A fun off the beaten path way to experience Casa Loma! We played the King of the Bootleggers game in the afternoon (4:30pm). The game is designed for up to 15 people. In the end our group had 9 people. A little unusual is that because the games are designed for such a large number of people you'll likely be playing with strangers unless you have enough friends and book the entire game. Since the castle closes at 5pm we didn't have trouble parking. If you're purely there for the game I'd recommend booking an evening game so the parking lot is more likely to have space. The website difficulty rating was accurate. With 9 people it was very challenging to finish in 60 minutes. If only we had about 10 more minutes we probably could have solved it fully. (Someone told me that Murdoch Mysteries was so hard to at with a group of 12 they only solved about 70% of it. But she still had a great time!) King of the Bootleggers is great in that there are three separate rooms that are part of the puzzle. So the group is divided up. You may be able to mostly only play with your friends and not strangers. At the end you do come together for a final puzzle that requires some teamwork. That also means this particular game has re-play value! If you played one room you could get play again and ask to play a different room. The actors did a fantastic job and really set this escape room apart from all others I've played. They were helpful with giving unlimited hints while staying in character. If encouraged to interact with them in character (but no physical touching. Be nice to them). Part of Bootleggers was walking through the tunnels of the castle. The tunnels were decorated with lights for Christmas! So that was a nice bonus. Highly recommend! There's also a photo op at the end and you can tip your actors. Take away points are you should have a lot of friends or be prepared to play with strangers if you want to win and go in the evening for better parking. read more

In addition to the 11 people participating in the escape room there are three actors participating. The actors remained in character the entire time. Overall we were there for about 90 minutes. So much fun! We did the Bootleggers escape room with three teens and two adults (joining two other teams). The story is really great! It lends well to multiple teams completing the puzzles separately and then coming together at the end. In addition, the actors really make a difference here. I've never been to an escape room that includes a full script, character development, and energetic acting - it was really great! I would highly recommend the experience! Our youngest teens were 13, so I think it's pretty appropriate for that age and older. read more

SO MUCH FUN!! my husband and son did King of the Bootleggers two years ago and wouldn't stop talking about it. So this spring break we took a trip up to Toronto just for this. We did Escape the Tower and Station M. Both were great. With ETT we were paired with a larger group which was could be frustrating at times but we had a blast. Station M we did just the three of us - a bit too much to do for that many people but the puzzles were awesome and Agent Buttercup gave us just the right amount of guidance. My friend and I signed up for the Bootlegger escape room and it was absolutely fantastic. There was a cast of 5 or 6 characters who helped bring the evening together. We met at Casa Loma and walked over to the lodge with the group leader who told us the rules and told the group to knock on the door. We were then greated by another character who took us on a tour of the lodge and explained all of the puzzles we would have to solve. There was a gold room, a library, the bootlegger club, and a place to make moonshine. After the tour we were told to choose a room and get to know the people we would be solving the puzzles with. You need to look everywhere to solve everything and we did just that. Once the puzzles in each room are solved you go to other rooms to help the other players. Once all of the puzzles are solved, everyone takes the final clue from each room and works together to solve the end of the game. This escape room was orchestrated extremely well from beginning to end. This was actually the BEST ESCAPE ROOM I have ever been to. My boyfriend and I went to the bootleggers escape room. In this specific room there are three different actors and they were all a blast. You go into the escape with a group of 15 and then are divided into 3 different rooms to conquer 3 different tasks. If you are able to finish your room you can go help the others with getting out. This escape room is on the pricier side, $40 per person on Sundays and $50 per person on busier nights. On average most escape rooms that I've been to range anywhere from $25-35. The biggest complaint I have is that I think that the group size was too big. At the very end it was hard for everyone to engage because there was just way too many people. Realistically, this room can be completed with a group of 6-9 people max. The puzzles were standard escape room style such as locks, word puzzles, etc etc. The live actors did a fantastic job staying in role and adding an interactive element to the rooms. You also get to explore some cool rooms in the casa loma that you probably otherwise wouldn't. Overall, it was a good experience. I would be inclined to come again but with a smaller group and maybe people you may know. Not the best escape room I've ever been to but it was decent. read more

