Kindred spirits that carry the same logic, Jamie W and I took their advice and came here when they opened at 8:30 for dinner. There was already a queue of mostly locals who seemed to know the presumed owner, an irascible woman who pointed at the customers she liked most and gave them dibs on the available tables. We eventually got seated and reviewed the long menu presented in five different languages. Uh-oh, is this a tourist trap? No, not really. The prices here are pretty low considering how close it is to Gran Via. We started with a 10€ pitcher of Sangria (Photo 6). Our server abruptly left us to pour it ourselves, and I immediately produced a red wine puddle on the tablecloth. Oopsie. What made it into the glass was quite tasty though. She dropped off a couple of rustic bread rolls that were nearly loaves (Photo 12). Our shared salad arrived, the 4€ Ensalada Mixta, a combination of tuna, egg, green olives, onion, lettuce, and tomato (Photo 7). A sprinkling of oil and vinegar made it the right starter. A couple of small plates followed. The 5€ Croquettes were savory good with a mix of potato and cod mashed in the middle, but it inexplicably came with fries rather than the Russian salad advertised (Photo 10). The 5€ Tortilla Espanola was a complete winner with the potatoes mixing seamlessly with the fluffy eggs (Photo 8). Our entrees were nicely executed. Because they were out of roast chicken, Jamie went with the 6€ Half Fried Chicken in Garlic Sauce. It was not breaded but more pan-fried, but the pieces were tender thigh meat accompanied by fries (Photo 5). I ordered the 12€ Grilled Veal Steak, a generous cut prepared medium and also accompanied by fries (Photo 9). The veal was juicy with just a tad too much gristle to finish off the steak. If you're looking for a no-frills tasty meal in the thick of Madrid's tourist zone, this is a solid bet. I'm well aware this is in Malasaña but 16 euros for a roasted chicken and 2 beverages? You gotta be kidding me. Quality-wise I can get the exact same chicken elsewhere for half the price. I sat down and as soon as i saw the prices I just left. Because I`ll rather spend 19 euros on an excellent sirloin steak with french fries and pimientos de piquillo anywhere else than paying 16 euros for a friggin roasted chicken. If you dig the place and the neighborhood and don't care getting charged outrageous prices (even higher than in other venezuelan restaurants) than everywhere else in Madrid, come. That's when I enlisted the help of this nifty website called Yelp and looked for the best places to eat in Madrid. After perusing the list of the top spots for a while, Casa Federica stood out to me because of its unique menu offerings. I wanted something different, and here this place was, waving its hands in the air, saying: "Bring me, your tired, your tapas frustration!" So I headed over and boy, was I pleased. My sister and I sat inside this cute little place and were helped by one of the friendliest guys who didn't mind explaining the menu to us or making suggestions on what to eat. We started with the spinach buñuelos and ordered the chicken with a gravy sauce as well as a pumpkin and cheese empanada. The buñuelos were honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten. They were very lightly fried but the spinach mix was amazing and so unique that it's hard to describe it. They didn't taste like gross spinach, but they were delicious and soft. The empanada was also a hit. Even though the menu says "pumpkin and cheese," the empanada was more pumpkin than cheese which was nice because I really love pumpkin. The bread wasn't too doughy and it was a good size to split between me and my sister. The chicken dish, which we ordered as our main meal, was amazing. Now, Spain is full of jamón so finding chicken anywhere is a daunting task, and finding chicken that's actually good is even more difficult. However, the chicken at Casa Federica was amazing. The gravy-like sauce on top of it was perfect and not too salty but just savory enough to satisfy. The combination of friendly service, ambiance and food gives this place five stars. It was a welcome reprieve from the standard Spanish fare and an experience I enjoyed a lot.
