My family and I spent some time shopping around Puerto Maya's shops. Overpriced to the max! The duty free though was worth shopping in, but the other stores, gift shops and especially jewelry stores I would avoid. The jewelry stores also had some incredibly pushy sales people. There are plenty of places to snap some photos. I certainly did.

Puerta Maya (Cozumel), is a popular stop for many cruise ships. After walking through the duty free shop at the end of the pier you will notice that the area is a bit, well, touristy. There are lots of jewelry shops, and clothing stores, and bars, and restaurants. Fat Tuesdays, is a good choice, so is Three Amigos. If you didn't book a excursion through the cruise line, you will have plenty of opportunities to purchase one at the port. You will also be offered multiple taxi tours, which is identical to Nassau. Bahamas port. I opted for a ATV/beach excursion. In my opinion, its best to venture outside the port area to experience the real Cozumel. Enjoy!

DUFRY: tax & duty free

Mischita H. pretty much hit the nail right on the head. I was actually here in Cozumel only a few days after she was, and I arrived on the Caribbean Princess, not the Carnival Ecstasy. Nevertheless, what she says is accurate for the most part and there are just a few things I would like to add on to it. When you arrive at the island and disembark your cruise ship, you'll first have to head through this glorified gate that's basically a tax & duty free shop called DUFRY. Cozumel is so hot that you'll probably want to linger in DUFRY for a while because you'll miss the air conditioning the moment you set foot outside again. There is a circle of tourist shops afterward, and they basically just sell a bunch of souvenirs. There's nothing you really need from them, so it's probably best to look through them after exploring the island so that you're not short on time and don't have to carry your stuff around with you wherever you go. Instead of renting a taxi or your own vehicle, I would recommend going on one of their tours where they'll actually drive you around the island and make periodic stops at some of the more interesting sights. That's really the only way you'll be able to make the most out of your short stay unless you've already been here before. Go with them to Mr. Sancho's, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, El Mirador, the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, and definitely be sure to visit downtown San Miguel where most of the island's life is. The way back from San Miguel to Puerta Maya is just a short taxi ride away. Enjoy the island.

We visited September 25th, 2019. We rented a scooter for $40/daily. During our trip around island my boyfriend tried to turn around to check out a cool look out point. Well the scooter and me both fell into some soft brush on side of road. Thankfully I was fine and not hurt and I broke the scooters fall so it was fine too lol. We got a little lost on way back(the map the scooter company gave us was not good at all) asked for directions and figured we were going in wrong direction. Finally we made it back and as soon as we got off they said "oh you had an accident?" My boyfriend being an honest person. Said yes in some bushes but it was soft landing nothing major. They start inspecting the scooter over and over. Now mind that this scooter was a bucket of junk from beginning. There was a portion of seat missing, several previous scratches, and major wear and tear. We should of took pictures previously to renting it but we never thought something like this would happen. Well they kept my boyfriends cruise card as "insurance". They told us that we caused 3 scratches around bottom and the cost would be $110 to fix it!!!!!!! And they refused to give back or know where his cruise card was until we paid them. I have never in my life felt so scammed or taken advantage of. The scooter itself didn't even look worth $110 to me. After 20 mins of back and forth and feeling extremely uncomfortable they took $50 and finally gave us his card back. My whole impression of Cozumel was tarnished after this encounter and I will continue to warn people who may be naive like I was. How bad the SCAMMERS are in COZUMEL!!! So please if traveling here do not rent a scooter/car/buggy from anyone and especially not the company Rentadora Sian Ka'an.

The port is nice very nice, very clean, non threatening environment with lots of selections to spend your money on. Now if you aren't with a cruise ship you can't get into the duty free shopping area. I bought a grapefruit flavored soda, A CAN at that, set me back $2 BUT IT WAS THE BEST SODA I EVER DRANK IN MY LIFE!! very refreshing. They had a deal going 2/$4.00 but I was bewildered how that was deal when one was $2 smh lol whatever Man, I don't argue with the locals. There are locals in costume that are happy to take pictures with you for a gladly welcomed tip. If you are a booze hound there a plethora of places for you to get effed up, not drunk... BUT EFFED UP!! Lol once you make it out of the duty free shopping area it becomes a plaza of shops from Nick nacks to high end Jewelry. There is a ALAMO car rental spot just beyond the fat tuesdays. All the restaurants are expensive, like beyond expensive! Like expensive to the point you would just walk your ass back to the boat and eat for free. Smh we did eat at 3 amigos which was like senor frogs; uninspired, over priced, touristy, almost bland, and price point not meeting food quantity. My guy had REAL AUTHENTIC QUESADILLAS on the beach, being I wasn't in a gambling mood with my stomach being so far away from a comfortable toilet, I didn't order any but just sampled his. His were delicious! Mine not so much. Lol great place to visit, if you have time try the oxygen bar and have some drinks underwater!!

Click the link and you will see that they are no longer in business…read more I have used Tours Plaza multiple times over the years and always requested Gerry as my driver. Last November our stop in Cozumel was canceled due to the ship needing to avoid a storm. I contacted Tours Plaza and requested a refund as their policy stated "Full refunds will be given in the event that your cruise ship does not make port." They replied the following day, November 7, 0224 "Hola Margaret. We're sorry your cruise changed the itinerary, we'll issue the refund, you must receive it in the next 7 days. See you the next time! Kind regards". That was 5 months ago. I have never received my $233.20 refund despite repeated promises by Eduardo that the refund was being processed. On January 31, 2025 "Our clients are very important to us, I'll issue a refund right away, you should receive it in the next few days. I'll write to you in a few days in order to confirm this went through." Never happened. On 2/07/25 " Hola Margaret. The refund usually takes 7 day... We just checked the status and it's processing, you should see it at your account shortly. In any case we are monitoring the situation because our clients are very important to us! And your refund is absolutely correct. We'll write to you on Monday again, in order to check you received your refund correctly. Kind regards". Never received. He then pretty much stopped responding to my emails. I never received the refund. Today I receive an email from Tours Plaza regarding yet another reservation (upcoming) telling me that I will need to try and get my deposit back from my credit card company "Dear M, bad news, our site was been hacked and several reservations were deleted and money was stolen from us and while we investigate, and try to get back the stolen money from us, Tours Plaza is no longer online, please ask for your deposit refund at your bank or Visa Card. Best Regards Eduardo" I strongly advise against using this company. They can no longer be trusted. And that's a shame because they were my go-to tour guides for many years.

