This was a little shop with lots of variety of house made solid chocolate. Carol was very accommodating and helpful when deciding what to order. My thoughts on each item I had are below. Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Meltaway ($2.25) - This was essentially a peanut butter cup. I thought it was just okay, lacked peanut butter flavor. Kokoleka 55% Single Origin Dark Mango Meltaway ($2.25) - This was similar to the peanut butter meltaway, but just with a mango flavor. I initially thought it was going to be a mango filling, but that was not the case. Regardless, it was pleasant and balanced well with the chocolate. Kokoleka Dark 55% Single Origin Banana Ganache Truffle ($1.20) - Again, I thought this was going to be filled with a banana filling, but it was not. This was probably my favorite. The chocolate was delicate, and the banana flavoring just enhanced that. Kokoleka Dark 55% Single Origin Cabernet Sauvignon Ganache ($1.40) - This was my least favorite. I just did not care for the wine taste here. Madagascar Chocolate 36% Single Origin Sea Salt Caramel ($1.60) - The caramel chocolate log was appetizing. I really enjoyed this type of chocolate. I've been to Carols chocolate 3-4 times and have always had a good experience-I found all the people working the counter to be knowledgeable and friendly. What keeps me coming back is the truly excellent chocolate-I love that they source chocolate from all over the world. Extremely delicious chocolate, extremely pleasant owners. So far I have tried chocolates from Ghana, Indonesia, and Madagascar, but there are many more countries represented here. Each has a unique taste, some have a chocolate ganache, others fruit creams, others solid chocolate. This is what Godiva should taste like, but sadly no longer does. Many of the chocolates are under $1 a piece so it can fit in everyone's budget. Carol and Tony are very nice people also, so it makes it even better. read more

Nice enough shop, chocolates are very good but perhaps not wonderful so only four stars. Owner makes her own candies from top grade imported chocolate. She told me that each chocolate was "single source" - from a particular country or region. A nice idea but not something that helps me - I don't have that fine a palate. read more

There aren't a lot of chocolate stores that aren't branded. Came across this gem by walking down the infamous division street. Upon entering the store, we were greeted by tony one of the co owners of the store. Tony gave us a little tour of what kind of chocolates the stores had. The painting the store displayed are made by chocolate!! How awesome?! It's amazing. And the selection of chocolates is quite diverse. The chocolates are so light and creamy, but not all all artificial. My favorite would be the strawberry, mango, lemon white chocolate mix, and hazelnut. Just bought some dark chocolate and I cannot wait to dig in! If you're looking for a gourmet chocolate store, you have hit the jackpot! read more

Just took a stroll downtown... looking for a different candy store (for the wife) and I stumble upon this place. I think they just opened so they're still setting up the decor but... the chocolate is FANTASTIC. The wife will be very pleased. I believe the owner said they specialize in chocolates from different regions. I got 1/2lb of their darkest chocolates from Mexico & Dominican Republic for a reasonable $11. She is passionate about her chocolate and will educate you while offering you samples in her beautiful chocolate shop. Although it is a bit pricey, it is worth it. Nothing like a beautiful chocolate shop, kept by a shop-keep that clearly LOVES her job! She is truly a master, and not only does she know it, but she has much pride. Visited 3 times in the past couple months. Good chocolate is the perfect dessert after a fine meal at one of Somerville's many incredible restaurants. Carol cornered the market here in town. At first glance, the shop seems rather simple with an average amount of different choices. After getting a full education on the many different chocolates from all over the world, you realize the attention to quality is what makes this place truly special. I tend to go for the caramels. Love the Tanzania dark with scotch caramel filling. The praline crunch filled pieces are truly out of this world. A special owners recipe that is exquisite! Speaking of the owner, Carol is at the shop quite frequently and is so kind and friendly. She is passionate about creating high quality delicious chocolates. She also creates one of a kind, 100% edible chocolate paintings which are beautiful. Yes, the chocolate is much more expensive than your major brand store bought candy. However, each piece of Carol's chocolate is made of the highest quality ingredients available, are carefully molded and presented with perfection. Amazing Chocolate - Unnecessary and Annoying wait I LOVE the chocolate, which is pricey, but the quality justifies the price. Carol, the shopkeeper is very informative and will talk to you for hours. You can not find a better chocolate maker in the county, maybe even the state. Customer service however.. well.. Carol is very nice and informative when she is taking care of YOU, but I always have to wait 20 minutes to buy chocolate (this is for a very short line). She average 15 minutes per person to buy what is a small handful of chocolate. This would not be a terribly big deal, except that the last time I was there to purchase a gift for my husband with my baby who does not have tolerance for waiting. But what was more annoying, the customer in front of us was busy having a conversation among themselves about what they wanted. We could have easily been helped or at least acknowledged, but we were ignored, while my daughter got fussier and fussier. She was totally unmanageable by the time we were given the time of day. In order for me to keep shopping there, the store has to be empty when I walk by, or the line needs to move a little faster, otherwise I find the experience a great big hassle. read more

