I was in search of a Toyota Highlander Platinum with low miles and found one at a CarMax in Illinois. After doing my own research on the vehicle, I paid $199 to have it shipped here. The vehicle arrived on time, and I was notified it was ready to test drive. My sales rep was Andrew Nyongi and I can't say enough great things about that young man. He was responsive, caring, thorough, and just a joy to do business with. We test drove the car and it was perfection! A few days later, we arrived to purchase it. The whole process took less than 30 minutes. Best car buying experience we have EVER had! Based on this interaction, I would not hesitate one bit to purchase another vehicle here. I have to start this by saying the local staff at the Carmax in Des Moines was great to work with, they tried. But Carmax financial in Carol Stream Illinois, was of no help at all. I'll try to make this brief. I went to Carmax to sell my 2020 LT1 Camaro but we ran into an issue. An individual bought the car from Carmax in 2021 they say he still owes $30k on it. He apparantly abandoned the vehicle at a repair shop and walked away from the repair shop bill and the loan. The repair shop went through the process to legally acquire the car and get it titled. They sold it to a dealership (who I spoke with), who sold it to the person I bought it from. Carmax Financial is telling me I have to go back to the repair shop (No clue what the shop is) and get them to figure it out, even though they went through the legal process in Tennessee to get the title. In a nutshell, some lowlife in Tennessee owes Carmax money and Carmax is making it my problem. read more

If you value your time, please don't waste it with this store. I made an appointment to test drive a car, and even arrived 5 minutes early. The sales associate that helped me when my partner and I first walked in was very friendly. They confirmed my appointment and instructed me to sit down and someone would be with me in (this is important), NO TIME at all. My partner and I sat down and I looked around the store, envisioning a great experience. The entire building was clean, well staffed, and bright. I noticed most employees sitting at their desks or speaking to one another, so I thought 'wow, maybe I'll be helped right away!' Oh, how silly this assumption of mine was. Fast forward FORTY MINUTES LATER, several other customers are waiting while employees are chilling in the break room and chatting with each other at their desks. One customer is being helped by another sales associate. Let me remind you, this is 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday night. We ended up leaving at about 6:40 p.m. Why make an appointment when you have to wait nearly an hour to be helped? I'm usually not an unreasonable person. I'm not a Karen, and I understand employees should be allowed downtime. But it's just so frustrating to have to wait for that long when you see the store virtually empty, and you made an appointment. read more

Totally bad news....Was looking for a Volks Beetles Convertible on Auto Trader and found one on a Carmax lot in MPLS. They said that they would ship it to their lot in DSM for $99, so I paid for it and when the car showed up, I asked when I could look at and drive it....I was told that the title was "in transit" and I could not look at or drive the car until they received the title.....OK...fast forward 6 weeks...we were "allowed" to look at the car but not drive it....eventually did, the bottom line being that after the delay and runaround, now I'm incented to look elsewhere for a similar car...and found one....one year newer, half the miles and $2500 less than Carmax....what do you think I did, I can honestly say that my experience with Carmax didn't suck...it suckity-suck-sucked....never to return to this scam-o-rama read more

