We just returned from Viceroy and had such a relaxing and amazing time! - The staff are all welcoming, genuinely friendly and super attentive -prior to checkin I let them know mosquitoes absolutely love me , they had spray upon my arrival (organic and off!) and they sprayed my patio and had a netting around the bed all set up. I never had any bites until I left the resort my last night for a wedding ! - food: We ate at both restaurants and the food was excellent. Especially the shrimp and octopus dishes. Cocktails were done right! Not watered down like other places . - beach - this resort seems to have the best beach area as compared to nearby resorts with actual sand The pool is a perfect size and was never crowded . Pepe and staff always took care of you. -gratuity - 16% service was added automatically to your bills. This is not an all inclusive , for the quality of service we made sure to bring $USD to add tip for everyone. They all work so hard in the heat to make your experience memorable! -Spa - Splurge for this! Best way to start our days first thing with massages and facials . You can also use the jacuzzi and steam room daily without services. I frequent Burke Williams and their masseuses are good , strong too ! They did our services outdoor for couples in this serene area with a fountain running. -room - we enjoyed the premium villas, super spacious with walk in closet, shower and bath tub . All the villas are close so a short walk to the pool - There is a little bass coming from the next door resort's DJ at night, but when I closed the windows , it was very muffled and did not bother us at all. - long drive from main road - so expect a secluded spot . They will call you a taxi that gets there in 20 min. Download WhatsApp and text the same taxi will take you back. Felt safe ! We can't wait to come back someday! From the welcome coconut drink and cool towels to the thorough tour ( thanks Claudia) ,check in was a great experience. Bellmen we're very friendly and helpful. And our villa was just gorgeous! Heated plunge pool, hammock, and more great you as you enter the area. You are in the jungle, so there is a lot of natural privacy. Inside the villa, you will be caught up in the romantic vibe thanks to the sweet and decadent decor. Outdoor shower brings you close to nature. Many special touches await. Poolside is another area to be spoiled- by Pepe and crew. They will get you anything you want, no need to lift a finger. And the wait staff at Coral restaurant are very thorough. They seem more like personal butlers rather than waiters, taking the time to get to know their guests by name, and learning their food and drink preferences. This area is also beautiful, with a view of the ocean. And the spa is very relaxing, access to the spa facilities including the steam room, jacuzzi is complimentary with your stay. Viceroy isn't without its flaws. The small beach is barely swimable due to the coral/rocks. And though they work to remove the seaweed, if you come from May-Nov that will be somewhat of a pain ( the whole area not just here). And there is music that drifts over from the next door hotel which at times annoys. It wasn't too bad while we were here, but was noticiable. There are mosquitos and rainforest animals around, so if you're not okay with seeing agouti while eating breakfast on your patio, this isn't your place. And yes it's pricey. This hotel was very intimate and relaxing. The adults-only aspect brought a sophisticated energy with attention to detail in the design. I absolutely LOVE how each suite is designed to be private. You feel like you're in our own little oasis, no matter where you stay at the hotel. There were tons of mosquitoes, which did affect my enjoyment. Viceroy did provide a nice repellent with after-care, so that helped. Service on the beach was also very nice. Drinks and snacks were brought promptly. Staff was thoughtful and responsive. Do be aware; the beach is small. We're told that all the hurricanes have taken away a lot of the sand. So the beach was a bit rocky and there was TONS of seaweed (all up and down this coast). Right next to the hotel is a loud public beach that smells like motor oil from all the water-skis. That's not the hotel's fault, but it's something to keep in mind when you're deciding whether to visit Quintana Roo. The only thing keeping Viceroy Riviera Maya from a perfect 5 star rating are the dinners. We weren't impressed by any of our meals there. They weren't *bad*, but they weren't especially good. Viceroy needs to bring in a head chef that can infuse flavor and excitement into their culinary program. But overall, I'd stay here again, if I was in the area. I genuinely liked the vibe! read more

