This is where beautiful things happen with the help of the beautiful (and awesome) people. I never thought I would want to give a birth with the help of midwives before. I am from California and All of my female friends gave birth at hospitals. My sister gave birth to a boy here and has been going there for check ups now. EVERYONE working here has been helpful before the birth; answer all my and my sisters question about baby, labor, preparation to welcome baby, etc During the labor; we got there around midnight. We called them and they were there ready. Professional nurse? With a lot of experience watch and log everything during the labor and the other one helped my sister gave a birth more easily ( constantly rubbing .. Checking.. Encouraging my sister) and after the birth of my nephew( answer all stupid questions(^^) we asked and give personal attention to the mommy and the baby. Absolutely recommend this place and I will definitely give birth to my baby if I live in seattle.( or look for midwives in California if there is any) What I realized from the whole experience of coming here and watching my sister give birth is that I don't need to go to a hospital to give birth. Trying to get the baby out naturally and getting healed( my sister) naturally are totally Possible!! Jennifer and Amanda took such good care of me with my prenatal visits, when I was in labor and delivery as well. Felt very supported they were always available to ask questions. Them and all the office staff were kind and helpful with everything. My baby is happy and healthy one year old now. I knew that I wanted midwives as my providers and to have a natural birth as much as possible. I found Brianna and the Cascade Midwives & Birth Center about 34 weeks into my pregnancy and was very anxious. When I walked into the birth center it had an instant welcoming feeling, which is something I don't get at hospitals. I met with Brianna and she not only asked the regular medical history questions, she also made it personal and asked how I was doing, which is something I wasn't used to and don't expect. She laid out how the care was going to look like from here until after birth. She also made it a point to let me know that their main goal is for me to have the best experience as a first time mom and to feel empowered about the decisions I make. Brianna not only made my birthing experience the most positive one I could ever imagine, she also helped me find my amazing doula super last minute and helped me find resources for my little one and me postpartum. I didn't even think of lactation consultants, but she recommended two amazing local ladies that helped me with breastfeeding. All in all, I couldn't have ask for a better birth team and place to have my first baby. I felt heard and genuinely cared for with Cascade Midwives and Birth Center. read more

I waited until having my baby and 2 months longer before writing this review. I wanted to have the full experience and let it sink in before rating. This was my 4th pregnancy. The first two were highly medicalized and managed unnecessarily (I see that now, didn't then). I had my third child with a hospital midwife and that was a much better experience. For my 4th, I wanted something radically different. I met with Darlene mostly, but also a few other midwives who filled in for Darlene when she wasn't available. Darlene was extremely caring and considerate. Willing to spend a lot of time with you and answer all your questions. I didn't have many questions or concerns, but she always asked if I did. There was no rush to get in an out of the office. The staff was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I developed high blood pressure at 39 weeks. This happened my other births, so it was not a surprise. The blood pressure was not harming me or the baby (the only thing wrong with me was the blood pressure), but due to state regulations they could not keep me as a client if my blood pressure went over a certain level and I was right there. So we decided to induce labor with castor oil. Another unfortunate happening was that Darlene was out of town when this all happened. Her staff was in contact with her frequently, and her fill in, Melissa Denmark (a homebirth midwife from Snohomish), was excellent. I think it speaks well for a practice when their fill in is as good as their regular person! My induction went very smoothly and I delivered my little boy early in the morning after a short labor. It was so relaxed and calm. Cascade Midwives surprised me but also was exactly what I'd imagined midwifery care to be. I liked the mix of both natural and modern care. I felt totally comfortable that my baby and I were getting the best care possible. After all, births in a center or at home have been proven to be safer than those in a hospital. With the care of the staff at Cascade Midwives, my 4th pregnancy and birth was a wonderful experience with no regrets. read more

I cannot recommend Cascade Midwives and Birth Center enough. Darlene and her staff are like having a family you never want to loose touch of. I had my first baby at the birth center, and my second at home and both experiences were two of the best of my life. I've also been at two other births with Darlene and seen her decide to transfer one mother very early in the labor, which ended up being the best decision. If you are a first time mother contemplating a birth with a midwife, see if Cascade is the place for you. Just go talk to them. You'll immediately fall in love with this amazing place!!! read more

