Husband and I saw this restaurant during a pie special on PBS and decided to visit for dinner tonight. We both ordered the hot roast beef sandwich and were very pleased. The gravy is a bit peppery but very delicious and nothing about this meal was out of a can. The mashed potatoes were real and whipped to perfection. The medium sliced roast beef was juicy and flavorful and the bread it was served on soft homemade bread. We could have shared since there was enough leftovers to make another full meal but we were too full to enjoy our pie there and got it to go. We also scored some of the amazing house made cinnamon rolls for breakfast tomorrow. Hey are huge and look delicious as well. Service was top notch and fast. It's a bigger than expected place so we were also seated rather quickly also. We will be back for sure! read more

Dined here during the pandemic and they are practicing social distancing by seating people apart in the restaurant. Masks were optional but i chose to wear one to my table. I had the chicken fried chicken with glazed carrots and a baked potato. My husband had the smoked sausage with baked beans and potato salad. We both loved our meals. Definitely recommend. The homemade bread they bring you before the meal is freshly made and served warm. It's served with cinnamon butter. Delicious. Dessert was banana cream pie with whipped cream. We were in Kansas visiting family and we alway spend some time in Yoder. It's a Amish enclave and they have a restaurant. Their food is pretty basic but I must say it tasted pretty good. I had the fried chicken dinner my bride had the turkey cobb, that also looked pretty good and my SIL had the hot roast beef sandwich and that looked pretty good as well. It's good wholesome food so if you're near Hutchison Ks. Give them a look. Come early, because the place fills up pretty quick. read more

I would give this restaurant a very strong four! We just happened to stop in here as we were driving away from the Kansas State fair to get a bit of lunch. The service was friendly, it was efficient, and the food is really good! Especially standing out for me, because I have a huge sweet tooth, was the huge cinnamon roll that was made fresh! I guess my only downside would be that the spices in the food could be a little bit more, it was a bit bland... The Carriage Crossing is a great place for family style dining! They even have a $14.95 per person Family Style / all you can eat choice... great value for full service dining. Service is good, prices are reasonable for what you get. We love the Chicken Fried Steak... all dinners come with two sides... substituting for a side salad +$2. No trip to Wichita, Kansas is complete for us without a stop in Yoder at the Carriage Crossing. Set in this small Amish community, the restaurant is clean and neat, with a very folksy, down home feel. The attached gift shop is reminiscent of a smaller version Cracker Barrel gift shop. The 10 of us, with no reservation (not sure if they even accept them), were seated after a very short wait. Drink and appetizer orders were taken almost as soon as we sat down. The fried okra appetizer is a huge bowl full and reminded me of the okra my mom made when I was a kid in NC. It comes with ranch on the side. Know in advance because this restaurant is in an Amish community, if you're expecting beer or other spirit drinks before or with dinner you might be disappointed; they don't serve either. The food and desserts more than make up for any minor inconvenience the lack of spirits might cause. For the most part all the food, desserts and pastries are homemade. We decided to order family style, which means the menu and price were fixed....fried chicken and roast beef with all the expected sides, including homemade bread with cinnamon butter, REAL mashed potatoes, two kinds of gravy, along with green beans and corn. Pretty sure the beans and corn were out of a can, but everything else was scratch made and absolutely delicious. Everything was served as a family size bowl or platter and seconds are available, but you won't need them. It's enough food for a small army. The chicken was well battered, moist on the inside, but still light and crispy. The roast beef was sliced to just the right thickness, juicy and slathered in rich brown gravy. The potatoes were just how I love them...smashed with peels on and so creamy. Toward the end of the meal, you're provided a pie card with the list of all the homemade pies they have available for dessert, which is included in the price of the meal. Our table had the cherry, peach with pecans, chocolate cream, coconut cream, peanut butter, and coconut meringue. There wasn't a crumb left on anyone's plate. We left well stuffed and fully satisfied. There is just nowhere else, outside your mom or grandma's kitchen, where you could get a meal like this for this price. I forgot to mention they even account for the appetites of your small ones...charging $1 per year of age. The only down side to the experience is they won't allow you to take the leftovers home. Even without ordering seconds, we had leftovers. When we asked, our waiter Brock said they aren't allowed to package leftovers in the family style meals and the excess food would be thrown out. Hopefully, as a farm community they turn this waste into food for the pigs or something; otherwise, it's just a shameful waste. Last but certainly not least, they have pies and cinnamon buns for sale as you check out, along with their homemade cinnamon butter. You can't leave Yoder without mentioning their famous, or is it infamous, cinnamon buns. They are literally the size of your head, covered in rich icing and so delicious. You will be missing a true treat and experience if you don't try them. Most won't be able to have them after such a big meal, so take one home. They are the bomb warmed up the next morning for breakfast with your hot coffee, tea or big glass of iced cold milk. If you time it right and are lucky enough to stop here in August during their Heritage Days celebration, you will also get a little peek inside Amish life We missed it this year, but the state fair was going in just down the road in Hutchison. But really you don't need anything extra. The Carriage Crossing experience stands out all on its own!! read more

