It was late one evening during my trip to Spain and I was tired. Tired from walking around all day and very tired of seeing all the same tapas at every single restaurant I went to. That's when I enlisted the help of this nifty website called Yelp and looked for the best places to eat in Madrid. After perusing the list of the top spots for a while, Casa Federica stood out to me because of its unique menu offerings. I wanted something different, and here this place was, waving its hands in the air, saying: "Bring me, your tired, your tapas frustration!" So I headed over and boy, was I pleased. My sister and I sat inside this cute little place and were helped by one of the friendliest guys who didn't mind explaining the menu to us or making suggestions on what to eat. We started with the spinach buñuelos and ordered the chicken with a gravy sauce as well as a pumpkin and cheese empanada. The buñuelos were honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten. They were very lightly fried but the spinach mix was amazing and so unique that it's hard to describe it. They didn't taste like gross spinach, but they were delicious and soft. The empanada was also a hit. Even though the menu says "pumpkin and cheese," the empanada was more pumpkin than cheese which was nice because I really love pumpkin. The bread wasn't too doughy and it was a good size to split between me and my sister. The chicken dish, which we ordered as our main meal, was amazing. Now, Spain is full of jamón so finding chicken anywhere is a daunting task, and finding chicken that's actually good is even more difficult. However, the chicken at Casa Federica was amazing. The gravy-like sauce on top of it was perfect and not too salty but just savory enough to satisfy. The combination of friendly service, ambiance and food gives this place five stars. So we were served by the waiter "John" he was polite, efficient & knowledgeable about the menu. For the applie we had the tomato/buffalo mozzarella/pesto tomatoes. In a word they were "excellent"! The smoothest pesto sauce I've ever had with an superb after-flavour. We also had the deep fried spinach, which was a new one on me & very tasty. Had the chicken parmigiana (not what it's called) with roasted potatoes, both solidly good. It's worth the visit if you're in Madrid. read more

Ok so this is the best of the bars / ristorante we've visited while in Spain. Walk in and you're a part of the Family ... and Federica treat their family well for sure!!! We don't speak Spanish and we could hardly understand what our waiter was saying to us, so we just said 'bring us what you recommend.' We ended up with a South American polenta shepherds pie ... a rare and surprising treat that I wish I could describe well enough to replicate. Meaty, spicy, homemade, and with a touch of sweet on top ... delicious. Then we had the ever popular fried spinach cheese balls. Some people craved them, others panned them. Was Leary with all the positive reviews on Yelp but this is definitely a gem. I'd go through a list of what we ate but it's the same as everyone else and the whole menu is awesome. We went there on Yelp reviews - you wouldn't stumble across it without knowing the address, but it is easy to find with the Yelp app. We started with a half serving of the spinach balls that others had raved about. We like spinach and thought they were good, but just good. However we then had a special offering which was like a shepherds pie without potatoes, and boosted by some chili and cheese. Great tastes and well off the beaten path for traditional tapas. My wife, a huge dessert fan, reluctantly ordered the crepe as she had hoped to go to another place with a larger selection. The dessert was scrumptious - well balanced chocolate and a crispy crepe almost creme brûlée like structure and hints of banana. Best crepe either of us had eaten. Toss in two beer and a glass of wine for 24 Euro total bill and we were awestruck. Top value meal we have had in several years. Wish Oregon wasn't so long a haul - we'd be here at least once a week. read more

Very rarely do you find yourself in a restaurant for the first time and leave feeling like part of a private group of friends. But that was exactly the experience I had eating at Casa Federica last night. Arriving at 10 p.m., I found every table taken, but a few minutes later, a spot at the small bar opened up. They said that all the tables were taken for the night -- and it closes at 2:30 a.m. I was immediately greeted by Federico, the son of the cook, a delightful Argentinian woman wearing a bandana on her head. Federico said there was nobody named Federica, but that she didn't want to name the restaurant after him. He shrugged. I'm doing the low carb thing, and lots on the menu included breading, so Federico consulted while his mother came out showing me foods so I could okay it for her to cook for me. After that, dish after dish came out of the kitchen, prepared beautifully for me. After a few glasses of Rioja, I switched to a nice Argentinian malbec. This restaurant was the highlight of my entire month long vacation through 7 different countries in Europe. The service was absolutely incredible with the nicest waiter I have ever met. Casa Federica is an excellent but tiny family run restaurant located down a dark side street. There are only six tables and a few seats at the bar. I'm not sure they take reservations but it is in your best interest to call and ask. We arrived at 9:45pm and happened to snag the only table left, a two top smashed between two other tables. They offer their menu in English but I wouldn't count on English being spoken by any of the staff. Our server spoke very little English, enough to get us by along with some pointing and other random hand signals. One thing that I was not clear on was the type of restaurant Casa Federica was. The category says Argentine but there was no steak and the menu resembled more of an Italian tapas kind of joint rather than anything I would think of relating to Argentine. We ordered: -Meatballs with tomatoes sauce. Delicious. I could have easily consumed two servings of the meatballs as my main course and been content. -Spanish omelette which is not anything of what I expected. It is a quiche and it was served at room temperature to slightly cooler than room temperature. It was potato based and while there were likely eggs somewhere in the serving, I couldn't taste them which was good because cold eggs make me gag. This dish was surprisingly very, very good. -Pumpkin and cheese empanada . Eh, wouldn't order it again. -Meat empanada . Very good. Would order a dozen next time. -Hummus. Yum. It was served in a giant plate along with a bowl of sliced french bread, breadsticks, and flat bread. My only complaint was that I wished it was served with 100% flat bread as the flat bread went the best with the hummus. Last but not least, the mojito the bartender served up was one of the best I have had in Europe. I wanted 10 but the thought of a hangover and sightseeing the following day limited my consumption to two. read more

