not like is that I had a 10 year car that they only offered maybe 45% of its actual value. It was a terrible deal and I passed. As others have indicated, CarMax definitely low-balls the price. I did quite a bit of research on what my car was worth in the condition it was in, but realized what I was finding online was a general estimate and any offer would be subject to the vehicle being inspected by the buyer. I used Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds.com and NADA Guides. I took those estimates and subtracted about $500-600 to have an idea of what to expect to get. CarMax offered MUCH less than my estimate, and they do everything to assure you their offers are realistic and an accurate offer based on the value of your car. Not even close. That same day I took my car to a local office of WeBuyAnyCar.com, and they offered me exactly what I had estimated I could sell the car for. I had a range, and they came in $25 dollars above the lowest price I was willing to take. I sold it to them on the spot, and got a check before I left their office. Their offer was well over $500 more than CarMax had offered. I would highly recommend you shop it around to other buyers such as WeBuyAnyCar.com or AutoTraders.com. Don't only use CarMax or think they are the only "game in town". I was glad I looked elsewhere. read more

I honestly cannot believe I had the experience I did here. I can tell you one thing, you won't catch me here ever again. I came to CarMax to potentially trade & buy a car. I got there Tuesday around 7:00PM. I had to get an appraisal for my car since I still owed, fine whatever. My bank was closed so they told me to come back on Wednesday and it'll be done. Wednesday rolls around and guess what? NO ONE CALLED MY BANK!! IT SAT THERE FOR A WHOLE 24 HOURS WITHOUT IT GETTING DONE!!! They didn't know what/how it happened. The manager promised me it would be done Thursday morning. I did get a call Thursday morning saying it was done. That was TWO strikes already! I had a great experience at Car Max. I unfortunately had the car I loved totaled in an accident and was not looking forward to purchasing another car when a friend of mind recommended Car Max. I looked online for a car that I was interested in and selected the car. Within an hour I was contacted by Matt, Dulles CarMax representative, he walked me through the process, including finance, by the time I arrived at the Dulles location completed a test drive , looked over the car and sat down with the business staff filled out the paperwork and I was on my way. I went to this place today to get a value on my car and this associate name Basir helped me and my husband out. I came here with no makeup on my face and at one point I left my husband with the employee while I go to the restroom to apply some makeup on my face because I was going to work afterwards. Once I come back from the restroom and walk back to sit with my husband and Basir. Basir, mentions the acne on my face and told me how his wife has acne and that he will give me the name of the medication she uses. I came here to bring my car to get some input and instead you tell me about my acne. This is wrong because usually people are very insecure about their acne and you don't know how people get it whether it is from something depressing they've gone through, and they are breaking out due to that stress. This is beyond offensive and it was hurtful to the point where my eyes got watery and I felt uncomfortable being there. I am never going to this carmax again, and I will definitely tell friends and family about this experience that I have gone through so they don't face this as well. Carmax do something. We bought a car at this dealership 3 weeks ago. 10 days later a gentleman from Albany, NY called and explained he flew down from there to get his car. Long story short he was sent home a copy of all of my paperwork. Everything....social security number, financial info and much more personal identifiable information. I made an appointment at 10am and got a call at 9:55 from my salesman stating he would be "5 minutes late". Traffic happens. I was fine about it. As I waited inside near the front door for him to arrive (at 10:10) I got to listen to the different salesman waiting like sharks by the front door talk about which people coming up to the door "had money" and other unprofessional stereotypical comments about their appearance and customer desirability. The "30 minute appraisal" on my flawless 2002 Honda Accord took almost 60. During which my salesman took a call from his father, his wife, and three customers mid conversation. I test drove two vehicles while I was there and liked the second. After expressing some concern about how low my appraisal came back (they low balled me about $1,500 on my car according to kbb.com) the salesman recommended we look at edmunds.com, which ironically confirmed that my car was worth far more than they were offering. He mumbled about how the prices they offer are based on what they can actually buy the car for on the market. (So I save them even more money by just delivering it to them? Nice.) After researching online I found that vehicle I was considering buying was almost $5k overpriced! I know shopping for a vehicle is never fun or without the potential of being shafted but I had the impression that Carmax was supposed to be something special. Rude, overpriced, and underwhelming. An all around disappointing experience. I opted out of giving them $7k just to sign papers to buy another vehicle that I'd pay on for another five years, and I know I won't be doing business with them in the future. read more

