I just flew in from New York last night to attend the race at Laguna Seca, and needed a barre class to shake some jet lag. I did some research before I got into California and emailed CarmelBarre prior to going to make sure the class wasn't full. Arianne emailed me almost right away and was super friendly! Arianne also taught the class and she was amazing. I did the 45 minute express class and we worked every second ! It was exactly what I needed . Best exercise I have ever done! In the past, I have primarily been a swimmer. I never dreamed that I would be in the company of such a great group of students and instructors taking classes 5 times a week that I really enjoy. Also, my rotator cuff injury has almost healed after 4 months of barre! That is really amazing! My injury was serious and had been bad for 18 months. I almost had surgery after 4 months of PT and 3 months of chiropractic therapy. I had the consult with a surgeon but put it off. In the mean time I tried barre to help with my balance and core strength, never thinking that it would also help my shoulder! I love doing this and it is not easy, but it is invigorating. Low impact with defined isometric movements done to music to keep your mind off the pain. Arianna and all of her instructors are great. They greet you with your name and a big smile every time you enter the studio. And, now that there are two studios, I can get to classes in 10 minutes either in Monterey or Carmel. read more

Any age, any shape, any size -- you see it all at Carmel Barre! I was apprehensive to start - didn't know "barre" or Pilate's, had limited yoga experience. Arianne, was welcoming and paid special attention to me during my first visits. Classmates were helpful as well. So easy to start -- don't have a yoga mat, no problem, they have loaners. You can even buy inexpensive gripper socks at the studio. The studios are conveniently located with easy parking, at big plus when hurrying to class. One of the best fitness "deals" around. You choose what level hand weights or no weights at all -- there is no judgment and no one is keeping score or plastering it on an overhead board. You challenge yourself and do what your body allows. During workouts Arianne will suggest modifications to make a particular movement more achievable. She also offers tips and reminders on proper positioning of the body and proper breathing. Every instructor is incredible and very knowledgeable. They make every move seem so easy and they show you modifications if necessary (which i needed every modification in the beginning) and yet still push you to YOUR limit! Of all the different forms of exercise out there, I find that I get the fastest (and most noticeable) results from barre. Until recently, there have been no dedicated barre studios in Carmel. But now Arianne has opened a studio in Carmel Rancho and I'm in heaven. The studio is clean, parking is no problem, and the classes are great. Arianne is everything a barre teacher should be. She is "hands on" (I appreciate having my alignment corrected), friendly, professional and clearly dedicated to what she does. I have taken barre classes in many different places and Arianne is right up there with the best. Her classes are hard but in a good way. The atmosphere is supportive rather than competitive. I had heard about barre for a long time, but hadn't taken a class. When I did, I was very happy! the workout is tough, challenging and I have seen improvement in my strength, as well as other activities (running, specifically). The instructors are awesome and helpful, they gently correct form or offer modifications when needed. My husband had a short term assignment in Pacific Grove, CA and I had the opportunity to visit him. I am a barre fanatic and was lucky enough to find Carmel Barre. I signed up for a class with an instructor named Rebecca. It was wonderful. I wish I could take her back to my home town. I absolutely love this place!!!!!! Every single instructor is amazing. They are so encouraging and really take time to come around and adjust you so the movement is just right and so you don't hurt yourself. I came into Carmel barre as a new student with very little to no barre experience, bad neck and shoulder problems, very little strength and not a lot of confidence in my body. In just a little over ONE week that has all changed I feel stronger, more confident and my body no longer hurts. The instructors were so welcoming and never made me feel like an underdog. I would recommend people of all levels to this studio. The instructors all teach very Similar which makes it so you can always count on a consistent workout. Also, the studio has lots of windows and feels very open and not claustrophobic. Last but not least they sell the CUTEST socks and tee shirts. Love this place. I found out Carmel Barre was opening in Monterey through facebook, and knew the first class was free so I went on their opening day to check it out. I'd never tried a barre class before and now I am hooked! I was floored by how challenging the workout is and how precise the teachers are able to direct each exercise. Arianne, the owner, is an excellent teacher and gives great corrections throughout the room and is very good at encouraging you through the end--when you feel like you couldn't possibly continue any longer--she has a unique ability to get you through. What I particularly like about the class is the very clear focus; it is really clear what muscles and muscle groups are working in each exercise and every day the class changes so you're not doing the exact same thing you did the day before. It has only been three weeks but I'm already noticing my body changing; muscles forming, and better posture. I even feel like I'm standing differently--more grounded and just stronger all around. I am really excited to continue these classes and am looking forward to more results! The other thing I want to mention is it seems like the barre community is very friendly and warm, not only that but all the women (and men!) who have gone to these classes regularly are all in such amazing shape! I still feel new to the Monterey area having moved her in January and honestly since that time have searched for a place to work out. There are many great places to work out and you can't be the scenery here simply for walking, hiking or riding your bike. However, I still really enjoy a workout that involves others, music, and doing things for my body that while I know how to do them (i.e. push-ups), I never do them independently. I went with some co-workers to a HIIT class and loved the people and the instructor (Staci). The studio is beautiful, modern, clean and uncluttered. I actually really liked the smell of the place when I walked in and I'm not sure if it's just a nice wood smell (it is not a major smell, subtle...like a spa) or what but it is consistent. I have since tried the barre classes and have gotten a workout that makes my muscles shake to failure. I think all the instructors are very clear and helpful and seem to genuinely like teaching their classes. This place feels like a place in which I could actually make friends and feel like part of a community, something that I have been searching for since arriving in the area (I moved to help take care of my sick dad who has since passed away and it has been challenging to be social for me). While I am not very good at classes yet, I don't feel judged. I feel we are all working at our own levels, supported by the teachers and the students alike.