A group of my friends and I did Dragon's Song with our kids (ages 7-10). Everyone really enjoyed themselves. The kids had an amazing time. They were nervous because they did not know what to expect, but the story line is not scary at all. The puzzles were interesting but not too difficult. Doable for kids with hints from the actors. We did King of the Bootleggers pre-Covid and this was much easier than the Bootlegger escape room. The attention to detail in the props are superior to other escape room operations and the actors are fantastic. They are funny and are quick on their feet. We love how interactive it is. The costs is a bit higher than other escape rooms, but it is well worth the experience. Note: there is a lot of stair climbing on narrow stairs. Some spaces will be very tight for taller or larger people. Definitely not a good fit for those who have mobility issues. read more

We did this as a fun birthday idea and to try something new. At first was a bit skeptical playing with people you don't know, but it turned out to be a great group. The puzzles weren't easy, and a good challenge to figure out. Not too hard either. The "room" is not just one room where everyone is piled into, but 3-4 separate rooms, each with their own puzzles, so the group was split up. Only regret was we didn't get a chance to solve the other puzzles in the other two rooms. We definitely want to do King of the Bootleggers again for a chance to solve the other puzzles and then try the other escape rooms. read more

A few things to keep in mind if you go: - wear comfortable walking shoes, as you are traveling around the house or standing for most of the event - unless you arrange otherwise, you will be in a group of ~20 and (at some points) solving the puzzles together. Be sure to connect and communicate! There are parts of Casa Loma that you will only see if you are participating in the Escape Rooms. Came here with a big group of friends to have some fun. I've been told the escape room series at Casa Loma is a bit different than others. So I got a group of people together and came to conquer King of Bootleggers. When we arrived, we were meeting at the castle ground first. And then we were led to a house across that is part of Casa Loma's property. Anyhow, after some instructions from our main guide we were lead into the house itself. This is where the fun begins. We were told there were actors that immersed us into the actual story. This made the escape room very interesting. The actors not only acted the parts well, but also helped us a bit with the solving of the puzzles. We weren't "stuck" at all. What really made the escape room great was the fact there's actual interaction and not just solve a puzzle. Plus the story was captivating. As an avid escaper ...SOLID ROOM! We did Escape the tower and it was amazing!! Very cool concept and great puzzles! Very logical and you were able to make it through if you split your group up to take on different tasks. Was also my first time at Casa Loma and absolutely loved it!! So why only 4/5? Our group was a little too big. This was the first room I've done where they combine groups. Kinda cool concept to meet new people, but our group already had 7 which was plenty, but we had 2 other couples join us, so 11 just felt like a tad too much for one room. Also, the cost. We went on a weekday so it was a little cheaper, but with tax it still came to $45/person! Kind of pricey for a 1 hour experience. With that fee I wish we were able to see a bit more of the castle and the grounds instead of just our escape room then getting shown the Exit immediately after. Finally, the ending picture! Such a cool staged area to use props and take a final group shot, but they used a cellphone camera and the picture came out so blurry! Would definitely consider getting a DSLR if I were them! I don't even know where to begin explaining how amazing this experience was. From the moment we booked our private room I had a special request to incorporate a proposal into the game with many special instructions for the staff to follow. There were a lot of moving pieces to ensure this remained a surprise and I was nervous all week something could go wrong. They absolutely knocked it out of the park - this genuinely could not have gone any better!!!! They were so accommodating, had some truly brilliant ideas in how to pull this off, and were quick to reply when communicating! King of the Bootleggers started out great. After a briefing of the rules, we met Charlie, one of the actors for the game. Tip: he'll ask what your gang name is, so be prepared to come up with something cool or else a random dude in your group will name your gang the home-wreckers. Hm. Then, things got awful for a minute... I had no idea we were going to be led through a tunnel of horror, and I hate scary. Note to self: don't come back in October. The actual game was super fun. Best part was the live, interactive actors, which I haven't experienced in the other four escape games I've played. Worst part was that it's the largest group I've played in (17 of the 18 spots filled); more people does not equal more help, you'll inevitably get people who just get in the way. This room only has a 16% escape rate, and we failed to increase that percentage. I blame the group size. But it was still a great experience, and I would definitely do it again. read more