Went to CarMax to test drive some cars. I was kindly greeted at the front desk and had my name put on the list. I was told that I was the only one on the list and that I would get a call soon. After an hour, I went back in to ask how much longer I would have to wait. A different person was at the desk and was rudely told that I had already been called and that I had not answered. I told him I had not been called. He confirmed my number 3 times and I kept telling him that it was my number and that nobody had called. So not believing me, he calls my number and my phone rings. Finally, after making it feel as though it was all my fault, he puts my name back on the list as a "priority". As I wait, I watch other people get called. I went back up to the desk to ask what was going on and am again told that I was called when I clearly had not been called. At that point I walked out. ​I would give it no stars, but I believe I have to do at least 1. My husband and I have bought 5 cars from CarMax and my daughter has worked there in the past. But it seems there is a new GM and new attitude with the Service department at the Dulles CarMax. My husband and I traded in our SUV, and purchased another SUV. We drove it for one hour and the check engine light came on, the power mirrors indicating someone was too close to the car to change lanes was not working, the vehicle made a horrible noise when it went over bumps and the list goes on. We took it back to the CarMax service dept and waited, and waited and waited. The service manager and general manager rode in the vehicle with my husband to "hear the noises," but claimed they heard nothing, basically telling my husband he was lying. Finally after I contacted CarMax corporate, the service manager shipped the car to the manufacture dealer to fix. There were major issues and once it was returned we were hopeful. Well all of our dreams were dashed, as the service engine light came back on, and the car was returned again to CarMax service for repair. Again the GM was snarky and rude to my husband, but after I contacted corporate (2nd time) we returned the SUV and got another one. We left with our second purchase, and hopeful all would be better. Well we had the SUV a week and the check engine light came on!!! Another SUV, not even the same make and model as the last one, and we had a check engine light come on. We also discovered that after we turned the vehicle off, and had the keys in our hand, the fan continued to run with the "remove key" error message. We were ready to cry, but laughed instead. Again we made a service apt thinking surely they will fix this quickly and we can go about enjoying our new SUV. NOPE that did not happen. CarMax could not figure out the problem so off to the manufacturer dealership service department it went. 2 weeks later, we are told all is good, the car has been fixed and it runs like a dream. Never mind we are paying for a car we are NOT driving, the tires are wearing down, but CarMax is not willing to make anything right, just provide a loaner CAR. We bought an SUV, we are given a loaner CAR. Anyway-back to the car story, so we take our car back and have high hopes, a week later, the car smells like wires are burning, we go to turn it off and guess what....yup the fan will not turn off even though my husband has the key in his hand. Also the happy warning light, "remove key," came back on. I contacted corporate (4th time by now) and my hubby drove the car back to CarMax service. 2 weeks later, they had not even looked at our SUV, I called corporate (yup again) and told them the story, suddenly our car is being assessed and we are told, "we can not duplicate your problem." Never mind the car had sat there for over a week with no one looking at it, and never mind carmax service failed to call the manufacturer dealership to service it again, NOPE they did NOTHING and let the SUV SIT. My husband calls, and calls, and the service person is always "with a customer." NEVER ever calls back at the office number where my husband is there and can talk to him. They call the cell phone where they hope we are not able to answer and leave a message. No one has talked to my husband this time around, they are treating us as if we are the problem. In reality CarMax in DULLES, VA is the problem. The GM seems to enjoy being rude, not willing to provide another vehicle at the same price (regardless of the headaches and long times newly purchased car is sitting in service), calling customers liars, and allowing the service department to treat customers as if the does not matter. This will be the LAST vehicle purchased from CarMax for us. My husband is not willing to pay the money to be mistreated and have a car that does not work. CARMAX GM please remember you are no longer in charge of a revolutionary concept, there are more dealers out there that are willing to provide better vehicles for a lower cost and will approver most if not all customers. I was selling my 2017 Lexus GS 200t with only 4,000 (not a typo) miles on it. I was offered $36,814 from Carvana, $37314 from Vroom, so I went on Carmax website to check out what they would offer. I received a response which stated that based on the condition I entered they would typically offer between $35,000 and $38,500, but I needed to make an appointment to have them complete the estimate in person. So I made the appointment, got there on-time, waited for an hour and a half, then they came out with an offer of $32,000. I asked what happened to their range of $35K to $38K. I was told that depends on the condition of the car. Well WTF! My car has been garaged its entire life, never driven in the rain, never had a passenger in it, leather seats are perfect, no knicks, dings...nothing. Its basically a new car with 4k miles. First I was very angry that they wasted 2 hours of my time by their lying and obvious bait and switch attempt, but then I just laughed, walked out, then disinfected my entire car with sanitry wipes, and the guy that appraised it had some serious BO! I let it air out for a few minutes before leaving. World of warning, these guys are such a rip-off and a waste of time. Do not buy vehicles from this business. Almost a year ago I purchased a '16 Fiesta and thought the ride was a little off on my way home 45 mins away. Turns out the power steering rack had a major leak, enough to have barely any fluid left in the reservoir. As a mechanic myself I got the parts and began to replace what was needed and ended up finding both front upper ball joints having major play and the driver front inner toe rod seized to the outer. They barely even bothered to check the god d&mn vehicle before giving it to me. Recently got rid of the vehicle because the valve cover gaskets had a slow leak with the trans cooler lines leaking as well. They don't know how to inspect vehicles before selling them read more

