the front desk staff at the Pinehurst location are terrible. I show up for my appointment on time and check in. 40 minutes later I have not been called back so I ask the front if there is a reason like behind. I was told it's a two hour wait, ok, then why am I here early! They kept repeating so I stated that I will not be back. I've been going to this provider for the last year and nothing has improved. The doctors are great but 1. their patient portal is so inadequate 2. It's hard to reach someone for an appointment 3. the patient accounts seem to not understand billing and you need to reach a billing processor 4. their offices procedures for check in and out is ridiculous in this 2026 (stuck in 1990's) 5. the billing department will go back and bill you a year later for something not covered or exceeding the established insurance practices. I agree with others here that CEA needs some improvement but I never have had to wait longer than 15-20 minutes for my appt. i very recently had cataract surgery, and the staff went out of their way to make sure i felt comfortable and confident. They all were very professional. Their support staff ( such as pharmacy reps returning phone calls) ... very much needs oversight and improvement. Everything takes so long here. Typically a 1 hour wait for the appointment time set. It's been longer. Doctors are good, but the overall management need attention Staff are frustrated and tend to get very snippy if you complain. The patient portal seems ineffective. Brought my mom for a consultation. The wait time here is flat disgusting. Right when there is hope to get seen, you get put into a waiting room...and then another...and then another. It's massively disrespectful to presume that patients have nothing going on and can commit to 5 hours here. Spend money on consultants to help you get more efficient. This is awful. I cannot begin to describe my disappointment in the way patients are treated at Carolina Eye Associates. They are herded like cattle from one waiting room to the next, ignored as slovenly staff saunter by, giggling and chatting among themselves. Since when are ratty t-shirts and worn-out sweatpants acceptable work attire? When I had the temerity to question scheduling that resulted in 2+ hour wait times, I was told by a tech that, basically, they (Carolina Eye Associates) are the only game in town for retina treatment, and I could take it or leave it. I received a follow up lecture that dripped with condescension and arrogance from the physician. When my 89-year-old mother said that such long waits weren't so bad if you're relatively young and don't have other heath issues that you're contending with, the physician's reply was "Do you see any patients like that in my waiting room?" Dismissive. Insensitive. Arrogant. She told us that an alternative we could consider is driving up to Duke for treatment. That's exactly what I intend to do. read more

Allen Sharpe is an amazing doctor. I couldn't have gotten anyone better. He removed my cataracts, corrected my astigmatisms with lasers as well as replaced my lens with toric lens. I can see far away and close up. Its so amazing not to have to wear glasses. Thank you Dr. Sharpe read more

I had same-day cataract surgery at Southern Pines. My experience was great. Dr. Garris's expertise was much appreciated. He was able to bring my vision to 20/20, which is WAY better than I ever had with corrective lenses. My follow-up with Dr Throneburg was equally amazing. Both doctors were efficient and professional. The staff was also professional and courteous. I'm surprised by the number of reviews that expressed dissatisfaction at the wait times because the scheduling staff CLEARLY explains that if you opt for same-day surgery, you will be there all day. For me, it was worth the wait! The gift of sight is precious and miraculous. I guess the wait time is a matter of perspective. read more

After reading the reviews of the long in office wait time, I figured I'm a patient person, I would bring a book and relax before they called me in. First let me say, I was to be a new patient and waited a month for this appointment. I received a letter in the mail and a phone call Friday to confirm my 3:05 appointment on Monday. I was dropped off because it was recommended I shouldn't drive after my eyes were dilated. I checked in, sat down and then was called back to the desk. The receptionist said that my appointment time was changed (apparently to an earlier time) that they sent me a letter and called me to let me know. I received neither with a new time. The doctor had already left the office so they told me the next available appointment was not for another month. Are you kidding me? I obviously will not be returning nor will my husband become a patient of this poorly run office. read more

While the eye care is exceptionally good......the admin staff and receptionists are HORRIBLE !!! There is NO EXCUSE for an over 2 hour wait too be seen. I had a 9 AM appt, and wasn't even brought back until after 11 AM. The receptionist didnt seem to care. AND.....When I complained to the Administrator of this patient mill, She informed me that I could no longer be a patient there. (Been with them since 2009) They made me miss an important orthopedic Appt, and THAT doctors office fined me 200 bucks for failing to show up on time.....Really. Dr. Sitterson replaced the lens in my right eye and eighteen months later, I still have "Double-Vision"! Several return trips to Carolina Eye in Pinehurst brought no relief from the vision problems caused by Dr. Sitterson. I am being treated at Duke and they are scheduling an appointment with a surgeon to see if the damage can be repaired. Carolina Eye Associates may enjoy a good name in the field of eye care, but they turned a slightly less-than-perfect eye into an unusable part of my body! read more