We met our driver KELLY at the assigned location and he was extremely courteous and knowledgeable. We knew ahead of time that we wanted between 3-5 hours of tour and had a couple of places in mind, the Chocolate factory & Tequila factory (both were very fun and educational), then over to the beach to just enjoy the coast. Kelly picked several stops along the way and made it real easy to just relax and have a great time. We were ready to go back to our ship after about 4 hours and had the BEST DAY POSSIBLE. Thank you Kelly for a pleasant, comfortable, and informative day. You made our visit truly memorable.

No phone are allowed during this portion, but there are lockers available to store your things. Our 2nd stop was at the Coba ruins, where we saw the Mayan temples in the town of Coba. It was a long walk to the main temple, but it was a cool experience and beautiful architecture to see. The whole trip was an all day adventure, but well worth it! **INITIAL REVIEW**…read more Given the fact the Mayan Cacao Company (which I will shorthand to Mayan Cacao for the remainder of this review), as a locale has been designed for tourism, I will review the business on the fact most tourists' experience here will be "one and done." With that in mind, is Mayan Cacao worth it for a "one and done" locale for tourists? The answer is "YES!" Mayan Cacao is engaging enough with its tour and show that makes it interesting and memorable. And it should also be noted it is usually a stop on an excursion, ergo if people are concerned this is the only place they'll go to, take note it won't take your entire day. Though an address is provided, Mayan Cacao is located about 30 minutes southwest of San Miguel de Cozumel, the port city in which cruiseships come into the island. Mayan Cacao has thoroughly embraced not just its importance in making the unique brand of cacao that is popular around the world, but being a tourist attraction. For starters, when you enter, you can technically go straight to the store where Mayan cacao candy bars, coffee, and other cacao-based foods are sold (which I must stress is a-okay to take with you as long as they stay in their original packaging), but souvenirs of a distict artistry to Mayan culture. However, most tourists, especially those on excursions, will go through the tour. The beginning of the tour will provide you an opportunity to use the restrooms and take a picture with a female worker dressed as a traditional Mayan locale right next to the Mayan Cacao Company sign or mural. The tour consists of your tour guide giving details of Mayan culture including their numerology and calender, as well as a short movie showcasing how cacao is turned into chocolate. However, the highlight of the tour is the live demonstration of how Mayans made cacao back in their time, using the same ingredients they used then, and also demonstrating the tools they used at the time. Not only that, you get to sample the chocolate once it is done... which I have to say, DELICIOUS! The final leg of the tour brings you to a hut that sells alcoholic cocktails with cacao and the souvenir shop. Overall, the tour was about 20 to 30 minutes long. Ultimately, I am going to give Mayan Cacao a five-out-of-five star rating with this review. Just because they are five-out-of-five, does that make them perfect? No, of course not. Perfection has no rating because it goes beyond it. However, what they provide in both as a tourist stop and prominent chocolatier of Mayan cacao, it is definitely an unparalleled service and presentation that has sharpened like steel over its many years in service.

On Thursday, my husband and I rented a jeep and drove to the fishing pier at Laguna Ciega. Note: You will need a jeep to get to Laguna Ciega. I would not recommend walking. Once you leave downtown and start driving for a while, you will end up in front of a dirt road, where the road becomes bumpy and requires off-road driving. A regular car will not be able to handle the dips, which are pretty major. Depending on the weather there could also be muddy water. The dirt road is wide enough for one car, so be mindful of cars that could come from the opposite direction. Despite the off-road driving, we still arrived within 30 minutes. Cozumel is not a large island. We parked our rental car and got on a boat with a local who offered to take us across to la Isla de Pasion for 100 pesos per person each way. We agreed that we would pay him half of total when he gets us to la Isla de Pasion, and then the other half when he takes us back to Laguna Ciega. The boat ride was quick and took about 5-10 minutes. Isla de Pasion was incredible. The water was clear and the waves were super gentle. There is a beach club on site; however, my husband and I settled down in our own little section of the beach. We stayed for about 3 hours, swimming, and having a picnic with food and beers that we brought. As we were leaving around 1:30pm, we noticed there were a lot more people on Isla de Pasion. The good: Eduardo y Eduardo were our captains on the boat and it was an amazing time. Aida was our go to person on the island and she was very kind and accommodating. The island is GORGEOUS- clear water, surprisingly no fish, white sand, nice chairs, hammocks, and swings at the cash bar. The drinks from the cash bar were fabulous- I had fresh coconut water and a delicious mojito. The not-so-good: the food was just plain bad and there was very little selection. The included drinks were either a rum punch, tequila punch, or beer. The punches were heavy on sugar but had very little alcohol. The inflatable was in need of much repair. Snorkeling is listed in the description but when we asked we were told there are no reefs on the island and they don't have snorkeling. The worst part for me was the timing- we knew we were only scheduled to be there until 1:30 but we were only at the island from about 9:30-11:45 before we were corralled back to the boats. I'd do it again- but would have liked to know these details going in.
