I first took Caryn's Audition Skills class back in 2005 or so, and after applying as much as I could of what I learned (there are so many juicy pearls of knowledge packed into that course!), I BOOKED a lead role in a feature film opposite Christian Slater. Caryn Breaks down every aspect of the business but also includes acting/and audition technique giving away her well honed tricks of the trade. She covers everything from headshots, to building your online presence, spirituality, self-care, the colors that will look best on you, how to do a self tape--even the technical aspects, and MUCH MUCH more. I took the AS class again last year as a refresher, and I definitely wish it was an ongoing class. At least longer. Caryn has so much knowledge to impart. She is a veteran actress as well as a teacher--She walks the walk. Her private coaching is by far the best I've had. So many times audition sides are like a puzzle that you can't put together. It's almost uncanny how Caryn can put those pieces together, almost with her eyes closed. This morning I texted her because I had a one line co-star audition that I didn't want to go on really, and I couldn't figure it out. I have had the privilege of working with Caryn West on two separate occasions when I needed to put myself on tape for auditions I wasn't able to get to in person. One of those times I was already working on a TV show and dashed over to her studio during lunch. I barely had to time to look at the sides! Needless to say, I was stressed on more than one level. It was at that session where Caryn introduced me to my new favorite app called Rehearsal 2 but I'm here to talk about Caryn's Space For Actors. First of all, it's an lovely studio nestled in the heart of Hollywood. Being aware that my time was limited we got down to business immediately. Caryn was already prepared to read with me having received the sides prior to my arrival. The camera was all set up and ready to go. We jumped right in and did a couple of takes. After slight adjustments we rolled camera again and knew we had more than one good audition to choose from. Caryn West is extremely professional: very thorough and gives honest feedback if you request it. She understand the casting process, is savvy about good lighting and encourages you to step out of your comfort zone. This review is way overdue, but I didn't want to write anything quick. I think Caryn is one of the best Audition (and Scene Study- took both) coaches with whom I've studied. Caryn helps you find the things that aren't said on the script that will help you stand out in an audition. You will grow in her classes... you will see the difference from your first audition take and your last one in each class. She is honest and tough, but doesn't break your spirit. She also touches on the business side of the industry, and focuses on getting your mindset ready. I came to Caryn's class as a good theatre actor and learned enough on-camera skills in a short period of time to become a good on-camera actor. I came into her class not thinking there was a difference but the work we did in class proved me wrong. Caryn's teaching method is light and fun, which works much better for me than teachers who are more serious and heavy-handed. While her class is geared toward auditions and booking the job, the skills Caryn taught me will tremendously improve my on-camera work. I'm looking forward to studying with her again. In interviews, Howard Fine strongly recommends staying away from acting instructors who used to act because they usually teach students the way they'd do it. The one exception to this he said was Uta Hagen who was the most generous teacher he had observed as she brushed off how she had played the same parts to focus on the student. That's immediately how I felt about Caryn. While a lifetime working actress she's the best audition instructor/coach there is. I scratched my head when I saw this was a lower price than a lot of other audition classes - especially the cold reading ones - since I usually get what I pay for. But this is certainly one time the actors who enrolled got much much more. There's not much else I can add that hasn't been said in all these 5-star reviews already. I can also honestly say I didn't get any incentive to write this. The only other thing I can possibly list here is I took the Audition Intensive and it was just a wealth of information. Caryn's an intense but very caring teacher. Be prepared to work and you'll get a ton out of it. Not only do you cover all types of auditions -- including co-stars, which trip up even some of the best actors -- but she goes over the latest forms of self-promotion on social media platforms (and I don't just mean Facebook and Twitter). Believe me when I say she's on the cutting edge. She's a very moving speaker as well. Several times I noticed the class was on the verge of tears just listening to some of her stories (which were always relevant). I've never had 4 weeks go by so quickly and I'll really miss her and the rest of the students. But don't even take my word for it, check it out for yourself. You'll see what I mean.
