Home cooked food in Kansas. We had to wait to be seated because the hostess was getting food for carry out for another guest. Nobody else in the restaurant was able to assist. As we waited, we noticed multiple flies in the bakery. When we sat, we noticed multiple flies in the dining room. Must be the time of year. I ordered chicken noodle soup and my husband ordered chicken fried chicken. His entrée came with two side dishes. He picked a salad and mashed potatoes and gravy. The salad seems to be from a bag mixture. It comes with iceberg lettuce, four croutons and the carrots and cabbage that are mixed in with the premade salad mix. It is accompanied with two packages of crackers. The food has arrived. The soup is served in a small bowl. Lots of homemade noodles and chicken and very little broth. I had to add salt and pepper as there was no flavor. The soup consisted of chicken, noodles, and what tasted like water was the broth. There were no seasonings or carrots or onion or celery. My husband's mashed potato and chicken fried steak were bland as well. The rolls were served with the meal. We each got one. They were very large. However, they were very dry and they were served with packaged whipped spread made of largely vegetable oil. Overall, I would say that the food is bland. It just has no flavor. The waitress did not have much personality. She took out order andbrought our food. She did check on us once to see how we were doing. Considering we were maybe one of five tables in the entire restaurant it seems a little strange. I will not be coming back to this restaurant. Menu seemed to be diverse, but limited. read more

I'm not quite sure I understand the rave reviews of this place. I can't say it was horrible but I won't say it was fantastic. It was just ok. I know they call themselves an "Amish inspired" restaurant but after eating at an actual Amish restaurant, a few days earlier, it just feels like a cheap knock off. The menu was very similar but there were marked differences. If they make the bread in house here, I'd be shocked. It does not taste like homemade. The rolls were hard and dense so maybe they were made in house, but truthfully they just felt old and over heated. Clearly, they either take shortcuts or they don't have much business because some of the food was older and reheated. I understand we do this with fried chicken but there's something about food that has been sitting around for a long time. You can just tell because it doesn't taste right. The place felt a little dirty and the flies were having a heyday at the salad bar. I wanted to do the one time run through of the salad bar but didn't and when my bf ordered a side salad, our server got it from there and I was a bit grossed out. Maybe I'm being too liberal here but I also wasn't a fan of the uniform/costumes. Even at the actual Amish restaurant we went to, they didn't make the non-Amish servers wear "Amish" clothing. The dress play doesn't work when you have an apple watch and sneakers on anyway. It was nice to come in and check the place out but I don't think I'd recommend it or ever come back. read more

This place has some great reviews but based on our experience I do not understand why. We came in around 1 for lunch on Wednesday and the only good thing is our waiter wasn't bad and the rest of the staff weren't mean but they were very unenthused to be dealing with people. The chicken friend steak is fake, it's a pre-made frozen, breaded, beef like substance patty. I doubt the fried chicken was homemade but regardless it was over cooked and flavorless. The mashed potatoes were as bland as the chicken and some of the chunks of potato were still hard. The potato salad was different than any other I've had but good, oddly sweet but it's the only thing we had there I would eat again. The decor was kitschy, folksy, country decor as expected and it was all for sale, which I didn't expect. read more

My niece ordered from the kids menu - typical fare like grilled cheese, burger, Mac n cheese bites... My sister ordered the fried chicken and it was fantastic. The chicken was local, never frozen and juicy and flavorful. We each had the salad bar as well - it was fine, nothing to write home about but it was good for me as I am a vegetarian. Salad bar had lettuce, cucumbers, fresh tomato, shredded cheese, diced hard boiled egg, diced onion. Green pepper strips, mushrooms, croutons and diced ham or bacon. Several dressing choices and crackers as well. Our waitress was lovely and attentive, very very friendly and prompt. She was great. I forgot to catch her name, maybe Kristi?? Anyhoo - really Liked her. I also had coconut cream pie - a delicious version indeed and a huge slice!!!! We each had a cup of coffee which tasted freshly brewed. Towards the end of our stay my niece got upset and was softly crying while I hugged her. (She recently lost her first beloved pet to the rainbow bridge...), and the girl working there gave her a little present and told her that she should never feel lonely. It was so sweet and touching, I cannot tell you how heart warming a moment it was. These ladies were so wonderful. On an overnight trip to Hutchinson, we had dinner here based on all the great reviews. The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived and not many people came while we were there, which seemed strange for a 6 pm dinner. The food was ok, but I didn't understand the hype. The walls were covered with religious sayings which all had price tags hanging from them. A little of this is ok, but this was too much. It might not have felt so strange if we weren't alone in the dining room. On the way out we bought a tray of cinnamon rolls that looked delicious. We found them to be too doughy and we ended up tossing most of the tray. read more