I came to learn of this birthing center when my sister decided to give birth here. My ideas on birth previously came from the birth video I'd seen of my mom giving birth to my brother, random t.v. reality shows, the latest trend of celebrities scheduling their c-section, and from my sister-in-law, who gave birth all drugged up, in the hospital. When I arrived at the birthing center when my sister was in labor I thought "What a beautiful place to have a baby!". The ceilings are vaulted with pine walls. Theres a large birthing tub in the corner of the room. All the furniture is.. well, actual furniture. Nothing medicaly or hospitaly at all! It's sooo comforting. There's a nice big comfy queen size bed, a couch and nice hutches. The waiting room is more like a living room. In the birthing room they turn the lights down low and you get to bring in your own cd's or mp3 player and play music of your choice while laboring! Also, they have a fridge for you to bring your own food and drinks to munch on (if you feel so inclined). No having just ice chips here! Now that I feel a little more educated about birthing options I think it's sad how many woman opt to just give birth in a hospital all drugged up. I am 5 months pregnant now and have been seeing Darlene Curtis at the Cascade birthing center every month. My boyfriend and I are really comfortable with her and we really enjoy her a lot! I know it's going to be scary to give birth naturally but, I am so excited to do it here in my own way instead of laying down in a hospital bed with a gown. After having my son in the hospital, and not being satisfied with the care I received there or from my OB, I decided to look into midwives when I became pregnant the second time. The first time I came to the birth center for a meet and greet type of appointment when searching for a midwife was like a breath of fresh air! All the staff were extremely nice, caring and helpful. The birth center is beautiful, and I was amazed with Darlene and Molly. They actually looked me in the eye when I talked (unlike my former OB that just stared at my chart)! They were extremely knowledgable and caring. I never feel rushed, and always feel like my care is a priority to them. My birth was an incredible experience and I went on to have another baby there in the same room two years later with Darlene and Bri. I loved the family environment and the ladies at the front desk are a hoot! read more

After a single appointment at Providence after I got pregnant, I decided a cold hospital birth was not what I wanted for myself. We met with Darlene for a tour and interview, and I knew right away this was the place I wanted to have my baby! I can't tell you how much I love everyone at Cascade Birth Center. I spent a lot of time here, not only for our appointments, but for our birth classes with Kayla. Unfortunately in my 8th month I developed gestational diabetes and had to be transferred to a high risk OB, but everyone worked so hard to help manage my blood sugars to avoid that as long as possible. Although I had to give birth under the care of an OB, she was a wonderful OB whom came highly recommended by the midwives and was very supportive of the natural/pain free birth I had planned for all those long months. The midwives also took over my postpartum care, so I was still able to share my birth experience and the first few weeks of my son's life with them. These women really care about your health and the health of your baby. You are not just another number to them, or another birth to rush through so they can get on with their busy lives. They are there for you 100% and I would highly recommend to anyone interested in a natural birth to meet with them. You'll be so happy you did. read more

My wife and I have delivered two children with Darlene at Cascade Birth Center; our eldest and our youngest. The birth of our first was wonderful; however, our last could not have been further from it. While I feel that Darlene is an exceptional midwife, the office is staffed by her daughters, who run it very poorly. We had two major hiccups through our last experience at the Birth Center, and both were handled extremely unprofessionally. For years after the birth of our first child my wife and I raved about Darlene, and recommended her services to all of our friends. However, because of this last experience I can no longer give that recommendation. read more

Sent us to the wrong ultrasound place, had to rush to get to where we really needed to be, then I contacted the midwife during my miscarriage to let them know, even gave 1st and last name. Then 4 days later they call to cancel my appointment? I had to remind them i contacted them because I had a miscarriage. I would have thought this serious a thing (having a baby) would have sharp people paying attention to detail. Imagine my surprise at how this went, then to get $250 bill? I hope im lucky enough to have a baby, but it won't be here... too many missed details. read more