What could be more authentic midwest cooking than stopping in a town called Yoder at a restaurant called Carriage Crossing and enjoy lunch prepared and served by Mennonites? Since the parking lot was full of cars at lunch time, I assumed this was a place for some great food. I was wrong. While the food was abundant, it was bland. From my photo, you may observe two bowls of gravy at the upper left. One is beef and the other is chicken. I had relatives that came from the midwest (Nebraska I think). Their trademark cuisine was overcooked roast beef. Maybe that just regional cuisine. Canned vegetables? Okay, but not for me. It's probably a sign of opulence and elitism that I refuse to eat canned vegetables. It's an amazing country we life in to expect freshly prepared string beans, corn, broccoli and the lot. Maybe there is something sinful about trucking fresh produce around the country to keep people like me happy. Maybe it's a Mennonite thing. (Their favored transportation is a single horse carriage with electric lights.) Our meal came with a choice of pie. Sofie choose lemon meringue. She didn't like it and didn't eat it. "Your's is better.", she said. I tasted her pie. No lemon zest and not fresh lemon juice. Yep. Mine is better. I had pecan pie. Too sweet and not a lot of flavor. If you are okay with eating food from cans, this is the place for you. If this is authentic midwest cooking, then a reformation is desperately needed. read more

Sign on the door warning you about chemicals in the water. Service was friendly and so was the waiter, but the food was less than impressive. Table of 4 with 3 different dishes. 2 of us ordered chicken fried chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and corn. No flavor but okay with some salt and pepper. Chicken noodle soup was filled to the brim with thick noodles with absolutely no flavor or sight of chicken, veggies nothing. Oh my goodness gracious so good! Loved my chicken fried steak, could cut it with a fork, with Garvey and mash. Hubby got a juicy steak cooked perfect with all the fix'ens ! I looked at the recent reviews, with some negative, but decided to return for the first time in decades. Everyone has an opinion, but we were happy we stopped. The service was top notch (Thank you Taylor B) and food was delicious. I had the vegetable beef soup and my wife had the chicken fried steak dinner. We split a piece of Dutch apple pie, and if too was perfect. As for the famous cinnamon rolls, we got some to go for enjoying later. Came here for dinner after a day trip here with the in laws (we are visiting from california). Large crowd on a Friday evening and waiting area around the "gift shop"' was packed. I wouldn't feed my dog this food. Aside from BLAND - everything is canned or pre made. AND I'm certain my turkey wasn't cooked all the way. Mashed potatoes tasted like boxed. Gravy had no taste. Truth be told I was a bit of a skeptic coming into Carriage Crossing this evening for dinner. I'd had pies from them in the past and knew they would be great but I'd never been to the restaurant. I usually find these kind of places to be hit or miss but this is definitely a hit! The service is great, and literally everything I ate was wonderful. The icing on the cake is that it's all SUPER affordable. I think the sausage plate (made from local meat sold at the butcher across the street) I split with my husband was maybe ten dollars? The pies are al homemade and delicious. We even picked up some giant cinnamon rolls for breakfast tomorrow. If you are around Yoder and like traditional American country dining this place is a must. Hubby and I went out to Yoder, KS yesterday to get some meat from Yoder Meats and decided that we would like to try eating lunch at the Carriage Crossing. We reviewed their menu online before going so that we would have an idea if the choices available. I decided on their Vegetable Beef Soup and Hubby got their Chicken Fried Steak. You get to chose 2 Sides with their Dinners -- so he chose Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Green Beans. I chose the Soup with every intention of ordering a piece of their Homemade Lemon Meringue Pie ( I have not had a piece in about 25 YEARS!)