King of the Bootleggers! What a fun experience that is bigger in scope than most other escape rooms I've been to. These are large escape experiences so you better have a big group if you want to play by yourself and you'll need a big group if you want to succeed. You won't be able to see everything because there's so much to do and that divide/conquer is necessary to win. If you like role-playing with actors in your rooms, then this is definitely for you. I had fun interacting with the actors and playing along with the prohibition story. In the end, our group didn't escape because we ran out of time. I didn't have my regular group with me and frankly it would probably be difficult to rustle up the 12-16 people necessary to have a private experience. This was so much fun! I've done escape rooms in Toronto and China and I have to say this is by far my favourite that I've ever done and the ones in China are pretty elaborate. I came with a group with six people for a work social and everyone enjoyed the experience. It is more expensive than the traditional ones you find around Toronto but considering there are actors that add to the experience, it is well worth the extra cost. It's $41+ tax/person on Friday/Saturdays and $36+ tax on any other day. The rooms are nicely designed and is central towards a theme. The clues are of high quality. I remember being irked at the poor quality of the clues at other escpae rooms I've done but this wasn't the case there. I for one love solving puzzles and I found this to be the perfect level of difficultly. It wasn't overly difficult so that it's discouraging but still challenge enough that you feel accomplished when you solve something. The actors also help you along when you get stuck. You will be paired with randoms if you don't come with a full group of 16 so the outcome of the game is highly depends on your fellow players as you're split up into 3 rooms for the initial part of the game. Come here with an attitude to have fun and not just to escape! I highly recommend this for people of all ages, couples, families, friends, small groups, big groups. Everyone! I'm reviewing the "Escape from the Tower", one of the escape games at Casa Loma! This is my 3rd time setting foot in the castle for another heart-racing, mystery-solving adventure. I absolutely love the thrill and the creativity put behind this one! We had a great team of 12 friends and formed Team Food Coma! Well, we had a big dinner (and we drank) before this hahaha... highly functional alcoholics! We escaped with 25 seconds to spare! Great team work guys. ** Please see my previous review for some helpful "King of the Bootleggers" game tips :) ----------------------------- Some helpful tips, but knowing this will NOT help you escape... all you need to know is that you need to have a keen eye for details, follow instructions and you will succeed :) 1. Wear proper attire - it is extremely warm in the tower! They have electric fans here and there but we were still sweating bullets lol. 2. Wear shoes that won't come off!!! My friend lost her sandal while going up the tower lol. We were searching for it with minimal light source and losing time XD 3. There are 4 levels in the tower. You solve each level together and advance to the next level as a group 4. Listen to the actors carefully, they give very helpful hints & clues! 5. Again, listen very carefully... even if you need to take the initiative to tell your peers to SHUT THE HELL UP lmao... which is what happened during our session XD 6. Communicate with your peers. If you found clues or completed a puzzle, be sure you make it clear to everyone! 7. You will need to know a bit of math, some geography, and logical thinking ;) 8. Visited September 2, 2018. Did the King of the Bootleggers room. It was cool to be at the castle although for this room, you really only see the theater (for the safety instructions) and walk through some "tunnels" with billboards or dark paned windows that lead you to a door - the start of the escape room. Believe this escape game actually takes part in the old hunting lodge because that is where you end up (across the street from the castle). The actors were a nice touch and different from the regular escape room game. Think the rooms could have benefited from more aircon units (it was pretty hot that day). The puzzles themselves were average in difficulty. Unfortunately, because this room allows for a lot of people, one really can't see/do all the puzzles (you get divvied up in the beginning). read more

