Hotel Casa Tucan is a hidden gem in Playa del Carmen. My boyfriend and I loved our reasonably priced, very spacious cabana room, and the staff is very friendly. It has a lovely pool/garden lounge-area where we spent a good deal of our evenings relaxing. The wifi in our specific cabana was a bit out of reach for our cell phones, but it worked fine on our laptops and the wifi works perfectly fine everywhere else around the rooms and pool. Our room was on the cheaper side and came with a fridge and two fans. I read a review that said the cabana windows only had mosquito nets in place of glass, but our windows all had glass and much to my surprise no bugs or other critters found their way into our room or bathroom. Plenty of privacy as well.
The location of the hotel is also a plus, as it's just a five minute walk to the beach and even closer to 5th avenue and more tourist-y places. Also about ten minutes from Walmart if you need to run and buy shampoo or sunscreen.
I also must make a point to compliment the hotel restaurant. It really should have its own entry here and on Tripadvisor! I can only speak to the vegetarian dishes and desserts, but everything we had was tasty and filling and at a very frugal price. My boyfriend especially enjoyed the vegetarian burrito that comes with guacamole. The drinks were a lot better than some that we got on 5th avenue and at a MUCH better price. I recommend their happy hour for even more deals. The wait staff is helpful and speaks a multitude of languages (I heard at least Spanish, German, and English and possibly French).
All in all we couldn't have been more satisfied and can't wait to return next time we're in Playa! read more