On the negative side of things we've got a handful. (1) far removed location, pretty isolated (2) very expensive to travel from the property $20 USD minimum (3) most uncomfortable and HARD bed I've ever slept on (4) loud music from nearby hotel (5) small beach and very small pool (6) personal villa plunge pool is quite warm so not terribly refreshing (7) villa 14 is located behind the kitchen area so you hear some commotion from that building (8) only a boutique on the property and not a sundries shop which could be extremely helpful given that you are so far removed from things. Luckily we went to a neighboring hotel to pick up items we required. Overall we made the best of it but would not return to this property or even this area of Riviera Maya. Also, be warned getting to the airport takes a lot of time with current construction (this was as of early December 2022). Recommended to leave four hours before your departure time. read more

We love Mexico and decided to go for our 20th wedding anniversary. We started looking at resorts and we found Viceroy. I don't know where to start because it was amazing experience. The service they provide us was like no other resort. The food was delicious. Our villa was immaculate, we had our own heated pool. They come twice a day to clean your room. Everyone is very friendly, respectful, attentive, helpful and very welcoming. We traveled with our dog and he had his own bed, bowls and a little cabana by the pool & beach area. We did used a part of the spa almost every day that is included with your stay...a sauna, a jacuzzi and a lovely body scrub that is incredible. We did get a massage that was fabulous and we enjoyed it very much. They also have a place where you can do your own canvas painting at no extra charge, very romantic. We loved that is an adults only resort which is quite relaxing. They have 2 restaurants, the staff makes you feel like Royalty... yes like Royalty. Andres, Victor, Fabian, Ivan, Pepe & Dulce made our stay more beautiful. By the pool, Carlos and another guy that I dont know the name asked to clean our sunglasses, which NO ONE ever did that in any of our vacations. That was the cherry on top. Agustin & Edgar were always around making sure we were okay and asked if we need it anything. Agustin was very special to us and with our dog Charlie. He even got treats for Charlie for the whole stay. They also give you 3 pieces of soap that leaves your skin amazing you wont need lotion. We definitely going back soon it was unbelievable. The pool and beach area is beautiful and the staff are extremely helpful in every aspect of your stay. If you're looking to party all night with 2000 other people this isn't the place for you. If you're looking for absolute tranquility...if you want to be spoiled with your every need anticipated...then look no further than The Viceroy. This is a place where once you arrive there is no need to leave the property. It's the type of place where your biggest decision of the day is "do I want a pineapple daiquiri or mango daiquiri next?". My husband and I first visited in 2017 and the minute we came through the jungle walkway and saw our first view of the beach we knew we found someplace special. This is a boutique property for adults with private villas. Each villa has its own private area with a plunge pool, covered outdoor bed, hammock, and outdoor shower. The villas are quite large and well appointed. The pool area is lovely and the beach is extremely clean. At the beach you have your choice of comfortable beach chairs under a private cabana or king size canopy beds suspended in air! The dock will take you out to the water where you can relax in hammocks over the blue sea, snorkel among the fish, or enjoy a private dinner. Speaking of food (the only way to go is all inclusive!)...the options are wonderful! You cannot go wrong with Azteca cake for breakfast! It's comfort on a plate! The guacamole and pico is excellent! They offer everything from Mexican dishes, steaks, American fare, fresh fish, and everything in between! It may not be on the menu but if they have ingredients they will accommodate you! Now....I'll get to the real reason why my husband and I came back this past fall for our 10 year anniversary. It wasn't the beauty of the property. It wasn't the food. It was PEPE! This gentleman IS the Viceroy for us. He is attentive without being over bearing. He remembers your likes and dislikes. Pepe is on the ball! I've been extremely fortunate and have stayed at some wonderful places but in all my travels no one has ever provided such an amazing experience like Pepe! And there is a definite difference between customer service and customer experience. He's not just taking an order and delivering drinks. Pepe makes you feel well taken care of, he makes you feel like your part of the family for a few days. He knew I wanted a drink before I even knew I wanted it! He knew which beach chairs we preferred and he'd meet us at breakfast to let us know our favorite chairs were waiting and everything was already set with ice cold water. He remembered to alert the dining staff my husband doesn't like cilantro. It's all about the attention to the little details. Pepe is an absolute gem and seriously the reason