I went to the website. I said I was interested in a vehicle. The call center will call you in 0.003 seconds and stay on the phone with you while enticing you to buy some b.s. If you dont know anything about cars like me then you'll wind up screwed. I get to the place expecting to just get some keys and drive off. Some group of fools was in the buisness office laughing and having a good time. Then one looked up and they said have you been helped after about 20 minutes. They had no record of me completing the process online. So I had to answer all the questions again. They gave me the keys. I paid them 8K for what I thought was a reliable car. First off never buy a Kia or a Hyundai. Please do research on limp mode. They know that the cars wont make it to 100k. As soon as your vehicle starts guzzling oil, but no oil stains are on the ground. You need to hand that car right back then and there. I stupidly thought I had a good car, and drove it around. I didn't get the max plan, I just got the gap insurance. GAP insurance means jack if your car isnt stolen or crashed into. I took my car to Stew Hansen Hyundai to get serviced and bought the advantage care plan for oil changes. I'll write a review for those punks too. I doubt those bastards ever changed the oil to my vehicle. Or my filter, or rotated my tires. They try and offer other services, but if you say yes. They certainly do not get done. Then after they throw your car into the car wash they drive it up to the front and the service techs wont notice for 100 years. The one time I drive my car more than an hour. Blinking check engine P1326 code. Tow $350 to Stew Hansen Car is 2019 and has less than 150,000 miles. Still under manufacturers extended warranty. A class action lawsuit happened, so they had to give people new engines for free. Though their mechanics it will always pass the rod bearing test, so that they don't have to do that. Always a loop hole to be lazy and bastards. They are liars to the core. They said they couldn't test it for 48 hours. You know it's B.S. when they call you at 8AM sharp. They said give it another hour for another $238. For what the P1326 is the engine kill code. It's shot. I ask for them to buy it then, or give me a trade thinking the car i bought for 20K was worth atleast something. They say they dont want to trade it for anything cause they know its junk. Paid a $238 for my single diagnostic fee and had my car towed back to punk CarMax. They offer me a measley 4K. This was a $20k car. Not even 10 years old. still had to pay over $2k to break even. Both places deserve nothing more than to be burned to the ground. Looking for a new car now Toms Auto group is a scam. Dewey is a scam. Toyota is too expensive. So just waiting to get taken in the back with no lube. None of these people are honest. Not one dealership or mechanic can be trusted in this economy. This will teach me for trying to buy a car from a big box store. My husband and I were looking at a Nissan Pathfinder that was actually located in Independence. But CarMax said we could have it transferred to Des Moines so we could test drive it. Great! I was really looking forward to driving this one and we were seriously considering purchasing, going as far as contacting our bank about a loan. After putting in the information online, we get a call to from an associate to go through the rest of the information, and transfer is initiated....or so we thought. We were told the transfer from Independence to Des Moines could take up to 7 days. So we wait 7 days...and hear nothing. Try then to get a hold of someone at the Des Moines location for 2 full days, we finally do talk to a person and not a hold line. They can't seem to find our profile? They say they are going to try to find it and will call back. 3 hours later, no call back. So we call again. Finally talk to someone who seems to know what they are doing, only to find out that the transfer was NOT finalized by the person we spoke to last week and the car was sold in Independence the next day! So spent a week waiting for a car that was never coming. The guy we spoke to last that was in Des Moines was nice enough to see if there was anything in the national inventory that was similar to what we wanted to look at, but there was nothing. Unfortunately, I will no longer purchase from CarMax. I had bought a car a few years back and had a great experience but not this time in Des Moines. Had a car shipped from MN which needed to be jump started for our test drive. Liked the car and the salesperson said they would check the battery. Went back to purchase a few weeks later because it took time for the title to be switched. At the store we were doing the paperwork (car is for my wife) and they have it parked on the other side of the glass window clean, running and ready to go. After they have us sign they take us out to the car and tell us they had to jump it and it likely has a bad battery and we can either leave it or take it home. Long story short we told them to take the car back and void the agreement. In my opinion they showed a complete lack of integrity and I did not appreciate how they treated my wife who really like the car. Soon after purchasing my car I noticed the brakes were bad. Contacted CarMax and they fixed them for free. I ended up needing brake work 1 year later and Carmax wouldn't help so i took my car to our regular mechanic. He replaced the brake pads and showed me that the CarMax service team sprayed some type of lubricant on the rotors instead of replacing them. They were bad and needed replacing over a year ago but they tricked me into thinking they were fixed. Shame on you CarMax. Buyer beware that you can't trust them or you need to stand over the top of the service team to monitor their work. read more