Purchased a Hyundai Sonata yesterday and really like It. I don't really trust salespersons too much, luckily almost everything is automated. Salespeople make over $100 (2013 data) for selling you the MaxCare which will increase their commission on the total sale by roughly 80% So really do your research before buying in to what may or may not be a good product. GAP insurance is total bs if you have car insurance. It's hard to rate a car company on the product because you never know what will happen: they could sell you a semi-lemon and you wouldn't know for months. The service is decent could be much better. Four stars not five because of long wait to sign papers. read more

Seriously disappointed with this CarMax. I reserved a car online at 8AM to test drive the following day. I promptly received an email from a sales associate confirming that car would be available for me to test drive (I had gone there previously and was disappointed I could not drive a car because someone else had a "free hold" on it)....All was going great because I thought I did the right thing the reserve the car ahead. Welp, 6PM that night I receive a voicemail that my reserved car was given to another person with ZERO explanation. I was told to contact her manager Cena. I left a voicemail for Cena expressing my concern and received no call back. I reached out again to my original sales associate, Praveen, and she never got back to me either after I told her that Cena refused to return my call. Very very poor customer service. I still don't understand how it took an entire day for them to let me know my reservation was stolen. They should not allow online reservations if they cannot guarantee it... WHAT IS THE POINT OF ONLINE HOLD IF IT IS NOT HELD?? And the way the sales associates handled it by just ignoring me will make me never shop there again. Get it together! I just bought a 2016 Ford Escape with my fiancé on 10/25. The buying process was easy and Mark was great. It did take quite a bit of time but I know that can be a time consuming process. On 10/30 the low tire pressure light came on during my drive home from work. The next day my fiancé took it to the gas station and said all the tires were a little low but it could have been due to the dramatic weather change and the car sitting still for a while on the lot, so he filled all the tires to the level they were supposed to be. On 11/1 I came out to a completely flat tire on the rear driver side tire. Called the service department that day as soon as they opened and they said bring it in before 12pm. We took it in around 11AM that day and they asked if we wanted a loaner car because it will be a little while. After waiting 30 minutes for the loaner we were on our way. Also asked them to fix a couple of problems that were there when we bought it, including a scuff mark on the back and an automatic lift gate problem. They call us later that day to say the valves on the tires were shit all the way. They didn't think to tell us they are closed on the weekends (we dropped it off on a Friday) and that it might be a few days. They called today 11/4 to say they are still waiting on some parts, and didn't give us an estimate on when it will be fixed. I'm so flipping upset with them and do not recommend their service department. read more

My first experience was selling a car. It was fast, service was great, and based on my research they gave me a fair price and I'd highly recommend it. I was in the market for a new car and once I told my liaison, who was helping me with the evaluation of my car, he didn't pressure me at all, just wished me luck. After talking to 12 different new car dealers and having issues with EVERY single one of them giving me an accurate, reasonable price without trying to gouge me, trick me, or talk down to me, I had enough. They really reinforced the stereotype of "car salesman" Since I had such a good experience at Carmax I decided to go the used car route, my only prerequisite was it had to have low mileage. There wasn't a lot of selection for low mileage cars but as soon as I found one I put it on hold, made an appt., went in and checked it out and decided to buy it. My big takeaway from this is know how much the car you are looking at should cost and if they are selling it for that get it, if not keep looking. Some cars seemed a little high some a little low. Their price of the car is what it is and their only add on is a processing fee. Taxes, tags, title are not something anybody can get out of paying so I don't consider them an add on. If you don't want to have to be decontaminated to get the slime and filth off skip the dealerships and go to carmax read more