we'll return again! This review is for the spa. This was a hard one for me since I do have a special place in my heart for the Viceroy. I wanted to book a temazcal ritual for me and my SO. The price, $390. Okay, that's fine since they're going to get rid of the bad vibes around me, lol. I booked with ease. Upon arrival, we were running 10 min behind. The girl at the spa took us to where the temazcal is, (I noticed they made improvements to the property since I was last there 10 years ago). We were introduced to our shaman, Julio. Really nice guy. Overall, I liked the experience but there are a few things I would suggest for the improvement of a temazcal ritual. When you're about to be "blessed" and you're standing there while there's guests running on a treadmill just a few steps away, you can't concentrate. Please create a barrier or some sort of private wall so guests experiencing this can really focus, in private. 2nd - when you're in the temazcal, tell other employees walking outside of it, to stfu, it's a disturbance. Or maybe place a stand a few steps away from the little dome with a note: "temazcal in process, please be quiet". I really don't need to hear the gossip about the hotel employees. 3rd- surveys. I understand that while closing the ceremony you might want to ask how the experience was. But please don't train your employees to ask guests immediately after regarding the overall experience and how a good rating given to upper management will really help them. I understand it didn't come from the shaman himself but more from training of management to make sure he provides the best service. I would suggest this question should come from someone from the spa, AFTER you've had a chance to freshen up AND paid. Not while you're sitting there, still sweaty and dirty. First, we got lost getting there - no signage (that we could find) and we stopped at the Nines (next door) and they gave us instructions. From the drive in, I wasn't expecting much - remember looks are deceiving...my amazing fiancé had surprised me with this destination and resort so I wasn't able to research the Viceroy. Imagine my surprise... -outstanding customer service and welcome. -upgraded to a room that made me cry - check the pictures. -after our introduction to our room, our concierge pulls out these two different blocks of handmade soaps, takes a knife and cuts off two bars for us!! -privacy fence with a heated pool and hammock. -cabanas that don't cost extra...try THAT in the states! -excellent fitness center - yes, we worked out every day before breakfast -killer drinks - margaritas every day and plenty of them -the BEST MANGOS ever - seriously. you know how wine / terroir is important? same with mangos. I am spoiled forever. -the BEST service by all the staff. There must have been six staff to every guest! -cute gift shop. I made the mistake of trying on a cute little bikini. BIG MISTAKE. I went back to drinking margaritas!! We never left Viceroy. Not once. Everything was outstanding. When we departed, they had the car running and two cold bottles of water in the car! If this property was $300/night, I'd be giving it 4 or 5 stars. At the current price point , it's not a good value. The drive into the property is like going through an alley, I actually thought we were entering through a service entrance. There is no signage, just an unbranded entrance that is very lackluster. The check-in process was also lackluster, there was no real introduction to the property, we felt some guidance for navigating the unmarked paths would've made sense. The rooms were good except that at this price point (~$800/night) they should have their own espresso machine. Taxi situation is a little annoying. They have taxis ready to go, which is nice, but you pay a premium fare when leaving the hotel, and it's cheaper when returning to the hotel. Overall, the staff was very nice and helpful. Again, if this hotel was $300/night, it would be more competitive to me and I'd be more satisfied. I found an all-inclusive, 5-star, hotel for $350/night nearby as a reference vs ~$800/night at Viceroy. read more

This is THE BEST hotel in Mexico. I truly felt like a rockstar staying here. The staff is absolutely incredible and go above and beyond to make your stay extra special. The resort is beautiful and unlike anything I have ever seen in Mexico before. The rooms are one of a kind with each villa having its own pool! And the outdoor private shower really added a nice touch. The pool is amazing right on the beach and the cabanas on the beach are free of charge for all guests to use! We loved these and sat in them everyday. The staff brings around goodies like cold towels, popsicles, shot of the day etc while you are laying out and they even continually came by to clean my sunglasses! The spa is truly one of a kind- we got a couples massage and had time with the private hot tub and steam rooms before our treatment. Then were escorted into our private hut with a waterfall and