Very upset to have found out from my new provider that Bri lied, multiple times about my a1c and blood glucose levels. She repeatedly told me that my a1c was a 10 and on other telephone conversations stated it was above 400 (which, if you do not know, an a1c doesn't go that high...you would be dead...so she clearly MEANT my glucose levels). In conversation with my new provider, they explained to me that my a1c was, in fact, 6.1. I'm extremely upset that not only was I treated poorly, but on top of it lied to about a fact about my health and potentially the health of my baby. I will always recommend this place to any mother. Darlene and Kyla were amazing during appointments and Kyla was like a super hero when it was time to meet my little girl! The birth assistants were just as amazing. They were constantly encouraging me that I was doing great. I can be very vocal and have quite the sailor mouth while birthing and it didn't even bother them, they kept doing an outstanding job. I have been meaning to write a review since I had my first baby with them almost 4 years ago but after just having my 3rd I knew it was time! Bri has delivered all 3 of my babies and when the time comes that we decide that we are done it will be so bittersweet knowing I won't be returning to my beloved midwife! I couldn't imagine a better birthing experiences then what I have had, one at the center and two at home. My last birth was pretty quick and after the midwives had left I asked my husband if it's weird that I was a little sad it went so fast, only because I didn't get to hang out with my midwives (Bri and Jen) for longer, I think he thought I was crazy. But honestly, I love them and the whole staff! My boys loved going in to my appointments with me and I loved that I could take them without getting the side eye like you do at some places. We feel so welcomed every time we walk in the door. I am forever grateful that I found them with my first and have got to experience 3 births with them. You won't be disappointed if you use them for your birth! read more

Such amazing midwives and nurses that I had to go back for seconds! ;-) seriously... When you call and the front desk person knows exactly who you are, you know you're in great hands. I would have a handful more babies just to have a handful more awesome births here. They allow water births, accept state insurance, will do home births (!), and their rooms feel like luxury hotel rooms. They're very cooperative with not so typical birth plans. The moment I walked in I knew for sure this was where I wanted to give birth... And not once did I regret that decision. Love all these ladies and you will too! read more

I gave birth to my third child at the birth Center. I worked mostly with Darlene. I had a wonderful experience. She is competent and experienced and I felt that she really cared what I wanted out of my birth. The birthing center itself is beautiful. Both rooms are decorated like a bed and breakfast would be. Very relaxing and inviting. She was also patient and understanding when I had to bring my other children to appointments. She answered all their questions, too, making them feel comfortable and excited about the birth of a sibling. She kept communication going with me throughout labor, asking me what I wanted and leaving me alone to labor unless I asked for her. She introduced me to the concept of warm cloths on the perenium while pushing--heavenly! The delivery went very well and I was so happy with the experience. I was also under Darlene's care when my fourth pregnacy ended in miscarriage at 13 weeks. She shared this experience with me in a caring and compassionate manner. We had a scheduled consult. I personally felt uncomfortable when I came in, the girls at the desk were not happy or friendly. Darlene met with us and we really liked her. She sent us home to think about it and told us to call the next day. We liked Darlene enough to overlook the front desk and we called the following day to set up out first appointment. My husband was told someone would call us back. No one ever did. So I waited out Friday and the weekend and called again at the beginning of the week, I got the answering machine. I left a detailed message and once again no one called back. Either they did not like us or their office girls ( which are Darlene's daughters) just don't want to do their job. I found this to be very unprofessional. I guess they just have so much business they don't need new clients. read more