It was as advertised (perfect). Exactly what I'd been searching for. The sale went smoothly and I did opt for their Maxcare service plan. Worst car buying experience I've ever had. Leaving this review so others are aware of the car buying situation i experienced with carmax. 22 days ago, i got approved for a car. Paid for it to be shipped. Arrived 2 days later. 20 days after arrival, they still are unable to find the title and said it will take MONTHS to do so. So i have to find a new car. After asking, they are refunding me. Did not offer this until i asked. Was told to find a different car so i found 2, those 2 apparently cannot be shipped in because they dont have the titles. Was showed 2 other cars that THEY found for me as replacements, but after agreeing found they are already in transfer for others. So i wasted an entire month trying desperately to get a car i qualified for (over 20k budget available) to walk away upset, refunded, but this still leaves me with a credit hit that will stay on my record for 2 years. This has been the worst car buying experience I've ever experienced. And while I'm being refunded the 300 shipping fee for the CAR THEY WERE LETTING ME BUY, im just out of luck on now not getting a car, and my credit took a heavy hit with the inquiry that was done based on a car they told me they could sell me. Beyond unhappy. Will highly recommend buying from ANY business that is not this one. I wanted to trade my car and filled out a questionaire online so I had a price for my trade-in before I even went in to CarMax. That helped me consider my down payment and what I could afford for a new car. I could also view their inventory and prices online so I had an idea of which car I wanted when I went in. I was greeted at the front by someone who checked me in and the service department looked my car over while we discussed what I needed for my next car. I test drove 2 Outback's, liked both of them, and picked one. They gave me the same price for my car as it said on the internet which I felt was fair. I forgot to bring one set of keys and they acted like that was no big deal. The financing was reasonable and I financed my car there. Buying a different car always takes several hours but this was painless and I left the same day with a 2 year old car. I have had the car for almost 6 months and am ready for my first oil change. I am looking forward to trying out the service department. I hope I have a good experience there too. read more

They are ordering a part and will install it next Tuesday (after Labor Day weekend). My wife sent email to our sales guy, John, expressing frustration and requesting explanation about what was going on, why it was so difficult to fix, what would cause this in a 2015 vehicle with under 16,000 miles, and why it wasn't found during the pre-sale inspection process. Five days later, with me still in a moldy rental, on September 6 my wife received call from a Carmax technician. He explained that the suspected problem was a faulty suspension link - problem due to engineering error, not due to wear and tear, that's why it was missed during the pre-sale inspection. He said this has definitely resolved the issue and she should have me come pick it up after work. I did with much glee to be rid of the mold-mobile. I told them about the stink and she said it was probably some filter, though I'm surprised it wasn't due to another uneven hood. As you can imagine, I heard the popping sound on the way home. The next day my wife drove the car to pick up our child from school and heard the popping sound. It's now worse than before - popping and creaking sound almost every turn and when accelerating from a stopped position (stop sign or stop light). She called the service manager to report that it still wasn't fixed, still frustrated, ready to turn the car in and exchange it for something else. On September 8 a sales manager called her on the way to get our son from school and she didn't catch his name. She explained the story and he said he would call our sales guy and start looking for comparable replacements and we'll hear back tomorrow. He said now that it's been out so long they'll have to do an appraisal process on the car at the time of exchange. She explained it made this noise from the day after we bought it and should be in the five day timeline since all delays but that we're not paying a penny for an appraisal and expect a full value exhange. He said that's not how it works and the appraisal is just a formality they have to do. Four days later my wife sent an email to our sales guy asking for an update. She got no reply. On September 14, two days later, she called our sales guy John asking for an update. He was unaware of the events from 9/7 and forward as the sales manager had never contacted him about the replacement he had claimed to. The sales manager didn't talk to him about it all. She explained the situation and he said there should be no appraisal process and asked if she could come in tonight to get this resolved. He assured her that Carmax would take care of her and honor their word but only offered to try again to fix it. Now we're at six weeks. Bob Brown said they fixed it only to have the Carmax mechanic confirm again it wasn't fixed. Fortunately we have a better smelling loaner but it doesn't even have power windows. I'll write a follow-up with any resolution, but the point is rather clear. In the time since our purchase we've had two friends and family members looking to buy new cars who have asked how our experience was. We strongly suggested they avoid Carmax at all costs. John the sales guy has been great. It seems he is willing to go to bat for us. The service manager did escalate the issue to the sales manager as he had said he would. The sales manager and service department have been worthless if not outright deceptive since the sales manager claimed he was taking action he had not done at all and the service department claimed time and time again the issue was resolved when it wasn't. While most won't need to read all of this long review, those who do may avoid some grief and stress. And if you're in the Carmax system and they offer you a silver Hyundai loaner/rental...run from the mold, sign nothing! read more

