Selling a car owned by a family member now deceased is not an easy situation. There is emotion but there is also a need to feel like you are being treated fairly. Took the car here for an estimate in November. Title was still a work in progress so just wanted to see what they would offer. Knew the Blue Book value and what it could go for on the open market which was $8,000 but was not ready to handle people coming to the house for test drives etc. By the time the title was clear, it was another calendar year. Car Max said $5,500 was the right price. Want back three months later when the title was clear. The car was the same with about another couple hundred miles. Price presented by Car Max? Dropped $2,000. These people are not your friend, they are not fair and they will take advantage. Give the car to charity and take the tax write off. Find a way, any way that does not allow Car Max to cheat the seller and inflate the price for the buyer which I am sure is what they do. Bottom line? The person helping me with this is a longtime buyer of Car Max vehicles. No more. Never again. Do right by people and they do right by you. Despicable. Disappointing. Downright wrong. read more

I will not document my experience in details as it was one of the worse customer experiences I have ever had in my 62 trips around the sun. If I could give negative stars I would. Situation : Selling my car to them via online quote I setup an appointment (arrived early), had all the documentation and nearly 6 hours later and I swear 10 different people, I finally was walking out the door ! Staff: All seemed friendly but no one and I mean NO ONE took ownership of my visit, leads me to the process...... Process: On a 1-10 scale of bad to good -1000. I was handed off multiple times and each time I had to go seek out someone to get an update. Too many hands touched the process and the communication to me was, well, non existent. When I tried to track down the "last person" who I talked to, they were either no where to be found or left for the day. When I thought it was on the last person, we were reviewing/singing the last documents and behold, they were paying me 10K more that they should have (they had the pay off amount wrong). After being the 5 hours I almost just ignored it and was going to take the money.....but, being an honest person, I could not do that - so back to the drawing board, and I was delayed again. Now, one would think they would have "thanked me" for catching THEIR 10K mistake, but no one person said thanks, in fact the last person I was with, when I stated I was not falsifying anything / fraud and could have walked out the door, she said and I quote "that would not have been your fraud, it would have been ours" ... .what ??? So I decided to reach out to the corp office to let them know and well, the local office must be following the corporate "example"......they replied, did not even thank me for the 10K catch.... this was the best they came back with ...... "I promise you that I will share your experience with our senior leadership teams so that we can make sure we take this feedback into account and provide it to the right teams to make sure that this does not become our norm." Big open space, with plenty of salespeople milling around. This is the second time I have sold a car here, and both times it was pretty effortless. I made an appointment, but you don't even have to do that. The process could not be simpler, especially if you have the title on your car. Go in, get a salesperson, he sends someone out to inspect and drive your car, and when that is completed, your salesperson takes you into an office to tell you your offer. This time that entire process took less than half an hour. The salesperson has no ability to change your offer however - what comes up on the screen is what they will pay, and there is no altering the price. My first car I sold, I thought I got a fair price. This last time, the price was very obviously low. I still took the offer though, because compared to all the time, hassle, and expense of listing it and showing it on my own, it wouldn't be worth it to me. I'm sure they count on that, and price accordingly. Once you agree to the deal, they take you to the finance offer to have you sign paperwork and write you a check. That part of the process takes about 30-45 minutes, however, the people in this area could not have been nicer or more helpful. I've bought a number of cars at this store and have always had stellar customer service. Jay (sales rep) is the best! He's knowledgeable, kind, respectful and above all will do whatever it takes to make his customers happy. Shawn and Michael (managers) are phenomenal. Jennifer and Cassie (business office) were super nice to us when we did our returns. They were both super cool about it. We also worked with Ameen as a sales rep and he was great to work with. I've returned cars I've purchased here and used the 7 day return window and they have always been very understanding and accommodating. The fact that you can buy a car and swap it for another within 7 days is a service that makes the Carmax experience special and sets them above the regular dealers. I just spent two hours at CarMax looking for bank statements etc. It's okay, I'm thinking. I was already pre-approved so it's just documentation. Once they were printed out, the bank statements, that is, the manager on the sales side said the bank wouldn't accept the income become it didn't say specifically where it was from. They