This was my very first escape game and damn was I impressed with what Casa Loma has brought to the world of escape games. For me it would be really hard to top but we'll see. We were here during the weekday because the weekends were booked up months in advance. We did the Prohibition Scenario one which sets in 1921 Toronto. First Impressions: Pretty creepy to tell you the truth. You walk to the basement where someone is waiting to check you in and the whole vibe just felt creepy in a fun exciting way. Even though we had 12 people we still had 3 random people join us. They take you into this small auditorium where they explain the rules and then you are off. Game Impression: Without going into too much detail I just want to let you know what you are getting yourself into. This is a co-operate style escape game. Your group will be divided up into different rooms solving different puzzles. All three rooms are different themed but still stays within the same story. Each room has an actor that helps monitor the room but love the fact that they stay in character. The challenges are not that difficult, I would say moderately challenging but it does take time so watch your time carefully. You get about 1 hour to complete all the task and just a hint there's more to complete after the rooms. The actors will interact with the group so just have fun with it. Opportunities: There not much I would change with what Casa Loma is doing. One suggestion I may have for this scenario specific is to be more vocal about the time that is left or have some sort of display. We were discouraged from using our phones, some privacy policy I think so it was hard to tell time and we didn't know when we officially started Overall Impressions: Our group could not stop talking about it after we were done. Unfortunately, we did not complete the story but it was for sure memorable. The production here was amazing from the set design to the actors costume it was simply perfect. Make sure you do the tour before you do the Escape Room, as the castle is really cool and has a really great cafe if you want to get lunch. We did Escape the Tower and had a blast. This was a lot of fun. At the Anti-Aging Toronto Clinic we are a small team of nurses, laser experts and estheticians. We went out for an early dinner and then drove to Casa Loma. Parking is included when you're attending this activity. We have purchased all 12 spots since the purpose was to have a team building activity ... and it definitely worked! We operated as a team finding clues and resolving tasks together. I would definitely recommend this Escape Room if you are thinking on a fun, creative, team building activity for a group of 12 or less. read more

Had a great time with friends doing the Escape from the Tower game! It was for a friend's birthday so we had a group of 6 (minimum) and were joined by 3 other people. The puzzles were pretty fun, good mix of machine, math and logic, and the actors are there to let you know if you got it right. They do have a disclaimer since you have to climb like 394729 stairs, but you stop to do puzzles on each floor so it's not a serious workout. Group of 6-9 is a decent size since you need to split up and solve a few different puzzles on each floor simultaneously. We almost made it out! I would say difficulty is around Medium, not the hardest game I've been to but still challenging! Good for tweens and up but would need a few adults for the harder puzzles. read more

I've done a few escape rooms before and this place is LEAPS AND BOUNDS more engaging, more fun, and better constructed than any other I've come across. Besides the live actors the puzzles were thoughtful and challenging without being "obtuse." We had a group of 18 coworkers go and besides laughing our butts off we also managed to develop some team building skills AND escape with (not kidding) seconds to spare. This place is an absolute gem. Highly recommended. Only caveat is thinking about doing this with random people would be tough. Have at least 4-5 friends join so you can work as a group. read more

I did Station M with three friends and 7 strangers. The room is beautifully designed, and the actor did a fantastic job. The story line was great, and everything worked exactly as it was supposed to work. However, I would still not recommend this room to anyone who has more than a couple of escape rooms under their belt. Although twelve people are allowed in at a time, based on the number of puzzles in the room, this number should be decreased to no more than eight. In fact, I would say that six people would be the ideal number. For significant portions of the game, there were no available puzzles for people to work on. And standing around when you are paying $36+ / hour does not feel good. Moreover, even though the puzzles are very polished, they were not particularly challenging. I expected much more from Company & Co. I have done their other escape rooms around Toronto, and always been impressed by how they managed to keep a large group busy. Here, I felt disengaged and frustrated. One easy fix for this room, which I hope is implemented, would be providing enough paper for every participant at all stages of the game. read more

