Having recently relocated to the big city of Wooster, OH from the small town of Charlotte, NC I was a bit worried that there wouldn't be any comparable trails close by. Ohio's reputation had preceded it in my mind as a mostly flat, cornfield state. This park left me pleasantly surprised. Primary activities here would include hiking, trail running and walking. There are over 10 miles of unique trails, including almost 1 mile of paved, ADA accessible trails. There are three separate entrances: Education Area, Main and Kenwood all located along Silver Road. The park snakes around and behind several pieces of private property which, who knows, could end up being part of the park some day. There are elevations ranging some one to two hundred feet on single stretches of trail. You can easily climb 1,000 ft on a 5-6 mile run or hike here. Be prepared for rocks, roots, mud, and stream crossings. In winter, you can especially expect the mud and occasional ice and snow buildup. Several areas have low boardwalks and wooden split trunks for extra traction but many of the stream crossings will find you scrambling on large rocks and possibly with wet feet. It all makes for a fantastic outdoor experience and it's totally free of charge. I'm psyched to call this park my new running home and to be able to get out here on a weekly basis with the local group!

There is a board before you enter the woods that tells you about the trails so you can choose one that is right for you and your family. The trails are well marked!! There is one large loop around the main lake, a smaller loop around another lake towards the back, and a trail off the main lake that meanders around the woods for awhile. I got in 3 miles and enjoyed every second of it. Lots of different scenery, birds, and several fishermen enjoying one of the first warm spring days. I will be back!

Around the main lake path there a few mowed offshoots that don't seemingly go anywhere. Unless they did, but with no park map available it was difficult to tell. I tried to make the best of it. There is a multitude of opportunities to walk in the woods, however, if you are really just looking to put some miles on, there's an excellent paved path that circles the field. One of the remarkable benefits is that it has public bathrooms that are quite clean and well-maintained. You don't often find that on most trails. of course, one of the primary highlights of Freer Field in general is Candy Cane Lane during the Christmas season. For this period of time, the entirety of one of the trail loops is completely decorated for Christmas with beautiful lights.

I did not know it even had a park, until my local friend told me about it & we met up there. 2. It is HARD to find for a first time. If you just put in freer field it takes you to an open field.. the park is actually across that big field... there's actually a big white barn or school? you can put in your Maps or Nav & it'll take you basically right to it. But trying to find it without knowing those places names, very hard. I only found it because she sent me her location. Overall nice park though. Small enough to always see your kids & to be full fenced in! Super bright colored playground sets right next to it, but they said it was only for the school. Which was a bummer because the public one was brown & that one really caught the kids' attention & wanted to play there but couldn't.

Here's the deal: you are only fifty-odd paces from a busy highway, right next to a bunch of huge industrial yards, down a rutted gravel road, and there is this nagging voice in the back of your noggin yelling, "Run! This is a trap! You are at least one United State away from ANY trout fishing!" Don't listen to THAT voice, listen to me, your trusted Yelp Buddy. You will not be sorry you did. The state did a survey some twenty years ago, and found some nice streams that could, just maybe, support trout. One of these was Apple Creek, running east to west just south of Wooster. They didn't want to invest in a long shot, so the good and great folks at Trout Unlimited stepped up, bought some trout, and started a-stocking. There were a few lean years in there, but now? Boy Howdy! This is an amazing little (two mile) stretch of water. So, all I ask in return for unearthing this rare gem for you is this: practice catch and release. Revel in the experience, then put those beauties back so they can grow, and flourish, and be caught by some other guy or gal. You won't need a huge stick; I routinely cast a three-weight. Nymphs are a hot item year-round, but dry is the way to go when the insects are buzz-bombing you on the short walk from the parking lot to the stream. Oh, and pick up your trash, and a few items that were washed down in the many floods this area experiences. Thanks. Tight lines.

Even though it's a bit of a drive, this is my go-to place for canoeing and kayaking…read more It's just SO cheap compared to all the places further north, which are double or triple the price for less time on the river. We take the 14 mile trip, which essentially works itself out for $25 a person. The canoes and kayaks are a little older, the vans are older, they might not clean the life jackets super often, but it's a kickass time! But honestly, who cares! You're going to get dirty and sweaty canoeing or kayaking down the river. You really cannot beat the price for the experience. There's a lot less litter on the river compared to when I've went further north, less cars, and you are surrounded by corn fields. The river is simply beautiful and relaxing. It depends on the weekend whether or not there will be a lot of people - not many people do the 14 mile trip, so the first 7 miles of that are peaceful. After you hit the 7 mile mark, there tends to be a lot more people, as that's what most people take. 14 miles takes around 4-5 hours (or 6, depends on how much or little you're paddling, speed of the river, etc) , and 7 miles takes about half that. They also aren't strict at all on what you can bring/drink on the river, or if you need to stop, or anything else. In addition, if you do flip, the water level is 3 feet at most along the river. Just make sure to call ahead if it has been raining recently. I would recommend taking a trip out here out to the middle of nowhere to spend a summer day. It's a ton of fun and a good way to build teamwork trying not to flip a canoe or kayak.
