Most pilgrims stop in Sarria in the Camino...well not this pilgrim! There is not much once you get outside of Sarria on the Camino for a while but I found this wonderful Albergue and it was one of my favorites in the Camino! It is gorgeous only way to get there though is on the Camino ! It is right on the Camino just past a few cow towns. Nestled behind a private game in old growth anchor the oak trees that line the Camino. The hostel is communal with separate showers for men and women but it is mostly bunk style sleeping quarters. There is a lovely restaurant on site that was delicious with a well priced pilgrim menu for about $12 euros. Wonder three course meal. There is a communal sitting area and they provide a very basic breakfast of toast and cafe. So worth going off the beaten path!

I had started my…read morejourney in Leon via Barcelona and Madrid and had been traveling for a few days so I wanted a proper hotel before beginning my hike and I wanted a good nights rest. This hotel was more than I needed it was like new clean and I had my own bathroom in the room I stayed in. The innkeeper gave me a ride up the mountain to the next town early the next morning this was free of charge but I gave him a small tip. The hotel is attached to a restaurant which was Top notch too! Unused Camino Facil or JacoTrans to take my backpack over the mountains to Samos as this was a Very long day of hiking for me and it worked out perfectly! I highly recommend!

Most of the pilgrims take the route through Sarria but they are mistaken. The route to Samos is less traveled that is true...but that is the point of the Camino! To find yourself losing the crowds... The facility was busy with pilgrims with a cafe restaurant downstairs and accommodations up. You can choose from a mixed bunk room like I did not a private room for more. I was put in a bunk room with a bunch of older Spanish men who spoke no English. That's the Camino! The place was clean but only one person working there who did it ALL. Totally understaffed. She was the cook, innkeeper and maintenance. Totally short staffed I felt for her. Quaint cute local authentic Spanish hostel.

It is a challenge to find, at least with our direction, but after you make it through a lovely town that appears deserted, it is a welcome sight. Look for the hanging outdoor lights and ask in the restaurant if you miss the hotel entrance. It is down an alley on your right before the restaurant. You're supposed to use espresso not black filtered coffee. Toastada con tomate was the cheapest quality white toast with colored tomato paste. SKIP THIS PLACE. Terrible quality and way overpriced.

This Albergue/Casa Rural is a wonderful retreat from the day to day one encounters on the Camino de…read moreSantiago. Casa de Carmen is a getaway, a small vacation from walking. Both Pedro Xose and Carmen welcome you into their converted farmhouse that has both a small albergue/dormitory as well as private rooms with a shared bathroom. Staying here is like a home away from home. The meals are home made, you walk by the kitchen and see what's for dinner. Outside Casa de Carmen, there are lovely gardens as well as horses grazing and Pedro Xose's dogs wander around, and will try to entice into a game of catch. It is hard to find places on the Camino that provides one with such attentiveness and warmth. It truly felt like a home away from home yet with lots of Spanish charm! If you can stay here... you must!

The room was plenty big and it share a nice bathroom with another room. My wife described the decor as "very cute." We hung around outside for a while and they have a few cute dogs that are up for any and all shenanigans. They are very entertaining. If you are in the mood for a beer they have a vending machine that has beer. For me that is a huge plus. The dinner was delicious. I had a fish soup to start with that was awesome. They kept the wind flowing and everyone ate their fill. The place had a country farmhouse feel to it and everyone was so welcoming. We stayed in a lovely room, and had a wonderful dinner. If I could pick one place on the Camino to go back to for a night it would be here.

It is a tiny town with this nice big restaurant with a terrific menu of Spanish classics, including the best cheese and quince dessert I've ever had with all in house made ingredients. Terrific classics gambas al ajillo and ensalada mixto and terrific coffee con Leche. Also stayed in a room which was comfortable and clean. Also has a very comfortable bar in front, the restaurant is around back. The same staff runs both so you may have to let them know you're there but once you do, you won't be disappointed.