massage tables. It was one of the best massages I have ever had!! The La Marea restaurant was our favorite part of the trip. We had the most delicious meals and it blew us away so much we ate here all 3 nights of our trip! The chef is truly incredible, I have never had better cooked steak and chicken. The waiters at the restaurant were also amazing, so helpful and attentive and a joy to speak to. The staff was so friendly and nice I never wanted to leave, they even gave us a going away dessert on our last day to wish us happy travels. Best hotel I've ever stayed in. And that's over four seasons (both in Hawaii and Costa Rica) and some other high end resorts. What sets the Viceroy apart is the service and the people. Their staff, and that's everyone from the housekeepers to the waiters to the beach bar staff, go above and beyond to make your experience wonderful. You are taken care of and pampered, and it was everything that I look for on a vacation. It's a small resort which is nice, with about 50-70 villas in total. Each villa is huge and absolutely beautiful. The villas are in the jungle surrounded by lush trees yet just steps from the gorgeous beach and crystal clear water. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a resort experience with excellent service. read more

This place was really nice and secluded, kind of! The pros are the villa. We got a villa in tucked in the jungle and it was neat. The cool thing is hanging out and having your own pool and back patio. Also the monkeys were a plus. Our bed unfortunately was not comfortable at all. The resort is private and quaint. They bolster a "no kids" policy, which is nice. But the problem with that is their so called private beach. Less than 50 yards to the south is a Mega Resort all inclusive with every f*cking kid you can imagine yelling and playing at the beach. While on that tangent, the mega resort is like having loud college kid neighbors that don't stop partying!!! Meaning this! The small beach front restaurant at nite is great, HOWEVER, the neighboring resort is blaring crappy music non stop with a yelling MC!!! So you don't get the quiet private feel at all! Also, you can hear Sandols MC and music blaring as well. The drive after you turn in from the highway is sketchy! This place is nice and the staff does a great job and the food is great! read more

We have been fortunate to visit some very amazing resorts and vacation spots around the world and the Viceroy Riviera Maya ranks among, if not, the best! While the resort itself is not particularly fancy, it is very well thought out and exceptionally comfortable. We opted for the signature villas near the spa because they were the most private indulging a private plunge pool, outdoor shower, great dining area outside and a large bedroom and bathrooms. The location of this resort is very convenient to many great attractions. The staff is excellent and always ready to please. Having the direct beach access and a restaurant serving fresh food throughout the day is a great convenience. This is well worth it and we will likely be back! read more

My husband and I love the Viceroy and have been coming there annually for the last 4 years. For us it is the perfect romantic get away. The accommodations and the service are exemplary and we have grown to feel very at home, the staff making a special effort to cater to our every need. From housekeeping to the beach boys, the service is beyond equal. The beach is one of the best anywhere and we enjoy our daily stroll and ocean swim. The Viceroy is very low key so if you are looking for a loud and raucous vacation, you should look elsewhere. The one negative is that we increasingly feel that the food and wine prices and value are not commensurate with the quality of the accommodations and service. We continue to hold this resort in our highest regard but we hope that the management will pay more attention to the food and wine quality and pricing. read more

Viceroy sells a serene experience and this is absolutely the opposite, I know I'm not the only guest furious to be paying obscene prices for this nonsense. 20th Anniversary trip, and we researched every and all properties in the area. We are so happy we chose the Viceroy Riviera Maya, and had a romantic, peaceful, secluded, enjoyable trip..for the most part. The check in process was seamless, informative, and the mayan blessing started off the stay with a cultural and spiritual feeling. The villa (#36 luxury villa) was perfect. Well taken care of, nice furnishings, plush towels, linens, and robes. A wonderful, jungle covered patio with running springs we could hear directly behind our fence, lovely plunge pool that can double as a hot tub if you ask the staff to up the temp, an outdoor shower area that is well maintained, great water pressure, and beautifully landscaped. I cant imagine any reason you wouldn't be completely satisfied with these accommodations...seriously outstanding! (Very minimal bugs/mosquitos) (The