This is literally some of the tastiest food I've had in Memphis, and the ambiance is amazing! I got the Chicken Shawarma with hummus. I didn't want to eat the pita slices because I'm trying to lower my carb intake and they were kind enough to bring me cucumber slices. The vegetables were extremely fresh. The meal was absolutely divine! The layout and interior design make you feel like you've been transported all the way to Morocco. I love restaurants that make you feel like you're on vacation. They also have an incredible deck that has ample seating. Our meal was about $15 per person. The only challenge can be parking. I suggest you park on Madison Avenue. This was my first time at this restaurant after hearing good reviews. I normally go to another Greek restaurant in town, but it was closed so decided to try this. I ordered a Greek salad and added beef & lamb. Who can mess up a Greek salad right? Apparently they can. The salad was disgusting; I could barely swallow the first bite. It's like they just threw everything together with no thought. They added a ton of dressing in the salad (I'm not sure what type of dressing it was but it wasn't the typical vinaigrette) but then also gave you additional dressing on the side. A very mushy experience. The added meat didn't help the salad either; it just made it taste worse. This salad cost $16, which is very expensive for the poor quality I received. The hummus, the baba ghanoush, the falafel, grape leaves, pita, all were SO GOOD!! Every single thing I got was amazing! I got the Sultan Mezza Combo and its soooo much food and amazing, I also got a Turkish coffee and it was sooo good the best coffee I've ever had in Memphis. I had a very pleasant dinner here last evening. We sampled two advertisers: the "Kibbeh" and "Simple Favorite". The former was quite tasty, however given you only receive 3 for $7 (at time of writing) I can't say it was a high value pursuit. The latter on the other hand was fantastic, as they provided some very tasty pita bread as well as a masterfully flavorful spicy feta dip. Well worth trying out this one. I had eyed the "Shawarma Platter" ever since first looking the place up, so I already knew I was going to get this. Thankfully, it ended up being a great decision. The quality of the beef and lamb on my plate was astounding, and whatever marinade they had used to enrich the taste of the dish was truly what made it pop. The rice itself was good, as were the vegetables, though I did have a bit of a complaint that neither weren't very warm. Fortunately, the meat was, so I didn't bother sending it back. All things considered, it ended up being a very filling and enjoyable meal, which is particularly nice given it was one of the lower priced items on the list of entrees. I should also take the time to mention their hot tea, which is something they advertise as the "Best in Memphis". They may very well be correct. It is an unbelievably flavorful concoction rich in ginger, sage, and honey. I would be surprised if I hadn't drank a full pot of it by the end of dinner. Even if you're one who might prefer an iced tea (trust me, I understand that) you wont find yourself disappointed giving their hot brew a try. The service was quite great, I would say, though there weren't very many people there to begin with. The decor and atmosphere is pleasant, quite themed to the Middle East. Many ethnic establishments tend to go for more of a sterile decor, but I'm glad that wasn't the case here. There was also plenty use of candles, which further helped improve the very "warm" lighting utilized by the restaurant. If you're in the market for a comfortable Mediterranean dining experience, it is well worth your time and money to give this place a shot. Stumbled upon this little gem one night while in Midtown. The restaurant looks like a cozy house with a large porch that wraps around one side. The staff were warm and welcoming ad soon as we entered. The ambiance was cozy and quiet. We chose to sit outside as the weather was absolutely perfect. We ordered the Falafel and hummus, chips with house sauce, and the chicken shawarma. The food was brought out almost immediately which was a pleasant surprise. Every single item was truly delicious. The falafel, dipped in the smooth hummus was my favorite part of the meal. The house chips were the perfect consistency (crunchy with just a slight but of softness) and paired with their house sauce....wow! They also brought out extra sauces in the event it needed to be sweeter or spicier. This was my first time having chicken shawarma and I was not let down. I literally lived within walking distance of this place for years before I ever tried it out. Wow, I was really missing out. This is a good place to go if you like Mediterranean food, or if you are vegan or vegetarian. Although, I do eat meat, they have ample options for those who do not. One of my favorite dishes is the Falafel Big Mac, which is just Falafels and veggies served in a pita. These are the best Falafels I've ever had. It comes with a sauce served on the side...ask for extra if you order this to go. I've tried some of the meat dishes, but I pretty much go here for the falafels, and also the TEA. This is my favorite place for all seasons. I highly recommend the "Big Mac" which is a falafel sandwich. Use the sauce bottles generously. The yellow bottle is spicy, so be mindful of that one. Truly the better of the places you're gonna find in town for mediterranean fare. A bit pricy, and no alcohol served here - don't try to bring your own wine or anything like that but they do take out. Let the Memphis