Comes a time in many men's lives when they hears the call of the old home town, and feel the passion of his ancestors start to well up inside him. Thus began the latest chapter in the life of Ed Carmody, born in Duluth, world traveler, grandson of some former scions of the early hospitality industry in Duluth. Ed's Irish immigrant grandparents built a mini-empire in Duluth in the late 1800s, starting a restaurant, acquiring hotels, and being a part of People's Brewing Co. a rather long-lived post prohibition beer company that lasted until 1957. Ed's genetic ambitions led him to create Carmody Irish Pub in Duluth, five years ago, add a Northshore branch, Carmody 61, and finally to add micro-brewing capability on site. Carmody's, at 308 East Superior Street in the heart of the "new" old downtown, opens daily at 3PM, has live music six nights a week, with 32 beers and 21 Irish whiskeys on hand in addition to his own micro-brews. Demand for the latter is causing him to double brewing output capacity this year. A believer in supporting local businesses as well as the locavore movement, Ed sources as much product locally as he is able to, and estimates that over 80% of the food products come from establishments within an hour of the Twin Ports. Carmody's food offerings include their takes on traditional bar food, with the addition of some Chicago favorites (one of Ed's major life stopping points), as well as an homage or two to Irish / UK specialties. Chicago style dishes include the "Maxwell Street Chicago Dog," dressed as one would find at hundreds of Chicago eateries, with mustard, cucumber, relish, peppers, tomato, and a dash of celery salt. Another Chicago legend on the menu is the Italian Beef sandwich, thin sliced roast beef slowly marinaded in a flavorful au jus, served on a fresh bakery roll and topped with mild or spicy giardiniera. Beef for the sandwich is sourced from Fraboni's on the range, and cooked at Carmody 61, which enjoys a larger kitchen and prep area than the Duluth outlet. A tribute to the cuisine of the UK and Ireland can be found in the bangers and mash, and his version of the Cornish pasty. If you're not familiar with the pasty, its a crimped, baked meat and vegetable pie, popularized by miners from the British Isles and Eastern Europe, who settled in the mining communities of Northern Michigan and Minnesota. The hand-held pie provided hearty fare for miner lunches. Ed says his version of the pasty has "Slavic" influences, rather than Cornish or Finnish. The pasty has become widely associated with the Finnish culture in Minnesota. Sausages at Carmody's are made from Ed's secret family recipes, built to the pub's specifications at Wrazidlo's Old World Meats in Duluth. Bread and rolls are an exclusive Carmody recipe baked by Duluth's Johnson's Bakery. Additional menu items include starters, sandwiches, wraps, pizza with some vegetarian friendly choices. The menu at the Two Harbors branch has different menu choices, including entrees and burgers. Taste experiences this visit included the pretzel appetizer with house made mustard, Italian Beef sandwich, and bangers with garlic mash. All were excellent. This was my least favorite stop on my Duluth breweries tour. The decor was dark and kind of dirty. The service wasn't great. Also, everything looked a little dirty so I didn't want to eat there, although my boyfriend had a hotdog that he said was very good (I think it had bacon and barbeque sauce on it). I personally would skip this one in the future, but my boyfriend said the beer was good and he would go back. read more

Tour stop #5. After 4 other breweries, we were feeling pretty happy. I needed a soaker so I ordered a Western hot dog. This was just what I needed! Crispy bacon on a hot dog, Genius! The beer was good. They have a very good selection and variety of their own house brews. We toured the brewery in the basement as well and I was surprised to see that it was only a step above the home brewers. I believe it was a 3 barrel system. It made me think "if only I had a bigger garage..." It was very interesting to see and learn the history of the place as well. I walked out of there with a growler of their Agnus Red Ale. This place deserves more attention from me in the future. I'll be coming here to grab a bite to eat next time I'm up. read more

We stopped in here impulsively and fell in love with the place! This pub/Brewery is full of life, character, and community. We loved the beer too! Definitely check out their brews... brewed in the basement. I give a brewery extra points if they can lure me away from my standard choices with something that I wouldn't usually get. I ended up with a pint of the Juniper Saison (something I'd usually not order a full pour of) and loved it. It was thick, full, and seemed unfiltered. Great flavor.. unique but not weird. My husband got the Rocktoberfest. Also not his usual order. The bartender was friendly, amiable, and helpful. We loved our experience there. Throw a dollar and learn the Irish history behind it. Came here on Saturday with a buddy of mine since Improv at Zeitgeist was sold out. I had an Angry Orchard Cider (slightly alcoholic) and it was good, while he had a non-alcoholic beer, which he said tasted like crap. We hung out here for a while, during which there was a lovely singer jamming out and I must say it was very entertaining. The pub wasn't overly packed, but it wasn't dead either. Definitely a lot of characters here, which made it interesting to just people-watch. I definitely enjoyed myself here. Cider was about 5.75, which isn't too bad. I'd say give this place a shot! read more