Great, local tapas bar with really good food. Seating is small as usual, but instead of rejecting our big group, the servers did their best to seat all of us in two tables. The atmosphere is great, lots of social people because of the bar. The food was AMAZING and SO CHEAP. The staff was very friendly and considering how small this place is, it was very cozy. The food was awesome and we even got to meet the chef and her assistant. We made friends with the assistant being that he's from the same country as I am. We ended up having the rollitos filipinos, spinach cheese balls, chicken milanesa and 3 different kinds of empanaditas. The food was all very very good. I checked on yelp for ideas on what to eat in our area & came across Casa Federico our first night tried finding it no such luck , Second night we arrived too late at midnight so kitchen was closed even tho they are open till 2am. Third time was the charm , arrived early didn't have reservations so we had to wait no big deal sat at the bar & got some drinks good Sangria & nice cold San Miguel beer. We got lucky enough that there was a cancellation & were seated within 20 minutes or so? The place is small so if u decide to try it make reservations since they do help. Once seated I tried the traditional Tarta from Spain since after having a tapas size at the bar I wanted more good Tarta a bit salty but not bad this ended up being a mistake on my part since the rest of the food was more than plenty. On the appetizers Buñelos de Spinaca are amazing , this is spinach fritters great tasting & went well with the rest of the food. Second the Tarta de Jamon y Queso ... Sweet Jesus this is a large hot pastry that can almost be a dessert , nice & sweet crust with delicious hot ham & cheese inside. My main dish was the Pollo con Crema & potatoes by this time id have to admit I was almost ready to pop since I was getting so full the Chicken was very good went well with the sauce good potatoes. Finally the Chicken Milaneso , nice piece of chicken also with potatoes. Everything was delicious by the time I was done I was in a food coma because it was too much. The staff was so nice & kept offering me an after diner drink that supposedly helps with digestion. They insisted & gave it to us a shot of Pacharan which is native to Spain nice & it was free of charge. Not sure ifit helped but i swear it did plus it didn't tatse bad at all. The place kind off in a hidden area since it is basically down what looks like an alley way at first glance U say to yourself am I going the right way? Nothing crazy on the decor gets pretty packed it seems with probably more locals since every time someone came in they would greet each other w Hugs & Kisses as if they knew each other. Down a non descriptive quiet street, this restaurant hides some wonderful homemade Spanish cooking. When we entered, we were warmly welcomed. Only one other diner but within 15 minutes of our arrival, many more diners arrived. Everyone seemed to be locals and spoke Spanish. When left at 3:30, the place was packed. We had the spinach as others recommended. Different but good. Loved the pumpkin empanadas and the meat empanadas! Not really a tapas place but really good food at reasonable prices. read more

Tucked away on a small side street in Madrid's theater district - A small bar/restaurant frequented by locals. My fiance and I spent 4 days in madrid and Casa Frederica was our absolute FAVORITE place to eat!! We had such a great experience from the moment we opened the door to the end. We were helped by David who helped us order everything we ate. He went over the dishes that complimented each other and even modified one so that it was not too much. He was spot on with his recommendation. Everything was perfect! We had the following which were all 10 out of 10: builds de espanacas, milanesa napolitana de ternera, one meat and one pumpkin/cheese empanada, and caramel pancake with banana and ice cream. For drinks David made us his version of san gria. i know a thing or two also about cleanlines and watched them clean all the plates and tables. This restaurant knows what they are doing and really strive to provide the best quality in their food and customer service. I am from San Francisco California where we have the best places to eat and I would say Casa Frederica would do great in San Francisco or anywhere else. To David, Jeffrey, the lady and other gentleman and cook working on 11/15/14 a huge THANK YOU for making our last night in Madrid a special one. Love this place! In fact, while in Spain my wife and I went twice. The best part is that this is one of the few places that offers the black version of the Spanish beer (Mahou? - sorry for the spelling error). That in and of itself is worth a visit! Outside of the tremendous beverage, my good Man served us some really tasty dishes that had us in awe. The humus is near perfect and the caprese salad was... wait for it... 15-year-old words are coming out... "the bomb." There is a basil dressing that I wish was bottled and sold. If you are in the mood, I also suggest the pumpkin empenada. My wife and I nearly cut each other over the last piece (kidding... sort of!). The pizzas are also delicious. The service is great and just wonderful people are ready to serve you with all the pride in the world. Near Plaza Espanya, on an otherwise nondescript to sketchy back street is this gem. This is a very small place with a few tables. The host and hostess make you feel as if you were dining in their kitchen at home. A complimentary Spanish tortilla was served: easily the best we had in either Barcelona or Madrid: the tight consistency and the right flavor. Usually you just get one or the other. We started with the buñuelos espinica, deep fried spinach--amazing, especially since I dislike spinach. Next came empanada calabaza--a very light, savory crust with pumpkin and cheese inside. Awesome. And we finished with the Margherita pizza. A bit thicker than traditional Americana thin crust, but not deep dish thick. Crunchy and soft. Highly recommended. We were craving empanadas and the beef and chicken empanadas were outstanding. We also loved the tortilla espaniollia, and the tarta de jambon and queso was amazing! We also enjoyed the chicken Milanese. Picky teen ate a pizza - also great. Service was friendly and the waiter made excellent suggestions. We arrived early ie 830Ish and the place was empty.