I looked online and found my dream car, a 2015 Corvette, on the CarMax I pass at least once every week. Once I located the car, I hustled to CarMax as soon as I could. Purchasing the car couldn't have been easier and more pleasant except for the paperwork portion of the sale. I was paying cash but it still took over 3 hours to get into see what would be the finance and insurance person at a regular dealership. 2 stars because I don't feel great about the experience with carmax. First, the online documentation on the car I bought stated a $99 processing fee (which is a joke). Just another way to squeeze more money out of the customer. When the paperwork came through it had a $299 processing fee. When I questioned it, the sales guy stated their fee has been $299 for quite some time. Did not address online fee of $99. Shady practice. Also, what is a $50 Business License Fee? Never addressed by the sales guy until I brought it up. His answer was close to Vinnie Barbarino dumb. "Huh, what, where oh all our sales have that.'. What? Shady practice. I am sure it is all somehow legal and carmax will go to the mat on that but still. Carmax has become just another car dealership. Too bad. So after driving the car less than 1,000 miles, the car is in the shop with a $2,000 repair bill. Synopsis: Carmax ran my credit under false pretense, they let me drive off the lot with a vehicle that had a bad ABS system and bad mechanical brake components, they lied about doing a second 125pt inspection, and clearly didn't do the first one, and they are not proficient in the diagnostic or resolution of mechanical issues. I would like to premise this review, that I work in the tire industry for a multi-national warehouse that may be known for having the best member service in the industry, so I have mechanical literacy. I also attend school full time and work full time, so my money and time is very precious to me, as large financial decisions almost always put me on the brink of financial death. When I first started using Carmax to look for cars, I was decently surprised by all of their offerings, and specifically a beautiful Mini Cooper S Clubman from 2010. The car was in Virginia and I currently live in Houston, so I called to make an inquiry on the vehicle. This is where the first major issue occurred. On the phone call I asked for the monthly payment with a given amount of money down, for the price of the vehicle, tax, title, *shipping*, and *all associated fees*. The gentleman(Marquis) on the phone proceeded to input all of the numbers in his system and asked for authorization to run my credit. Upon approval for the vehicle with all my desired terms, the associate then asked for my credit card number. Confused, I asked why this was necessary, his response: for the shipping. He did not clarify that this fee was separate, and I thought nothing of it, I thought I just couldn't get the vehicle I was fixated on. A couple hours later I realized they ran my credit under false pretenses and I called into the call center to state this. The gentleman offered to waive the shipping fee upon the review of the call. After 4 days of calling back I finally spoke to a manager named Ron, who just conceded the shipping fee because I had been blown off so many times, but the car was put on hold during that time. Luckily the next day the car was back on the market. Finally the Mini was on its way to me. Upon its arrival, Carmax Gulf Freeway had told me that they were going to do a 125 point inspection for the second time and that they would expedite this process as the car I was currently driving at the time died. I went to test drive the vehicle, it was raining that day and the abs light came on. I thought this was the vehicle telling me that the system was in action, however I have only driven Japanese vehicles, and did not understand the German indication light scheme. In fact, the system had failed and the brakes on the vehicle were bad, slipping in fact . Upon talking to two AES certified mechanics about the issue, they told me that this was illegal on Carmax's part, and Carmax ended up replacing the wheel speed sensor, all pads, and rotors. It was very clear at this point that they did not take their inspections seriously, as this would have been very apparent upon a code reading. Next issue arises after only having my vehicle for 5 days, code p2188 pops up, indicating that bank 1 is running rich at idle and/or deceleration. No codes appeared stating that the o2 sensor had a bad heating circuit or failure but the techs determined that this was the issue, and I myself took issue with this diagnostic, outlining reasons as to why this wouldn't fix the issue. Not even 20mi out of service the car through the check engine light again, and upon my next interaction with the service adviser I had learned that in fact a 2nd 125pt inspection never did occur, which was not surprising. Carmax advertises a no hassle car buying experience, and not outlined in this review are the hours spent on the phone trying to maintain communication, and the numerous different responses related to their policies. read more

Worst place to try to buy a car, that's right I said try because this people never ask us what we need. We walk in with a $50.000 loan approved from our bank to buy a car but everyone seems to be busy doing nothing. read more

Their appraisals are a joke and a half. Granted, we should have known better than to go here in the first place but we were curious about how their appraisal for trade-in would compare to local dealers'. We did our due diligence, got a few quotes from dealers, looked at auction values and finally looked at what Carmax itself was selling a comparable (same year, make, mileage, condition) vehicle for. They came in exactly TEN GRAND under what they were selling the same car for. And could not explain the discrepancy. After we were told by our sales person that the usual markup on the vehicles is approx. $2,500. Do not bother with their appraisals or buyers. read more
