I would call this "medium-sized" for a library. Plenty of stacks of fiction and non-fiction with a large collection of periodicals and reference materials. A few staff moving about. The library is quiet and I found a good spot in a corner with a study carrel that had power nearby. No one disturbed me and that's about as good as it gets. In addition to an outstanding collection of books, the library has a theater that shows both new and old movies for free! The seating is comfortable and the screen is large. I saw Oscar-nominated Past Lives, which attracted a good size audience. It was part of their art house cafe series. There is plenty of two-hour parking onsite as well as across the street in the garage. I'll definitely go back to see more movies.

The children's section has its own glass door so the kiddos can enjoy themselves without the noise traveling to the other parts of the library. I love how the library staff arrange books they recommend and new titles so you can easily find them. They also have a terrific borrowing program with other libraries. Plus, if they cannot obtain a title for you, then,au often purchase it to add to their collection. When you enter the building foyer, there often are seeds and plant clippings to take at no charge. It's a great way to share plants! Another good aspect of the library is that it's open every day! Parking is plentiful.

The huge kids section is perfect for your little ones and is closed off from the rest of the library via large glass wall and doors. This is great for keeping the happy kid noises down. I was very supervised at the huge DVD and music section in this library. Too bad I no longer have a means to play them at home. The history section is quite large as one might expect in this historical town. The display sections for new and promoted books are very nicely managed. There are plenty of comfy spots to sit and read too. WRL has a lot to offer for everyone. Even my picky, science fiction, nerdy self.

Lots of glass and space, lots of open areas for reading, plenty of places to sit and study. I found a comfortable table in a "talking" area where I could take a Zoom meeting or two without disturbing other patrons. It's nice that the entire library isn't a quiet zone and supports this sort of thing. Of course, the wifi was easy to connect to and I had no trouble with power outlets for the laptop. When you're a college student, you take your library for granted, sometimes -- hey, it's just a place to check out books and make copies and use the computers, right? It's not until you have that diploma in your hand that you realize what you had for four years: a fantastic, state-of-the-art center for knowledge that has an incredible number of resources all under one roof: historic artifacts, an efficient printmaking service, a kick-ass multimedia center, friendly and knowledgable staff, comfortable places to "read and relax," multiple quiet rooms (and noisy floors), independent study spaces, tons of DVDs, and more. Swem knows what it's doing, ladies and gentlemen, and that's even without funding out the wazoo like your hoity-toity private school down the interstate might enjoy. If you're looking for a place to work, study, or play, Swem is it. It's without a doubt the premier university library I've encountered and one of the most, if not the most, essential buildings on the William & Mary campus. ¡Viva Swem!

While most women in the 1930s were occupied with raising children and tending to their families,…read moreVirginia native Maude Langhorne Nelson was leading a valiant struggle to build a public library in Hopewell, Virginia. Library service began in Hopewell area in 1930 when Thomas B. Robertson established a library association with a collection of 2000 donated books and Mrs. Maude Langhorne Nelson offered her services as volunteer librarian. She was so enthusiastic in providing library services to the citizens of Hopewell that she generously gave months of her time to catalog and run the library. With the installation of a pot-bellied stove and orange crates for shelves, they achieved Hopewell's first public library. In 1931, the city took over the library with Mrs. Maude Langhorne Nelson as its first librarian. Mrs. Nelson was instrumental in having the Council appoint a Library Board and supervised the move to a new location. With hardly any funds for anything, she made her own supplies, stretching each dollar to do the work of many in acquiring new books. Mrs. Nelson was known for contributing to any undertakings in Hopewell that involved elevating the minds and ethics of the young and old alike. She remained at this post till she resigned following the death of her husband. In 1949, the library name was changed to honor its first librarian, Maude Langhorne Nelson as a tribute to her outstanding civic contribution. Mrs. Nelson's devotion to the library did not stop when she retired. When the City was considering a new location in 1952, she got the ball rolling with a contribution to the new library building fund. Since then, her name has been synonymous with the library.

The place is open and bright and has an incredible children's room dedicated to kids to play, read, play on the pc and just generally max and relax in :) SO wonderful for a mom of six right?! The staff is absolutely THE best!!! Rosa and Holly always do a great job and make you feel super welcomed and are always friendly...like seriously it doesn't get any better then them!!! SERIOUSLY! :) Our new librarian, Donna, is a gem, and well you just couldn't ask for a more welcoming place to find any sort of book or movie your looking for! And if they don't have it they do their best to get it!! We drop by here at least once a week...and even being a larger family, we have never felt like a problem or annoying...even with five boys 10 and under hahaha great stuff!!

I didnt have my Library card when I went yesterday and expected to pay a small fee for a replacement but the lady at the front desk was able to verify me with my ID and wrote my library card # down on a piece of paper. I went yesterday because I needed to purchase "Something In The Water" tickets and I know they sell out quickly so i wanted to use my phone and computer simultaneously to increase my chances. I was successful by the way. 10 cents a page to print with black ink.

NN Library wont send you to collections or demand your first born child in fees. Nothing like back home as far as fees go. NN Library is lacking some books. I have tried to find various books by feminist authors, not carried. However they have a terrific young adult selection, fiction, kids, and cooking. They also have DVD's with 7 day loan (that is pretty long if you ask me). And they display local authors. Use your local library. Its freaking awesome.

Well there is a new library since I have moved here. I usually go here after the gym on Saturdays…read moreso that I can get in here by 9:30 am and have my pick with the documentary movie section. The Books are sectioned appropriately however, there have been a few times where I think that the attendant just shoved a stack of books on the shelves to say that they were put up. So far I have yet to experience the Cafe as it is always closed but other than that it is a nice library.