My wife and I stopped in here after dinner on our Duluth weekend trip over Thanksgiving. Overall I was very impressed. The place is moderate size with tall ceilings and a pretty convincing Irish Pub aesthetic. I wanted to stop in for the beer and I was not disappointed. I tried several of the house brews and was thoroughly impressed. The bar tender was very friendly and revealed that he is a homebrewer! We shot the breeze about brewing for a good while and I'm convinced that they know their stuff! They also have an extensive selection of Irish whiskeys. We were all able to carry a conversation without shouting so if there was music, it was low. The lights weren't too dim either so you could see the menu and the rest of the patrons seated nearby. We didn't order anything from the kitchen during our visit, but the menu seems pretty basic. Although my wife was getting bored with all the beer talk by the end of our drinks, I'd love to stop back in the next time we're in town to see what's on tap! read more

I must agree with Tony here -- If we lived in Duluth, I'm sure we'd be regulars here in no time. Carmody's was everything you want in a local bar and an Irish pub. The bar has character, from the dollar bills attached all over the ceiling to the materials on the walls. The staff was super friendly to us, taking us on a tour and everything. A mark of a good bar: you stay longer than you intended to, and you walk out knowing at least half of the staff members' names. We found out the brewmaster makes a special small batch experiment that goes online every Sunday afternoon. We're told it doesn't last long :-) The beer itself is excellent -- wonderfully flavorful and smooth. I was particularly fond of the Irish Red, which was sweeter than your average commercially mass-produced red, but not sugary -- it had that bold red flavor you'd like with great undertones of flavor and just enough hops. Really great beer. I would imagine that if we lived up there, I would quickly reach the point where the bar staff would stop asking what I wanted to drink. Sure we'll be back. Cheers. read more

This place is pretty authentic to what a real Irish Pub feels like - and I appreciate that. My next trip up north will definitely involve a stop here. Can't wait to come back. read more

Cheap drinks, good selection, great bartenders. Had fun at trivia night. However, they have these giant tables and chairs that make it hard to talk to anyone besides the person next to you, when combined with loud music. But the patrons seem nice, and it's a nice atmosphere. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday night during Blues Fest weekend, 7 pm or so. Well, what can I say. Disappointing at best. Depressing at worst. Only 3 customers were there besides me. I asked the Bartender for beer recommendations and, believe it or not, wouldn't recommend their own brewed beer. What's up with that? What a shame. Staff definitely would have rather been elsewhere. Disappointing. I decided to pass on the beer and choose another place. I give this place a 1 based on the depression I felt from the time I walked in to the time I left. Sorry for the strong words. The first time here was great. I love the atmosphere of this place. Met the owner and had a great time. The next time there we were having a great time. I was drinking Guinness and served in an imperial pint. All was excellent. Bartenders changed shifts. I ordered another Guinness and I was served only 16oz in an imperial pint and when I questioned where was the other 4 oz i was told " that is an extra $1.50" and then the bartender proceeded to pour water in a 16 oz pint and put next to mine to prove there was 16oz in there. His attitude was horrible. In all the times I have drank Guinness, I have never had a bartender do this. Completely turned me off to this place. read more

Went here for a beer and to check the place out. I wish I could have spent more time and eaten some food. I went there with a number of family members and everyone liked the place. Maybe it was a bad night, but the crowd seemed grungy, the bar was dirty and sticky, and the taps kept going out. When they changed them, the product tasted like CO2-infused crap. Rather than try it herself and experience the disgusting-ness for herself, the barwoman asked me if I drank that beer very often, because I "obviously" didn't recognize the flavor. read more

What a great joint. Very friendly patrons, lots of good beer on tap, and a pretty darn good approximation of an 'authentic' Irish pub. We had had a very busy day, a long drive, and once we landed at the Voyager Lakewalk Motel we only had enough energy for the short walk to the nearest pub. What a pleasant surprise we found at Carmody. The owner even had time to regale us with a few stories. Nice guy. It's a loud joint, the music that night won't be negotiating a contract anytime soon, but we sure had an enjoyable time. We'll be back and so should you. read more

Great pub with brewery and live music.

Carmody's is the place to go for my coworkers and me after our long bar shifts... We love the cheap drinks, cool service, and interesting environment that caters to all types. There is usually some sort of live music going on, though it might not be "good". They have lots of taps and bottles. Lately the "Chow Haul" has been parked out front frequently, and while I have never had the food, it sure smells good and deep-fried. I'm pretty sure this place is open every night until 2:00 AM, which is nice 'cuz in Duluth that is a rare find. Just be ready to hold your breath as you pass through the ever-present group of smokers parked right outside the door. read more

Stopped in here after dinner for drinks. The decor fit the theme well, and the wait staff was prompt and courteous. The beer selection was quite extensive. I didn't recognize that they had they're own brews, otherwise I would have gotten them, but instead drank Surly. They were out of a couple of beers my wife ordered from the menu, but she was eventually able to find a beer she wanted that they had available. The only real complaint is that it did not smell good at all...in fact, it smelled like body odor or stinky feet. Not sure if it was just another patron or what, but it was bad enough that even if we were hungry, I don't think we would have eaten. I'm sure it isn't an ongoing thing, but it left an impression on us. read more

Wow!! What a find! My wife and stumbled upon Carmodys Irish Pub and Brewing while visiting in Duluth. We always enjoy home brew, and this place has some fine home brews on tap. If you don't care for home brew, they have several other taps to choose from. Great bartenders, and food to boot. We will be back!! read more