I walked into this location, was warmly greeted by reception, I asked if I may browse the vehicles , he asked if he could help me find a car, I was looking specifically for a Kia Sorento. He directed me to the back of the lot. He also said someone will be out in 15 min. I had time to search 3 vehicles, still no one came. I saw only 3 associates on the lot, I assumed they were helping others, but still no one came to assist me in the purchase. After a while, I decided to leave and I saw 4 associates standing by reception chatting together. The gentleman at reception asked if I found what I was looking for. I asked questions about a car or two, still no associate offered to help. Not even an attempt to assist. I suppose since I was in a tank top and toting two toddlers they assumed I was just browsing. 7 years a customer and the financing department screwed me. You might find a very few good people at a store but overall the service is horrible. High interest rates for financing and cars seem to be overpriced. It's easy to miss important things if you don't know the complete in and outs and/or you trust the people you are with through the store or personally to assist you. I've taken responsibility for my part in the mistakes but carmax finance not only didn't want to help but when I asked for assistance on this situation I was hung up on many times and the first person I talked to after my car was hit and run gave me the run around told me I couldn't refinance and was extremely rude and short with me. The customer service was very poor except for the guy who sold me the car. I also was in Colorado last summer and in the middle of my vacation the rear view mirror fell off. There are lots of little things they claim to check and I'm not sure how thorough I believe it actually is. When I got my Nissan 4ish years ago I found an old cannabis blunt in the trunk. It has very high miles there offer was a bit lower then I expected but knew going in I was below water on it anyways. Al T was our sales man. He listened to what we were looking for. We wanted an SUV. But the kind was not available here in does Moines but was in k.c. and they were willing to ship it here if we wanted to look at it at no charge to us. We said we would look at what they had In inventory there. Unlike other dealer that said you qualify for this modle. Am asked us what price range we were looking for and what he showed us several SUVs in our range. And a wide range of options. After settling on a SUV he had us go through the paperwork. We had issues with our insurance after phone call and phone call All went above and beyond to help us. I will recommend Carmax to anyone. Great service. The salesman texted me at 5:30 on a Monday that it was ready to be test driven and wanted to know a time for us to come in. I texted immediately with a time for the next day with no reply....I texted 3 more times with no reply. The next day I texted, no reply. I tried to call and stayed on hold for 20 minutes before giving up. Hours later I received a phone call from a different salesman and set up the test drive. We liked the car and was going to write a personal check. The salesman asked me to pull up my bank account on my phone so he could make sure there were enough funds to cover the check. I wasn't comfortable AT ALL to be doing that and felt it very unprofessional and shady. We did not decide to buy from them and will not be coming back. read more

Worst car buying experience ever. We waited about 30-40 mins to be seen after our scheduled appointment time, which wasn't a huge deal because they sold us a car for a great deal with a trade in. They then called us the next day to say that we actually owed them 11,000 dollars more, and they will need us to come in and resign a new contract. They even have a clause in their contract that basically says "this is legally binding for you, but if we mess up we can get out of the contract". Absolutely absurd-- will NEVER come back. read more