Finally writing this... 8 years ago I had my first child here. The midwife who delivered my baby was Molly. Super kind, but young and inexperienced, had never had a baby. I was never in danger, but with someone who had an overly extreme case of back labor, she had no idea what to do with me and all her ideas of positions for me made everything worse. I've had two more children since, and I look back at that day as "too much". I almost chose no more children due to the high level of pain/stress of that day.... p.s. I delivered late August.... they have NO air conditioning, and no windows. yeah, that was horrible. Secondly, dealing with Darlene and her daughter. They took my daughters footprints on a cute paper, but said I couldn't take it home with me yet. It's my fist baby, I have no idea what's going on... I comply. I go in for a check-up visit and I request to take it home (it's now posted on the wall like a trophy, with all the others). They say no. I'm still a shy person at this time, and just say ok. Weeks later I make a special trip up to their place just to insist I wanted to take it home. Darlene's daughter became upset, angry, and accused me of wanting to ruin a "special plan" they have for mother's day... and pressured me hard that I'm being silly, and would be "missing out". My husband and I felt VERY bullied... and left the building.... Hind-sight, I should have taken it off the wall myself and left, because that was the LAST TIME I'D SEE IT. Days after I'd collected myself from the shock of the rudeness and audacity... I went back and told them that I WAS taking it home. Darlene's daughter pawed through a file and said it was "missing". Yes people. My first and only footprints of my daughter was suddenly "missing" after I challenged them on bringing it home. The best part, is she belittled me for being so silly to have not taken any myself. That it was really my fault. I have since discovered the BEST midwife in the snohomish county, I cannot post her name here or my review will be deleted. She is the most popular one here, and is based in her Arlington home. When I arrived at the Birthing center I was ecstatic! It was a clean family environment. I met Darlene and Jane and they seemed to be wonderful. I had a miscarriage with that pregnancy and then went back for my prenatal care of this pregnancy to be provided by them given my short but good previous experience. I then started having Braxton hicks early on like I did not with my first child and called the on call who happened to be Darlene. She reassured me it was normal and that sometimes they just are stronger than others. The next time I called her was to ask about an antibiotic I had been given and how it would or could affect my pregnancy, cause contractions or if there were any risks of preterm labor. (I just lost a baby a few months ago so maybe I am a little cautious) Darlene got very confrontational and rude and had me bawling my eyes out over the phone saying she did not want to treat me any longer. FOR A SIMPLE QUESTION REGUARDING THE WELL BEING OF MY BABY. My husband heard it, I heard it and we both heard her exact words of "I don't want to treat you any more I think you should start seeing an OBGYN." No explanation, no reason, just attitude and snappiness. I called and begged her to reconsider her words and to continue as my Midwife alongside Jane, I explained my reasons and they called me back. The front desk was rude and in the voicemail they said something rude such as "we hope you have regained your composure and we did not say what you said we said. What Darlene said to you was... "(Something completely different and making Darlene look and sound amazing)" I had received over half my prenatal care here at this point mostly dealing with Jane (who is amazing, kind, caring, sweet and all around just a wonderful midwife!) But at this point my husband and I figured it was odd that they were requesting full payment and claiming we had zero coverage from our insurance. We called insurance and as long as we were seeing Jane we had FULL coverage, of 100% benefits and homebirth was covered as well, which they claimed was not. So I called back and the front desk argued with me and snappishly told me my insurance company was wrong and I was wrong and everyone else was wrong but them. That they know better than I do and that they have contacts in my insurance company that I don't and Yada Yada. I then just said I am going elsewhere where my insurance covers just to avoid a fight. It was ridiculous! I have friends who have gone and had no issues or problems and loved and adored their entire experience... That is why I went but I am gathering that Darlene might not like to be bothered by questions she deems dumb and therefore don't feel comfortable saying that they gave any sort of warm fuzzy reassurance of any kind nor do they treat patients who have questions regarding the wellbeing of their baby or themselves with anything short of snappiness and frustration. I just lost a child people. I am going to want to be more careful and feel I should be able to call my midwife and ask a question! I would recommend cascade birthing center simply because Jane is there and is Amazing, kind and friendly, but don't expect to be treated like your worth much when you have questions regarding contractions, pain, or anything not happy by anyone else. ESPECIALLY INSURANCE related topics... as a matter of fact I would say only go if you are on state or something... its much cheaper than giving birth in a hospital and will only cost you around $1170 vs thousands with an OB but if you have insurance through BCBSIL Selections or any other insurance company you pay for that covers your prenatal care with a midwife, they will argue with you and belittle you in the kindest of tones. I was heartbroken but I have found another midwife who accepts my insurances 100% payment who my Primary referred me to. Ultimately, it could have been that I just so happened to catch these ladies on bad days and this is why I was treated with disrespect and belittled, I do have the FIRST bad experience I have heard of from them and the care they provide so it is up to you whether you want to see them. I will never go there again. But I know a ton of lovely ladies who would. So I guess Decide what is best for you and your baby! You just cant expect them to stand by you in crisis. they wont! read more

My husband and I are expecting our 2nd child together, and my 4th. With my first, I lived in another state and was only given the option of a midwife in hospital or an ob/gyn. I opted for the midwife and an all natural delivery and was very satisfied with the birth, with the exception of the hospital setting. When I moved here to Everett, I did a lot of exploring and came across this birth center as I wandered downtown. I instantly fell in love with the feel, the look, and the idea of having children in a home-like setting with all of the support you could ever need. I decided LONG before my second pregnancy that I would give birth at CMBC! Darlene has since delivered baby no. 2, and one of her associates, Molly delivered baby no. 3. I have had the most wonderful and peaceful experience with everyone at Cascade and couldn't dream of going anywhere else. The best part for me was being able to go home right away, TWO HOURS after giving birth!