also wanted be to "double" up on my VA disability income. Go find the award letter; bank statements showing deposits dron the VA isn't good enough. So why am I not dissing the lender? The salesperson I worked with was very kind, so kind that she let us know that it's because we were at CarMax. Worse, the first guy I spoke with never sent a link for me to submit these docs, never told me I'd need an award letter AND bank statements (I've never needed both before) and never told Me the lender was psycho about CarMax buyers. If you're self employed, stay away from CarMax. If you're using VA disability, retirement, or pension to qualify, stay away from CarMax. If you've changed banks for any reason recently, stay away from CarMax. In fact - if you want to avoid a headache, stay away from CarMax. At this point I was just so upset I couldn't believe that this could be happening to me, after having such a wonderful experiences with Carmax Tampa. After having a wonderful online buying experience with another retailer called Carvana. I couldn't believe that this happened. I was so upset I didn't want to even look at another car in Carmax or even at this point do more business. Upon me calling the Carmax team to let them know my experience, Mandy was now my contact at the location. She offered to really recondition the vehicle and as soon as that was done I could come back to Carmax in Tampa and check out the vehicle. (Including a test drive) The following week I went in after the vehicle was "reconditioned" to experience a test drive and make sure that it was up to par. Mandy was very nice, and put me in touch with someone named Mack. I took a test drive with my mother-in-law, the car was a good drive. Upon returning the vehicle, I noticed the leather was still not good. I also noticed several other factors of the car I never even noticed before were wrong. I adjusted his concerns which were multiple with Mac and at this point a man name Emilio who is a manager in Carmax Tampa. Damage to driver door also needs painted. Cup holder missing plastic. Antenna was bent crooked maybe from a car wash? Plastic clip in back seat Wrong keys (needs to be with remote start, suspension included on key fob w proximity) Seat heater buttons in the back Limited edition ram all weather floor Matts Also back up camera not functioning? Now fast forward two weeks. I called carmax Tampa every single day. I will try to connect with Mandy, Emilio, or Linda. The only person to call me back, was Linda. Emilio called me back, after I let the fire under your business office. however, Mandy and Emilio would often tell me they would call me back and I would never receive a call phone call. I feel like they should have been calling me daily to give me updates earning my business. In reality, I was calling every single day I was looking for what was happening. fast forward 14 days later from the initial home delivery it was still not complete. Saturday wasn't complete. Sunday I again reached back out. Emilio was who I spoke to that said he would for sure return my call by Monday early am. He did. Monday called me 9:40am. Would have an answer by noon. Called me back 12:14pm (I was on a WFH ZOOM CALL) he had left no voicemail. I called back but he was on lunch. Mind you I have no extension to reference except the business office. When I select sales I'm re routed to a call center not the store. Anyways, he called me back around 4:06pm left no message. I returned his call after I was finished with work at 5:25pm and he said everything was complete except for one small plastic piece in the back. Now I was trusting it was actually complete. Trusting he went out to inspect the vehicle. I decided to get a ride with my mother in law to come check it out. I asked for Linda who put me with another sales associate. (I actually hope nobody gets commission from the end sale of my purchase) At this point as of Monday it has been 21 days since my initial application for finance. I had reiterated this multiple times to every single manager I talk to you. I was told it doesn't disappear until 30 days. However I called capital one and they told me that it was 21 to 25 days, it changes and they were able to give me an exact date. So at this point I'm frustrated as I don't want my credit to be reran a fourth time. So I go outside And I am mediately see they're still damage and no paint repaired on the driver side door. The sales associate hands me the keys to the car, and they are not the correct keys red flag number two. I look at the antenna and it's still bent, it's not complete. Hi get inside the car and I can tell, that nobody has re-condition the leather or even detailed it. You could take it to a detailer who can make the car look much nicer than the current condition. There was no plastic piece in the cupholder there was no floor mats and from what I could see the only two things that were fixed was the vent clip that was broken and the back seat warmer buttons were no longer worn out. It's actually quite embarrassing. The associate said wow omg we should never let you see a vehicle in this condition let me get Linda. She came over. She seemed embarrassed as the communication to her was everything was complete but the one piece in the back. She even told me she saw the keys but surprised herself they aren't there. They do free appraisals, which I'll be doing that soon. A different dealer who couldn't give me much for my older foreign car said that they are the go-to place for a good estimate, as