Family run business. Soft and tasty carnitas at a great price. It was my first time here and family were friendly and nice. I drove an hour to taste their taco carnitas and ended up buying 2 lbs to take home. The pig ears adds the flavor to the meat. Customers were friendly as well. Their prices are very reasonable including the soda so support good street food made by a loving family. I definitely will be back to try cheese carnitas next. Hands down THEE best tacos I've EVER had in my life! I'm so excited to get to share this review with you all. Came here on Saturday 02/24. I followed them on IG after seeing them on a show called I'll Have What Phil's Having. Phil Rosenthal is the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond.... check out the episode titled Los Angeles on Netflix and you'll see what I'm talking about.... Anyways, we drove from the Central Coast to LA in search of these magic tacos. I arrived at 61 St & Avalon. No taco truck in sight. We circle the surrounding area for a good 30min before I ask a random guy crossing the street if he knows where the taco truck is located....he says he is with them. Taco Truck is in Compton location today but they were selling tacos in a front patio. Welcomed me to park the car across the street and come on in.... What happens next will go down in history as the best taco experience I've ever had in my life. I'm secretly hoping nothing will ever top it. Insert wink here. We park the car and cross the street to a home with a large black patio barred fence. There's no doubt we are right smack in downtown LA. We get ushered in to this rundown front patio area. There's some old chairs and a table that's just about falling apart. No silverware, no fancy plates, no menu..... and there sitting across the way is the famous Senor Momo and his sons. The smell of carnitas permeated the air. The carnitas were stored in metal tubs covered by black bags. Yup, it's about to get EPIC!!!!!! We are warmly greeted. We're newbies. They can see that a mile away. Nonetheless, we were welcomed and treated like family. I explained our road trip or come find them and they quickly shift gears and layed out the red carpet. You would think we were celebrities the way they treated us. These guys are top notch professionals! Tradesman of delicious meats! The son tells us he is going to give us a bit of everything they got so we can get a good taste of what they offer. What comes next is life changing in my prior knowledge of tacos... Taco #1 is a cueritos taco. Pork skins slowly cooked in lard for hours until it's melt in your mouth delicious. Two regular sized tortillas hold all that gold! They served the tacos with pickled carrots and jalapeños. They also have a house salsa that's super spicy. Taco #2 is a buche taco (pork stomach). Again, out of this world amazing! The taste and texture is perfection wrapped in two tortillas! Taco #3 is a taco revuelto or mixed taco. This has the best of everything they offer mixed into one; a bit of cueritos,buche, and lomo. Taco #4 is a lomo taco. This is your classic carnitas taco.pork shoulder slowly cooked to perfection. The herbs and spices are out of this world! To wrap it up, our visit to Carnitas El Momo was top notch. I can't wait to go back! It quickly got busy, people started flooding the patio. They know it's good stuff. They are seasoned customers, knowing exactly how to order so the line moves smoothly. Mr. Momo is at the helm. Personally welcoming all his customers. This is a humble family who loves what they do. It's evident they care about the food they serve and take pride in their work! I was so impressed! I hate carnitas made in the U.S.A. First and foremost because almost everyone is lazy about doing carnitas. Boiling the pork before braising. Are you kidding me. These guys get it!!! The only way to make carnitas is in the style of Mr. Romulo "Momo" Acosta. Recent winner of "Best in Show" at L.A. Taco Madness 2014 on April 20th. They were also recently featured on "Primera Edicion" on Univision Channel 34 Los Angeles (Spanish Speaking TV Station). Finally got to taste carnitas el momo acosta and WoW! Aporkalypse tacos are heaven on a plate! So moist and tender. Loved every flavorful bite. The staff was super friendly and the service was fast. It was a bit tricky to find it initially and it's a little pricier per taco, but you absolutely cannot beat the quality of these carnitas. Absolutely unreal flavor, and huge quantity of meat. This is a hole in the wall that packs as big of a punch as any taco Ive had. Theirs also packs a nice kick as well and compliments each cut of carnitas. I wanted to say something the tacos were good and I would recommend going there for the food but I ordered food not their attitude my dad went there and he wanted carnitas and surtida and they said they didn't have any carnitas or surtida. Then when another girl came she wanted the exact same thing my dad wanted ,then they wanted to say they did but my dad was there and they looked at my dad with guilt and it's been the second time . If you've been eating carnitas anywhere else, you've been living your life the wrong way. I ate here in the Fashion District (apparently they're there Wednesdays only), in a small parking lot just east of Stanford on 12th Street. The tacos were incredible, especially with the red salsa. I recommend getting the mix (it has some skin and stomach in there); the skin especially adds an extra layer of umami that brings the rest of the pork together in a beautiful way. The guy said they cook the carnitas for three hours, and it shows in how moist and tender they turn out. There's only the one thing on the menu, but if you're into carnitas, this place is worth seeking out. read more