This place is an absolute cattle call herding operation. The waiting rooms (you are shifting from waiting room to testing rooms to waiting room...) are filled with numerous patients with what appears to be no practical rhyme or reason. I unfortunately experienced an retinal vein occlusion in my right eye and went to my trusted optometrist. She did multiple tests and referred me to Carolina Eye in Southern Pines. They have an extremely professional staff that is also very friendly. They treat everyone respectfully and are focused on helping you while keeping you comfortable. After 2 visits for treatment I can see a positive change and am really impressed with their service. I definitely recommend them. read more

The ophthalmologists know their stuff. It goes down hill -- fast and far -- from there. The place is so jammed full of people that there is no doubt in my mind that should a fire erupt, it would not go well. Moreover, the waiting -- and I do mean "waiting" area is so jammed with people that the air is heavy with body stink. In my opinion, it is unhealthy to breathe. I was at Carolina Eye for cataract surgery. While preparing for the surgery, the nurses could not find a vein for the iv.,which was necessary. Finally the anesthesiologist found a vein in my hand. I could tell by his body language he wasn't pleased But, he was able to get the iv started. Dr. Sharpe performed the surgery and everything turned out well. Terrible service. Appointment set for 7:10am, called back over and hour later for a pressure check. Then asked to sit in waiting room again! Still sitting here as I write this review. I am not sure if I will be out of here before 9am, it doesn't look like it. I am on target to wait over 2 hours for a 3minute review. This is so sad. The reviews span years on this site and all say the same thing. Historically long wait times. Do not come here. I can her three days ago for an urgent issue and waited over 2 hours just to be seen. Carolina Eye Assoc. in Pinehurst, NC performed surgery on my Lt eye retina in November 2023 to fix a hole they informed me found during an annual examination. It was a very painful ordeal and was not given any specific instructions after the surgery that would help alleviate the pain. I was scheduled for a follow up apt six weeks later ln Jan 2024 and was informed I have another hole in my retina in the same eye. This has left me confused, I question whether the initial surgery was done correctly and how a second hole could have developed over a period of six weeks. read more

Horrible, just horrible. In more than 10 appts i have never gotten out of there in under 2 hours. They are the most messed up organization to work with. It takes forever to get an appt, forever to see a Dr for a 10 min appt., forever to check out. I just end up walking out more than half the time. The Dr. I saw told me he was board Certified, yet the printed literature in his exam room read, quote, "Board-Eligible" I replied that if that's the case, then the liters about your qualifications need to be updated, especially in your own office Carolina Eye, Greensboro, NC. Online, credentials are still posted as "Board-Eligible" if, this info is also incorrect, it should be updated. The assistant who made data-entries as the eye doctor spoke his observations. I am filing a formal complaint against this place for poisoning me with fentanyl. I am a VA patient transferred here for cataract surgery . My record shows and I made it abundantly clear that I have a serious allergy to fentanyl and other narcotics. Nonetheless they shot me up with fentanyl causing a life threatening situation. Very long wait, staff for Dr Haddad very rude, Dr. Haddad gave injections even when I didn't need it in right eye and lied about my insurance and how they will pay. Switched to Dr. Almoney and she was very rude no compassion for my concerns at all. I felt like I was a bother to her. When she walked in the first thing she said "why are you here?" No introductions, smiles, just rudness! She also asked my husband if he was videotaping, because he was looking at his cell phone! OMG! He was just looking at his phone bc he was bored after 2 hours of wait time! I will never go back to that machine factory again! The worst experience I EVER had. read more

Long wait times, not good advise from doctors, the only thing I can say that is nice about this place is the outside of it.

Every appointment I've scheduled I've had to wait hours beyond the scheduled appointment, the do not value your time at all. I finally walked out of my daughter's last appointment after they called to move up our appointment to an earlier time and we still sat there for an hour past her previous scheduled appointment. It's ridiculous that they can't schedule any better than that. I will not return and do not recommend this establishment. read more

I have to say the eye professional were very competent but to have a 90year old couple wait 3 hours for an eye exam seems inhumane. MY first impression with Carolina Eye was the friendly staff and how quickly they handled my needs. I met with each individual and was treated with courteous and professionalism. I needed to schedule surgery for Feb. 2, 2022 and met with Dr. Jeffrey White. He addressed my needs and concerns and assured me this problem could be taken care of. I have nothing but praise for Dr. White and his staff. My surgery was a success and I'm thrilled with results, no pain at all and minimum swelling. I walked out on my second appointment today to confirm lasik surgery. I was scheduled for 9:30am for a consult with two doctors. I walked out of the appointment at 11:45am not having seen either doctor and offered no indication of when my turn would arrive. That is after being moved around the building in various waiting rooms and exam rooms like a marble with nothing tangible occurring. I guess they feel like the movement distracts you from the screwed up wait time. Unfortunately, I have already invested just under $200 and a morning for the initial consult / exam. I applaud capitalism but their process is disrespectful and boarder line abusive. I will not be back.
