Came here to see Mechelle after reading all the awesome Yelp reviews about her (and also because I had purchased this groupon deal) and I'm so happy to say everyone was right about her. Mechelle is hands-down amazing-- she's honest, she listens to what you want and gives you a little bit of her input, and she's so much fun! I adore how quirky cool she is and she definitely has a talent with the way she cuts and colors hair. What I had done: my roots needed to be recolored to match the rest of my hair (I had the coloring done by someone else and my natural hair was about 3 inches out) and Mechelle matched the color perfectly. This weekend I went in to Salon Karma for a full highlight, cut, style and deep conditioner with Cassie. It was one of the best hair experiences I've had! The salon itself is tucked within Salon Republic but there was a nice girl at the front desk who directed me right to Salon Karma. The salon is adorable, very tranquil and peaceful considering the fact that it is overlooking a busy Sunset Blvd! They've got a prime view of the hills too which was perfect. Cassie was fantastic and professional from the moment I walked in. She asked me about my hair history and we discussed what I wanted to achieve in today's appointment. Cassie was very attentive and asked questions while also providing her professional advice for the best hair care, which i greatly appreciated! She clearly loves what she does and it shows! This review is for Cassie. I'm one of those people with hair down to my waist who only cuts it twice a year mostly because I'm lazy. (I did actually have a good cut and color a couple years ago in an effort to be better with my hair but laziness prevailed.) I'm new to the area and came in with a groupon hoping to discover my new go-to hairstylist. My experience was more like a logistical nightmare than anything else. I want to start out by saying that I left the salon after my haircut satisfied -- the cut was nice, the styling a bit odd for my hairtype, the conditioning treatment was pretty effective, but overall my hairstylist Celina was the only good aspect of the whole Salon Karma experience. From the sound of other reviews, it definitely seems like their lack of a receptionist is hurting their business. Except one review mentions calling in....? Girl, how did you get them on the phone!? I booked an appointment for a Tuesday, over a week in advance. A week before the appointment I wanted to cancel the appointment, so I called in. I got no answer, so I called back later that day. No answer. Over the course of 7 days I called 4 times, left 3 voicemail messages, emailed Carmen (the owner) twice and tried unsuccessfully to log in to their online system and cancel (the system glitched and lost my email address). Their cancellation policy stipulates that the offending customer pay the full price of the service ($200!!!!!) that they missed, but I had a friend coming in from out of town and I wasn't going to miss them for a silly haircut that could've been rescheduled easily a week in advance. So I bailed. I felt terrible. The hairstylist even called me 45 minutes into my (absent) haircut and asked if I was coming in. But this was even stupider -- she left a voicemail saying that she noticed I wasn't a first-time customer (??? wrong...I just moved in from New York...) and that I couldn't use my groupon (for first-time customers only). Now confused on top of angry, I didn't answer her message. Later that night (like 10pm...) she TEXTED me saying she was sorry that I couldn't come....except she messed up my name name "Hi Erika......" --- yeah that's not my name. Groupon has a terrible refund policy, so I re-booked under a fake name, email address and phone number. I came in a month later for my appointment with Celina. Aside from the fact that she was calling me by a fake name the whole time it was a great experience. I might have come back if the booking experience wasn't such a nightmare. They even offer you drinks (wine, hot chocolate, coffee, tea...) during your appointment and give you a 3 day spa pass. However, the haircut wasn't life-changing and for the full price ($90?) of the haircut I don't know if this is worth calling a staple. read more

A bit of background info: I had a terrible experience with someone coloring my hair and I swore that I would search high & low until I found the right person. Viola! Carmen is the real deal. She is the first Stylist to ever recommend color that compliments my personality and skin tone. Although it's pretty cool that she worked as a celebrity stylist - at the end of the day she made ME look like a star, and feel like the belle of the ball (you get the picture). She colored my hair so beautifully brown, I can't stop getting compliments on it, plus it is so professionally done it looks natural and beautiful and healthy. I have been a client of Carmen's for 5 years and the cuts she gives me always last so long and are so stylish that I can either blow dry or run out of the house. Carmen O. is hands down the most talented stylist I've ever been to. She truly understands how different hair types will lay and how they'll dry naturally. I went to her for a pretty drastic hair cut and I am beyond thrilled with her work. She cut probably 10 inches off - I went from mid-back length to having my hair hit just at the nape of my neck. I was worried about having to style my hair everyday, but Carmen cut it in such a way that I literally wash my hair and go to bed, or walk out the door, and it looks incredible - with virtually zero styling. I run a hair moisturizer/smoother through the ends and I'm off. She has a genius understanding of hair texture and dimension. To top it off -- she's incredibly kind and laidback - someone you'd want to be friends with. Best color ever. Every Time. I've taken my whole family to Carmen over the last 8 or more years, and she's so accurate with color, you can't even tell. You just look amazing. My twins were actors when they were younger, and so proud to call her their stylist! And the celebrity caliber treatment I get when she takes care of me is awesome. Worth the drive. I've made the mistake of going to other places in the interim when I had some excuse why I couldn't make it out to see Carmen, and regretted it every time. Carmen is the best hairdresser I've had anywhere anytime and that includes in London and Miami. She is the absolute best at cutting extensions. There are loads of people in this town that can put extensions in but very very few know how to cut them properly and generally end up completely messing them up.