Short drive from South Hutchinson where we have a room for the night. Seated promptly and got our menus. I got the Monterey chicken sandwich, dw go grilled cheese. Both were delicious and my wife raved about the homemade bread. We both got fries for our sides. Hot and seemed homemade, too. Wait staff was very good. Sorry no pictures, only empty plates. A hometown favorite of mine... growing up, this was the staple of ever Saturday morning... the one guarantee of each Saturday was a cinnamon roll and biscuits & gravy at the Dutch Kitchen! We stopped in a couple weeks ago for breakfast as we were in town for a day...it was lovely as always. This place absolutely wins the award for consistency...breakfast two weeks ago tasted JUST like it did 25+ years ago...and every bite was delightful! Drove a ways to come to an independent place instead of just going to ihop. Bad idea. We got there just a few minutes past their ridiculously early end of breakfast. When we told them we came for omelettes after a very late night at the rodeo, they told us they "couldn't" make us breakfast. We left instead of paying twice as much for food we didn't want, but it took a while of driving when we were already really hungry. We visited on a Saturday morning, and based on the reviews here on Yelp. It took a few minutes to get seated, yet with a popular place that's to be expected. Our waitress took our drink order quickly and took our order when she brought our drinks. Due to a couple of large groups, our order was a bit slow coming out. The eggs were lukewarm at best. My sausage was burned, and there was a constant odor of burned bread in the air. Looking over the crowd, most patrons were of the older demographics. I can see where this would be popular with them. My mom & I went there for pie. They were out of the flavor that I wanted so I got custard pie. It wasn't that great. I tried the cherry pie, it was so much better. Self serve coffee and cinnamon rolls to start, the waitress was very nice and the other staff wore Mennonite clothing. I knew I was in for a existential crisis when I walked in and there were countless homemade jams, jellies, and pickled goodies lining the walls next to cookies, candies, and other treats. This is quite possibly the best restaurant I have ever been to. Once my wife and I found it, we have been going once a week. The food is fresh and made to order. The vegetables are fresh and cooked even you order. The pies are all made there in the restaurant by hand. A whole handmade pie is less than $12! If you are near this place, you have to try it. If I could only use 2 words, I'd say "homemade deliciousness!" Growing up in Hutchinson, Dutch Kitchen is where we would always go for special occasions and I try to make a trip out there everytime I am in town. Members of the local amish community run this homey establishment. Service is friendly and they serve huge-portions of homemade comfort food. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and cream gravy with a homemade roll is my favorite, but they also have superb chicken fried steak. Last night I had a bacon cheeseburger with all the fixin's and a gigantic portion of crispy sweet potato fries. If you go, you must save room for a piece of their pie with mile-high meringue. If you don't save room, get a piece to go. read more

I wasn't impressed, but I will say the prices and serving sizes were amazing. Came for breakfast, service was fast. Ordered a coffee which tasted VERY weak. I ordered a simple eggs platter and a side of fruit. I was expecting fresh fruit but it was the kind soaked in syrup, which isn't what I wanted so I didn't touch it. The bread was my favorite part - it was awesome and very moist. Nothing to get excited about in my opinion, and the fact the coffee was bad put a bad taste in my mouth about this place. read more

First time eating here with my wife. It was perfect and just what we were looking for. Felt like a good local family place. Lots of "Sunday lunch" type of foods to pick from. I got the chicken fried chicken smothered in white gravy with mashed potatoes and corn. It was super yummy and hit my cravings perfectly. I wish we lived closer so we could go more often. Went for breakfast. Food was good. The servings were more than enough. Cinnamon rolls were yummy.

My hubby and I stop here when we can. The place has a very homey feeling. The staff has always been very gracious and prompt. My husband always gets the chicken fried steak and I usually opt for the chicken fried chicken or catfish dinner. But my fave is the chocolate chip cookie. Homemade and delicious! WE stopped here today for lunch. I read the reviews and they were good. WE got seated quickly. Our waitress took our drink order and brought them out promptly. After that service went down hill. WE closed our menus to let her know WE were ready. She walked by us several times and looked right at us. She did have several customers and I know she was busy. She finally took our order and apologized for the wait but said her first priority was to get the food out and it all was ready at once. It would have taken 10 seconds to get our order. WE had to ask her more than once for a to go cup and for our ticket. On the positive side I had a burger and fries that were very good. We also bought some cinnamon rolls to take home that look yummy. 2 stars because of poor service. I felt like she was more focused on local customers than travelers. read more