opposed to the big name dealerships that specialize in those cars. I had a pretty good experience overall but my qualm was with the fact that I had set-up a standing appointment in advance to sell my car. When I arrived, I notified them of my appointment and they basically had no knowledge of it even though I did it via their website and received a confirmation phone call. This put a bad taste in my mouth because they were extremely busy and I ended up waiting quite a while with two ornery toddlers. I also got handed off to about 4 different people for different reasons but they all seemed to know what was going on and if it meant I got out of there faster, I was ok with it. The gentleman doing the appraisal looked to be about 16 years old but I don't want to discount his expertise as I was happy with the offer I received and I was happy to walk out of there car-free and check-in-hand. I think they run a fair operation. I cannot speak of how they handle new purchases since I was solely there to sell my car. I thought they were honest though and the process was simple enough. Wife and I ordered a Lexus RX 450hL 3 weeks ago, spent about 2 hours on the phone with "Stephanie" and she went over the info about how it will be shipped and all the ins and outs of how it would get shipped to Henderson. She mentioned carmax prides itself on communication throughout the whole process. Anyway, after we reserved our car, she sent me the link to pay for shipping to send it from Tampa to Henderson Nevada, it was 2,000 dollars. They promised to have it ready to drive in 21 days and they would let us know where it was every second of the way. Well, 3 weeks passed and not a single word from anyone from CarMax on our email or over the phone, and my wife is now ready to have a baby any day now and we were getting a little anxious that we were going to have the baby with no car. So I called them and they put us on hold for a while, then told us they would call us back. After an hour someone called from carmax to let us know, sorry but this car has an electronic title that cannot be transferred from Florida(even though it said otherwise, hence us paying 2k) Stephanie also said it was ready to be shipped. Then they said they had to cancel the transaction 2 weeks ago, but we never got a phone call? Never got our money back? And we didn't get an email, like what? So if we didn't call, we would've never been notified of our missing money and car. So the sale rep said, I'm so sorry, but there is one EXACTLY like it they could send from Florida,(it was literally different in every way including every color imaginable) I'm like, so not only are we out 2 thousand dollars but we also got our credit ran? And all you can do is offer one completely different? Ya no thanks. He says they will refund the money, but they also said they would be shipping the car under 3 weeks and have it ready to go. So I won't hold my breath for my money back, what sucks is carmax is a massive corporation and there is nothing I can do to get taken care of, their 19 year old sales reps have no idea what's going on and can't even offer anything in a way of taking care of me. It really sucks that this had to be the first impression of carmax, so I'll try my best to help other people avoid carmax so they don't get the same experience I had. I needed a car. I saw a Nissan Pathfinder I loved. My sales guy won the presidential or top award from the company. He was very like likable and charismatic. Once he quoted me my monthly payment, it was too high. I told him that. He kept tying to see if there was able to do something. The monthly amount kept going up. He suggested I buy and re-finance in a few months. Turns out, he ran my credit report 7 times!!!! 7 times!! Of course that affected my credit. It takes 2 years to resist. When I went else where. It was challenging cuz I had so many credit reports ran on me. He didn't want me to be able to get a car elsewhere. Dirty. So crazy. If I could give them a negative rating i would. WARNING TO ANYONE BRINGING THEIR OWN FINANCING I walked in, waited an hour, was issued a Salesman who I explained that I had my own financing through a local credit union and that I would definitely be using them. I had also located my truck on the Carmax app so it was just a matter of paying the transfer fee and waiting for it to arrive. Two weeks later when the truck arrived, on Presidents Day, I went to pick it up. Of course the credit union was closed on the holiday so the salesman explained they have a deal where you apply for financing BUT they hold the paperwork for 3 days to give you the chance to come in with your own financing, this deal had a catchy phrase but I cant remember it. I thought this sounded like a good idea, it would save me coming back to the dealership, and I could leave with the truck. What ACTUALLY happened was they sent my credit app through at least 5 banks. They financed it through Santander. In the meantime, promptly Monday morning after the holiday my credit union monetized the loan and took possession of the title. Later that week I heard from Santander wanting to talk about setting up auto payments, etc, I was like who are you? I called my credit union to confirm they had paid for the truck and found that they had. After receiving the fifth bank letter regarding my credit applications, I called Carmax to complain. I spoke with Russ in their finance office. He explained to me that Carmax had done EXACTLY what they were supposed to do. I said "what about waiting the three days?" to which he responded "what did you think we were going to do? Just let you leave with the truck without financing in place?". My answer, not that it mattered to him, was that "yes, that is what I thought you would do since thats what the salesman said, and furthermore I left a truck with you as trade that was valued at 4/5 the value of the truck I bought, plus this being the 9th car/truck I have bought here in 9 years I think we have a solid relationship." I have bought so many cars and trucks here over the years I was astounded that they would treat a good customer this way. What it boils down to is this.....I think you can get a good deal at Carmax, and I think searching their inventory online is very easy, I would just warn anyone who has their own financing to not accept the "3 Day deal" unless you actually want the vehicle financed through the wrong bank and your credit hit by 4 other banks. I have often wondered why Carmax seems to place no value on customer loyalty, you always get a different salesman, there is no benefit to buying multiple cars over the years. Where as at a conventional dealership they remember you, they know your name, they appreciate your business, and when they screw something up they own up to it and try and find a way to make it right. I can say this because in addition to all the cars I have bought at Carmax I also recently bought one at Jerry Ulm. The folks there made mistakes, but they handled them all professionally and to my liking. At Carmax they just argue with you, tell you your wrong, that you misunderstood, that they did everything correctly, etc. read more

Took the car home and discovered a few minor issues and called Carmax to make an appointment. They had to order parts from the Volvo dealer so they gave me loaner car. Took a little to get the parts from Volvo, no problem had a loaner. Only minor complaint is they had the car from Friday - Wednesday and when I picked it up it was covered in pollen. It's spring in FL so this happens but you think they could of at least ran it thru the car wash. Then when reviewing the documents I saw that they were going to charge me a $399 fee set right beside it said they cannot legally charge this fee. So at dealership and was told it's not even the key for the car and it needs a new one at a cost of 400. Guess I will be pressing on the 30 day return policy. I've been driving for over 20 years and in that time I've had 17 cars. I love buying cars. I love new cars but I've bought mostly used. 6 of them I've bought from Carmax. I love the Carmax concept. Prices are cleary marked. Take it or leave it. They will also buy your used car even if you don't buy from them. I've sold 4 cars to them, and used their written offers on others to beat up other dealers on their trade in offers. One word of caution. You need to be informed and do your research. Not all their advertised prices are good. Some are awesome, some are not. And their offers to buy your car are not always good. What I absolutely love about this place is that it is what it is. There is no pressure, so you get time to do your research. Their website is very good, and they'll ship cars from other Carmax dealers nationwide for a very reasonable fee. They also offer extended warranties and have a very large service department. If you are in the market for a used car, do yourself a favor and visit Carmax. Or even better check out their website first to at least get a sense of what is out there without having to haggle or play games. You may find yourself a good deal without too much effort. Lie in your face and say running it only impacts your credit once meanwhile every time they do it's another 3 points per creditor. Scam artist at its finest, they will drop your credit 100 points before telling you its $5000 down for a car that isn't worth even kkb value. I bought a car online from Carmax. It was the BEST experience I have ever had. An experience any company would be proud of, but it's what happened next that made me a customer for life. I bought the Maxcare repair coverage and about 5 months in, my car had been to the shop 3 times and I was out of pocket $2100. Nothing major, just some maintenance things, and a fluke repair to reconnect a shifter cable. Still I hadn't put very many miles on my car and seemed to me something wasn't quite right. I spoke to my local repair shop and Maxcare, "there's nothing we can do", and was referred to Carmax service in Tampa. The Service Department Manager, Branden Myrick, who had been on the job less than a week, returned my call. I told him how great my purchase experience had been with Carmax and in contrast this service/Maxcare experience was a let down. He was patient and empathetic and reviewed my detailed repair receipts. Branden said he would speak to my repair shop and Maxcare on my behalf and see what he could do. No promises. He texted me often to let me know he was still working on it. Three weeks later he called and explained that the repair shop and Maxcare, having followed policy and procedure, weren't going to be able to help me. But Carmax was refunding me for two of my service plan deductibles!! He said he wished he could do more. I was thrilled. There is a reason great customer service is so rare, it is very difficult to get right. It is easy to give great customer service when you sell a car. Staying committed to the customer relationship/experience, after the sale, when things can get bumpy takes a whole other