I feel I really needed to do this review because they haven't got one in about 2 1/2 years and not exactly accurate.. me and my family went there for a late dinner. The food was great and was pretty fast. The waitress was very nice and patient. Me and my mom got a steak sandwich it was a little undercooked. So we asked if they can cook it a little more. We were almost done our meal and it was almost closing time and she sent back the food. And they gave us brand new plates. Without extra cost and gave us 10% for the trouble. June 19, 2020 I wanted Greek food. Ordered chicken souvlaki. Rice was full of grease or butter, no lemon on rice or the chicken. I ordered a pita after and it came burnt. The waitress said the owner or Greek cook offered to redo another order. I asked for no peppers due to an allergy. The rice was full of peppers. They made another rice by the time we were ready to go. I was going to take it home but only wanted to exit by the end of our meal. I'm sorry it was so not a good Greek dining experience this visit. The visit before (2 weeks ago was amazing) it will probably be a long time before I return and that's alright for a 25.00 meal I'd expect it to be standard Greek. Sure, a couple of our meals were okay, but they don't make up for the rest of the dining experience. Fish & Chips are good, A nice light tempura like batter, not overly greasy, tasty fries. Senior meal of veal cutlets way okay. It's generous sized, comes with soup, garlic bread, and two sides, but it was overcooked and bland. Biggest issue with the meal was the service and a problem with one of our meals. Vegetarian options are very limited on the menu, and we asked specifically if the soup of the day had an meat. The waitress assured us that it did not so it was a surprise to take the first bite and find the soup had ham. The waitresses only reaction was, "huh, what do you know?" with no apology or offer of replacement. We then informed another waitstaff of the problem and met the same reaction. Finally, when we were at the cashier, we explained what happened and she went, "so you could taste the ham in the soup?" "no, lady, there were chunks of ham in the soup!" "oh, well now we know, there's ham in the soup." Again, complete indifference. No apology. No offer to take the uneaten soup off the bill. No offer for a replacement meal for the hungry diner. Upon entering the Carmel, it appears to be populated by two different types of people: those proudly wearing their war-torn lumber company caps and those taking fifteen seconds to get up from their seat. To avoid sounding crass, the Carmel is best described as "gastronomic bouillabaisse". It offers and tries to be a little of everything. There are two bars, one spackled in colorful bottles and the other made for dwarfs (the stools are two feet high). Country music drones out of hidden speakers. A dozen trees of stained faux oak cover every surface not draped in burgundy pleather. The menu is an impressive six-page witch's brew of Greek, Italian, and American stalwarts. My mother orders the calamari with a side of pita bread, while I brave a dish I haven't sampled in twenty years, Salisbury steak--the trademark and staple of TV dinners for a hundred years. Pinch me. For you illiterate hungry-men out there, Salisbury steak is not a burger without a bun. Though you may expect the "Salisbury" to be the namesake of a British monarch like sandwich or a German city like hamburger, Salisbury gets its name from a doctor whom is often considered the predecessor of Atkins. You know Atkins, the guy that thought gout was the price to pay for weight loss. Salisbury wanted to encourage a high protein, low carb diet, and his solution was a mince meat patty awash in gravy. That being said, Carmel offers the dish with a full side of French fries and garlic bread. Irony. The entrée is preceded with a salad starter, delivered 60 seconds after ordering. It instills me with a lot of confidence when a lazy collection of lettuce, cucumbers bits, and carrot shavings are offered with not one, but two Kraft brand ranch dressing packets. My mother orders two appetizers--calamari and pita bread. Here's the first bombshell: The pita is probably the best I've had so far, toasted with olive oil, sprinkled with herbs and served with a side of tzatziki. I can't even see my plate. It's covered corner to corner in fries, steamed vegetables and a perfectly cooked patty further swathed in sautéed mushrooms, onions, and gravy. My colon braces for the coming apocalypse. Oh yes, and the garlic bread served in its basket. Even as I mow down the fries, I notice the steak continues underneath the fries. This is not a steak; it's a Dutch pancake made of meat. I push the steamed nutrition aside...I need no roughage. No less than 30 seconds after typing that, my mother remarks, "no vegetables?" I don't answer as she picks the carrots off my plate. Meanwhile, I keep finding hidden food in my meal. As I cut off another piece of ground chuck, I find a wedge of melon. This is like a culinary Mandelbrot set; the more you zoom in, the more food you find. (Sigh...look it up... http://youtu.be/G_GBwuYuOOs) There's an inconsistent level of quality with the Carmel. This may be due to their intent to cover their bases, to appeal equally to the working men and the elderly. Entrees like the Salisbury steak showcase a level of value and workmanship that surpasses other work/travel restaurants I've been to (easily surpassing Hart Wheel and Barb's Place). It may explain why the Carmel has survived here for so long. Then it breaks that trend with a lazy salad starter. The desert menu proudly advertises such refined delicacies as pudding (just...PUDDING), and jell-o with whip cream...popular for those unable to chew. There's even a senior size reduction (because customer response demanded it). By the end, I've eaten so much, I'm sweating gravy. I refuse to admit defeat and force that last few fries and bite of bread, only for my mom to shove two wedges of pita on my plate. I can hear the pleather cushion under me buckle. Despite the lazy salad, the entrée was impressive. There's no panache or regality about it. It lacks any style in delivering a day's worth of starch and protein. I now have this overpowering urge to scale 500 yards of lumber or build a bathroom or something. Instead, I'm fated to sit in front of a PC, typing away as my body converts those calories into useless fat. At $13.95, this was a good value, especially considering that the plate weighed over four pounds. My stomach distends and stretches from the food. My back hurts. I thought the days of eating like this were behind me. I thought I had some measure of self control. It takes me fifteen seconds for me to stand up from my seat. Was served raw hamburger. When I confronted the waitress I was told they changed their seasonings. No seasoning makes meat raw, cold and rubbery last time I checked. She forgot to bring waters when they were ordered. The drinks were given to the wrong people at our table too, a diabetic was served regular soda although he ordered diet. They were irritated that the burger had to come off the bill, as they tried to serve me another type of sand which to replace the burger which I turned down. The cutlery was also dirty. We are traveling though Prince George and ate at Carmel Restaurant three times in three days. The prime rib buffet on Saturday night was amazing and really enjoyed the Sunday brunch buffet too. Food is fresh, seasoned well, and tasty. Tonight had a burger and delicious clam chowder. Was surprised that the Greek salad had no lettuce, but was still flavorful and full of vegetables. Went tonight and the only options were the buffet - 23.95, chicken cordon blue or veal at 20.95.because it is New Years Eve. Against better judgement we had the buffet, hoping it was better than the last time we had it (maybe a year ago). Unfortunately it was not. The prime rib was fair but the rest was sub par at best. The "homemade" desserts were nothing special. I specifically asked whether they used real whipped cream or cool whip type of topping and was told it was real. NOT. I could taste the oil in the cream puff. Don't eat the trifle.... For the second time found a hair in it..gross. The owner came and said he would take $10 off our bill. Wow! We could have had a much better meal at a different restaurant for less money. Will never go back. read more