food adventures continue! Casablanca is a local favorite so my friends and I decided to come for a Friday night dinner. There were 5 of us and we arrived hungry so we immediately ordered the Sultan Mezza Combo. We thought it'd be a little sampler, but it was MASSIVE! Like full on medium size plates of delicious hummus, babaganoush, fattoush, grape leaves, and falafel on fried pita. Oh, and there was regular pita on the side too. Everything was tasty and just what we needed! But we were all kind of full before we even got to our entrees. I had ordered the Shawarma Salad with Beef and Lamb because I'd been deprived of unfried vegetables on my trip. Unfortunately, I wasn't expecting the mountains of creamy dressing all over the salad, and it wasn't my thing. Everything else in the salad was fine, but I couldn't really tell because of the dressing. I ended up eating more of the lighter fattoush salad that came with our appetizer. Let me start by saying, I love Casablanca's food. It is consistently wonderful. Every time I've ever been there over the years, the service is always a little slow but it is well worth a little wait for the unique, delicious offerings they serve. However, last night we came in at 7:20pm. We were immediately asked by the young woman at the counter how many were in our party (3) and we requested to sit on the patio. She told me they didn't have any tables outside unless we wanted to wait for her to clear a table. We were fine to wait. The manager or maybe owner was leaving as we were waiting and he checked to see if we were being helped. What a shame it was he left because that was the last time we were tended to. Shortly after, the waitress gestured at the cleaned table outside and we happily sat down. We waited for 20 minutes and I began to look around to try to figure out who our server was. Another 10 minutes pass, and 2 other tables on the patio had someone in their party walk in to get their checks. The young lady who seated us came with their checks but very obviously avoided making eye contact with any other tables. After over 30 minutes with no one talking to us, we got up and went to another restaurant. I guess the moral is, the restaurant should probably always have a manager on site because without oversight, the wait staff seemed not to care about patrons at all. First, I would like to say that I love Eastern/Mediterranean food. I have eaten at these type of restaurants all across the U.S., and even had good food while in Saudi Arabia. Let me say this to give insight on my perspective: I am a transient here in Memphis, having been here about three months. So, I don't know where to get authentic Asian, Indian, or Eastern cuisines. But, I was told that midtown was the place to go, so I decided to tickle my taste buds with Eastern/ Mediterranean (Casablanca). Without exaggeration, I have to say that the food is very average! It's for people that want a change of pace from eating at the same ole restaurants. The establishment is clean, the employees seem amicable enough, and the service is great! So, there is nothing really negative to say there.... But, I would like to give potential patrons a birds eye view of what to expect. Otherwise, you will be utterly disappointed with paying such hefty prices for mediocre/average food, monetarily and with your time. Really, It was a total let down for me. I expected something unforgettable based on their presentation, the friendliness of their staff, and their exorbitant menu prices. Go and try it for yourself, but don't say you were not given a heads up. With all the positive reviews, I imagine the people that left them have never eaten authentic Eastern/Mediterranean. I nearly chose a different restaurant for my birthday dinner after learning that Casablanca did not serve alcohol, but man I am glad I didn't! The food here is soooo tasty and unique. And they easily have the best tea in Memphis! We had an appetizer of the falafel hummus platter, which was the perfect start to our meal. The falafel is perfectly crisp and flavorful. They serve pita bread with the dish as well, to dip in the hummus. For dinner, I had the Shararma platter with lamb, which came with rice, roasted carrots, and roasted potatoes. The meat was very tender and flavorful. My boyfriend had mixed Kababs, and tried both the chicken and lamb. Both our meals were delicious, and we were given enough food for 4 meals easily. This new location is incredible! Beautiful authentic decor and of course delicious food. It's pretty impressive that a local business can maintain the same level of high quality food and great service at 3 locations! You can't go wrong with anything on this menu. The falafel hummus platter is great to share. The hummus is perfectly smooth and tangy and the falafels are tiny bites of fried goodness. I usually alternate between the chicken shawerma or beef kifta kabab sandwich. My husband sticks with his favorite dish here, the mixed shawerma platter which comes piled high with beef and lamb shawarma along with buttery rice with carrots and potatoes. Yum!!! Local friends took us here during a trip to Memphis; it is one of their favorite restaurants and I can see why. This was actually their first time to this location. We originally came Friday night and it seemed disorganized. Came back Saturday evening with reservations and it was empty. They do not serve alcohol as a FYI. I grew up around a large populations of Greeks so I am pretty familiar with homemade Mediterranean food. Ordered the spinakopota for sharing which was good. Had my first visit last night with my foodie partner in