level of dedication. Congratulations on building such a great organization. To whom it may concern: Shortly after servicing our country in the Navy as a GSM. I relocated to Tampa,Florida where I purchased a 2011 BMW 335D from a Carmax locates at Nebraska Ave Tampa,Florida. Immediately after driving off the lot the check engine light appeared showing less than 50% (reduced) power. I returned the vehicle and within 10 minutes a technician reset the car so the errors would not show. Over the course of the last three years I have had countless mechanical issues with the vehicle. I have had various BMW dealers tell me that Carmax was dishonest and sold a faulty car. I have spent over $10k in fixing the mechanical issues, and Carmax's response was I should have bought the extended service. Returning to a civilian life was difficult enough and then to have such a terrible experience with a vehicle that was over priced and sold with mechanical issues diminished made my trust in large companies, such as Carmax. I strongly believe that the CarMax and their technicians are following bad practices and not fixing vehicles correctly prior to selling. I know that I should have returned the vehicle, but my mind was not fully in civilian mode upon leaving the Naval Service. So... my main statement is buyer (and seller) beware! My 2018 experience was a chance for CarMax to redeem themselves (I'll share 2013 experience below), but they failed. I took my car in to CarMax for an appraisal. I noted to them that the car had a sports package. On a car that they listed all aspects as "good," I received an offer $1000 below what blue book lists as poor. No problem... they can offer what they want and I am free to accept or decline. However, after I left, I noted that the appraisal listed the car as "no trim" (indicating it was a base model, not the sports model that the salesperson assured me I'd get more money for). I texted the salesperson back and was told that "sports package" was chosen in the computer, but it was omitted on the print-out. I pointed out that it wasn't omitted, but was stated as not present. I've gone back and forth with customer service and the management team, but they state that it is correct in the computer and incorrect on the printed document they provided me. Interesting... they've never once offered to show me the screenshot of the computer screen indicating "sports package" was chosen. The real issue isn't the offer, but with transparency. This leads me to my experience in 2013. I chose a car I wanted (right color, model, new tires, etc.) and paid $100 to have it shipped to me. I was trading in a car with them that had a check engine light issue that I hadn't been able to resolve and I was very upfront with them about it -- took what they offered me for the car and told them I was trying to get away from the check engine issue. When the car I chose arrived, they told me there was a bad sensor in the car and it would be a couple of days before I could actually buy it. They let me test drive it and there were no dashboard lights on. About 2 days later, the car was ready for purchase (mind you they hadn't given me the $100 back to ship it, so I still had priority). I bought it and got less than 1/2 a mile from the dealership when the check engine light came on. It was closing on Friday, so I returned the car on Saturday. When I pulled in the salesperson actually said, "Oh, the light came back on?" Turns out that the car had suffered "catastrophic engine failure" (Mercedes Benz dealer terminology for a part that cost $10,000 to fix). The salesperson and manager actually admitted that the "car shouldn't have been on the lot" and that they'd "hoped it would go past the 5 days so I'd have to keep it and then the warranty would have fixed it." That's called FRAUD! I pointed out that they'd had an opportunity to do the right thing by returning my shipping fee ($100) and telling me about the issue upfront. Instead, they offered to return my malfunctioning car to me and call it even. In the end, they agreed to avoid a lawsuit (I had already contacted an attorney) by shipping me a car from Texas. Before they did, I pointed out that the tires on the one I had purchased were new and the one they were replacing it with were not, so I stated that I'd only agree to the replacement if they put new tires on the car. They agreed. Once the car arrived, however, they attempted to renig on the deal because they discovered that the car they had chosen had a sports package and had very expensive low-profile tires. In the end, I assumed I'd run upon a "bad egg" in the company, but my 2018 experience has proven that this a company culture that is not conducive to good (or HONEST!) customer service. We came into CarMax to get a quote on selling my car. We called a day ahead of time to make an appointment and they very clearly explained what we should expect. We were in right at opening on a Sunday. Aaron was very helpful and explained everything to us well. The building is very modern and has some cool pictures of Tampa on the walls. read more

Went to have my fairly new vehicle appraised so that I can sell it to CarMax. It was appraised $3,000 +/- below market value. I guess CarMax wants to make a huge profit on cars that consumers bring to their door steps. They even had a similar vehicle with more miles for sale at almost $3,000 more than what they were offering me for mine. They want to profit $3,000 on a $16,000 vehicle. I'm in the wrong business. read more