if you think hershey's chocolate is the best thing ever, you're in for a rude awakening... go to Carol's to get schooled on real people chocolate. you know, the kind that's so luscious and flavorful that you'll really feel like you've had a treat, without eating an entire pound of crap. no, seriously... you won't find weirdo waxes and preservatives here. nope. only high-quality ingredients and single-sourced chocolates from around the world. from creative fillings (think banana, pinot noir, praline, raspberry lemonade) to creative confections (OMG the meltaways!), there's something for just about any palate at Carol's. She even had me digging the white chocolate, which i'd previously written off as sugared wax. for the record, it's delicious. really. shopping at Carol's is an experience in itself. we wandered into the shop after a nice thai dinner at Origin's - the storefront looked inviting and there were some other shoppers inside, though i'm almost positive it was later than the posted closing time. Carol was running the show herself, and she really took her time with each group of shoppers. we waited patiently, eyeing our options, the artwork around the store, and the chocolate paintings and listening in on the knowledge Carol was dropping on the shoppers ahead of us. she generously offered up samples of various goodies, and was patient with everyone's questions. as indecisive as i am, and as tasty as everything was, i wanted two of everything. luckily, my bank account and my waist line reminded me that this would be a bad idea! Carol's is definitely not cheap- but nothing that's great quality ever is. These ain't your dollar-store chalky chocolates. the $$ is worth it- trust. while picking out a few after-dinner treats and some goodies to bring home to family members, we learned that Carol's offers an array of chocolate classes.... wine pairings, chocolate tastings, and even classes on working with chocolate. how cool is that?! custom group classes are available too, and i imagine they'd be super fun for a wedding party or birthday. the fact that Carol's is right in the center of downtown somerville is fabulous... make reservations for dinner at one of the area resto's and finish the evening with a class or just a quick stop into Carol's for a sweet treat. I happened to come in at a time when the owner was there and she was incredibly generous with her knowledge and with a passion that is revealed in her very delicious treats. Once you come in you want to try everything! I pass by many times a week so I stop to try different chocolates. The owner has been there most of the times I stopped by and she is really nice. She let me try a delicious Pinot Noir flavor filled dark chocolate that blew my mind, and also a banana filling milk chocolate. I don't think I'm ever having a Hershey's bar again. The price is higher than buying a regular chocolate, BUT THAT IS NOT REGULAR CHOCOLATE. It is quite amazing. Here you pay the right price for quality. read more

These chocolates are amazing! They are high quality and a lot of love and care are put into each piece. The individual pieces usually go for about $35/lb, but there are always new and delicious creations being made to keep things interesting. There's a good mixture of dark and milk chocolates, though I do prefer dark. A popular filling would be praline which gives the chocolate a nice crunch and there are usually some fruity fillings (love the raspberry). A new addition is the hot chocolate which is small but full of flavor and it is not too thick but it is pretty creamy. Theres also the crack pops which are giant balls of praline dipped in chocolate and are put on a stick, and I get it every time. Carol and her staff are all very nice, knowledgable, and friendly. read more