I showed up at 5:15pm. I knew exactly what I wanted to look at. I told the guy at the front desk and he told me he would put me on the list of appointments. There were about 5 other employees standing behind him doing nothing. He stated that I could go ahead and take a look at the car and move the seat to be ready for a test drive. He said if you aren't back then I'll send the salesman out to you. Making me believe it wouldn't be long. After spending 20 minutes outside I went back inside. The same 6 employees standing around inside. I waited another 5-10minutes before walking to the desk. I said "with 6 of you standing around I can't get one of you to show me this car and take it out for a spin?" The guy at the front desk said "we are appointed only" there was 1 person schedule for 6pm. 2 people scheduled for 7pm and 1 person scheduled for 8pm. I walked out. It forced me to go to my next dealership that was a little farther way. However I walked in and received great service. I bought the car that night! I would never recommend car max to anyone. I had and continue to have an amazing experience with CarMax. After purchasing my first car from a Chevy dealership, I felt ripped off, used, and lied to. I went in to CarMax expecting the same type of treatment, and was wildly surprised! I knew exactly which car I wanted, and they worked with me to ensure I was making an informed decision (which I appreciate because I know very little about cars). The only hitch came when I tried to give them the check my bank had provided to pay for the car (I had a car loan thru my bank so they provided me check to fill out). CarMax couldn't use the check despite other dealerships having 0 problems. But, the manager (Matt Smith) and my sales associate (Christian) worked and found a solution! It took much longer then they expected it to take, and I ended up having it stay past closing (9pm), but no one made me feel bad about it or even hinted they were anything less then willing to help! The car did have some problems that it took a few months to resolve, but every time they never mentioned me paying for it, always provided me a rental, and gave me frequent updates about what was going on. The service department is fantastic and the business office is so friendly! I thoroughly appreciate everything they do for their customers and plan to buy future cars from them too! I had a fairly pleasant experience with CarMax. One thing that really didn't set well with me is I paid X amount of money for my vehicle and they didn't clean it AT ALL. The windows were filthy. The car was not vacuumed or cleaned at all. Very disappointed. My husband also purchased a car there the same week and the car was in the same condition, no sort of cleaning was done whatsoever. I've never had that issue at any other car dealer. They usually detail the car so it adds to the experience and excitement of getting a new vehicle. Ford dealership offered me a little over $2400 more so my selling experience was not that great. Very friendly staff however.

I wish there was a no star option. This Carmax has been one of the worst experiences in my life. My fiancé purchased a 2014 Nissan Versa in November, when spring came, she tried the AC but it was pushing out hot air. We went to a local auto shop and got a quote on what it was and they said the air compressor completely failed and has been for a while. So basically, Carmax sold us a broken car. We took it to carmax, all they did was put coolant, which we had tried at the auto shop, and when we addressed this issue, they acted like we didn't know what we were talking about. After continuously having problems with the AC, we called and they didn't offer to get us in the schedule and had to book us a week out. However, it wasn't until we made a complaint that they offered to fix her car. We turned it in on June 30th. They had to send it over to Nissan and didn't get it fixed until July 21st. During that time, they consistently told us "it'll be done tomorrow" for 3 to 4 weeks. This doesn't include how many arguments we had about what was wrong with the car and that we told them about this issue in March. As well as my fiancé and I having to call 5 times to get ahold of someone to get an update (because they failed to update us on the car). I had to call the corporate office to get a time and a date for when it will be done and to get someone to be urgent about getting the car done. Even then, corporate still had to call 5 times to get ahold of the them and was even more surprised how shitty we have been treated by the Carmax in Des Moines. After picking it up, Neil (one of the guys who works in the service center) argued with me and continued to tell me that it wasn't the air compressor and that before when they wasted our time with the coolant they were "looking for issues with the car and had to find a leak in order to continue further". He is a big fan of "I don't know" and "it's not in our hands". He rolls his eyes and makes me wait for his attention when I walked in. He also threatened me about the loaner car that they gave us for the time it was in the shop (mind you, it was only supposed to be in the shop for a week max) by saying "[your fiancé] should be good. Doesn't she have a loaner?" And I said "yes, but we would like to drive in our car and put gas in our car rather than a loaner car." And he goes on to say "well we didn't have to give her a car." And to top it all off, they gave us the car with no gas when they asked us to return the loaner car with a full tank. All in all, the same day we picked up the car from being fixed at Carmax is the same day we sold it. ... However, I will say that I bought a car through carmax during the time of this situation and I had a really good time with the salesman who sold me the car. I had a great experience here. This was my first time buying a car and they were very helpful and understanding through the whole process. There were some complications with paying but the issue was out of their hands and they still problem solved very effectively. They really care about your experience! read more