scent from the ozone type machine in the room is excellent and leaves a lovely, light aroma throughout the villa)...i forgot to ask what the scent is but i must know :) ***Service! Service! Service! We are well traveled, but have never experienced such genuine, warm, welcoming service at a resort in Mexico. The resort staff is so well trained and so comfortable providing above and beyond service you will truly be astonished. Not one time were my wife or I walking through the jungle path that when passing a staff member did they not stop, move to the side of the path, smile and greet us as we passed...every single time, at least 30 times during our stay. Consistent and authentic service all the time...every time! The individuals responsible for training at this resort are truly the difference makers. ***Food and beverage is top notch! We were here for 5 nights, did all inclusive for the first 3 then planned on exploring options in Playa. The F&B is extremely expensive...but worth it! If you are going to have 2-3 meals a day and at least 3 rounds of cocktails a day, the all inclusive is a definite must. (Don't think twice about this, just do it) We were not let down by a meal or appetizer or cocktail or individual beers iced down in its own individual bucket one time. The food is excellently prepared, fresh, always hot or cold if its supposed to be, and served in a passionate, welcoming manner always!! Marcos and Pepe's beach and poolside service is something we will remember, cherish, and appreciate at any other resort we may ever stay in the future. William at La Marea made our anniversary celebration memorable and delectable. His attention to detail, holding our favorite table each night, and knowledge of the menu and wine list were quite impressive. The hostess at La Marea (sorry forgot name), and the 2 Victors were also outstanding. ***Spa is a cultural and relaxing experience. The spa facilities are gorgeous and so different. We had a couples massage in the outdoor room with the jungle and waterfalls just beyond our reach. Magnificent! *Weekdays are very quiet, relaxing, and peaceful.....Weekends involve weddings at both Viceroy and at Azul Fives next door and the music can be quite loud. Also the Viceroy may alter some of the facilities during weddings such as closing the pool, moving the bar/restaurant, and really did not communicate this to us prior to the event. I think the level of annoyance in these situations depends on the location of your villa (we highly recommend the villas in the back of the property closest to the lobby area, we heard faint music during the week from Azul Fives, not very noticeable at all, but the weddings at both Viceroy and Azul Fives were definitely unavoidable regardless of your location on the weekends) and your tolerance level :). Don't let the noise deter you from staying here...seriously. If the hotel would communicate better in regards to their events, you can just head to Playa for a nice dinner and come back once the noise is gone....highly recommend Harry's Steakhouse in Playa....thats where we went to wait out the mild disturbance..haah! ***Bottomline: 5 stars all the way, very romantic, no kids, excellent food and drink, phenomenal service, beautiful jungle grounds, great beach and pool, unforgettable spa, lovely people that "genuinely and authentically" care about your stay. Over the top service. Incredible. Some of the best food I've ever eaten at a resort/hotel. Menu changes daily to keep you on your toes. It's not cheap, but you certainly get what you pay for and more. read more

We stayed here and it could not have been any better. The ride from the airport wasn't bad at all (straight shoot on the major highway). It's away from all the large resorts that feel like shopping malls. The staff could not have been any more accommodating and friendly: that was really one of the biggest takeaways from this trip. The place is gorgeous, it's quiet and the rooms/huts are so well laid out. Loved using the outdoor shower. It felt very private too. Pepe who works at the restaurant made our trip extremely memorable. We opted to get the massages at the end of the pier at sunset and before we even said anything he was walking down with drinks in hand: made us so happy. Incredible person to have there. If you plan on doing activities around the area (we did snorkeling and jet skiing) the staff is amazing with making it as easy as possible. The ruins at Tulum were really cool too (about 45 minute drive). Loved this resort and everything about this trip! read more