I was not particularly impressed with this escape room. We (9 of us) played Escape From the Tower. While the setting and props were really great (it's in freakin' Casa Loma!), I found that the puzzles weren't particularly challenging. There are actors present to help you along, but they ended up being too 'hinty'; they basically didn't let you fail a part of it to try again. I felt as if they were pushing along a little too quickly. Apparently you have sixty minutes to complete youre escape, but without any timers present, who knows what it really worked out to be. I can't see any groups actually 'losing' this game, unless they were REALLY clueless. I love escape rooms, but definitely won't be back to Casa Loma to play the other ones; I'll visit a different, more challenging location, next time. read more

I went on a Tuesday evening with my boyfriend's coworkers.This escape room is as awesome as it gets. Doing puzzles in a group of 12 is challenging, but all the better. This escape series is the true definition of team work. Going up a tower and flights of stairs makes the whole process even more exciting. It is more expensive at 41$ per person, but is well worth it. It takes coordinating and booking in advance to get the time slot you want (especially if it is on a weekend). There are live actors in the room with you and the additional dimensions of having different areas in the tower adds to the definition of escape as the entire game is on different levels. The live actors increases the interaction in the game and guides you along the way. read more

It was a fun game with puzzles held in a historic site next to Casa Loma. A group of 18, we started at the Liberty Cafe in the basement of Casa Loma itself for drinks and snacks and then walked across to do the Escape Room. My main complaint is that after it was over we headed back to Liberty Cafe to continue the evening and chat about our experience only to have the staff there pounce on us like we breaking the law and told us if we wanted back in the cafe we had to walk all the way around the building and pay the entrance fee. We already paid our $56 plus dollars for the event and were intending on spending more money at the bar. From a management and customer service perspective this was just a bad call. Way to turn down money and bring the whole evening to a jolting halt. read more

Escape the tower was awesome! The actors definitely make it more of an enjoyable experience. The puzzles were a nice challenge and the views from the top of the tower are spectacular. Our team managed to escape just in the nick of time. The group snap at the end is a cool idea. The only issue I have is the size of the group. We were maxed out at 12 and my friends and I were 4 out of the 12 so we played with 8 other strangers. We felt a bit bummed out since we only took a turn at a couple puzzles. The rooms are designed to accommodate 12 people. Since we were a group of 4 we were put together with 8 strangers. While everyone was friendly, a group of 5 friends in our 12 did prefer to stay together (understandably so as they were out to have fun as a group) and in order for us to get involved we did have to interject ourselves in solving puzzles in order to take part. One of our party did not feel comfortable and so looked for clues but took very little participation in trying to solve the puzzles. Escape rooms are fun when with a group of people you know and have a camaraderie with and can communicate easily with and feel included. That is difficult to achieve with strangers in a one hour game. Given the expense, I would not participate here again unless I have my own group of 12. I will stick to escape rooms that allow for smaller private groups. It is too bad because our experience would have been a lot more fun on our own and the escape room - Murdoch Mystery - was well done and a challenge. read more

We went for a company outing and booked the entire King of Bootleggers room. I've done a couple of escape rooms before, but this one was not only spacious but there were a lot of puzzles to figure out! It was nice that everyone was able to contribute in some sort of way since there were so many things to work on at a time. The character cast was definitely helpful and they did a nice way of tending to all the different people who were scrambling to find clues. We were maybe about 30 seconds from escaping but everyone had a lot of fun either way! It would have been nice to go over afterwards what kind of puzzles each group did since we weren't able to see or know what other groups had to do. I did a corporate team building event in the Escape From The Tower room - there were eight of us. A great activity for a large group. Everything from the decor to the puzzles was very well thought out, and it's evident a lot of research and planning went into its creation. Everything except for maybe the guide who accompanied us, who was very condescending and unprofessional in the way he tried to help us solve the problems in each stage. He went by the name of Murphy (I assume this isn't his real name, as he said he was a WWII soldier to fit the context of the room). He was very aggressive, rude, and I would go so far as to say a bully in the way he explained things. When we didn't understand something as soon as he said it, he would be visibly annoyed. I understand this room has a success rate of only 20% (which is what he told us), so I'm not sure why he had to make us feel incompetent and treat us like children. I wouldn't recommend this particular escape room to a group because of this guide. There are many challenging, engaging and more affordable escape rooms in the GTA, so I won't be returning. read more