!! The Restaurant was quite busy and it took about 5 minutes ti be seated. Once seated, our Server came immediately and we ordered Iced Teas. She brought our drinks and a small Loaf of their Homemade Bread with a small container of Whipped Cinnamon and Sugar Butter. I wasn't the biggest fan of their Butter. I should have asked for a substitute, but didn't. My Hubby who rarely finishes his food -- ate every single bite!! He even commented about how well the batter adhered to his Steak and how crispy and tender it was. I enjoyed my Soup but after a few bites decided to add some Salt and Pepper to it. It had chunks of unpeeled Potatoes, Carrots, Onion, and a medley of Corn, Peas and Green Beans. Some Beef chunks too! I did see a nice little Dinner Salad get served at the next table and that's something that I would normally choose. At the end of our meal, our Server returned asking if we had room for a piece of Pie or a Cinnamon Roll. I ordered the Lemon Meringue and after 3 or 4 bites asked for a 'Take Home' box. Hubby picked up some Caramel Cinnamon Rolls. Which we tried this morning for Breakfast and actually weren't as good as they looked. They were kind of stale and dry. What a joke. This place is so commercialized. It is no longer the Amish experience it is advertised to be. Bread was good, I think they still bake it. Salad was your normal dinner salad. Croutons were good. Asked if they had Bleu Cheese dressing, which they do, but they don't make it. It is Kraft. Downhill from there. I had the Roast Beef dinner with Baked Beans and Green Beans. The beef was overcooked, dry and tasteless. The green beans were canned, but not too bad. The baked beans were actually good. My sister had the Sausage dinner. The sausages had been cooking forever, and we're shriveled up and very dry. We both complained and our server brought her new sausage. World of difference to have fresh cooked sausage. She brought me a bowl of beef, which wasn't as dry, but was still so bad I couldn't eat it. My Mom had the Trout, and it was pretty good. Her mashed potatoes and gravy seemed very pasty. We won't be back unless it is for Strawberry Pie. But I hear that isn't as good as it used to be. read more

You may never get to Yoder, Kansas, and if you don't, my what a shame. This is an Amish restaurant that has exceptional food, exceptional service, and wicked good pies. They also have Amish crafts and foods. The rolls were fresh-baked whole wheat goodness, with the best cinnamon butter that I've ever tasted. Meals were freshly prepared and the meats and ingredients all come from top-grade local producers. Food preparation was homey greatness. The pies? Wow. Take your pick. They're all good. It may look a bit like Cracker Barrel, to answer Erick H.'s laments, but that's about where the comparison stops. Hutchinson seems to be a local destination spot. If you're here for the State Fair, the space museum, or whatever, you really should take the 10 min trip out to Yoder. Heck, I'd take the 40-50min. trip from Wichita! read more

This place is incredible. The food is second to none and the service is as friendly as it gets. It's great for large groups and the pie is awesome. This is a must for anyone attending KLETC just up the road or anyone passing through the area. My favorite was probably the chicken fried steak with incredible gravy. You could taste the freshness of the Amish meat. It was like going back in time and having your Grandmother cook a home cooked meal. I like how they give you generous portions here. This restaurant is located in Yoder and it reminds of how someone with a southern accent might call Yoda. Random. The restaurant is fairly big, family style with a cute little gift shop in the front -- very warm country style. Go for the pie, there's really not much else around Yoder to see except maybe Amish people riding in their horse and carriage or tractors. Fun times! And no I'm not being sarcastic. read more