Our stay was in February 2017. I left this exact review on the hotel's survey in March, but have not heard back from the hotel or the General Mgr Mr Pedro Lara. Again, not the best way to handle the situation. I say this with a heavy heart, but we had a problem with our stay at The Viceroy that was not properly addressed, and I am not satisfied with the outcome. Our Presidential Suite had a MOLD issue in the aircon unit that rendered the bottom floor unusable, as I had a severe allergic reaction to the mold spores (difficulty breathing). This was brought to the attention of the hotel immediately, and quick fixes were implement, all to no avail (lemon oil diffusers, as well as workmen in our room everyday). We were told the hotel was full, but finally offered another room late in the evening of our third night, which we did take and which was much better and my breathing problems began to ease. We were also offered a complimentary wine dinner, which we accepted, and it was lovely. The evening before checkout I asked the front desk for a copy of the bill, and was told that the room charges, because of our difficulties, were still being evaluated, but the bill would be hand delivered to our room when all adjustments were finalized. The finalized bill was delivered as promised, and I was delighted to see that one of the nights at the Presidential Suite was removed, which adjusted our bill for the unclean and frankly dangerous conditions of our room. I was satisfied, and had no desire to be unreasonable, though our room at The Viceroy was hugely disappointing in its cleanliness. Upon checkout the FULL CHARGES had been returned to the bill! I brought this to the attention of the staff, who had 'no comment'. I am heartbroken that our unfortunate situation at an otherwise beautiful hotel was made worse by full charges for a room that was unusable and made me sick because of its unclean conditions. I fully expected the nights in the Presidential Suite to be complimentary. After several amicable and straightforward discussions with Mr Pedro Lara at the time, I am sadly disappointed in how the situation was ultimately handled; a lack of caring and compassion for a patron's health and enjoyment at the hotel is reflected by our lack of final adjustments to the bill. Our waiters on the beach, specifically Marcos, were excellent, both in service and friendliness As I mentioned earlier, I am heartbroken that our stay was less than ideal. I can imagine that The Viceroy can far exceed ideal and venture into greatness when all things are optimal - the setting is gorgeous and the staff is well trained and gracious. The true measure of greatness, however, is how one deals with a problem. In our situation we had a serious issue that very negatively affected our stay, and unfortunately it was ultimately not handled in a way that eased our burden, but rather increased our burden. Beautiful boutique property. Wanted to avoid the mega resorts, but still have some infrastructure, restaurants and options. Our villa was exquisite, with a private and functional patio, outdoor shower, private plunge pool, nice interior design and build, local art. The property is relatively lush since it was built about 13 years ago, and the villas are tucked into a winding path from the spa-like entrance down to the pool, beach and restaurant area. There are several types of villas, with privacy, size and price varying - probably worth your call to confirm what you have booked. The primary restaurant/grill has an excellent kitchen and is well staffed with servers. The menu was diverse enough for a 4-day stay. The 2nd restaurant, La Marea, has a beautiful treetop setting, our one meal there did not quite measure up to expectations, though service was good. Management and front desk staff - especially Natalia - were great, checking in periodically but not intrusive. The beach is obviously smaller than other large properties, but there is privacy and quiet, the sand is pristine and there is a nice pier to walk on. Chairs and daybeds are great. Service attentive. Drinks are OK and costly. The spa has a nice earthy, organic design to it. The Viceroy's location is good, not too far from the airport as well as near lots of sites/activities if you want to take a day or half-day trip. Main roads are easy to drive and navigate. read more

My experience with this resort is with the management, not the resort itself. We never made it to the resort due to the death of my father and we were burying him on the day we were supposed to arrive at the property. I contacted the resort by phone a week before our arrival and spoke to a front desk person who transferred me to an answering machine (because it was the weekend, the office was closed?). I phoned again 2 days later because I didn't hear from anyone and was given an email address and asked to provide documentation of my situation. I submitted a death certificate and a copy of the obituary (which contained my name and the date of the burial) and asked for a refund of the 50% deposit that they had retained. I was advised of their refusal to refund the entire amount and they retained $800 as a penalty. Considering the documentation provided, I am SHOCKED that they would not refund my money. My advise is DO NOT book at this resort unless you can be certain that no unforeseen circumstance will occur. They have NO HEART or sympathy at all. read more