crime. It was awesome -- no wait (Tuesday around 6:30 pm) and plenty of seats but plenty of people there enjoying their food. The parking situation wasn't bad at all as I cut over from Union and could take a right onto the actual street. There are SO many things to choose from. My friend got the chicken couscous plate, I got the mix kebab (one chicken, one lamb) that was simply dressed and included onion, and grape leaves. I also got the hot tea, which is perfect and (I'm assuming -- I was only charged for the first order) free refills! The sauce they top the kebab with is also provided in a bottle, along with a sort of spicy tzatziki style cream sauce. I could probably drown myself in lamb kebab with the sauce and the grape leaves, and die a very very happy lady. One note on the grape leaves -- these are awesome, made fresh and served hot. They are not the super compact and cold little ones you'll get in a grocery store ready-made section or at the deli. If you're not acclimated to the texture, it may be a little iffy for you. Last but not least, the entire staff was awesome! We were waited on by two gentlemen, and they all seemed to be aware of each others' parties and made sure to refill tea, water, etc. very promptly. Gertrude and I ate at Casablanca this evening. We had lentil soup (thick, spicy, very nice) -- and -- cous-cous -- Flat-out, out-of-this-world -- awful. I lived in France for several years in the early 60s, Cous-cous entered French cuisine when French colonists (pieds-noirs) returned from newly independent Algeria while I was there -- the early '60s. Even in the small mining town where my Dad managed the tire factory, just about every restaurant had cous-cous at least once a week, if not every day. It was analogous to a nice Mexican dish here in America. My entire family loved cous-cous. I ate it probably 20-30 times over two years. My late Dad was a gourmet chef as a hobby and made cous-cous dozens of times more for Sunday lunch over the next 30-odd years. We ordered cous-cous tonight -- my idea, I confess. I expected a treat. Well, it contained a few bites of sweet potato, maybe a garbanzo bean or two, NO sauce whatever (green hot sauce and some kind of mayonnaise were placed on the table -- neither remotely appropriate) -- a bed of faw-faw (sp?) -- the grain base -- and -- chunks of gristle ("lamb") that I mostly wrapped in a paper napkin and took home to my dogs. Dry like cardboard. I kept waiting for some flavor, some hint of recognition, of "ah-ha!". But -- nada. As my son would say, "orc food". Just grain and gristle and no flavor to speak of. I know cous-cous VERY well, and this stuff was unrecognizable except for the faw-faw. The cous-cous dish they served us was grim stuff -- one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I don't write many Yelp reviews, but this cannot go unwritten or unsaid. It was astonishingly bad. This restaurant is owned and operated, apparently, by folks from North Africa -- Algeria/Morocco/thereabouts, so they HAVE to KNOW better. I can't believe they DON'T KNOW better. Additionally -- amusingly -- they have on the menu what they call "Poisson fish". OK, well, yes -- "poisson" IS French -- for -- yep -- "fish". So I suppose the dish is fish-fish. At least it isn't "poison-fish" or "plastic-fish". But I would have to taste it to tell you that with real confidence. Oh, and we waited -- and waited -- and waited -- for the check. It finally arrived when we got up to go to the cash register. And no, the place wasn't terribly busy, not for a Saturday evening. Your mileage may vary, but my mileage will NEVER include a return to Casablanca in Midtown Memphis on Madison. read more

First time at this restaurant, and only positive things to say about it! We had the holy land shish kebab (chicken), vegetarian couscous, and hummus appetizer. They were all exceptionally delicious! The chicken was juicy and tender - cooked to perfection. The hummus was the perfect taste and texture. The spicy sauce and thousand-island-like sauce that was brought out with the table was really good. Last but not least, the "Best Tea in Memphis" really was the best tea in Memphis - perhaps even the best tea I've had anywhere. The tea is bottomless. It's official, I like this place. I've been wanting to try the Poplar location since I moved here a few years ago but never made my way over to do so. Thank goodness the owner decided to open a midtown location. I've been twice this month- once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch, my friend and I both had the lamb & beef shawarma. He had hummus and lemonade, too. For dinner, I had the 5030 Poplar which is kifta over hummus with pita bread; this was served with 2 yummy sauces. And I had the lemonade this time, freshly squeezed with honey. I couldn't eat all my food so I have lunch for tomorrow and I couldn't leave without a chocolate mousse to go. I came here with some friends a month and a half ago for a special occasion. The service was exceptional, and even more so because of the friendliness and perfect hospitality of the owner, Amir. He visited every table and from what we overheard, made every single guest feel welcome. He visited our table multiple times, chatting warmly each time with all of us, and as a special gesture to my friend, who had just finished a major accomplishment in her career, he gave us several appetizers and dessert on the house. Let me tell you, between the six of us we tried several dishes, and every single one was delectable. Even without the hospitality and good service, the food would have earned this place a five star rating.
